TR's World View in Bite Sized Portions
This collection is a sampler of several hundred Teddy Roosevelt quotations. It is a little book, the kind you are more likely to pick up and browse, than read through from beginning to end.

The editor has conveniently arranged TR's missives by topic. The reader will find our most energetic president holding forth on politics, foreign affairs, voting, citizenship, family, children, motherhood, Lincoln, virtue, boxing, war, and himself among the categories. In short, this sampling covers many of Roosevelt's incredibly varied interests.

Because the topics are so varied, this collection will serve to give those not well aquainted with TR a good taste for the man's energy, passions and world views. For those of us who are TRphiles, this book is a treasure trove, for it calls forth in many ways the truly unique aspects that serve to make Roosevelt perhaps the most "American" of Americans.

Also included are books by TR, quotes about him, his thoughts on the Rough Riders as well as his stirring and famous "...In the Arena" speech.

An inspiring little tome handsomely presented.

Gotta Have It!
This book is like a: "word for the day" calendar, or a "horoscope of the day" calendar. Since this book is 184 pages; read one quote per day, then start over. BULLY PULPIT is a glimpse of T.R.'S life. It's not as time-consuming as a biography would be...

Not since: MORNINGS ON HORSEBACK have I run across a book as interesting as this one.

ENJOY!

Great little TR book
This book of TR's maxims is a wonderful little reference to have. I keep it in the bathroom for quick reading, and I'm never disappointed!

Business Process Change: A Manager's Guide to Improving, Redesigning, and Automating Processes

Excellent Resource for Business-IT Integration
Businesses are changing shape faster today than ever before. Information technology (IT) is playing an increasingly significant part in this rapid evolution of businesses. That does not just mean the Internet, but a whole range of increasingly powerful influences from data warehousing to developments in Web services.
Unfortunately most books about business process change tend to assume that IT is merely a support player in relation to business. The continued economic downturn only serves to reinforce this mistake. At the same time most books about systems analysis and design, including those on the Unified Modeling Language (UML), are weak in their treatment of business processes. There is a widespread failure to appreciate the collaboration that must achieved between business and IT if business process change is to really work well in today's climate.

While this book will probably be of immediate interest to business managers, the refreshing thing about Paul Harmon's new book is that it speaks clearly to both IT and business camps in plain language. It reflects the need to integrate business and IT thinking. As such it is also a must read for both business facing IT people and for those key individuals who are breaking the conventional barriers between business and IT.

The book contains a wealth of timely advice. While it's range is wide and impressive, it is structured for ease of information access. This means that readers can quickly use the book for reference. Enjoy!

A Backward Glance
I spent last year creating a "Business Process Management" team for the CIO of HP. We spent much time and effort thinking clearly about how to approach business processes without the pitfalls of "Business Process Re-engineering," and worked to create both a holistic approach and an extremely simple, intuitive methodology. Through concentrated effort, without the luxury of time (in the midst of a complex, highly-visible merger), we arrived at a set of conventions for our work, policies on alignment to the office of the CIO, IT Architecture and Program teams, as well as different approaches we could supply to our business and IT internal clients. The value we've provided has been dramatic in the areas we've worked in, from Supply Chain Integration between pre-merger HP and pre-merger Compaq, to HP direct sales process design, to Global Content Management processes and re-engineering.

In hindsight, I wish I'd been able to read Paul Harmon's Business Process Change a year ago. Creating the team and its functions would have been much simpler, direct, and less time-consuming. Based on our experiences in a process architecture team in a $75B IT company, I see the book having major value to at least three audiences I deal with daily. First, the book is for managers considering major business change. It will provide a blueprint to why they might be changing (Part 1 - Process Management), specific ways they might change (Part IV - Patterns section), and if/when they use external consultants, a way to specify with formidable detail what they're expecting to receive (Part II - Modeling, and Part III - Managing).

Second, it is for IT people who are seeking to regain architectural and analytic skills, which ERP and packaged workflow may have supplanted. This book provides both modern idioms for approaching business with what might be termed 'object-oriented' analysis (Part II - Modeling), as well as a summary of the field of implementation techniques (Part V - Automation and Part VI - E-Business).

Third, for the consulting function to both IT and business, it provides a well-rounded blueprint for marketing (value propositions), tools, techniques, and implementation approaches. I cannot imagine a consultative team which doesn't have virtually all the elements of Paul's book as part of their basic operations. Certainly, no state-of-the-art team would want to be without them.

For the futurists (which I don't deal with daily), the book provides an implicit narrative of how the nature of business is changing (I myself feel we're on the edge of a dramatic change in business structure.) It begins with the disappearance of organizational models - which in the book are artifacts of a process model - and the focus on quantifiable outcomes for transactions (I'm thrown back to hierarchy-disrupting transactional analysis from the '70s). It continues by looking at virtual business structures - the 'extended supply chain' example which Paul walks through -- a linking together of transactions. And it ends by building IT - automation -- around process elements instead of traditional 'systems' architecture. Traditional labels, capsules, and hierarchies change and shift, and I see the book in a more 'future perfect' tense.

Business Process Change
Paul Harmon has provided a guide for a manager to improve and redesign processes. In the introduction, Paul overviews business process change and the manager's job. He gives a brief history of corporate business process change initiatives including organizations as systems, systems and value chains, process reengineering, the Rummler-Brace methodology and ISO 9000 and the six sigma methodology, Harmon discusses organizational goals and how they can be tied to competitive advantages. In Chapter three he introduces the process architecture. The book is full of process chart, examples and case studies. In addition, I found the Glossary to be most helpful. The book is a partial guide for the Performance Improvement professional. The concepts are presented straightforward and easy to follow. Paul provides a holistic state of the art approach we have been looking for.

"A Call To Pursue came into my life at the right time. Paul's journey teaches us to listen, have faith and go forth and do the work that God is calling you to do. Paul's story is remarkable. The book will inspire you to build a stronger relationship with God. I know that I have done this, since reading this book."

patients
Pauls book has taught me to be patient. In addition, it has taught me to wait upon God for his timing is the best - if only we can learn how to wait on him. Thanks to God, Paul has now reaped what he sowed.

I just couldn't put it down!!
I am not a big book reader by any means...as a matter of fact I don't think I have ever read a book front to back!! I was handed this book and was just wondering what it was about. The first chapter..then the next..then the next...well before I knew it I was done with the book..I couldn't put it down!! I found that there was so much that I could relate to in every day life and it just encouraged me to keep going.
A truly honest and personal book!

Fascinating study of the music, interpretation, imagination
I love this book.

As a study of the mind of a top-notch musician, the writer has done a superb job of capturing an intimate portrait of how Casals thought about music, and the production of musical performance. Through a series of well-organised chapters, the reader feels as if he/she is undergoing a masterclass with Casals: diminuendo, stress, meter, mythology, feeling . . . by revealing Casals as a philosopher of orchestration, this book shows the microscope of Casals mind when viewing a score. We benefit from his incomparable insights, spoken off like night-time chat, and we learn from his conductor's sensibilities, like we're sitting in the string section in front of him.

This book is invaluable to musicians--of an instrument--composers, conductors, and amateur enthusiasts such as myself who'd like to experience the workings of a keen sense and ear in a genius like Casals.

This book, like few others, have deeply enriched my understanding of music--as a thing of time, shape, and expression.

a MUST- READ for Musicians!
From Blum's first discussion of the "First Principle" through his Casals-inspired revelations about melodic shape, dynamics, and rhythm, this book is invaluable as a guide for true artistic expression. The line between music as a set of performance skills and as an interpretive art is clearly drawn, and the spirit of Casals beckons all of us who would be truly inspired musicians

An approachable text on interpetation from a master musician
David Blum writes an insightful and rewarding text based on notes taken from rehearsals, master classes, and personal conversations with Pablo Casals. According to Blum, the idea for the book came from Antony Hopkins who encouraged him to take his notes and memories and document them so that other musicians could benefit from Casals' musicianship. The book provides a study of the "laws of music" or "laws of nature" which Casals considered to be the essential elements of meaningful interpretation. The text serves as a guide to musicians, conductors, and music educators on the art of music making.

Most musicians know of Casals the cellist. Unknown to many, his conducting career spans a period of over sixty-five years. During his career as a conductor, rehearsals clearly revealed his ideas about music interpretation. The text records the oral statements and the aural interpretations made by Casals during his rehearsals.

Five chapters divide the text with each chapter representing the main areas of Casals' interpretive ideas. The last chapter serves as an application of the elements of interpretation combined to produce a performance. Every chapter includes printed music excepts, detailed notations of performance practice, insightful commentary from the author, and compelling statements made by Casals during the rehearsal of a particular passage. Topic areas covered in the chapters include The First Principal, Finding the Design, Diction for Instrumentalists, Perceiving Time Relationships, Insights for String Players, Casals and Bach, and A Casals Rehearsal: the Pastoral Symphony.

A unique aspect of Blum's book, the reader is encouraged to study and become involved in every music example. The music examples are excerpts from his performances on the cello, lessons with cello students, and rehearsals with the orchestra. Transposed to the key of C for easy reading, all excerpts are in treble or bass clefs. They have notated phrases, articulations, dynamic nuances, and other stylistic attributes illustrating the points of Casals' concepts. Blum tastefully adds Casals' vocal statements to enhance the music examples, "Casals cried out, Here is the anguish! - Let it sing at the top of the phrase!"

David Blum's book is well written and informative. The music examples with Casals' statements allow the reader to easily and quickly gasp the details of interpretation. This scholarly book with practical applications and insights is invaluable.

Indispensable for engaged couples & liturgists
Having worked with the author I knew of this book, but didn't fully appreciate it until asked to coordinate my best friend's wedding. It was a fantastic resource and gave us lots of good reasons to avoid many of the hackneyed and outdated "traditions" that really have nothing whatsoever to do with the Catholic vision of marraige.

Since then I've use the book several other times with other couples and have given it as an engagement gift several times.

Thorough and excellent resource!
When my then fiance and I were trying to prepare for our Catholic wedding, our wedding coordinator at our parish suggested we use this book. It was the best suggestion we got for preparing our wedding! This book helped us prepare our ceremony down to the finest detail, without being "preachy". It just gave us exactly what we needed, examples and all, and told us what we could do, couldn't do, and why. I highly recommend this workbook to any and all Catholic brides and grooms!

Excellent
This book is an essential guide to any one wishing to have a wedding ceremony that is as rich as the Catholic faith itself (also applicable to all faiths). It describes the why's and how's of all components of a beautiful celebration of the sacrament of matrimony and enables a couple to be the fully active, informed, hospitible ministers of the sacrament that the Church calls them to be.

Exciting and entertaining
This is another one in the American Girls series about Josefina Montoya, a ten-year-old girl living in the New Mexico of 1824 (actually January of 1825). In this book, the Christmas season ends with a successful party. However, just as the new year begins with a high note, Josefina feels the world pulled out from under her when her aunt Dolores announces that she is leaving the rancho and returning to Santa Fe. They are happier with Tia Dolores living with them, and they know that their father is. And so, the sisters begin their scheming...

The final chapter of this wonderful book is a highly informative look at the changes New Mexico experienced as it changed over the years. I must also mention that Jean-Paul Tibbles' lovely illustrations are an excellent addition to the story.

This final book in the Josefina story is every bit as wonderful as the first one, and definitely maintains the American Girls' tradition of excellence. The story is exciting and entertaining, and I especially liked how the author wove Josefina's faith into it, making it appear the natural part of her life that it would have been. My daughter and I loved this book, and we both recommend it to you and your daughter.

a very good book form the American Girls Collection
Changes for Josefina is one of the better books in the American Girls Collection. In the book, Josefina and her sisters have party for their friends and neighbors. After the party, Tia Dolores announces that she wants to move back with her parents. When Josefina and her sisters find out the real reason that Tia Dolores wants to leave, they find a way to get her to stay.

"Good Book *****************"
About a girl named Josefina who lives in 1824. She is Mexican and lives on a ranch with her dad and sisters and aunt. Her mom died two years ago. Her aunt who she calls Tia Dolores is going to leave and Josefina wants her to stay. Will her daring plan work?

My kind of adventure
After finishing Karin McQuillan's first two books, Deadly Safari and Elephant's Graveyard, I couldn't wait to pick up Cheetah Chase. I was not disappointed by this third Jazz Jasper novel at all. It continued to develop the heroine's character, her relationships and her adventures in the African Jungle. McQuillan has a way of weaving her plots through a story that teaches as well as excites. I eagerly await more from her.

More than a good mystery
Africa is about the last place that comes to mind when I think of a mystery novel, which made this book all the more fresh and interesting. The cultural diversity of the characters and the wonderful integration of wildlife into the story were added bonuses. I will definitely read other books by Ms. McQuillan. Highly recommended.

an exciting, amazing, mysterious, thrilling adventure.
This is a thrilling adventure that will take you all the way to africa, where you will experience fear, mystery, and even romance. It will stick you to your seat, you won't be able to put it down

The Chicken That Could Swim
I was so crazy about finding the mouse that I was dreaming about them at night. Regarding the sixth name, look on the first page where the publishing co. is named. The man who loves birds is reading the newspaper. Turn the book upside down and at the top of the page is the name Alonzo. Now I have a question: on the second to last page (So Nugget stayed with Silky), where is the mouse? Is just his head peaking out? Would love to know more about this author. Where is he from? Perhaps in a better world he will write more books to entertain young minds.

Thank you Mr. Adshead
Paul Adshead's books are my very favorite kids books, as an adult. I didn't discover this author until i was at a friend's house and had nothing to do...so i picked up the book on the coffee table, The Chicken That Could Swim. The author draws you into his world, and immediately you know if you have something very important in common, a hope for the future where animals would be at peace with man, and man at peace with the animals. Thank you Mr. Adshead for writing these books for very large kids also known as grown ups!

Truly entertaining
This was a fun book to read to my girls when they were young and now that they're older, they still classify it as one of their very favorites. The hidden pictures and words still continue to entertain both young and old in our family. Even though we've found them all, we tend to forget and have to search again.

Joyful and Delicious!
This book is a true joy to read and share. My four year-old loves it so much, he quotes it every time we bake (i.e., "cookies all for me!") and then we laugh together. We always end up agreeing that, just as the pig in the book discovered, good food is much better when shared. This one will be passed down to my children's children -- of that I am certain.

Attention Teachers!
This book is excellent for preschool through kindergarten, or special ed classrooms. Skills that are learned from the book include: rhyme/rhythm, counting 1 to 20, measuring and cooking.(There are two pages devoted to measurement, as well as a recipe for the cake.) The best thing about this book is that the pig learns to share, because he sees the value in sharing with his friends. This is an excellent book to help one teach this value.

A fun-filled trip through counting, baking and sharing!
My 2-year-old son memorized this book, learned to count to twenty, AND learned the basics of baking a cake. We even made the cake described in the book, and it tastes great. The illustrations are hilarious, and I love the lesson about sharing. (Will piggy decide to share his cake with friends??) In fact, I love the book as much as my son -- a rare and happy circumstance.

Lavishly illustrated and informative book about African cats
This book is proliferated with Paul Bosman's art. The art includes Paul Bosman's paintings and drawings capturing the moments in the life of the cats. We see the lioness facing it's pray, a leopard resting, a family of cheetahs, a male lion walking through the bush and so on. The illustrations cover lions, leopards, cheetahs, as well as smaller wild cats. I recommend this book for any nature lover, wild cat enthusiast or a person interested in African wildlife.

A gorgeous book!
A stunningly beautiful and fascinating book, Cats of Africa describes the continent's lions, leopards, cheetahs, and small wild cats. The text is accompanied by numerous gorgeous drawings and paintings. The book is both informative and gripping, with excellent desriptions of the behaviours and characteristics of the animals in the wild, as well as discussions of their futures. I strongly recommend it!
