Brainwashing and the Cults
Published in Paperback by Borden Pub Co (June, 1980)
Author: Paul A. Verdier
Amazon base price: $3.00
Average review score:

An expose on capturing the human mind.
This little book was published in 1977, when "brainwashing" was just coming into public awareness, and the potential of "hypnotism" was reaching its zenith. The topic created feelings of excitement and fear. In addition, there were those who chose to dismiss the entire subject as incredible, and those who formed their own misguided opinions while not bothering to learn anything about it.

The growth of "human potential" cults in the 60s and 70s brought brainwashing to the media, and an industry of "deprogrammers" kidnapped teenagers and young adults from self-styled communities in an attempt to "save" them. The young adults protested the violation of their civil liberties with the help of lawyers provided by their chosen communities. Whether or not they had been brainwashed became impossible to prove in the face of the denial, and who was going to control these vulnerable young people became a matter outside the realm of law. While the issue of brainwashing and mind control could never be proven, it continued to be insinuated in various legal venues and in the media when it might appeal to the emotions of popular culture in support of or against a verdict, i.e. against Charles Manson, in support of Patty Hearst.

This book appeared at a time when the "cults" of the 60s and 70s were at their peak. It is a clear and documented explanation of how and why brainwashing works, its history, its dangers, and its potential benefits. I give it four stars because it is dated, but it is important history nonetheless.

Whatever benefits hypnotism may have can be attested to by, perhaps, the growing market in "self-hypnosis" self-help audiotapes and video cassettes. The dangers, however, at this point in time, have far outweighed the benefits, to the extent that the topic can hardly even be discussed, though never has it been more important. Therapists are so afraid of being accused of "implanting false memories" that hypnotism is not even being used as the tool is could be. Survivors of "mind controlling ritual abuse cults" have no place to go with their memories.

Repeatedly, in several places, the author clearly indicates that "brainwashing has come to America." It is a call to reality, a demand to come to terms with what this means for our people, and our future.

At a time when schools and workplaces are no longer safe havens from suicidal mass murderers who never see a trial, when an unexplainable event like 9-11 leaves us, in terror, believing anything the mass media tells us about it and willing to do anything suggested in response, it is crucial to understand the phenomena of mass hypnosis and the dynamics of mind control. It is the only way we will ever be able to begin to see clearly how we are being manipulated.

This book is out of print. I am not selling mine. However, I see there is one used available. I would grab it, if I were you.

Breach of Confidence

exciting legal thriller
Associate attorney Michael Elliot looks forward to making partner at the renowned Davis and White firm. Michael works in the Los Angeles office, but is assigned by Peter Raven to work with Junior Partner Jonathan Gage of the New York City headquarters branch to insure that the Trinity Corporation paperwork is filed in a timely manner in upstate Albany, New York.

The next day, Michael following up as directed, calls to speak with Jonathan only to learn that the lawyer committed suicide. Though almost too late, Michael makes sure the Trinity Corporation papers are filed on time. The head office orders Michael to New York to service Jonathan's clients especially Trinity Corporation. However, Michael soon realizes that this customer has embezzled funds and committed inside trader fraud. However, the entire paper trail and other circumstantial evidence point towards Michael aiding and abetting the criminal activity.

BREACH OF CONFIDENCE is an exciting legal thriller starring a wonderful hero who turns from wild-eyed believer into classic skeptic. The story line is fast-paced though a romance seems unnecessary to the prime plot yet somehow makes Michael seem even more huggably shy. Fans will want to read this cynical look at legal firms and Eben Paul Perison's previous police procedural legal thriller THE SEVENTH SIN as both pack an entertaining wallop.

Bronco Billy and the Runaway Coach : Playmobil Play Stables Series

My son loves the toy that acts out the story...
The horse is the hero. My son loves to act out the horse's story while we read the book. The storyline is slightly unbelievable (no horse I've ever met can jump over another horse or run full-tilt through a mine) but it's still fun. I have mixed feelings about guns and weapons in the Playmobil toys, and it was nice to have a chance to show my son that guns could also be used in place of pagers in the Old West.

Budgeting: Profit Planning and Control
Published in Paperback by Pearson Higher Education (01 May, 1988)
Authors: Glenn A. Welsch, Ronald W. Hilton, and Paul N. Gordon
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

A book for students of budgeting
This book aimes at giving the reader a comprehensive picture of the budgetprocess from the creation of the different parts of the budget to the finished result, and the processes after the completion.

The authors try to make it the most complete, practical and readable book about budgeting.

I think, that the result is very good. The only things I miss is more emphasis on the subject of making the budgetassumptions and the difficulties in educating people in the company in the budgetprocess.

The Business of Running a Library: A Handbook for Public Library Directors
Published in Hardcover by McFarland & Company (November, 1991)
Author: Paul John Cirino
Amazon base price: $34.50
Average review score:

A Valuable Resource
Cirino proves to be an enthusiastic and sophisticated advocate of the library profession. From the management aspect, his recommendations are experienced and current. Aware that the running of a public library is a business, the author has written a valuable handbook for public library directors and students of library schools. In the chapter on recruitment and training, which I enjoyed and appreciated, Cirino addresses the issue of inadequate pay and working conditions. The amount of devoted advocates of public library service suggests the increase of prestige, pay, and improved working conditions over time. Sufficient time and effort must be spent training the high-quality people that libraries must attract. Advancement of the staff's exposure, experiences, education, and the encouragement of growth and change will help set a higher standard for people, libraries, and our profession.
