A must read - character, intrigue and adventure
Eagle with a Badge, a Texas size compilation of life experiences by a living action hero. The cavalry arrives and most of the time saves the day, so if you enjoy Clancy's Jack Ryan or Cussler's Dirk Pitt this is a must read. This book provides insight into the often hidden and rarely discussed struggle between the dark side of life and the forces of good from the real perspective of one who was there. A man of humble origins becomes an authentic modern day hero using technology of today and his impeccable character of yesterday. Truly a remarkable true life adventure.

Flying
Because I live with two pilots, I was very impressed with the descriptions of the flying involved! When I read about incidents in areas that I am familiar with I felt just like I was in the helicopter with the crew! I would recommend this to anyone interested in flying!

At last--a book that includes Aviation and Law Enforcement
I was excited to receive a copy of this book from my wife and after starting it, could not put it down. I have been a private pilot for many years, and have worked in the Criminal Justice system for over 30. While I have many books on both subjects, this was the 1st I have seen that combines both. Paul does what I believe to be an outstanding job of addressing the topics in a manner that holds the interest of a large cross section of backgrounds. He gives enough information for non-pilots to understand the problems associated with the operations, yet does not bore experienced pilots with elementary detail. It is obvious the book is written by a veteran Law Enforcement officer as it provides an insight that captures the emotional impressions of adrenaline enhanced operations involved in this field that are experience by all officers, but is artfully done in a manner I have never read before. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in aviation, in law enforcement, or both.

Clear and enjoyable reading!
As a quick primer, I found this book to be terrific. And the dry humour was appreciated as well. Never thought I'd make it through so quickly, and yet come away with such a good appreciation of the subject matter.

Finally a Book for Non-Lawyers
This is good for non-lawyers who work in management and have no idea what IP means, nor how to make this form of property benefit (or not harm) your company.

This book whet my appetite for more details. I would recommend this book for anyone who needs a crash course in IP.

Business Professional from New York
This book took all the mystery out of the complex issue of intellectual property: what it is, how it works, and how it can work for you. Easy to read and comprehensive.

Highly recommend for insomniacs
I expected a book with some inside dirt on the recording industry but this is a sleeper recounting the author's 40 years working in Warner management. Those 100 or so souls who actually care about the mundane history of Warner records will enjoy this book. The rest of us would be better off with a subscription to Rolling Stone.

Fast Times at Warner High
Not only is this a wonderful and ambitious book by Cornyn & Scanlon, but it is also a great tool for young musicians because this book takes the mystery out of the record business. Cornyn has a wonderful appreciation for great stories, but he's also bright and is able to recount the stories behind the signings of artists and the whys in great detail. He also captures the energy and team effort of all of those Powers-That-Be (Were) at Warners because it was for the love of the music.
The turning point in the book is when after an exhaustive 8-10 hr meeting about sales units, how to change the corporate structure Cornyn got into this car to drive home and realized that during the whole 8 - 10 hr meeting, no one mentioned music. These guys were from the streets and got into the industry because of their passion for music.

The pace of the book is terrific, starts at the biginning of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Studio, builds up to the peak, then the reader is slowly let down when Cornyn starts talking numbers instead of artists.

It's a fun ride thru the "inside track"....enjoy!

Barney Hoskyns in MOJO
LET ME 'fess up. This is a book I would kill to have written.
It's a book I've been saying should be written for the last
ten years a book, a huge book, about possibly the hippest,
bravest, most nurturing record company rock'n'roll ever spawned. Now Stan Cornyn, a Warners "insider's insider" if ever there was one, has gone and done it with help from smart Rolling Stone vet Paul Scanlon.

"The really important factor was that we were a younger company than Columbia," Cornyn said when I interviewed him in 1993. "We weren't structured so tightly that we couldn't bend."

Bend Warner Brothers did or at least Warner Bros. and Reprise Records, under the inspiring helmsmanship of sometime Sinatra accountant Morris "Mo"Ostin and Boston disc-jock Joe Smith. For a golden half-decade, roughly 1967-1972, Warner-Reprise was the ultimate haven for the crème of the talent pouring out of (and into) the canyons of Southern California. Between 'em, Mo'n'Joe bagged the signatures of Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young,Randy Newman, Joni Mitchell, Ry Cooder, Fleetwood Mac, Van Morrison, James Taylor, Frank Zappa, Little Feat, Van Dyke Parks and on and on and on. Cornyn calls that "a spurt of prescience heretofore unknown in the record business". Frankly, it's hard to argue.

Warner-Reprise didn't do too badly either side of those halcyon five years, of course: from the Everlys to REM, Ostin and Smith green-lit signings that helped the WM Group shift gazillions of albums. But that heady turn-of-the-decade stretch, full of bold impulses and daring risks, is the guarantor of Warners' place in the history tomes.

It's also why Exploding is as much a lament a "They Don't Make 'Em Like That Anymore" about record execs as it is a racy, fact-packed narrative about company politicking. Like Cornyn, the Creative Services ace who conjured up mad as for the emerging underground press ("Win a Dream Date With the Fugs", "the Pigpen Lookalike Contest"), Mo'n'Joe 'n Lenny Waronker, and others like them cared deeply about talent. And the talent, generally, cared about them.

Don't get me wrong: Stan's yarn is first'n'foremost about players, workaholic Jews jockeying for position in worlds of fast deals and loaded stock options. Stan, a token Burbank goy, is as besotted by the greed and manoeuvring of the David Geffens and Bob Krasnows as he is by the talent-rich rosters of Warner-Reprise, Atlantic, Elektra and the other labels woven into the WM fold. Written in prose that's at once manic and
jovial and with both eyes on a Vanity Fair serialisation Exploding contains swathes of detail about money, sales, executive toilets and, above all, who reported to whom. If you want to read about Joni'n'James and all the other ladies'n'gents of the Canyon, you may be better off elsewhere.

If, on the other hand, you dig sweeping accounts of musical empires, and you loved Hit Men and The Mansion on the Hill, get your teeth into Cornyn, whose sardonically honest take on the vanity, megalomania and brilliance of the key dramatis personae from Ahmet Ertegun and Jac Holzman to Steve Ross and Seymour Stein is never less than entertaining and nearly always affectionate. ("There are the shrewd," he writes nicely, "and then there are the shrewder.")

Cornyn, retired for several years and living the sweet life in Santa Barbara, says he still talks to people at Warners. "Stan, it's just not like it was," they sigh to him. "Now it's just about money and covering your [rear]."

Once 'pon a time, it was about money, covering your [rear] and making astonishing music. Who's to say it couldn't still be?

Valuable, easy-to-read advice for start-up entrepreneurs.
This easy-to-read book, which focuses on avoiding the common mistakes made by most new business owners, also discusses the telltale warning signs of failure, how to deal with them and how to prevent potentially fatal problems. Adams offer basic financial tips--how to devise a simple cash analysis report, prepare a budget, put together a one-page financial statement and more--and touches on such topics as accounts receivable, profit margins, budgeting, cash management and collections. Adams, himself once on the brink of business failure, clearly and pointedly addresses the risks that concern all entrepreneurs, reveals the countless threats most have never considered, and shares some cogent counsel. This one is certainly worth a read.

Insightful, informative and a great read...
...The concepts and ideas in this book have proven invaluable. Starting my first business, I avoided many of the failures other have experienced and have built this small company to a 5 million dollar a year operation thanks to the many insightful examples and passages. In particular, I was able to start the business with little cash, and by using my vendors credit, I was able to build the company without accumulating any long term debt. Its just great to have a guide to help you through the many complex issues in starting, growing and running a small company......

Scott R. Adams - President and CEO - Digital Video Communications, Inc.

A must-read book for the aspiring entrepreneur.
As a part-time, adjunct professor who teaches in the evening management courses and as a management consultant, I find that Dr.Adams avoids the conventional academic jargon and the everyday stuffiness frequently found in the management literature. He writes in a matter-of-fact, easy to read, conversational style. His vast experience based on his personal near-failures and those of others provide a wealth of worthwhile material. I encourage all who are contemplating entrenpreneurship to read this book. I intend to urge my college to make this book required reading for all management degree students. Additionally, I intend to integrate Dr. Adams's "points to remember," found at the end of each chapter, in my work as a management consultant as I assist CEOs and their organizations in enhancing their efficiency and effectiveness.

84 short lessons on business leadership
84 short lessons which can be read independently. Each lesson is mainly a short advice, including some common sense. It will not make you a MBA, but it certainly gives you series of inspiring ideas and thoughts. Some live examples would have lifted this book to the top. Forget about moving cheese. Buy it, read it, act it.

Solid, high-octane advice
This value of this book is its succinct nature and spin on thought. The majority of the advice presented by Mr. Lemberg is valuable and viable. However, Mr. Lemberg indicates that these changes will move one through the journey "faster" than the changes one faces. In my opinion, this is placing the cart before the horse. Understanding the processes of traveling the path is the lesson within the journey. If one has walked the path but not learned its lessons, one will surely fail when faced with the potentially daunting issues that lie in everyday life and business. Consequently, Mr. Lemberg has put his theories AHEAD of the lessons. This is not the logical path, thus 4 stars instead of 5.

That said, Mr. Lemberg has many, many wonderful thoughts, theories, concepts and exercises. I believe wholeheartedly that most individuals can benefit from this book. Regardless whether one uses Mr. Lemberg's advice to the letter or molds a concept to fit a current issue, this book presents new ideas and solutions to old and ever-present problems.

Solid Questions and Assignments to Improve Your Focus
Review Summary: All of the material in this book is valuable, and for many people the workbook assignments here will represent the first time these issues have been formally addressed. As a result, most people will find themselves paying more attention to higher payoff areas and overcoming procrastination.

The book has two weaknesses. First, it treats almost all of the changes needed in order to make an enterprise more successful as ones related to attitude. Most businesses need more guidance for dealing with the actual business environment challenges they face if they are to make breakthroughs. Second, the title is misleading. This book will speed you up, but will not necessarily cause you to move faster than the changes you are dealing with in the external environment.

Review: Mr. Lemberg explains that this book is intended to be "a practical handbook, a detailed how-to book . . . ." You need to practice these many changes in order to be successful, and the book is designed to coach "you through the practice." As a result, a "strong purpose and clear intentions" should emerge.

Mr. Lemberg guarantees his book. If after reading and applying it you are not getting accelerated results, you can write to him and he will refund the price of the book. So the risk is all on his end!

The book contains 84 points with explanations. These are built around the concepts of Fast . . . Preparation, Thinking, Spirit, Talking, Direction, and Action. One of the book's strengths is that it helps you diagnose how well focused you are now, and where you need more attention before beginning to reshape your thinking. Faster Than the Speed of Change causes you to think about how to remove mental barriers, then establish your hierarchy of values, communicate more effectively with others, keep your focus, track your progress, and taking massive consistent action. The points are usually illustrated from fictional characters, such as the scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz.

The content of these points nicely match up with the source material in books like Think and Grow Rich, The Power of Positive Thinking, and Awaken the Giant Within. There are also some references to mainline business thinkers.

If you also need help with establishing a business strategy, you might want to read this book in conjunction with a book that focuses squarely on that subject such as Leading the Revolution.

While this book will probably help you speed your progress, I'm not sure that it will cause you to move faster than the changes in the external environment. In fact, if you don't expand the range of ideas that you are working on, the book may speed your implementation of the wrong ideas in many cases. As long as you quickly recover from when that bias to action leads you astray, that will not be fatal. But you will have lost ground over someone who is leading the innovation in your industry by having a better fix on what needs to be done.

After you have read this book and done the exercises in it, I suggest that you also take the time to think through your personal and spiritual life in the same dimensions. Otherwise, your focus on your career purposes will tend to crowd out your other reasons for being.

Capture more of the potential from life . . . in all of its dimensions!

This book was exciting.
This book was exiting because it's really hard for me to find a book that is interesting. When I started to read it it was not that exiting but when I got further in the book I realy started to like it.

Totally Awesome
"A Fate Totally Worse Than Death" is a horror parody about three high school Valley girls: Danielle, Brooke, and Tiffany. Their popularity status is threatened when Norwegian exchange student Helga comes to Cliffside High School and attracts all the boys in school--including the three girls' boyfriends.

The girls immediately let Helga know to stay away from their boyfriends--or else Helga will end up like Charity Chase, one unlucky girl who risked going after the guy Danielle was (and still is) interested in.

But Helga seems immune to their threats and tricks. In fact, when she defeats their hair-cutting ambush in the girls' bathroom, Danielle, Brooke, and Tiffany are certain Helga's luck is otherworldly. "She's a ghost," Danielle states. "The ghost of Charity Chase."

With this discovery, the three girls decide there's no other choice but to get rid of "Charity" once and for all. However, it's not easy for them since they've begun to age rapidly, a curse they believe "Charity" has bestowed on them as revenge.

"A Fate Totally Worse Than Death" is a fun and witty book to read, and the ending will probably surprise you. (At least I was surprised.) I would recommend this book to anyone who likes parodies or just wants to kill a few hours with a good teen horror book.

The book was supposed to be made into a movie last year, but from what I heard, it's not going to happen. So, it might still be done, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

The Best Book
I think this book is the best. I read it once and I want to read it again. I think its really interesting. I could never stop reading that book. It was so interesting I just kept on going and going. It has an awesome ending. I would never thought it would end that way. I can't belive they did that to the girl. Because she was going out with one of the "hun" boys. Good summer reading except for a cruise
An engaging retelling of the sinking of the USS Indianapolis at the end of WWII. Not exactly a page turner because of the plodding style, but it will keep your attention. Can be a little difficult to follow; I wish the author had provided some schematic drawings of the ship's layout, a map of the general area involved, and a table of the various naval hierachies involved. Some more sophisticated background on the physiology of thirst and exposure at sea would have added to the text. Nevertheless the description of men diving down to their sunken ship in the crazed hope of finding fresh water from its spigots is haunting.

A Very Good Book
The first I had ever heard of the USS Indianapolis was in the movie Jaws. Unfortunately my history classes in school did not cover this subject. Apparently they felt it was not a big enough part of World War II. But this was a tragedy full of mistakes by many. The ship was not noticed missing for days, it was sunk after the end of the war. The sailors faced certain death from dehydration or being eaten alive (sharks) and the Captain was court-martialled for following procedures.

This is an exceptional book that will keep your interest and enlighten you on a subject that many do not know about. I can not compare to other books on the subject as this is the first I have read. But it was well worth my time to read it.

Amazing story
QUICK REVIEW
This book gives a good and very thorough telling of the tragic sinking of a Navy ship, during WWII, and the events surrounding it. Worth reading.

FULL REVIEW
Among the many books that cover this incident, this is a very good one. The entire story is laid out nicely, from beginning to end. The author doesn't go into any part of the story extremely deeply, yet covers every aspect nicely. Readers may find themselves thirsting for more information in parts, if there is one particular part of the story they are most interested in. So the details of all that happens is not exhaustive (not as in depth as it possibly could be) but you get the whole story in exchange. Other books on this tragedy tend to dwell heavier on some aspects of the story than others, and therefore sacrifice telling all angles of the story. Readers, however, get the complete picture with this book. What they also get is an accurate, truthful account of the horror these men faced trying to get off a sinking ship, survive for days in the Pacific ocean and the struggle of life after such an terrifying event. The author does not make up dialogue or pretend to get inside the heads of the non-surviving men. He gives us direct quotes and true testimony. What the readers get is a fascinating true-life story of amazing survival under terrible circumstances. There are some slow parts but there is also riveting action and shocking incidents. This is an amazing story worth reading.

Intellectual Comfort
This is certainly a good story, a nice little fairy tale, that will undoubtedly persuade many that they now 'get' or 'understand' something of Lacanian theory and practice. But in this drive towards clarity and comprehension, are we not forgetting Lacan's warning that it is precisely when we think we understand that we most deceive ourselves? Is this book merely a particularly soothing mirage? More to the point: to what extent does the Professor's text differ from the 'imaginarisation' he attributes mainly to the defenses of the hysteric? Does this book ever truly take us past the realm of the imaginary? Prof. Verhaeghe claims his analysis is 'structural,' but exactly how? When does he ever take us truly into the TECHNICS, and not just the literary description, of symbolic structuration? When does this author ever consider how the three registers operate in his OWN discourse? How do we know that he has not presented us with a fantasy as defensive and fantastic as the pathological imagination of his objects of study? This book is certainly worth taking a look at, but it is also trapped in a logical paradox of which the author seems entirely unaware--or if he is, he ultimately blames it on the hysteric. These problems are intrinsic to the act of writing, however, and that position needs to be theorized and constructed in a much more rigorous way.

Lacan, Freud, Femininity, and the Problem of the Father
Does the Woman Exist? by Paul Verhaeghe is in my view one of the best available introductory works on Lacan and Freud. It is especially clear on the topic of femininity and the complicated problem of the father in Totem and Taboo.

Verhaeghe comes across as a caring teacher who is interested in sharing with others the fruit of his research, and his analytic acumen, in order to offer a step by step explanation of what was at stake for Freud as he struggled with the difficult question, "What does a woman want?" Not only does Verhaeghe make Freud's question our own, but he also takes the trouble to explain both how Lacan dealt with the Freud's question, as well as why Lacan had to change gears as new problems arose. It is true that in reading Verhaeghe's work one needs to leave at the door all prejudices and misconceptions about both Freud and Lacan, because for Verhaeghe neither ideology nor personal recognition are at the forefront of his preoccupations. I had been struggling for a long time with the writings of Lacan, and Verhaeghe is one of the few authors who actually addressed my concerns and my questions.

The best text on hysteria and the feminine world hitherto.
Gentlemen, I have read both the English and the Spanish edition of Verhaeghe's book, which has been very useful to me as an orientation for my clinical practice, as a psychoanalyst in my consultation-room and in during Liaison-psychoanalysis at the Hospital. The thorough clinical insight, the full assessment of the structure of hysteria and last but not least - the crystal-clear language, makes it an invaluable and indispensable tool, as well as a standard reference work. Not only I reccomend it highly: I cannot imagine anybody seriously trying to deal with hysteric patients without carefully studying this volume. A full review of the book may be found in the Journal Clinical Studies (Laura Szichman, ed.) New York, Vol. 4, No. 1, 1998, p.105-108 Roberto P. Neuburger, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Bradshaw Light
I thought this book just tread the same path as John Bradshaw (whom he quotes) with a few biblical examples thrown in. I didn't find anything in this book that I hadn't seen before.

Therapy from a Systems Perspective
Dr. David Stoop speaks in terms that may resonate with engineering-types.

He describes families in a systems approach using language such as "homeostasis", "action-reaction", and "non-linear systems".

As an example, we cannot react to a family problem/dysfunction in an "action-reaction" or "linear" manner. We must realize that each member plays a distinct role, essential for maintaining the homeostasis (i.e., thermostat) of the family system. Thus, each role must be examined prior to formulating a conclusion about the problem. He and James Masteller contribute many examples that support this hypothesis.

This book is essential if you are dealing with any type of emotional malady--depression, anxiety, anger, bitterness, stress, etc. Chances are likely that these maladies have found root through a family dysfunction that may have occurred years ago!

The workbook found in the book's epilogue is practical if one is *serious* about dealing with a dysfunction.

A path to healing
I always thought I was the one in the family who was *not* in denial - the one who called things as they saw them, but this book showed me that I too, had been in denial.

I'd hit parts of this book that were so upsetting or so revealing that I had to set the book aside for a time and think deeply about what I'd read.

And it relieved me of tons of guilt and shame I'd carried for years. Quite frankly, this book was an answer to prayer, but it took some wading through the mire and muck to get to the fresh, pure waters.

After reading one chapter and doing an exercise, I recalled a painful incident when a family friend harmed me and I told my father about it and he didn't even want to hear about it. My father accused me of being a liar.

Subsequently, I made some poor choices in life and I'd always kind of wondered how I'd wandered down that bad path. Stoop's book helped me connect some of the random looking dots and see what happened, why it happened, and why it is okay to forgive myself and forgive the others who let me down.

First and foremost, this is a book about healing. The very last chapter though, is rich. It's a section you'll want to read again and again.

Utterly Disappointing
This book was awful. It provided false information based on theory without any true research involved. For those wanting to learn about Dragons do NOT buy this book. It makes out dragons to be weak pee-brained animals throwing off the true powerful stature of the draconic kind. As I said for those interested in truly learning about Dragons go find sources elsewhere. I have studied dragons for many years and must say this book has to be one of the worst I read.

Pretty good
I wouldn't really recommend this book. It's great for historical references, but it's the kind of book that you read once, then put aside forever. That's what I did. If you really feel compelled to read it, try to get it out of the library.

This book rules!
I love this book. It helped me with my school speech and it made me realize what I wanted to do in my life. Study about dragons and other "fantasy" animals. I give this book a thumbs up!
