Why did she come back?
This is a crime story, but it's not a murder mystery. The crimes do include the murder of an enigmatic woman, but the other crimes are betrayal of friends, possessiveness, stealing the physical presence and love of a husband and father, and many more. The story is told from the multiple and constantly shifting perspectives of the major characters. This is one of the appeals of the book, although the central figure, Magda, is interesting enough in her own right. Especially tantalizing is her disappearance for two years. Although her husband cannot bear to ask her why she left, the reader learns enough of her life to form several possible answers. The question you are left with is why she came back. I feel the book rather lets you down here, but the journey is fascinating enough. The narrative style itself helps you slow your reading enough to explore the possible answers to why.

a relaxing read
This is not a book about The Beatles, but a novel in which The Beatles feature.
The author is known for the Christy Kennedy mysteries that he has written (a series of 6) but turns out to also be a huge Beatles fan and has built up quite a collection of Beatle memorabilia over the years.
The story begins in Liverpool in the late 50's when Theodore Hennessy (the "I" in the book) plays in a band called The Nighttime Passengers and at some point in the story he almost becomes the new drummer for The Beatles when they are looking to replace Pete Best. The main part of the story is about Theodore and his love for Marianne Burgess (with whom he has a relation, then breaks up, then has a relation with her again, breaks up again, etc until they finally marry) plus the relationship with his sister Kathleen. All of this takes place during the time The Beatles rise to fame and the story ends just as The Beatles break up. The history of The Beatles plays a prominent part in the book (you get alternating chapters which tell the story of Theo and Marianne, then a chapter about what The Beatles were doing at that time, etc).
It is very clear that the author knows his Beatle history well and his observations about the Fab Four are usually fair and to the point. I didn't find the story itself all too exiting, but it does have it's moments. All in all a good read for the summer holidays.

Old, but still a great read
I just finished re-reading this book after having read it when I was a child. It is one of William Steele's classic frontier stories. The dialog is rich, the action is fast paced, the characters are fairly well-constructed, and there is even a moral to this tale. Trapped by raiding Indians without much water in a small fort with his family and a few other frontier families, Chad's father stands up for the Logan family, a poor woman with a young son about Chad's age, and two smaller children. The woman's husband, called Traitor by the others who are sure that he is in cahoots with the Indians. The other settlers want to force the Logan family outside the fort but Chad's father, Raburn, won't allow it. At first Chad is repelled by his father's standing up for this family of a traitor, but through the book he learns that it's not fair to judge or blame someone for what another person does - even if it's that person's father. Chad learns to follow his father's advice given near the begging of the book and resolves to "think things through" before forming an opinion. Young readers might be forewarned that this book was written at a time when Indians were portrayed as enemies to the early settlers of the American wilderness. Violence and death are portrayed in the book, as well as, heroism and bravery. For older readers who read these books as youngsters, it's a very good read.

Global Cases of Intermediate Technology
This book presents cases written by different authors on from Africa, Asia and Mexico of flexible specialisation and innovation networks. It is suitable for industrialists/business people, as well as those interested in appropriate business systems development.

The well referenced and written contents span:

* A complete introduction- enterprise environments and collective efficiency, flexibility of labour markets, the growing importance of flexible specialization, new competition, technological change and technological networks, technological and social networks spatial elements (locations, clusters industrial districts), main research issues, an interdisciplinary approach, and conclusion .

* African cases- economic structure of small towns in Zimbabwe, diffusion of flexible techniques in small and medium-sized enterprises, new competition and flexible specialisation in Indonesia.

* Asian cases- lack of interaction between traders and producers in footwear industry, technological change in roof tile industry in Java, trade networks for flexible rural industry, and weaving flexibility in South Korea.

* Mexican cases- industrial districts and footwear industry, and the garment industry.

The development of flexible networks supporting full-lifecycle development/delivery of products/services and localising optimal marketplaces for producers, traders and customers is showing benefits across the World. Other examples include: the New Zealand hard business networks, many regional chambers of commerce and special interest groups, as well as the informally developed regions of exceptional world-class activity (e.g. Silicon Valley, UK Motorsports cluster). Perhaps a companion volume documenting and analysing such networks, as well as the impact of the Web, would be a useful addition to the series.

Overall stimulating, with 'structure' lessons applicable in many business situations.

If You Love Lighthouses
This book is for lighthouse lovers that are living in or interested in lighthouses of Florida. The book lists all the lighthouses and gives a brief history. Each lighthouse has a fact list and there are also directions on how to get there. Fees for entering the lighthouses and museums are also listed. This is a great book if you are planning a trip such as we are this summer. The only thing lacking is a good map of Florida showing the locations of the lighthouses. There is a map in the front of the book but it is too small and needs to be larger.

Excellent.
I included a number of recipes from this book when I recently cooked an 8-course dinner. The recipes are challenging, but the process for each dish was explained clearly. In the end, the dinner was magnificent. This is a book that will find a prominent place on the shelf of any gourmand or Francophile.

A story for every football fan!
Drawing mainly upon the short story traditions of such male magazines as Esquire, the New Yorker and Playboy, Paul Staudohar's anthology of football-related fiction presents a variety of largely masculine perspectives of gridiron football in a variety of styles; the "football-game-as-an-analogy-for-life" cliché (epitomized in the 1923 poem "Alumnus Football" that opens the book) and the inevitable breakdown of this view; the existential importance of the game for player and fan alike as a system to fill the void of an increasingly "unreal" world; and the consequences of the inevitable collision between the rigidly-controlled gridiron environment and the infinitely nebulous field of human relationships. There is a lighter side to the book as well; a wonderfully stomach-turning account of the physical toll of the game upon the human body; the humorous and bittersweet tale of a team facing the imminent prospect of crushing defeat; and a coach's comically unorthodox attempts to recapture the original pleasure behind playing football as a game and not as a job. Athletes and fans will recognize some of themselves in these stories, while non-fans will come closer to understanding the near-inexplicable allure of sports and fandom. By turns moving and hilarious, thoughtful and thrilling, Football's Best Short Stories not only offers a valuable insight into the important role that football occupies in the American way of life, but also gives voice to the myriad facets of the male sense of self.

For the good of mankind : August Forel and the Bahá'í Faith

August Forel's acceptance of the Bahá'í Faith
An interesting short account of the life of this eminent, world-renowned psychiatrist, entomologist, anatomist, social reformer and peace-reformer, Auguste Forel, born in 1848 on the shores of Lake Geneva in Switzerland.

This account of Forel's life was first written on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Forel's passing (1981).

Throughout his life Forel tried to understand religion, free from dogma and superstition, for he considered that true religion should be for the social good of all mankind. He deplored the fact that there was so much superstition in organized religion. All his life he had believed in the things that Baha'u'llah, founder of the Baha'i Faith, had taught, without realising the source. It was in the last 10 years of his life that he first came across the Baha'i Faith and from then on he wholeheartedly supported it for he recognized it as being the "church of tomorrow". He considered the Baha'i Faith to be the true religion of human social good without dogmas or priests, uniting all men on this small terrestrial globe. In a codicil to his will in 1921 he wrote: "I have become a Baha'i. May this religion live and prosper for the good of mankind; this is my most ardent wish."

On first hearing of the Baha'i Faith Forel corresponded with Abdu'l-Baha, the son of Baha'u'llah, and in reply 'Abdu'l-Baha wrote to him one of the most weighty letters ever written on the subject of philosophy. If ever there was any doubt in academic circles that Auguste Forel was a Baha'i, this study confirms the fact.
