Country Life: A Handbook for Realists and Dreamers
Published in Hardcover by DK Publishing (April, 1998)
Author: Paul Heiney
Amazon base price: $24.95
Average review score:

You can farm on 5,000 sq feet of land!
Heiney began his farming life in central London, so he knows how to farm 5000 sq feet of land. This is far less than most would recognise as a farm, but he sees farming as a mindset. He tells how to farm on what you have, whether it be 5000 ft, 1/2 acre, 3 acres or 8+ acres. His background is British, so he comes at this with a unique viewpoint (at least as far as this Yank can see). He has a great supply of things we've forgotten on this side of the pond- how to build a living fence that will not rot and needs no painting (i.e. laying a hedge), how to assure yourself of a never ending supply of beanpoles (i.e. coppicing), and many other universals that we have forgotten. Do not think this is only a book for the British. He directs his comments to those around the world who share a desire to farm. For example, he tells how to plan and grow both northern and southern orchards. What crops do well with water and those that need less. Among the things I found fascinating were his analysis of how much land I'd need to grow an annual supply of wheat for my family (far less than you'd guess). Do you know what animals you can keep if you have only a half acre? Great photos, good writing, and a wealth of practical information make this one to buy, keep, and reread.

Inspiring
This book made me want to up and leave the city right now and go buy a farm! :-) We have a dream of someday owning a small farm, and this book simply reinforced that desire. The information was a good, basic overview of what is involved, and well-illustrated. Definitely worth the money!

It makes dreamers want to be doers.
This is one of the best "back to land" books I've ever read. The pictures are just beautiful. The information is priceless. Even if all you are able to do is dream, it is still worth it. It will inspire and teach.

Covered Call Writing With Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs)

A MOST TIMELY AND PROFITABLE BOOK
I am new to covered call writing, but have found this book to be my solution to the stock market doldrums. I liquidated my poorly performing mutual funds and have purchased ETFs with the help of the information provided in this book. I then started writing covered calls on them. So far my results easily substantiate the book's claim that double-digit returns are there to be had using this strategy. For the first time in several years I have some hope of recovering my losses.

A real side benefit for me is that the income I get from covered call writing is tax free. I'm using my past mutual fund losses to offset the nice gains I'm realizing from writing covered calls!

I'd highly recommend this book to anyone, but particularly smaller investors who can't get broad divesification through individual stock ownership. The strategy is also excellent for those who have losses. As in my case, you should be able to use those past losses to offset the gains from your call writing so that no taxes have to be paid.

THIS BOOK IS AHEAD OF ITS TIME
The use of Exchange Traded Funds is rapidly replacing mutual funds as the investment of choice for stock investors. Yet, even so, with the long-term prospect of stock prices growing much more slowly than in the past, new ideas are needed to achieve acceptable returns. "Covered Call Writing With Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs)" offers a turnkey solution for double-digit investment results. Its "how to" program provides what in my view is an optimum situation...diversification through the use of ETFs and increased returns through covered call writing. Since covered call writing can't be done on mutual funds, ETFs are becoming the logical choice for investors because of this and for many other reasons described in the book. The ability to write covered calls on ETFs just adds frosting to the cake. As investors experience only slow growth in their stock portfolios over the coming years, as I believe they will, this book, and a similar book for individual stocks, "Covered Call Writing Demystified," should find a growing audience.

Excellent Investment Strategy
"Covered Call Writing with Exchange Traded Funds" is an excellent book to help you get started using covered call writing as an investment strategy. It is easy to read, straightforward, and comprehensive. The book provides all the information necessary to utilize your capital to earn higher returns than the current martket otherwise provides. The program Mr. Kadavy describes has the multiple advantages of providing downside protection in a flat or declining market like we have experienced in 2001 & 2002, while still giving you the potential to earn double digit returns. I have been writing covered calls for about 8 months and it has been more sucessful than anything else I have done in the stock market in the last 5 years. Using ETF's gives you a broad diversification which mitigates risk in the equities market. The decision to invest in the stock market is one each of us must make for ourselves. But if you decide to be in the market, covered call writing, done properly, reduces risk and increases returns. Mr Kadavy's book prepares you to do it right.

Superb
I'm the author of Thinkertoys (A Handbook of Business Creativity) and Cracking Creativity (The Secrets of Creative Genius). I, generally read, every book about creative thinking on the market. This book is superb and is one of the most comprehensive on the market. I highly recommend it.

At last! Creatvity is approachable to "left brainers"
Many books on the subject of creativity are loaded with exercises that may feel silly to most folks. Rather than have readers stand on their heads or play odd word games, Plsek's approach to creativity is logical and scientifically founded. In addition to being a great approach to the theory and practice of generating creative ideas, the book also opens the door to learnings from cognitive sciences. Smart, illuminating and highly readable.

You will read this book many times
The book practically wholly covers subjects mentioned in the title such as they were developed in the Western countries, has good bibliography and well-written. Author use psychological-based approach that allows him to mix successfully different methods of creativity. Unfortunately, he is not very critical to the results (as well as many others in this field), so a reader could still doubt about effectiveness of proposed methods. Nevertheless it is a good book, I'd strongly recommend to read. Semyon D. Savransky, Ph. D.

Laugh & Cry, Well expressed book!
Emmanuelle Laborit writes her autobiography with such expressive detail. Some parts were hard to believe what the deaf have to go through to let themselves be heard for others. I recommend this book for any parent of a deaf child. What choices they have to make in the education of their child. There are so many different choices. Emmanuelle expains how her education was, she did nearly everything. When she started to learn sign language the world became more understanding to her.

accurate portrayal of one who is "not hearing"
Author recounts troubles of a person born deaf in france, compounded by the fact that sign language was outlawed there as "too sensual" until 1979. It's also a beautifully written book which captures the softness and gentle love of words often found in many english-as-a-second-language authors {except, for her, english is a third language!}.

I lost all my hearing suddenly in 1999. The whole world runs like a silent movie. I am excluded and don't understand what is going on around me anymore. This book offers insight, direction, hope. Maybe it will make people more sensitive to the cruel isolation of deafness.

If you want to laugh, cry, and educate yourself...
This book caught my eye, because I really only read non-fiction. My interest in human development has been encouraged by my rather stilted childhood. This book is written with such candidness, that you are literally enveloped. I have laughed out loud, shed some tears, and loved every moment.

Reading my moms books
I was born in 1955. I read this book as a teenager and it was tremendously exciting. I read the book again as an adult with children and again I fell in love with it. It has the same mastery of writeing, as To Kill a Mockingbird. It isn't the same type of story. But the scare is timeless.

The story is about a young woman who is a lone in the world without family. She is bright and intelligent and without any prospects for a family of her own. She meets a man with a charming child. He offers her a job takeing care of the boy while he pursues infomation on his long missing wife. During which time she poses as his wife. A long forgotten scandal is involved along with several tense moments as murder is uncovered and the suspicion that the man is involved in the unsolved deaths. Really great with a lot of suspense.

A classic mystery
If you've ever been to any of the old-time lake cabins in Minnesota, you'll feel like your there again when you read this classic 1940's mystery. The characters are perfect, and the setting, right down to the dirt and gravel paths to the lake, is so real you can almost see it. All Seeley's books have a real distinct 40's feel to them, so if you enjoy that, I'd say they're well worth your time.

A terrific mystery!
A well-written mystery with many a twist in the plot. The characters are interesting and the book keeps you guessing until the very end.

Beautiful reference book
Important background information on these lovely historic glass houses is matched with lovely photos. It would make an excellent book for planning travel to any of the cities where these conservatories are located. Well known properties are listed as well as ones less famous. This book is a "must" if you are a lover of gardens and plants.

excellent
This book contains beautiful photographs and is very well written. Ms.Cunningham has done a wonderful job.

A Beautifully Prepared View of Glass Houses
Gardeners, Horticulturists , or anyone else will enjoy the beauty of this book. What struck me was the beautiful preparation and the reproduction of the Photos. The color and architectural features leap off the pages.

The history of the development of Conservatories adds an extra dimension - and of course nearly every large city has one, open for visiting now !

A great read, and a terrific gift for anyone.

A life saver
This is a handy little book that fits into a lab coat pocket. It keeps the treatment modalities for most common situaitons at your fingertips, and also has templates for how to write an admission note, how to write a discharge summary, how to write a delivery note, common dosages of common meds, etc. This is wonderful for midwifery students, residents, and PA students who are just learning the proper format for charting and need to double-check drug dosages and what to do next if the pap test comes back LSIL.

Great Pocket Book
I carried this in my back pocket for my 2 months of L&D as an FP Intern, and found the information invaluable. Gives all the essential information and treatment guidelines you need, in a size that is easy to keep on hand. Highly recommend.

A treasure of Hockney illustrations & information
If you want a better understanding of David Hockney buy this book. It is a wonderful display of illustrations and information of a great British artist.

"David Hockney: Paintings" is well written and organized to foster a greater understanding of how Hockney evolves over the course of his career. Moreover, you will be impressed by the outstanding quality of the the black & white and color illustrations.

Authors Paul Melia and Ulrich Luckhardt provide the reader an excellent insight to the artistic thoughts of David Hockney. It also studies and explains the tremendous global popularity of the artist. This is a great book to have in the house.

A Fan's Book
Being a tremendous fan of Hockney's work, I was delighted to find this beautiful and informative book.

I liked the chronological organization as the book traced the artist's development over the years. I always find this such an interesting perspective, seeing how an artist's vision changes and evolves. And I also liked the way that the relationship between Hockney's life and his art is explored.

The illustrations were grand too!

A worthwhile book and a good study of Hockney, his life, and his works.

What a bargain price for such a wonderful book
I was more than pleasantly surprised by the extremely high quality of the reproductions. The book is split up in six chapters covering the main artistic phases in Hockney's live and giving a lot of information about his paintings.
I find it extremely interesting not just to see Hockney's work but also to read the details on the creative process leading up to the finished painting. A wonderful book!

"Davy" brings back my dreamlike days in the San Juan Islands
While this is an inspiring story to encourage kids to "follow their dreams," what attracts me back to this book are the illustrations.

As a native of Washington State, I spent my youth attending summer camp on Orcas Island, in the San Juan Islands, near the Canadian border. While at camp, we sometimes experienced "Killer Whale" sightings, which the counselors used to enjoy frightening us with.

We spent many lazy days on the beach, or boating to neighboring islands, where we would campout, hike, go clamming and crabbing on the beach or build rafts. Although we didn't spend any time in a sailboat at camp, I spent a good deal of time sailing with my older brother on Lake Washington during those carefree days of summer.

Paul Owen Lewis' paintings in "Davy's Dream," with the predominance of greens and blues, contrasted against the black and white of the orcas, vividly captures the essence of the San Juan Islands and the dreamlike state one can experience in this breathtaking environment. To his credit, Lewis lets his pictures tell Davy's dream for several pages, without the help of words.

I guess I just want to say that this book rings true to my experiences as a youth in the Pacific Northwest.

Whenever I read this book aloud to students in my elementary school library, they always listen with awe and then line up to check it out.

Encourages kids to believe in their dreams
Davy's Dream, written by my brother, Paul Owen Lewis, has inspired many school children over the years. It takes Davy on a journey of believing in what he knows to be true, in spite of the nay-sayers in his life. Your children will love the illustrations and even notice Paul's cat, Guenivere on every page! Your whole family will enjoy the amazing things that happen to Davy and especially if you are Keiko fans. Enjoy!

Dreams come true for a young sailor
Davy dares to pursue his dream of sailing among the orca. He turns a deaf ear to pessimistic adults and sets out. But -- his dream is illusive and avoids him. A quick "refit" and he makes contact with the whales. Well drawn / illustrated, a story from and for the heart. [ I had the privilege of hearing the author tell about making the book -- his first -- to an audience of elementary school students. ] A great story of inspiration, better than the Little Engine that Could's "I think I can" -- this one says "I'll go do it!"
