The rise and fall of Alan Bond

Great Story of Australia's Greatest Corporate Fraud
In the film "Wall Street" Gordon Gekko said "Greed is good, greed is right. Greed works!"

Gordon Gekko is unfit to tie the sandals of Alan Bond.

Bond built a $5Billion empire in Australia in the 1980's, starting in 1983 when he won the America's Cup. By the end of the 1990's he was bankrupt with millions of dollars hidden offshore in places that don't like to co-operate with bankrupcy trustees.

Bond performed a miracle - he lost money selling beer to Australians.

Paul Barry writes a rollicking yarn of a scoundrel of the highest order. A must read for the greedy or those who like to watch the greedy get away with it.

Especially for students of Chinese philosophy
Rituals Of The Way: The Philosophy Of Xunzi by Paul Rakita Goldin (Assistant Professor of Chinese Thought, University of Pennsylvania) is an original study of Chinese philosophy in general, and Confucian dilemmas, as addressed by classic Xunzi text, attributed to and named after the philosopher Xun Kuang (ca. 310-ca. 210 B.C.), in particular. Individual chapters look at what the wisdom of this ancient text offers concerning self-cultivation, the mind, the nature of Heaven, ritual and music, language and "The Way". Numerous excerpts, presented both in the original Chinese and in English translation, are quoted in this interpretational work which deeply profound and highly recommended, especially for students of Chinese philosophy.

I first read Journey of the Magi, I picked the book up at the library. I was totally shocked at the content, but nonetheless hooked. So much so that I went on the Net to track down the author to see if he had written other books. At first I wondered if he was arrogant, then I saw the true scholary intelligence of the writer. This is a brilliant man. A realist. If you wish to read something educational and so funny that I actually laugh out loud, this is the writer for you. I also felt that no matter his circumstances, he truly is a good compassionate man. I first read The journey of the Magi in January, I have since gone on to read all five of his books and I am a lifer. A brilliant read.

Informative guide to politics.
I read this book in 1989 while a high-school student. It was one of the first political books I'd read. Some of the issues are out of date (like do we increase the defense budget 2-3 percent or 7-8 percent over inflation), but I learned much about the basics of politics from the late Senator's book. He also made a case for a large foreign-aid budget. Tsongas has a clear, readable, persuasive style. I'm no liberal, but I think Tsongas had a vision for this country beyond the latest polls and would have been a good leader. Thanks Paul and God bless you...

A Wonderful Book -- A Wonderful Adventure
This is a wonderful book. There is an adventure with every page turn and the descriptions are deliciously vivid. I always look for books that will "take me away," and at the same time, teach me something new. The Road To El Cielo took me to Mexico's cloud forests and inspired in me a new appreciation for its wildlife, plant life, and way of life. Highly Recommended.

The storm before the calm.
This is the first of the "Devil's Tower" trilogy of adventures, which is definitely not for starting characters. If the members of your Posse don't have at least 3 Grit apiece, you might want to run them through a few other adventures first. One of the things that's attracted me to the Deadlands games is the meta-story running through them. Like some of the better season premieres of "The X-Files," the Devil's Tower arc gives the Posse a BIT more of The Truth, but creates just as many questions as it answers. As someone who got into the game via "Hell on Earth," I appreciate the background for it that this adventure forms. Here, the players really make a difference in the world of the Weird West. Succeed, and all goes well. Fail, and the Hell on Earth timeline is created.

Robert Graves: Collected Writings on Poetry

Essential Reading
I'd give this ten out of five if I could. I know that"essential reading" is a much overused phrase, but anyone interested in poetry should read this. Graves was his own "Movement" and his own "School". No one wrote poetry like he did, and no one wrote and thought about poetry quite the same way either. In the essays collected here he could be wilful, pig-headed and cantankerous. He is never less than thought provoking and often very funny. At times his insistance that the Poet MUST be this or MUST do that can grate... (Like Eliot and many others when he's talking about "The Poet" he's talking about himself) but even when you're disagreeing with him most violently or feel the need to say "Stop, wait, that can't be right" ... what he says is worth thinking about. Although his knowledge of his subject was as profound as any scholars, he insisted on filtering that knowledge through his personal experience as practising poet. And that's what makes this so fascinating and so valuable. He doesn't pretend to to be objective. But he stands by his own standards, which he makes explicit, and applies them ruthlessly. If you write poetry, there's a lot to learn here about writing. (Graves was one of the great revisers and on several occasions he walks his audience through the process). If you teach poetry, there's a lot to think about. "Legitimate criticism of poetry" is worth the price of admission. And if you are interested in the problems of translating poetry his flattening of Pound and his defence of his own translation of the Rubaiyyat (Which was hammered by the critics If memory serves)are both worth reading.
If you are the type of modern reader who gets indignant with a writer who does not say what you think they should, don't bother. Graves never said what people wanted to hear, only what he felt he had to say.

Welcome to Sherwood! (and Barnsdale)
Do you know need a reason to buy this book? I can give you an excellent one -- it's called the Table of Contents. It lists 700 pages worth of Robin Hood ballads, plays and more. It has the earliest ballads and plays where Robin is merely a yeoman, the first play that casts him as the Earl of Huntington, and later ballads that give the "origins" of Little John, Maid Marian and Will Scarlet. Also, there's an introductory article on the history of the legend and complete introductions and notes to all the ballads and plays. The notes and introductions are by Stephen Knight and Thomas Ohlgren, two top Robin Hood scholars. If you want to read the original tales of the outlaw, or if you are teach a course in Robin Hood, this book is an excellent buy. Just treat it with care. I notice my cover is fraying somewhat.
