Not Just for Foucault Fanatics
This collection of Foucault's essays, lectures, interviews, and editorials, offers even the casual reader of Foucault welcome insights into his methods, his intellectual biography and the development of his own methods. Most valuable perhaps are interviews collected from various magazines where he is challenged by his interviewers to respond to their criticisms and the criticisms of others. In one, for instance, Foucault tries hard to correct those who read his works as a totalizing critique of capitalism, or the current penal system, or the mental institution. He insists that his works are only intended to be seen as the history of various specific institutions and that those critics and followers who are tempted to project his findings onto current practices distort his intent. Whether or not you believe him, his defense of his method and his avowed intent are compelling. In another, he also quickly and cogently characterizes his two main intellectual influences, Hegelism and phenomenology, explains why he rejected these particular philosophical trends, but how they nevertheless challenged him to arrive at his own agenda and the course of his studies. Throughout Foucault is ruthlessly honest about his own failings -- for instance his lack of knowledge about the Frankfurt School, and thoughtful -- his appraisal of the problems that inhere in national healthcare programs, which he generally supports but with interesting qualifications. The editorials, while they address issues that may seem remote or dated, demonstrate that he was actively engaged in the politics of his time, and show how he applies his analytical methods to current events. Some selections will be of interest only to the Foucault fanatic or to his biographers, which is the reason for the four star, instead of the five-star, rating. Highly recommended.

A Practical Introduction to C

Accurate, detailed, concise.
This is one of the best programming books I have ever read. Don't be put off by the small size - this has everything you need. One thing I liked is the attention to detail. It explains things without fobbing you off. If you wanted to know what the #include command REALLY means, this book tells you. Also, the examples used throughout the book are practical things you might actually use. If you have a sloppy approach to programming then you probably won't like this book. Mr Jarvis obviously likes C to be used in the correct form ( you won't see any main(void) starts here), and one of the reasons it's so concise is that he doesn't use ten words where one will do. The exercises at the back of the book are extremely good at teaching the principles of sound C programming, and have the added benefit of being good transferable programs to carry around (I'm always using the IO one I wrote). This book is not definitive, unlike Kernigan and Ritchies, however it does give a lot of practical information that will have you programming in no time. It contains a comparison on the main differences between ANSI and pre-ANSI C. Additionally, it contains the best description of pointers I've ever seen.

Easy and Fun to read; Full of useful Information
This book was a delight. From its easy to find and useful information, to the illustrations peppered throughout. In clear and easy to understand language, this book answers questions and gives the reader enough information to continue questioning her doctor if she wants to know more. I can recommend this to anyone at just about any stage of pregnancy. (I found it about halfway through mine, and read it cover to cover in two days.)

an "I told you so" Book
This book is one of a few books that unfortunately, not enough took seriously when it was printed. Now, it's an excellent addition to the must - read list of any one interested in nonproliferation. Divided into several sections, the book discusses every facet of nuclear terrorism, the how, the where, and the why. Even if some of the intelligence is dated, it still is well thought out, written and presented. A topical reference for today's climate.

Pepsi can collectors best bet so far
I have had this book for a few years and it has helped in keeping my collection in order. It has almost every can produced in the United States from the first cone top, up through 1991. It has black and white photos of most cans, and a complete list of every can they found, ranging from standard issues,(from every bottler and variation) all the way to bank tops, and special events. I never actually counted, but I would say that there are at least 2000 cans listed in this book. I have over 1400 cans and this book has helped fill the gaps that are in my collection. And it's also alot easier to find what it is I am searching for, now that I know what's out there. The prices are subject to debate. All cans are valued by rarity. But value is in the eye of the collector. I would love to see an updated version, and this book does lack in foriegn cans (only a hundred or so listed and pictured). But it's a great way to start your collection, or keep track of what cans you need prior to '91. There is also a list of collectors, and some helpful tips in how to preserve and rate the condition of your cans.

Great First Novel
This is a great first novel from a new author. While the structure is a little rough in spots, the story is a very good read -- at times I didn't want to put the book down.

The story concept is original and very different from any other science fiction books I have read (and I've read a lot). I can only hope that we will see more books from this new author.

A Primer of Pancreatitis.
I found this book to be very imformative in dealing with chronic pancreatitis. It was very simple and understandable to read. You did not need a medical degree to understand the information in the book. This book helped me to be able to make better informed decisions on my medical treatment of this disease. The graphs and illustrations were also very understandable. It helped me to explain to my family and friends what was going on with my body. I would highly recommend it to newly diagnosed patients. I felt not so alone after reading the book.

A good, high-level introduction without much math
I used this text for a distance-learning economics class I took this year. It was an excellent conceptual introduction. Reading it would allowed you to teach yourself a bit about Microeconomics, if you so desire.

In particular, the concepts are explained clearly and succinctly. The authors use a variety of metaphors to daily life that are understandable to practically any adult. The book makes Micro interesting and relatable.

The summary points at the end of each chapter (as well as the key points highlighted in bold lettering throughout the text) allow you to review quickly. There are a lot of good practice problems although the answers are not included in the text.

Overall, I recommend the book highly. My only complaint is that the book is not particularly quantitative or mathematical. That is a strength, in that the book is more easily understandable, but it is also a weakness in that very quantitative people are sometimes left hanging, wanting a mathematical proof of a particular concept.
