wisdom mired in guck
This unfortunately seems to be the only English edition of this classic that is available. "Unfortunately", because the translator has indulged in putting sections of the text into a horrible singsong archaic rhyme form. Here's a random selection: "How eluding and vague/ All types including!/How vague and eluding,/All beings including!/How deep and how obscure./ It harbors the spirit pure,/Whose truth is ever sure,/ Whose faith abides for aye/ From of yore until to-day." If you can tolerate this, there are some stunning thoughts here - but that's a big if.

Is there a point?
I have read Mr. West's qualifications and indeed, he is a very qualified and very literate author. However, this is a bizarrely awful book. Maybe something happens in it and maybe there's a plot somewhere, but I couldn't find it. It reminded me of one of those stream of consciousness books (a style I detest)crossed with some strange form of science fiction. It just didn't make any sense. I couldn't finish it-just read about 50 pages in the beginning & skimmed a few in the middle and at the end. This was a library copy, so I had no fiscal outlay and am very glad of that. I gave it two stars because of Mr West's knowledge of the period and obvious literacy (otherwise, a negative if there was one), but don't waste your time.

A thoughtless plot
Citadel Run is a book that seemed as if it should have been part of a series of books and this book would have been the ending of the series. The main character is retiring and taking a last jab at having some fun while breaking the rules. There are plenty of characters in this book that would have been good recurring characters from other books in the series but since this wasn't a part of a series you don't really care about them. Paul Bishop also has the annoying habit of having to go into great detail of a single character. First you meet the character. Then you get their past history, the low down on their personal life, and what they look like. It gets very tiresome at awhile. The first part of the book is pretty good though. It's about a boy setting buildings on fire. That would have been a good central plot to use for the whole book but the author had to add in the useless "last ride" story that added nothing to the book. Citadel Run is a boring, tedious, thoughtless book that reads as if it's 500 pages instead of 300. 2 Stars

The book is in different keys than the recordings.
I bought this book and was excited about being able to take it right home and play along to the Beatles recordings on my guitar. I opened up to "I Saw Her Standing There" and put on my Please Please Me CD and to my surprise and dismay the book was in a different musical key than the CD, way off! I'm assuming they did that to make the songs easier to play on piano, but it wasn't what I wanted. Disappointed I took the book back and then ordered The Complete Beatles Scores from Amazon. I've been much happier with that book.

Conflicting Readings: Variety and Validity in Interpretation
Published in Paperback by Univ of North Carolina Pr (January, 1990)
Author: Paul B. Armstrong
Amazon base price: $14.95
Average review score:

A chore to read
This book contains some very valuable insights toward interpreting various books. Unfortunately, these insights are all presented in the first chapter, and are subsequently beat into the reader's head repeatedly afterwards. The author pulls out every obscure, thirty-letter vocabulary word you can find in Webster's, and some that I couldn't. The most useful part of the book is the Prologue. The Prologue is extremely well-written, and sums up Armstrong's entire argument in about ten pages. I would suggest that potential readers read the Prologue first, skip the Introduction altogether, and take the rest of the book as they may.

almost useless
Looking to keep yourself and your family safe from crime? If so then this book is NOT for you. Don Paul, a former green beret and cop attempts to teach the reader how to stay safe from crime in this slim paperback. His main point in the book is that you should attempt to prevent crime before it occurs. (Crimes covered in this book range from rape to identity theft.) The suggestions offered in this book are often extreme, and only useful for people who are especially at risk. Some suggestions include using only a P.O. box address and an alias for all of your communications through the mail, home schooling your children, and installing a shotgun that you can shoot remotely in your home. The book is filled with bizzare and useless diagrams, and often contains the authors Christian messages. The book does help however in making the reader more able to identify threats, but does not do well in explaining how to deal with them. While I cannot recommend this book because of its lack of good information, I have benefited from it slightly by learning about how criminals operate and potentional ways to stay out of trouble.

The Crow, Book 1: Vengeance

The Crow
The Crow: Vengeance collects issues 1 - 3, 5 and 6 of Todd McFarlane's Crow comic series. It follows Eric Draven, star of the original graphic novel and film, through his revenge and then further.

Jon J Muth does a great job of writing this, and the artists, Jamie Tolagston and Paul Lee, also have talent. Unfortunately, the idea behind the series was not so good, and eventually the series was cancelled, after issue 10.

Book, II, "Evil Beyond Reach", is also available now.

McFarlane's foray into the world of The Crow
This book collects issues 7 - 10 and 4 of Todd McFarlane's short-lived Crow series. McFarlane bought the rights to the Crow, but the comic was cancelled after issue 10, because nobody really liked it. Jon J Muth does have a writing talent, unfortunately somebody made the mistake of trying to continue Eric Draven's story, rather than beginning anew.

If you decide to buy this book, do so only for the art, and not for the storyline. It's a shame, considering the vast talents McFarlane has at his disposal
