For a begineers overview only. Otherwise borderline useless
I was very excited to get this book after reading the amazon reviews. But was very disappointed. A very simplistic look at Interdev, spends more time on very basic ASP, and fills 25% of the book with SQL server verbage. I read the whole book in less than 3 hours. Perhaps it should be titled a brief summary of ASP and interdev. I would not recommend this to someone who wants to learn about Interdev, nor someone that wants to learn about ASP. I'll pass on the reviews next time and go to the book store and browse first.

Awesome information and very helpful
Mr. Thurrott did an outstanding job with this book. It's one of the few techno books I've picked up in years and easily read from cover to cover. The book provides an excellent start for any one looking to use Visual InterDev to create dynamic web sites. I've always wanted to use Access and SQL databases to create dynamic web sites, and this book did an excellent job of explaining the fundaments. Mr. Thurrott's examples are clear and informative. I've looked at Microsoft's documentation numerous times and found using all of it very confusing and hard to understand. Implementing Microsoft Visual filled the gap left by Microsoft. This book proved that anyone could use Visual InterDev to create simply to complex dynamic websites. I strongly recommend this book

Excellent source for InterDev beginners.
This book is definitely recommended for those that are just starting Visual InterDev and aren't sure where to go first. The book is fairly thin and has many graphics so you will get through this book pretty quick.

I rate it a 9 simply because of the size. Many more examples could have been covered. Don't pass up this book though if you are looking for an introductory level book. The author is very clear and concise and the code samples work.

Good for travelers on a budget
I just wrote a review of Australia Handbook and decided to have a look at the reviews for Lonely Planet's Australia guide. I bought both books as well as Frommer's and Fodor's guides for my trip to Australia. I have used many Lonely Planet guides through the years, but must agree with the comments of other posted reviews--it is oriented almostly solely to young people out looking for a a job picking fruit and wanting to know the latest nightclub hotspot. I did find the first sections of this book to be thorough on the country's history and what to expect, but as for myself and my wife (40 year olds staying in motels and with a rental car) it was useless once we got there. Lonely Planet is also way behind when it comes to listing websites.

These books may serve budget travelers well, but for my money, it's the Frommer's or Moon book.

a great starting ground!
Australia is such a vast and diverse nation that it is impossible to cover the entire country in one book.

Lonely Planet was a great starting ground. It gave excellent overviews of all of the major cities, the best of the outback, and the superb national parks. Lonely Planet also publishes guides for every Australian state, a few areas, and many smaller guides to dining, and the cities.

My advice to any traveler to Australia is to read LP Australia before departing. Then, once you have a clear idea of what you want to see, read the LP guides specific to that area. Lonely Planet is by far the best for Australia that I have seen out there.

The world of OZ -- from the source
The new 11th edition (May 2002)of this Lonely Planet Guide is excellent. I grew up in Australia and travel back frequently. The publisher is based in Melbourne, so this book has unique "at the source" information and tips. This updated edition solves most of the problems of previous editions. Yes, things change -- so always refer to the most recent edition available. Australia is a fascinating island continent.

Academic concepts
I've only been able to read through the first 3 chapters of this book because it's written in a very dry, academic style. While it brings up a lot of interesting issues that affect VC's, it's done from an economic/academic perspective.

For example, it describes 3 different categories of covenants that restrict VC partners (overall fund management, activities of the general partners, and restrictions on the types of investments). But, rather than offer case studies on how these covenants play out in the development of the fund, it delves into statistical correlation of these covenants with different fund variables (such as size, rate of growth, and age of venture).

It's probably fascinating stuff if you're an economist, but I'm not sure it's that helpful to anyone who's setting up a fund or is interested in working for a fund.

A Solid Effort!
The Venture Capital Cycle is a thorough overview of the venture capital market that will be edifying to those who know little about the mysterious methods of private equity financiers, but self-evident to those with a background in corporate finance. Readers who have worked in or studied finance already are familiar with the tidal cycles that govern the flow of capital into early-stage companies, as well as the process through which money moves from institutions and individuals to fledgling enterprises. But we [...] strongly recommend that entrepreneurs read this book, which provides an exhaustive tour that will answer many - if not all - of your questions about where venture capital comes from, how you can get a hold of some, and how your life and business will change after you do. And if, along the way, you think that the authors sound too much like professors with their dense, academic prose, you're right.

Valuable and clear info for both sides of the vc process
We used this book in an MBA course on Venture Capital here at the University of Michigan b-school. I think this is an excellent book.

First, do NOT expect to be a book full of venture capital anecdotes. While that is always intersting, this book is a serious treatment of what the venture capital business is about: how funds are raised, how venture capitalists arrange deals to ensure adequate compensation for their risk, how investments are staged, how the investments are managed, exit strategies and methods, and more.

This is a lot to cover in a book of approximately 350 pages, but it is all covered very well. The writing is quite clear and readable. Though this is not a book for the general reader, it is not difficult to read if you have some background understanding of business theory and a touch of finance.

What is so helpful about reading this book is that people seeking venture capital will understand more about why things are structured they way they are. It isn't just arbitrary greed and control. It is a business deal that requires an expected positive return - you know - making money (which does concern self-interest (greed) and structure (control) - but with slightly more reasoning).

While people seeking to make venture investments will immediately understand why they need something like this book and a whole lot more, I believe it is essential for people seeking investment money to also have a significant understanding of this process. Why? Because the venture capitalists understand this process completely and the people seeking investments usually don't do enough of these deals to really know what is going on. And if they are too blind they will be sheared like sheep. They need to understand all the interests involved so they can argue on their own behalf and make the deal as favorable as they can.

In any case, while this isn't the only book you should read on the subject it is certainly a good one. It is of manageable length with a great deal of clear and helpful information. I find this topic fascinating.

Building Switched Networks
The author presents a decent overview in this book. The depth I was expecting was not present and so it was let down but to somebody who wants a overview this could be a good book. Hence 3 stars

Good broad survey
This book is a good broad survey of current directions in networking products. It is a practical guide to options available to today's network administrators. The length and content are good. The order of chapters and sections is good. The book is very up-to-date with the latest industry developments presented clearly.

Love the style of this book!
I like the overall content. Helpful hints, asides, and related topics. Very well written. I like the organization of this book. This book covers a very explosive part of the networking market. Layer 3 and above switches are being pushed by many, many different vendors.

Dateline: Troy
Dateline: Troy
Book review

The book Dateline: Troy is all about the war against the Trojans and the Greeks. They are fighting over a woman named Helen. The reason that they are fighting over her is because a guy named Paris was asked by 3 goddess` which one of them was the fairest. He eventually picked Aphrodite the goddess of love. Since he picked her she granted him the love of any one he desired. He chose Helen, a married Greek, to be his love. She went to him under the spell. The Greeks didn`t like this, so the war began.
I think this book is confusing because almost every page is about a different person. I also think this book is very exciting because they attack each other all the time. My favorite part is when the Greeks build the wooden horse and pile inside it. They give it to the Trojans saying that they give up. The Trojans take it inside their walls. When the Trojans fell asleep, the Greeks inside attack them while they`re unaware.
If you like books about war, love, and myths, this is a good book for you.

Troy
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read difficult books, because this book is full of big words. Or anyone who likes war, the book has alot to do with that. But the biggest reason to read this book is if you like and secretly raised him. Paris awarded Aphordite the golden apple and in return she made him invincible in love. The Trojans started a war with the Greeks, But eventually they called a truth. Of course it was broken and the war started up again. At first I didn't really like it but as it went on I did. By the end of the book i thought it was a really good. Like the newborn left to die i didn't like that. But when the war started and the action I liked it then. Another reason I liked it was that it had a big picture on every other page. Over all it was a good book and if I were you I would read this book.

joe's review
There was a king and a queen of Troy and they had a kid that was put to death when it was born,it did not die. He grow up and become the leader of Troy, than he went and fought the Greeks. It was call the Trojan war and Troy lost. They wanted even so they made a big horse filled with Troys men. They sent it to the Greeks castle as a present and they the Greeks took it in the castle. The man in the horse came out at night and killed all.
I would recommend this book to someone who likes Greek myths. If you like hard books this is the book for you with all of its hard names. If you like war books you may like this book.If you like all of the above this book is for you you would love it. It is also a good because it has things that are going on in the story on one side of the page and on the other there are things happening from the First World War to the Gulf War.
Even know my opinion of this piece of literature is I did not like it you I do not like these kind of books so if you do my opinion is you should get this book. Just because my opinion of the book is one thing does not mean you would not like it.

Only good if you know the program
This book is a good reference but not for those who are not proficient already in MAX. As others have stated, the examples often skip steps, assume knowledge of the workings of the program and show "this is what you should end up with" pictures that don't relate at all to what the instructions give. I get the impression also that each chapter was written by a different person because they cover material that has sometimes been discussed or later chapters cover basic material that was left out at the beginning. If you are beginner, don't buy this.

An extremely indepth insight into Max 2 for advanced users
This book is Great. It provides an indepth explanation of the concepts and abilities of 3D Studio Max2. It is definately for the more advanced user and is definately a must. The first Vol is like a big encyclopedia that explains the concepts but does not provide real hands on learning methods, This Vol. is by far the best of the 3 and is an important tool in every animators libary.

If you have a basic understanding, this book is AWESOME!
Well, Boss Hog may get confused easily, but don't let him shy you away from an excellent text. I still recommend this book to people learning Max 3. The tutorials in the first several chapters are very intelligently written, and attempt to tackle very complicated concepts in a very concise manner. The text has helped me master more advanced concepts and tools of both Max the program and animation in general. The section on character work, while a regurgitation of what you'll find in Illusion of Life, Timing for Anim, and Foster's works, is still helpful to the beginner. The first third of the book is also an excellent source of principles that any budding animator who's transitioning to 3D would be wise to read. I've been animating professionally for 7 years, and I think that this text is great. If you get lost on the tutorials, then just read the text and LEARN the PRINCIPLES since that's really the important thing that these experts have to share with you!

Returning my copy!
Like all the other books in its series, this book is simple and easy to follow. It starts with a brief introduction to Java programming before diving into JSP material. The topics that it covers include: using variables, creating and handling forms, dealing with cookies, adding javabeans, interfacing databases, error handling, custom tags, file handling and servlets.
However, it covers each topic ever so briefly, often ignoring critical details that would leave you unable to make your page display at all! For example, in the Javabeans section, the book tells me to look up my web server for where I store Javabeans. Generally, this book follows a narrow track of possibilities and is best utilized as a throw-away training manual.

a great book to start
I kind of agree other reviewers. This book is really for those who has the experience of JAVA and knowledge of related topics. I read this book for the running project of e-commerce course, in which the mentor assign group project to do a website to sell shoes. I know nothing about JSP before. But with this book, page by page, I got a big picture of how it works. Some coding can be used instantly to my project. I have a feeling, each time if embitious to buy a big book, it usually ends up with quit half on the way. Why not start with a easy one? If you have time and intrest, some nuts-and-bolts book could be for advanced phase. In a nutshell, this one is nice for the first glance of JSP.

Great beginner book on JSP and Java
This book is great for anyone wanting a quick understanding of Java and JavaServer Pages. I came away from the book with a great start creating JSPs and a good idea on setting up the Tomcat web server.

Not true
I happen to know exactly what happened throughout the ordeal of Paul Dunn and his trial. All of you who believe this is a truthful story have been decieved. He left out very vital information that led you to believe that he was completely innocent. He failed to mention how he managed to hide the evidence that led to the verdict. Paul got lucky.

Refreshing perspective
A husband, seperated from his wife, confronts her at their home regarding abuse charges she threatened to file. The wife is found dead from a shogun blast coming from a weapon owned by the husband. An open and shut case? Think again.
This book reviews the facts in the case from a criminal defense standpoint. Although it appears to favor the defense team's position, this is hardly surprising considering that the defendant was a collaborator in writing the book. Regardless, this is a classic presentation of a defense investigatioin. Despite the "Psychic Detective" nonsense alleged in the book, the author does an excellent job detailing the defense investigator's efforts in uncovering crucial bits of evidence for trial.
This book provides a refreshing change of pace to the standard true crime novel which leans heavily toward the police investigation and prosecution.

Great first true crime book!
Grave Accusations is an excellent first time true crime book.
Andrea Egger's writing style is concise, yet deep. I am impressed with Egger's ability to cover personal intrigue in this case as well as the inner workings of law enforcement, and the pain of tormented love without being sappy. The story IS fascinating, a real whodunit! The book held my attention. I wanted to find out if Paul Dunn, a New Mexico police officer is an innocent man. Read it and decide! Was Monica Dunn's death a suicide or a murder? Great ballistics and forensics info! If you think you have heard it all with ballistics tests, you HAVEN'T! You will not be dissapointed with this book if you like true crime stories. I look forward to reading more of her work.

Not really for experienced programmers....
I agree with several of the reviewers here who state that this book is not really meant for experienced programmers. The first few chapters, including section 1.2 "History of the Internet and World Wide Web" are REALLY not necessary.

There's a nice intro to the IDE, but you can get that from the Tutorials that come with Visual Studio .NET. The chapters on control structures, methods, object-based programming, etc. could be covered by putting them in a section simply showing the syntax. An experienced programmer, especially one coming from C++ or Java should already understand the basics.

I was really looking for much more in-depth information that I was able to obtain from this book. It's probably good for beginning programmers, or those who have not programmed in C++ or Java before, as it does cover the beginning topics well.

Despite the fact that the book isn't named well - the examples are very good (as they are in most Deitel books).

"Inclusive, Pleasant, Obvious and Example rich Book "
This book is intended for experienced programmers. I fond of this book much, because it explores the C# in depth and features 230 Live-Code programs, 402 Programming tips! This book provides all the essential, required details about C#. This book wraps not only C#, it also delves deep into all the allied advanced topics such as ASP.NET Web services, ASP.NET, ADO.NET, Windows Forms and XML.
The usage of wireless applications is rising rapidly. Within few years, the number of people browsing the Web from wireless devices will exceed the number browsing from desktop computers. This book provides all the details about the Mobile Internet Tool Kit. They introduce mobile Web controls and mobile Web Forms that can be used to create ASP .NET applications that target a wide range of mobile devices. This book also covers device-specific rendering and how to consume a Web service from a mobile Web application.
With this book, the C++, Visual Basic and Java programmers can get an exhaustive knowledge of C# and they can fabricate next generation of .NET applications. The coverage of the book is excellent and it launches with concise introduction and moves to sophisticated advanced topics.
"Inclusive, Pleasant, Obvious, Example rich Book which provide all the realistic approach for the Experienced Programmer's to dive deep into C#"

C#.NET Jump-Start
As an experienced Microsoft Access VBA programmer, I purchased "C# for Experienced Programmers" to get up to speed in C# quickly because that is where that I see my career heading.

I read the book from cover to cover. It covers the essentials of C#, as well as .NET concepts, in a straightforward, logical manner. The book highlights valuable tips, observations, and best practices throughout it that help smooth out the .NET learning curve.

Although some chapters cover concepts that are familiar to experienced visual programmers, you would expect from the book's title that it would not get bogged down with beginning, "how-to-program" topics and it doesn't. The bulk of the book is devoted to the use of syntax, namespaces, and classes unique to the .NET framework including ADO.NET, ASP.NET, Web Services, and XML.

Due to its immenseness, no one book can cover every nuance of .NET. If a reader wants to cover a topic in depth, this book provides references to additional resources at the end of most chapters.

The numerous code examples in this book work. The concepts presented in code can be applied to real world situations, often with very little or no modification.

The book, having been read, now provides a great reference as I begin to put the knowledge that I gained from it into practice. I recommend this book to professional programmers that want a jump-start into the "Brave New World" of C# .NET programming.

Good, but hard for readers who don't start at chapter 1.
This book is presented in a very linear fashion: you are expected to start at page 1 or run into difficulties. I myself was a complete beginner in the field of MFC etc. and the chapters on OOP in C++ (which I knew precious little about) were valuable. It is a good book for occasional bursts, but it is very compacted, explaining some points in ridiculous detail and not affording enough to others. I would recommend it only as a book to choose if you have read up about Visual C++ or C++ and find yourself in need of a recap.

Can't Recommend It
I got this book for the guys in our programming lab. Out of the entire book, only a few chapters turned out to be of any use. The database chapter, the internet programming chapter, and the imaging chapter gave information on the level that professional programmers need. Other chapters in the book seemed to be targeted at beginners, incongruous with the three good chapters. And still, other chapters were targeted at teaching the C++ language--curious for a book on Visual C++.

Good intro
This book gives you a good intro to a lot of Visual C++ topics. The section about the C++ language was helpful for me since I've been out of C++ for several years. There's a section that gives some background on MFC. While this isn't especially practical, it helps put everything in context.

The chapter on creating MFC windows was my biggest complaint. It was weak and I don't think I can use much of the information in my work.
