Modernist dream
In a word,Light. Meier's ability to use light like a fine instrument is a site to behold. For those not knowledgeable of Richard Meier's masterpieces, you will be forced to become believers that although stark and sometimes serene modern architecture in his hands becomes true art.For modern architecture lovers this is a must read. Beautifully bound, and wonderfully sized this volume will be a welcome anchor on any coffee table.

Dynomite
This book is fantastic if you are a fan of modern resisential architecture that is not so avante-guard to be uninhabitable. Photos are excellent. I only wish there were more of the interiors.

Not just about Risk or E-Business
The title of this book need not deter you. Yes, it is aimed at both Test Managers (the risk elements) and at web testers (the E-Business content). However, if, like me, you fall into neither category, it is still a very worthwhile addition to your reading list and workplace library.

The authors use very practical examples from real life testing to illustrate points. A continuous analogy of an individual E-Business being like a shop, with potential walk-in customers, works very well. Some rather startling facts emerge too; the average visit to the Systeme Evolutif web-site (of which Paul Gerrard is the web-master) is less than two minutes. I am sure that is true of a lot of sites, including those that are payment-now, real business sites.

Everyone in testing seems to promote 'risk'. Here is a strategy for answering the inevitable questions on ready-for-live issues based on whether risks have been addressed. "When enough tests have been prepared, executed and passed to convince the risk-owners that the risk has been addressed, enough testing has been done".

I have dabbled in web testing, both formally and informally (the latter probably every time I use the internet). The techniques for addressing real and perceived E-Business risks have a large carry over into other (i.e. non E-Business) test forms. The sections on performance, usability and Large Scale Integration rung some bells with me, and the use of tools is both encouraged, and discouraged. Strange as it may seem, the way of doing this did not seem to be contradictory. The sections on why the concept of E-Business is different only seeks to place MORE emphasis on why a coherent risk strategy is necessary. With web applications, not only is the time-to-market critical, but the price of failure can be so much more disastrous.

Use of American spelling and currency (everything is quoted in dollars) jars for the British reader, and look out for the words "we", "us", and "our". These are sometimes used a little ambiguously. (Ask who "us" refers to). However, expect to be challenged, and encouraged on to the land of better testing. There is a wealth of source material provided, especially on tools, and toll providers. There are lots of web-based references; additionally, a significant number of articles and books referenced are from 2001 or 2002.

The preface gives one of the reasons for the book being the ordering of the vast quantities of information that there is around. What was set out as an aim has been achieved, and both Paul and Neil have brought their experience, knowledge and communications skills to benefit us all. One of the dedications says: "To all those testers who do the best they can, but always think they should do more". I for one appreciate that the book was written for me. Thanks.

Invaluable source of knowledge - excellent approach
Although the focus is on e_business testing this book has changed my views about the realities of risk-based testing for any environment. First, the authors give a dose of reality regarding the differences between 'best practices' provided in the testing body of knowledge that is growing into hundreds of books (less than two years ago there were only a few dozen books on software testing, so this is a positive trend for the profession as a whole). Second, the fallacies in conventional risk-based testing are exposed. Here the authors propose that testing be exclusively focused on product risk, instead of trying to encompass the wider scope that includes project and process risk. This, in my opinion, is sage advice and keeps testing focused on areas where it can contribute to a project's success.

Among the strong points of this book are it's clear writing, which is full of examples, and the logical sequence in which the material is presented. In addition, the clear definitions of general risk management and associated processes and procedures, and how it all ties together are among the most succinct I've read. However, the best aspect of this book is the way the chapters build upon each other, and the complete coverage of risk-based testing.

Specifics include a general chapters on risk-based e-business testing and types of web site failures that lay the foundation for the technical aspects of the book. These are followed by chapters that show how to develop an e-business test strategy, how to fit risk analysis to a test process, and a comprehensive treatment of test techniques and tools. The latter is especially valuable because it covers the full range of testing techniques that are tailored to e-business testing, which includes static, web page integration, functional, service and usability testing. This part of the book also includes security testing and large scale integration testing - both of which make this one of the most complete collections of test techniques for e-business as well as general testing.

The remainder of the book covers the context of e-business testing (including brief advice on how it fits within Extreme Programming and the Unified Process), E-business test organization, planning and specifications (a wealth of information for the test manager), and E-business test execution (which also addresses important topics such as incident management and testing in a live environment). The two appendices, Essential Web Technologies for Testers and Web Testing Using Home Brew Tools are also valuable.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who is involved in E-business testing, and also recommend that it be used in conjunction with Systematic Software Testing by Rick D. Craig by Stefan P. Jaskiel (ISBN 1580535089), which nicely augments this book.

A combination of documentary and prose
Readers of this book are drawn to a poetically rich narrative of a young boy's personal friendships and emotional maturation. Surreptitiously, a valuable history lesson is being absorbed about a culturally profound period in Wisconsin's past. River's Must Run brilliantly straddles the divide between a documentary and prose.

Dana Gretz, English Instructor Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwa Community College

A positively delightful story
A positively delightful story and one with considerable 'food for thought.' While the principal confrontations are between loggers and dam builders, Dr. Kending gives us valid insight into the co-mingling of other groups--a bright young boy faces, and eventually joins, the adult world; non-Catholics share common problems and experiences with their Catholic neighbors, white families glimpse the culture of Ojibwa people and vice versa; townspeople meet their country dwelling friends; unlettered and formal school educated learn mutual respect; first generation immigrants assimilate into the new world--to name some examples. People of various ages and backgrounds will find things in Rivers Must Run to relate to. If you had the opportunity to roam the woods someplace in your own youth you can thrill to Ahmeek's summer experiences and even city youngsters will delight in this young boy's adventures complete with having real American Indian playmates. If you're old enough to remember back 'before electricity' or 'before motorcars' or when vast regions were not served by railroads you can relate to this tale which covers the advent of such life-changing technologies. There's even something for the scientist in each of us with veiled but authentic references to such things as sound Doppler, the difference between the speed of light and that of sound and the three-phase nature of alternating current power. To quote myself, "a positively delightful story which leads me to plead, "C'mon Paul Kending, when are we going to get another like Rivers Must Run?"

Wonderful book
I really enjoyed this look at the Chicago that never is seen on E.R. He is a very talented writer. Sue

Fantastic
In 1946, former GI Ray Dudek has juts returned to Chicago after serving in the war. Instead of a hero's welcome, Ray is murdered during a holdup in the Riverview Amusement Park. His two closest friends, Joe Colleran and Mike Minogue leave town soon after that to open a bar in Florida. In 1985, Mike is murdered on a Chicago pier overlooking lake Michigan. When Margaret O'Mara reads about the death, she hires private investigator Paul Whelan to locate her brother, Joe, who she has not heard from since 1959. ..... Paul begins to investigate the case and quickly links the two murders that are four decades apart, especially since the deceased Mike loved to talk about his cronies who had a falling out just after the war. As Paul gets closer to the truth, he realizes that friends and lovers have kept a secret that if disclosed could lead to the deaths of the person revealing it and the recipient because someone wants the secret to remain hidden. ...... THE RIVERVIEW MURDERS is a fantastic who-done-it that brings alive the gritty North Side of Chicago. Paul, the low rent private investigator, is a great character who is for those readers who enjoy an old fashion hard boiled detective. The story line, like its four predecessors is fast-paced, action packed, and loaded with more twists than a street pretzel. Chicago is Michael Raleigh's kind of town as no one paints the town this well since Ferris's day off. .......Harriet Klausner

Rodeo Rocky
this book it great.kirsty gets upset by what she see's at a rodeo and decides to do sum thing about it. when everyone looses faith in her horse she is determined to prove them wrong. it will capture the hearts of all horse lovers.

An intereasting rodeo!!!!!!!
I love that book on Rodeo Rocky (Horses of Half Moon Ranch series) by author Jenny Oldfield & it must be a great book.

At a local rodeo contest, Kirstie is horrified to spot one badly-cut horse being forced back into thr arena.
She pleads for him to be withdrawn from the rodeo and persuades her mother to buy him for Half-Moon Ranch.
But training an ex-rodeo pony is not easy, and when Rocky throws Kirstie on a steep mountain trail, his fate hangs in the balance once more. Will Kristie win her fight to keep & tame the problem horse?

Some people will have to read this book to find out if Kirstie will win her fight just to keep and tame the problem horse.

In this book on chapter 1, Kirstie at the rodeo was watching the team roping & two riders had entered chutes to either side.

They all roped the steers legs & horns & in the book it said "I always feel sorry for the steers," she told Hadley quietly.

This is an intereasting rodeo & it kind of makes me want to go to the Ellensburg Rodeo & do calf roping there & Ellensburg is in Washington.

This is a great book & I loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wonderful book
An educational and very funny read. The facts are all true, but have been presented in a consistely funny and readable tabloid style. Maps, pictures, and fact boxes (and some very funny ads) support the text. Highly recommended.

A Rowdy Roman Romp!
Are you an Emperor or a slave? Take the handy questionaire in this book and find the answer, learning lots of Roman history along the way. My kids and I had a blast reading this, and remembered more facts about Rome than we got any from many other books. Great fun!

GREAT guidebook
This guidebook is not sanitized like the Fodors books. While there may not be a pages of color photographs, you will certainly come back with the flavor of Rome.

The book is laid out in a series of walks through the city with insightful/caustic commentary. The walks can be daunting and the recommended time for each walk if about right. However, the walks take you off the main throughfares of Rome and into the city.

I liked this book so much, I'm buying another by the same authors for a trip to Paris

witty, erudite-the real Rome revealed
We just came back from Rome with Facaros and Pauls in hand and can't wait to go back. I never read such a compelling, well thought out, and beautifully written guide in my life. All the other guides to Rome we saw were basic and boring and humdrum compared to this one--it makes the eternal city eternally fascinating. Sometimes we just burst out laughing aloud, and got some very strange looks from the Romans. Get it or regret it!

Incredibly entertaining, wild comic.
Sabre is one of the wildest comics I've ever read. Art and Story are both superb.

Sabre is like "Master of Kung Fu" (naturally since Paul Gulacy did that too), "Black Panther", "Punisher" and even "Sin City" rolled into one. Intellegent, beautiful, thoughtful and fast. It's a unique comic.

Don McGregor's SABRE set my hair on fire!
Finally! Don McGregor's work has for far too long been sequestered in the comic shops of America, and now, at long last, it is free to rampage right off the shelves (both real and on-line) and into the hearts of readers everywhere. I read SABRE when it first came out in 1977 and this new edition carries the same OMPH! impact as the original did. McGregor is an incredible advocate for his characters, no matter who or what his characters might be. Straight, gay, don't know, don't care, human, alien, stand-up guy or rat, all of his characters ring true. This can be said of all his work from period piece detective dramas to world-shaking science fiction conflicts, and it's particularly true of this one. SABRE is one of the first graphic novels produced in the USA, and it's still one of the finest. If you're open the experience, this is the book for you.

This book opens our eyes to new horizons of Native religion.
It is very rare to find an author who immerses you in the culture and religion of Native people as this one has. As a reader of Native American culture and religion I find this book to be a gem. With a focus on native archetypes, this author transports the reader to the reservation and opens the Native and non-Native to a spirituality built on ancient indigenous symbols.

Archetypal Theology?
Seldom have I viewed my culture as an archetype, and I am interested in reading this book. As a doctoral student who is a Cree pipe carrier, I have much weaving to do of my own. Theology and a classroom full of priests was where I first began my doctorate. It was a Bio-ethics course. I was amazed at the meeting of our two worlds, and as I pray about my studies, I know that the weaving of these two worlds is a part of it. A challenge that the author has undertaken is an unusual feat, and from the past work of this author, I would certainly say that it is worth reading.
