nb! translation of 1994 Spanish original
This is not really a "1999" book, in case anyone is looking for the latest from Castells--rather it offers a translation of a collection of essays published in Spanish five years ago (and written a year or two before that, judging from the references). One would think this information should be part of the bibliographic description of the title.

A collection of 1993-94 essays without thematic unity.
This is a collection of interesting, but largely unrelated, papers from a conference in Barcelona in 1994, which do not present a coherent analysis, and only marginally treat education in relationship to information technology. The title is misleading, and Castells is not the editor, but simply one of the contributors, writing on a topic alien to education. The reader from Atlanta writing a review on this site is absolutely right. Do not expect a book. Some of the articles, particularly the one by Freire, could be of your interest.

Dolley Madison (Presidential Wives Sereis)
Published in Hardcover by Nova Science Publishers, Inc. (November, 2001)
Author: Paul M. Zall
Amazon base price: $44.00
Used price: $27.56
Average review score:

Error-ridden
This short, poorly edited text contributes little to understanding Dolley Madison's life or times. Not only is the text riddled with typos, but it presents an overly-simplistic and at times distorting view of Dolley. Zall continually refers to Dolley as a "mother" to those around her, attributing her actions to her gender rather than to her individual choices in unique circumstances. This book clearly aims at elementary school students, but it should be used with caution, as its focus on Dolley mothering both to her son Payne and to those around her distracts from her other activities.

In Defense of the Editor...
I happen to be aquainted with the author and in defense of this much respected author, I must let the readers know that this was not a finished work when published. The project was poorly handled by the publisher, and was printed from a rough draft. Modern writers, beware with whom you enter into pacts...

The Kingdom by the Sea: His Candid and Compulsive Account of a Journey Round the Coast of Great Britain
Published in Audio Cassette by Penguin Audiobooks (June, 1997)
Authors: Paul Theroux and William Hootkins
Amazon base price: $16.95
Used price: $7.75
Average review score:

Fine writer gets trapped in bad plan
Theroux's interesting but illstarred plan was to meet the English by travelling around the coast, on foot and by train. Real English, real conversations. He was twenty years too late. About a month into this disaster it's becoming obvious that even the lower middle class have abandoned the gray, chilly English coastal towns for cheap jumbo jets to sunny climes. The old resorts have become God's Waiting Room and battlegrounds for the skinhead urban poor. Chapters go by without him seeing a child, or a real family, only potty old people who hate foreigners. These aren't "the English." Poor Theroux. Read his fine book on China instead.

A Kingdom Not Entered.
I found "The Kingdom by the Sea", read by William Hootkins, snooty and offensive. Its picture of the British is projected right out of the jerkish Theroux's psyche, and does not represent the way one sees a country if one wishes to UNDERSTAND it, which is to see it as it is through the frame of mind of the inhabitants, and with transcendent human sympathy and a great deal of imagination. One goes to another country, first of all, to learn something about ONESELF.

Britain is a country to love, not to hate. Having lived there a year, in 1977-8, it still has my heart, and my embarrassed admiration as an American.

This is the second Theroux audiobook I have found a failure, the first being his book on Latin America.

Teach Yourself Access 2 in 14 Days
Published in Paperback by Sams (May, 1994)

Useless for the beginner
Appendix E mentions a file TYA14.exe allegedly to be found on typing go sams and then searching Library $, databases. A beginners is supposed to work all this out at a glance! And spend time and money hunting for and downloading the mysterious file.

Some pieces are missing.
This book is fine to begin with, but it gives the appearance that the original title was "Teach Yourself Access In 21 Days". For example, everything is cruising right along very smoothly when, suddenly, additional tables are part of the database. Data for filling the tables are supplied in the appendix; however, no reference for linking or establishing keys is provided. This seems to me to be a serious shortcoming for a purportedly beginner's book. With some additional text filling gaps like these, the book would be very good, as what IS in the book is explained quite well. As it is, a reader needs some outside assistance to complete the projects; i.e., you cannot truly "Teach Yourself" using this book alone

Never let a friend or family member near this book
This book started out looking very promising. It appeared as if it would answer the need for a good book for friends and family members. However, as I continued to read, I became very upset, as there was a distinct intimation that there is a strong psychological etiology to FMS, and that if the patient would just get on with life, everything would be fine. I refused to place a copy of it in our support group library. I felt betrayed by it's attitude.

Don't waste your money
If you are looking for a book to explain Fibromyalgia to yourfamily and friends please don't look for it here. There are a fewpages that make mention of Fibromyalgia. The rest of the 55 pages here are filled with information that you can get from a any self help book. For instance: "Using I messages is effective, because" etc. Page 33. I sure don't intend to waste the time of my family and friends by suggesting they read it. Your family and friends who are interested in helping you would be better served to send or call for the information provided free from the National Arthritis Foundation.

Orchids of North America
The book serves as good checklist for the North American species. It should not be construed as anything more than that. The photos are subpar.

Disappointed
I have been awaiting the publication of this book for several months after I discovered it was forthcoming. If you are looking for a checklist of wild orchids with sharp color pictures then this is for you. For myself it lacked detailed information of the various orchids. This is likely not possible or the book would be too large to easily carry with you into the field. My suggestion is find an orchid book for your region that can concentrate on the local varieties. In my area of the Midwest, I would suggest "Orchids of the Western Great Lakes Region" by Frederick W. Case, Jr. That book is an older book but contains some very useful information.

Drudgery
I wouldn't give the book even one star, if there were a "no stars" category. Reading it is sheer drudgery. I'm a quick reader and very fond of true crime, so plowing through it for two weeks was quite unusual and quite unsatisfying. There are few facts - instead, lots of "if", "maybe", "perhaps", and "might" - the author has built an air castle on his own conjecture. Finally I just checked the back of the book for the verdict (normally verboten) and threw it away. What a total waste of money and time! I'm going to be allergic to the name Carlton Smith from now on. Too bad he shares the first name of a good true-crime writer!

Drudgery
Working at this book was sheer drudgery. I'm a quick reader, and I love true crime, so taking two weeks to plow through the first half of the book was most unusual. Most frustrating, too. Finally, I gave up, checked the back of the book for the verdict (normally verboten) and just threw it away. The author built an air castle on conjecture. "If", "maybe", "perhaps", "possibly", are the main words. There's hardly a sentence without one of these, and a notable scarcity of facts and evidence. It was a big waste of money and time, and I'm going to be pretty allergic to the name Carlton Smith from now on! (Too bad he shares a first name with another true crime author who's consistently good!) Yuk.

Too much legal stuff
True crime is tough to write about, but filling page after page after page ... with complicated legal wranglings and accounting practices that no one but an accountant could understand or even care about takes this book from about 10 pages of interesting information about the lives of these people to however many it ended up being. Sorry, I ramble.

Utter rubbish
Like anyone cares what the author thinks. Utter [bunk.] You can at least read the real stories behind the songs [online].

Avoid Even If You're A Die-Hard Fan
I have to agree wholeheartedly with the reviewer that said the only worthwhile part of this book are the interviews, but that's not saying much. I bought this book thinking I would get, as advertised, "the stories behind the songs". Not only is this completely false, but I'm not sure the author knows anything about KISS at all. All he did was listen to the song lyrics, regurgitate them back with some loose interpretation of what they're supposed to mean, and that's your story behind the song. No other insight, research, or nothing. If you want a good insightful look at KISS, I highly recommend "KISS Alive Forever: A Touring History". Don't waste your money on this ..., even if you're a diehard fan.

well.....
The stories behind the songs? Not really. It's really a book about what a handful of musicians THOUGHT about Kiss songs. I have it. It is a must for Kiss fans. The interviews are pretty standard Kiss fare - nothing really new. But if you're like me - and you collect every 'slick' book published about the band, you sort of have to get it. Better options are available - "Kiss: the Early Years" and "The Complete Touring History"

Frustration
This is a truly horrible book. It's written so poorly that the only way it can be used is as a look-up reference. If you don't have a really good instructor for Not-for-profit accounting, find one using a different book. You won't get much out of this.
The 7th Edition is just as bad as the 6th.

Worst Text I ever had to read
If it was possible to give this book a negetive star review I would. It has no organization, no structure, and makes no sense. It is by far the worst text I have ever had to read. Although the author is a professor, he must be a very bad one. He has no grasp on how students learn, and makes no attempt to link information together. He uses the same example throughout the entire text. As if in chapter 9, you rememeber what entry 14, is in chapter 3. A horrible book. It is easier to read the GASB statements than it is this book. DO NOT BUY IT!!

WARNING! Reading this book may cause extreme drowsiness.
WARNING! This book may cause drowsiness. Do not attempt to operate heavy machinery after reading this book.

It's too bad the author has absolutely no literary skills whatsoever. I'm no great author myself but you'd think by the time they got to the fifth edition all the errors would be gone and they would have improved upon the existing text. I guess the editors must have let this one slip through without actually reading what they were going to be publishing.

If you are unfortunate enough to have to buy this book then you will be dumber for having read it and may God have mercy on your soul.

What's wrong with K-State?
I don't understand why this guy doesn't like K-State at all. I am only a Junior in High School, but I hope to go to K-State once I graduate. I've only heard good things about the school, and they're ranked, I think, 7th in the U.S. with Yale, Harvard, Stanton, etc. I plan on being a Wildcat some day, and I sure didn't like what this guy had to say about them.

Where are the negative numbers for this rating???!!!!!!
You've got to be kidding me! Who in their right mind would pay to have this book written. The author should go back to the writing style to which he is best suited: marquees of fast food restaraunts! What a bad concept. Save your money, don't buy this book. If you feel the need to waste money, buy a ticket to a KU football game. Now there's quality entertainment! Plenty of elbow room in those stands to enjoy your Chalupa!

303 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Buy This Book
I can't imagine why anyone in their right mind would write a book like this unless they flunked out of Kansas State or are sickeningly addicted to the University of Kansas. I highly recommend Kansas State University (I am an Alumnus), and I suggest that you avoid this book.
