Lenski writes from a conservative (which I appreciate) and Lutheran (which I tolerate) perspective (I am not into infant sprinkling or the Lutheran view of Communion). He regards the Scripture as the Word of God, something I greatly appreciate.

He is very much the scholar, but yet easy to follow. Although he frequently refers to Greek words or terms, Bible students without a Greek background will still value these books. Bible-believing pastors have relied upon his volumes for many decades, but do not let that scare you: he writes in modern, efficient (and to the point) English.

I would recommend purchasing the entire set. If you buy them one volume at a time, however, I would suggest you avoid Revelation unless you hold to an Amillennial perspective. I especially appreciate his help on the Gospels. In my view, a good study Bible, concordance, Bible encyclopedia and Lenski's set are a must for every minister or serious student of the Word.

Perhaps the most helpful chapters are 5 and 6, where he outlines an exegetical method based on analysis of the sentence structure and the structure of the discourse as a whole.

His method of tracing the argument is fine for those just beginning Greek exegesis, but more advanced students will want to consult Cotterell and Turner's work on Linguistics and Biblical Interpretation. Schreiner's categories are too limited and not sufficiently nuanced. His understanding of syntax and semantic structure is limited compared to more recent advances in the field.

Still, on the whole, a great introduction to exegetical method with a view to the Pauline Epistles.

It is NOT a dummy's book, and requires some sophistication from the user, although no previous knowledge. On the other hand, it is well-written, concise (you won't need to read through 20 pages of irrelevant stuff for the author finally converge on the relevant concept), correct and complete.

I highly recommend it.
