The turning point in the book is when after an exhaustive 8-10 hr meeting about sales units, how to change the corporate structure Cornyn got into this car to drive home and realized that during the whole 8 - 10 hr meeting, no one mentioned music. These guys were from the streets and got into the industry because of their passion for music.
The pace of the book is terrific, starts at the biginning of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Studio, builds up to the peak, then the reader is slowly let down when Cornyn starts talking numbers instead of artists.
It's a fun ride thru the "inside track"....enjoy!
It's a book I've been saying should be written for the last
ten years a book, a huge book, about possibly the hippest,
bravest, most nurturing record company rock'n'roll ever spawned. Now Stan Cornyn, a Warners "insider's insider" if ever there was one, has gone and done it with help from smart Rolling Stone vet Paul Scanlon.
"The really important factor was that we were a younger company than Columbia," Cornyn said when I interviewed him in 1993. "We weren't structured so tightly that we couldn't bend."
Bend Warner Brothers did or at least Warner Bros. and Reprise Records, under the inspiring helmsmanship of sometime Sinatra accountant Morris "Mo"Ostin and Boston disc-jock Joe Smith. For a golden half-decade, roughly 1967-1972, Warner-Reprise was the ultimate haven for the crème of the talent pouring out of (and into) the canyons of Southern California. Between 'em, Mo'n'Joe bagged the signatures of Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young,Randy Newman, Joni Mitchell, Ry Cooder, Fleetwood Mac, Van Morrison, James Taylor, Frank Zappa, Little Feat, Van Dyke Parks and on and on and on. Cornyn calls that "a spurt of prescience heretofore unknown in the record business". Frankly, it's hard to argue.
Warner-Reprise didn't do too badly either side of those halcyon five years, of course: from the Everlys to REM, Ostin and Smith green-lit signings that helped the WM Group shift gazillions of albums. But that heady turn-of-the-decade stretch, full of bold impulses and daring risks, is the guarantor of Warners' place in the history tomes.
It's also why Exploding is as much a lament a "They Don't Make 'Em Like That Anymore" about record execs as it is a racy, fact-packed narrative about company politicking. Like Cornyn, the Creative Services ace who conjured up mad as for the emerging underground press ("Win a Dream Date With the Fugs", "the Pigpen Lookalike Contest"), Mo'n'Joe 'n Lenny Waronker, and others like them cared deeply about talent. And the talent, generally, cared about them.
Don't get me wrong: Stan's yarn is first'n'foremost about players, workaholic Jews jockeying for position in worlds of fast deals and loaded stock options. Stan, a token Burbank goy, is as besotted by the greed and manoeuvring of the David Geffens and Bob Krasnows as he is by the talent-rich rosters of Warner-Reprise, Atlantic, Elektra and the other labels woven into the WM fold. Written in prose that's at once manic and
jovial and with both eyes on a Vanity Fair serialisation Exploding contains swathes of detail about money, sales, executive toilets and, above all, who reported to whom. If you want to read about Joni'n'James and all the other ladies'n'gents of the Canyon, you may be better off elsewhere.
If, on the other hand, you dig sweeping accounts of musical empires, and you loved Hit Men and The Mansion on the Hill, get your teeth into Cornyn, whose sardonically honest take on the vanity, megalomania and brilliance of the key dramatis personae from Ahmet Ertegun and Jac Holzman to Steve Ross and Seymour Stein is never less than entertaining and nearly always affectionate. ("There are the shrewd," he writes nicely, "and then there are the shrewder.")
Cornyn, retired for several years and living the sweet life in Santa Barbara, says he still talks to people at Warners. "Stan, it's just not like it was," they sigh to him. "Now it's just about money and covering your [rear]."
Once 'pon a time, it was about money, covering your [rear] and making astonishing music. Who's to say it couldn't still be?

That said, Mr. Lemberg has many, many wonderful thoughts, theories, concepts and exercises. I believe wholeheartedly that most individuals can benefit from this book. Regardless whether one uses Mr. Lemberg's advice to the letter or molds a concept to fit a current issue, this book presents new ideas and solutions to old and ever-present problems.
The book has two weaknesses. First, it treats almost all of the changes needed in order to make an enterprise more successful as ones related to attitude. Most businesses need more guidance for dealing with the actual business environment challenges they face if they are to make breakthroughs. Second, the title is misleading. This book will speed you up, but will not necessarily cause you to move faster than the changes you are dealing with in the external environment.
Review: Mr. Lemberg explains that this book is intended to be "a practical handbook, a detailed how-to book . . . ." You need to practice these many changes in order to be successful, and the book is designed to coach "you through the practice." As a result, a "strong purpose and clear intentions" should emerge.
Mr. Lemberg guarantees his book. If after reading and applying it you are not getting accelerated results, you can write to him and he will refund the price of the book. So the risk is all on his end!
The book contains 84 points with explanations. These are built around the concepts of Fast . . . Preparation, Thinking, Spirit, Talking, Direction, and Action. One of the book's strengths is that it helps you diagnose how well focused you are now, and where you need more attention before beginning to reshape your thinking. Faster Than the Speed of Change causes you to think about how to remove mental barriers, then establish your hierarchy of values, communicate more effectively with others, keep your focus, track your progress, and taking massive consistent action. The points are usually illustrated from fictional characters, such as the scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz.
The content of these points nicely match up with the source material in books like Think and Grow Rich, The Power of Positive Thinking, and Awaken the Giant Within. There are also some references to mainline business thinkers.
If you also need help with establishing a business strategy, you might want to read this book in conjunction with a book that focuses squarely on that subject such as Leading the Revolution.
While this book will probably help you speed your progress, I'm not sure that it will cause you to move faster than the changes in the external environment. In fact, if you don't expand the range of ideas that you are working on, the book may speed your implementation of the wrong ideas in many cases. As long as you quickly recover from when that bias to action leads you astray, that will not be fatal. But you will have lost ground over someone who is leading the innovation in your industry by having a better fix on what needs to be done.
After you have read this book and done the exercises in it, I suggest that you also take the time to think through your personal and spiritual life in the same dimensions. Otherwise, your focus on your career purposes will tend to crowd out your other reasons for being.
Capture more of the potential from life . . . in all of its dimensions!

The girls immediately let Helga know to stay away from their boyfriends--or else Helga will end up like Charity Chase, one unlucky girl who risked going after the guy Danielle was (and still is) interested in.
But Helga seems immune to their threats and tricks. In fact, when she defeats their hair-cutting ambush in the girls' bathroom, Danielle, Brooke, and Tiffany are certain Helga's luck is otherworldly. "She's a ghost," Danielle states. "The ghost of Charity Chase."
With this discovery, the three girls decide there's no other choice but to get rid of "Charity" once and for all. However, it's not easy for them since they've begun to age rapidly, a curse they believe "Charity" has bestowed on them as revenge.
"A Fate Totally Worse Than Death" is a fun and witty book to read, and the ending will probably surprise you. (At least I was surprised.) I would recommend this book to anyone who likes parodies or just wants to kill a few hours with a good teen horror book.
The book was supposed to be made into a movie last year, but from what I heard, it's not going to happen. So, it might still be done, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

This is an exceptional book that will keep your interest and enlighten you on a subject that many do not know about. I can not compare to other books on the subject as this is the first I have read. But it was well worth my time to read it.
This book gives a good and very thorough telling of the tragic sinking of a Navy ship, during WWII, and the events surrounding it. Worth reading.
FULL REVIEW
Among the many books that cover this incident, this is a very good one. The entire story is laid out nicely, from beginning to end. The author doesn't go into any part of the story extremely deeply, yet covers every aspect nicely. Readers may find themselves thirsting for more information in parts, if there is one particular part of the story they are most interested in. So the details of all that happens is not exhaustive (not as in depth as it possibly could be) but you get the whole story in exchange. Other books on this tragedy tend to dwell heavier on some aspects of the story than others, and therefore sacrifice telling all angles of the story. Readers, however, get the complete picture with this book. What they also get is an accurate, truthful account of the horror these men faced trying to get off a sinking ship, survive for days in the Pacific ocean and the struggle of life after such an terrifying event. The author does not make up dialogue or pretend to get inside the heads of the non-surviving men. He gives us direct quotes and true testimony. What the readers get is a fascinating true-life story of amazing survival under terrible circumstances. There are some slow parts but there is also riveting action and shocking incidents. This is an amazing story worth reading.

Verhaeghe comes across as a caring teacher who is interested in sharing with others the fruit of his research, and his analytic acumen, in order to offer a step by step explanation of what was at stake for Freud as he struggled with the difficult question, "What does a woman want?" Not only does Verhaeghe make Freud's question our own, but he also takes the trouble to explain both how Lacan dealt with the Freud's question, as well as why Lacan had to change gears as new problems arose. It is true that in reading Verhaeghe's work one needs to leave at the door all prejudices and misconceptions about both Freud and Lacan, because for Verhaeghe neither ideology nor personal recognition are at the forefront of his preoccupations. I had been struggling for a long time with the writings of Lacan, and Verhaeghe is one of the few authors who actually addressed my concerns and my questions.

He describes families in a systems approach using language such as "homeostasis", "action-reaction", and "non-linear systems".
As an example, we cannot react to a family problem/dysfunction in an "action-reaction" or "linear" manner. We must realize that each member plays a distinct role, essential for maintaining the homeostasis (i.e., thermostat) of the family system. Thus, each role must be examined prior to formulating a conclusion about the problem. He and James Masteller contribute many examples that support this hypothesis.
This book is essential if you are dealing with any type of emotional malady--depression, anxiety, anger, bitterness, stress, etc. Chances are likely that these maladies have found root through a family dysfunction that may have occurred years ago!
The workbook found in the book's epilogue is practical if one is *serious* about dealing with a dysfunction.
I'd hit parts of this book that were so upsetting or so revealing that I had to set the book aside for a time and think deeply about what I'd read.
And it relieved me of tons of guilt and shame I'd carried for years. Quite frankly, this book was an answer to prayer, but it took some wading through the mire and muck to get to the fresh, pure waters.
After reading one chapter and doing an exercise, I recalled a painful incident when a family friend harmed me and I told my father about it and he didn't even want to hear about it. My father accused me of being a liar.
Subsequently, I made some poor choices in life and I'd always kind of wondered how I'd wandered down that bad path. Stoop's book helped me connect some of the random looking dots and see what happened, why it happened, and why it is okay to forgive myself and forgive the others who let me down.
First and foremost, this is a book about healing. The very last chapter though, is rich. It's a section you'll want to read again and again.
