The Gospel of Buddha
Published in Paperback by Lotus Press (June, 1999)
Author: Paul Carus
Amazon base price: $13.95
Used price: $11.99
Average review score:

The Simplest place for Christians to start with Buddhism....
Although this is a really old and linguistically dated, for a variety of reasons this is the simplest place for a person familiar with the Gospels to begin an inquiry into the life of the Buddha (as opposed to Buddhism as a religion generally-- which is much to broad for this book to cover in its just over three hundred pages....) For a book that is almost one hundred years old, its author did a remarkable job of summarizing the sutras that detail the life of the Buddha and in providing charts, etc. such that Christians would grasp that yes, this man was teaching many of the same things as was the man who taught in their Bible.....

This is a good place to learn about the Buddha's life. However, a person versed only in this book would not be familiar with most of the forms of Buddhism as they were actually practiced-- it would be difficult to identify HOW Zen of Pure Land or Vajrayana Buddhism came to be having just this little book much in the same wasy it would be impossible to determine how Christianity had changed and developed throughout time having only the record provided in the New Testament, or Judaism having only the Pentatuch.....

For those acquainted with Buddhist literature, this book is vaguely similar in content to the Digha Nikaya ("The Long Discourses of the Buddha") in that both are trying to portray how Buddhism, or the thought and teachings of the Buddha were portrayed at the time of his life as opposed to any kind of philosophy, etc. which developed later (the Mahayana stuff). For those interested in this stuff, I would advise books by Robert Thurman (there are a number) and D.T. Suzuki (again, the same) as the easiest to understand in regards to Indian and Tibetan forms and East Asian and Zen forms respectively.

I highly recommend this book....

This version of Gospel of Buddha lacks illustrations.
This is a nice book for Christians who wish to grasp the message and principle beliefs of Buddhism. Carus presents the Buddha's life in a collection of stories from his birth, attainment of enlightenment, teaching, to his death. Well written, it emulates the biblical style of the King Jame's Bible, occasionally puncuated with Ye, Thou, Thy, and so on. The stories are enjoyable but short and somewhat numerous. Also included is a glossary of terms and a concordance with passages in the New Testament. This edition has been reset and lacks the original intricate illustrations by Olga Kopetzky. The pages of the book were also stragely scented. I bought this to have a hardcover version but prefer the Open Court copy made from the original plates.

Life of Buddha written in the style of Christian Gospel
311 pages, illustrated. This edition appears to be made from the original plates, with original intricate illustrations made for the work by Olga Kopetzky. Also included is a glossary of terms and a concordance with passages in the New Testament. This book convinced me that Christianity is historically the child of both Judaism and Buddhism.

happenin book
talk about a book thats happenin..this book is it. great choice for those that want alternate chord changes. and the bass lines....awesome. a little weak on the sustained chords but over all it works. although the book doesnt always stick to the traditional jazz changes there is plenty of room to improvise...just pay attention to where the sustained chords should be otherwise this book is fun

Perfecto
Spot on Paul. This book took me thru some changes. I laughed....I cried. But in the end I was whole.

A remarkable assemblage of waterfalls
The authors of this book have tracked down, and provided color photos, of no less than 250 waterfalls in Yellowstone. While some were previously well known, many are new discoveries or re-discoveries of falls not seen in many years. That so many notable falls could occur in one area (even as large as Yellowstone)is remarkable; that so many significant falls could have remained to be discovered is downright ming-boggling. The authors provide interesting histories and excellent photos of each fall, and the book will be a joy to read and look at for any waterfall lover. My slight quibble is that while they provide coordinates and category of access for each fall, they don't provide directions or hiking distance. (In fairness, it can well be argued that if the information isn't readily available elsewhere for a given fall then the trek is one that should only be undertaken by a hardcore hiker.) Despite the quibble, this is a great book for any waterfall lover, and especially for one planning a trip to Yellowstone.

Driveguide, hiking guide and backcountry exploring guide!

Waterfalls are one of natures natural high producers. Do a search on negative ions and you will find that falling water creates an abundance of negative ions in the air. Breathing in this charged air mixture gives a body a natural, invigorating, temporary high. In their book, the authors have obviously been infected by this condition as evidenced by there irrepressible quest to seek out more and more sources of the negative ion producing waterfalls.

This book scores high marks on many fronts. With three different authors contributing, the book does a marvelous job of providing a general education on waterfalls. By clarifying the terms and classes of the waterfalls described, author Rubenstein helps to give personality and color to each individual plume.

Author Whittlesey's extensive historic perspective of the park gives each of the known waterfalls a vivid background description. When the authors caution you not to lean over the trail barrier too far to view a particular waterfall, they then follow up with the details of the tourist that died falling down that very cliff at the same site. As a drive guide to Yellowstones' waterfalls this book cannot be beat. All of the easily accessed falls are covered and described in detail including seasonal variations. For the typical tourist driving through the park, this book will appeal immediately because of the revelation that many more falls are visible with just a short car stop and walk to a viewpoint.

As a hikers guide to the Parks waterfalls this book will have even more appeal. Having spent over 15 years researching the back country for this book, author Mike Stevens has been to many of the falls on repeat occasions under a variety of conditions. In this aspect the book becomes a must for anyone hiking in the back country of Yellowstone. All of the standard trail recommendations are detailed along with accurate descriptions of how to find the falls and experience them in their best display. There are so many falls in the Yellowstone region that this book will certainly add color to almost any hike in the park.

Yellowstone Park is like a huge treasure chest of wild gems. By revealing and putting names to some of the previously 'unknown' falls the authors have dug a little deeper into the treasures and helped us realize there is a lot more value in this park than any of us realize. For the experienced Yellowstone back country explorers this book is a must. The authors even give GPS coordinates to many falls that have previously not been written about. Many of the falls have no trails and require at least an overnight stay in the back country. Others are so inaccessible that the authors honestly suggest that the strenuous hike is not worth the effort. The authors even give suggested locations for other waterfalls that have yet to be discovered.

Being a Yellowstone park fan myself I give this book my highest rating and only wish it would have been available when I was employed in the park. The authors show a true enthusiasm for the whole park not just the waterfalls. This book will make you want to get out and get some of those negative ions from the cascading waters. From the text and photos it is apparent that the authors have already had a healthy dose of their own!

A Landmark Book on Yellowstone
This is a truly amazing book on Yellowstone. I have not seen one like it. Although much of the book is devoted to newly discovered waterfalls, all the famous ones are in here too. Like Lower Falls, Tower Falls, and the Gibbon Falls. It makes this a great book for any lover of Yellowstone. Whether you've been to the park for a day or visited every year since childhood like myself you will enjoy this book. Even if you just want information on a beautiful part of America.

It has so much information. Waterfall heights, locations, streams and much much more. The hundreds of photos, which are all color, are beautiful; and the numerous maps are very helpful.

If you love Yellowstone, waterfalls, or just great natural scenery you'll want to add this classic to your collection.

Amazing mastery of the English language.
Nothing beats James Jeffery Paul's uncanny mastery of the English language. Harry McCreedy is depicted as a coy man with a "steel rod" shoved inside of him who meets the girl of his dreams and becomes, in many ways, a new man. I highly recommend this novel to anyone interested in reading an entirely new kind of novel. Sit back and enjoy Paul's nigh-poetic prose.

POLITICAL CORRECTNESS TAKEN TO EXTREMES
This novel is a cautionary tale about a culture gone mad. One in which we judge people by the color of their skin-in this case the darker the better. When you read it expect to get angry, because you will be. Expect to cry, because you will.

UNFORGETABLE STORYLINE!
Is there any higher achievement by an author than to imbue their story with whatever qualities etch it indelibly upon the reader's memory? This quality is posessed by Paul. This novel shines among such literary novels as have seen the press this year. Do not allow it to pass without reading it.

Delightful
I enjoyed the opportunity of hearing a reading by Paul Muldoon last spring and this semester I'm taking a writing of poetry class. I had to do a presentation on a living poet and I picked up one of his latest collections and it's like the title of this review, delightful. There are so many different styles of eccentric poems in this one collection and some that contain such obscure literary references that it invokes a sense of bewilderment and leads to a trail of website-hunting to figure out what he's talking about. But it's okay, because many of the poems can be enjoyed at face value, but if you want to dig deeper you can. He's one dang clever guy and this collection is definitely enjoyable.

Great book. Absolutely wonderful. Buy it.

(I had written a longer, more interesting review, but it was apparently lost on the web.)

Mr. Muldoon's Neighborhood
Is it possible for one person to be the best American poet and the best Irish poet at the same time? Muldoon certainly lays a strong claim to both titles: his Irishness lends him a musicality far superior to that achieved by most contemporary Americans, while his American side is the source of a far-ranging brashness, an ambition, scope and post- modern adventurousness that makes many Irish poets look rather, well, staid. "Hay" is a brave and experimental volume, more Byronic than ironic (though there's plenty of both) that takes place in a mostly domestic setting. As Muldoon wanders around his house and neighborhood and reports on what passes before his eyes and through his mind, the reader is treated to a wild and ceaseless cinematic display that is at times violent, at times kooky, not infrequently nostalgic, and often reminiscent of of Borges, Rilke, or Berryman (not to mention Kurosawa, Kubrick, and Scorsese.) "Long Finish" probably is the most moving piece here, one of the best love poems of the last ten or twenty years, while "The Bangle, Slight Return" is is an intriguing crossword slash jigsaw puzzle that promises boundless entertainment and befuddlement. This book should be sold in airports, distributed free to hotel rooms . . . it's groovy, baby!

One of those books that changed my life--still changing!
I bought this book 2 years ago. I wasn't able to absorb everything in this book at the time, because I was in a nervous breakdown. Now I've been in therapy and on medication for 2 years, and I'm stable. I picked it up and started reading just 2 weeks ago again, I'm reading it everyday, highlighting and highlighting all the good insights, and everytime when I open up the book just started reading something I've already read, I still get new insights about the healing process. I highly recommend this book!

Very Important
It does not take psychology to tell us that we all have within us a child. However, it may take psychological work to show us that we are profuse and insistant at shutting this child out.

We are repulsively repressive creatures. I did not take the suggestions of this book and apply any of them. I just read it. And, sure enough my life is slowly going through the motions discussed in this book.

Do not expect this or any one book to help you through your lifes troubles. What you read is what you need to hear for now. Your life will show you what you need to do, and you cannot rush or speed your way through the many recoveries you might need. If you have a sincere lack of fulfillment, if you keep repeating the same mistakes, if your life seems to keep going nowhere. You may very well have to clean house.

This book may show you what you have been doing to yourself all these years. I am a firm believer that this entire planet is peopled with broken hearts..many of us live the lie that we are fine, when in fact our heart was broken years ago and we have yet to acknowledge it, let alone heal it.

I learned to communicate with my daughter and love my self
Review

I read "Healing Your Aloneness" because my daughter asked me to. She felt it would help me understand the type of therapy she was involed in and give us a common language that might improve the quality of the communication between us. I am so very glad I followed my daughter's lead.

This book taught me the Inner Bonding process in such a beautiful way, with moving stories from the lives of some of the authors'clients. It helped me see that, in responding to my daughter's

wounded Inner Child, I was in "Intent to Protect" my ego instead of "Intent to Learn" about my daughter's pain.

I thought I was helping to heal the gap between us by the things I said to my daughter. But what I learned from the non-judgemental way the authors helped others understand how a "Loving Adult" relates to a wounded "Inner Child" showed me why she stayed distant.

Now, when my daughter talks about her wounded Inner Child, I have the awareness and the tools to let her know I hear her heart. We are not home yet, but the gap is closing. My daughter now knows that she can trust that I love her, that I will "hang in there" with the healing process and that, if she lets me know what her Inner Child needs, I will try my very best to provide it.

"Healing Your Aloneness" gave me another gift. It helped me get in touch with and listen to my own Inner Child. He is seven. His name is "Billy," He, too, has wounds that have not healed. He, too, is angry at me for not listening to him, for not being there. I am continuing to bond with him from my "Loving Adult." He is so bright,so wise, so needy, so capable of joy. I love that little boy and he too is beginning to trust that I do.

I am grateful that the authors have put the Inner Bonding process in a book that is such a joy to read. Reading it has not only helped me have the loving relationship I so wanted with my daughter, it has helped me to love myself.

wrong author name
hey people, don't want to seem like a pedant but you've mixed up the author's name and the publisher's - ie Rotovision is the publisher while Paul Murphy is the author. How do i know this? I wrote the book.

Cheers

paul.murphy@bbc.co.uk

excellent contributors
what do Tomato think when they do a project? How does Paula Scher work? What about AMX Digital or Aboud Sodano who do ALL of Paul Smith's graphic design work. This book has got them all plus attik, April Greiman, VSA, scott makela etc.

The style is accessible and readable while following the development process in lots of detail.

definitely worth buying
As a working design professional i'm always disappointed by so many of the garish coffee table books that purport to be about graphic design but in reality are an embaressment. This book scores highly on several points: *a great range of contributors from Pentagram to Tomato *well written with lots of interviews with the designers *well chosen projects examined in depth and detail

This book also realises that great design isn't about the latest PhotoShop tricks but about real thought and creativity.

This was the book that initiated my love for reading.
This was the book that initiated my love for reading. As a fourth grader, I was drawn to the title as well as to its apparent 'novel-like' format relative to the slimmer picture books that were on the lower grade shelves in the school library. For the first time, I found myself being pulled into a storyline, so absorbed by the mystery that unfolds that I couldn't put the book down. (I think that it took me two or three days to finish as a nine-year-old, and I found myself re-reading it until I could recite dialogue: "Home," shouted Jed. "Milk and Cookies," shouted Bill. Liza ran to the front door....) I also remember being impressed by how well the family got along, including the three sibling protagonists.

I highly recommend this book as a starter 'novel' for young children who are prone to becoming avid readers. Follow-up with the more complex Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew mysteries, the Chronicles of Narnia, Robertson's "Henry Reed" series, and M. L'Engles "Time Quartet" (A Wrinkle in Time.)

Great fun for kids who love solving mysteries!
I read this book when I was in grade school. I am now a mother of four children, the oldest is 9 and the youngest is 9 months. I have been looking for this book for a couple of years off and on so I could read it to my children. I loved reading this book as a child and want to share that experience with my children. I know they will love this story as well, and it will give me a chance to spend some good quality time with them as they learn to love to read. This book started my interest in mystery solving novels. It was very popular in my school and on high demand. I checked out of my school library several times to re-read it when I could. I LOVED IT!!

My childhood favorite!
As a child, I read this book from front to back countless times. I loved this book! Haunted House is perfect for young readers. The end result is the love of reading and the fueling of a young mind's imagination. Get this book for a young reader and you've given them a book that is my most cherished childhood story!

EXCELLENT FOR KIDS
I PURCHASED TWO OF THESE BOOKS AND MY EIGHT YEAR OLD DAUGHTER LOVED THEM. SHE FINISHED BOTH IN LESS THAN THREE DAYS. HIGHLY RECOMMEND FOR ANY LITTLE GIRL WHO LIKES HORSES AND LIKES TO READ.

I LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I think all the pony pal books are great because the girls
are pony lovers and they have LOTS of pony adventures, also,
Jeanne Betancourt does not axagerate like some authors do.

Better for motivation than as a "how-to" guide.
This is a great book for young players who want to take their game to highest level in high school and prepare for soccer at the college or even professional level. It teaches some advanced moves, but its real strength is helping young players understand the discipline and love for the game it takes to play at the highest levels.

Excellent Book for the young high school player
This is fantastic book for the young soccer player. The book is written to the level of a high school player and details the passion and discipline it takes to make it to the next level. The tips and drills to perform with friends and on your own,are with out a doubt, excellent and should be done on a daily basis. I highly recommend this to all youth soccer players and coaches.

This is a thoroughly enjoyable and informative book
When I first began reading the book by Paul Caligiuri, I could not put it down...I found my self reading the first paragraph of each chapter until I got to the end. Then over the next week, I read the book thru again twice. I have re-read it well over 5 times and pick up something new each time. I defy any serious soccerite to read this book only once!
