What a find! This is without a doubt required reading for anyone who longs for baseball "the way it used to be." Funny and entertaining, sometimes mysterious and dramatic.

Donald Graves' poetry book, "Baseball, Snakes, and Summer Squash" recants the follies and joys about growing up. While simple in thier construction, the poems express adequately all the dimensions of being a kid; from school to hating squash. Graves claims he wrote some of the poems specifically for boys to identify with, but don't be fooled, this gem is applicable to all. VERY usuable in the classroom and with children - a must read.

A true delight! Arranged alphabetically by person. This collection of baseball quotations is utterly comprehensive; it's doubtful there's anything that you'll find to be missing here. If you want to see all the "Berraisms," they're here. Stengelese? Likewise. I put the book to the test by looking up all kinds of quotes. For example: I remember when Reggie was bragging about his 160 IQ and Mickey Rivers said, "Out of what, a thousand?" And, sure enough, that quote is in here. I did stump the book a couple of times, but I had to try awfully hard. If there is any criticism of the book, it would be that it's TOO comprehensive, to the point that some of the quotes arguably aren't worth having been included; but, when it comes to this kind of thing, better too much than not enough.
Besides the expected baseball personalities, you'll find interesting quotes also from surprising sources like Philip Roth, Senator Eugene McCarthy -- and Dagwood.

This is no longer the most current edition of this text book. The Gleitman text is definitive, comprehensive, a classic. Gleitman is now over 70, and writes from extensive and broad experience in many areas of psychology. His wife is Lila Gleitman, one of the foremost living linguists in America, after Chomsky.

Henry Gleitman is a true humanist in the traditional sense. He writes with a deep sense of humanity. Within the field of psychology, he is rekowned for his teaching of intro psychology courses at Univ of Pennsylvania. When you read Gleitman's text, you get a great introduction to psychology from a true scholar who has stood at the forefront of his field for decades. His survey is taken from close personal acquaintence with many of the history-makers whose research is discussed in his book.

If you are assigning an intro psych text, this is the one. If you are taking an intro psych class, with this text, bother to do the reading.

This book is a must have for all math students (and their parents!). It covers the basic math concepts in a very complete and understandable way. I highly recommend it for any family with school age children.

A great follow-up book to the Ecology of Bats. A must for any bat biologist who is serious about their work. I cannot wait until Dr. Kunz publishes a work on Bats of the United States with color photo plates.

This is a very comprehensive review of the Battle of Britain, the campaign which saved Europe from an indefinite period of darkness, oppression, and inhumanity. Without the courage and resilience of the British people and the courage, competence, and sacrifice of the young pilots and crews of the RAF from whom so much was demanded Hitler's legions would have stood triumphant over a defeated Europe. The level of detail about the technological and tactical development of aerial combat and strategic bombing from WWI to WWII, including radar, propellers, engines, gasoline, machine guns, gunsights, will attract aviation 'wonks' and the address of the broader political imperatives which led to war will attract the historian and political scientist. Mr. Jacobs' unbelievable sketches throughout add very helpful imagery of the aircraft which fought the campaign. I was intrigued, too, by the description of the influence of American aviation developments in the building of the German and British airfleets. I wish, though, the authors had addressed in more detail the effect of the early British breaking of German communication codes. A good read!
