Novations: Strategies for Career Management

How to succeed at leading teams
The authors found that people's careers can be characterized by four stages: apprentice, individual contributor, mentor, and sponsor. If people do one stage well, they find it much easier to progress to the next stage. At each stage, the person must do certain things well for other people to consider them successful. If you know what other people expect, you're better able to succeed.

Years ago when I worked with summer students, I gave them the first assignment to read about the first three stages. Then we talked about what each of us should expect from the other. Later when I became a team lead, I had forgotten about this book, and didn't do it. I found some of my earlier notes, and realized that I had had several problems with some team members that I probably would have not had if I had given them that assignment.

Good basic book
This book is good for beginners. It tells you why each step is done & how to avoid mistakes. It does not give protocols. I wish I had this book before I started blotting! I am buying this book for my lab, so incoming graduate students (& undergrads!) will find it useful. It does not give details on hybridization which ideally should have been included in the same volume.

Old DOT [Dict of Occupational Titles] looks out of dark ages
Far superior to old DOT. This ONE book gives info concisely yet on far more Job Titles and has cross references to legacy Dept. of Labor publications. I eagerly jumped on the internet to follow up some leads. When JIST gets all the info up on their website it will be a fantastic resource. I hope they make full book available to bonifide buyers online - cut & paste beats typing! The 4 star rating was based by overly broad Job Titles seeming to inflate the SVP [Specific Vocational Preparation] and GED [General Educational Developement] requirements. This could skew the perception that the goal is less achievable and cost(s) exorbitant. We specifically researched 31514 Vocational & Education Counselor DOT 187.167-198 Veterans Contact Representative. This gave SVP 7 [>2 years and

Obadiah: A New Translation With Introduction and Commentary (Anchor Bible, Vol 24D)

273 pages of commentary on 21 verses!
I have learned much from Dr. Raabe's fine and thorough commentary on this scant OT book. Thorough in his treatment of background and adding his own translation, this commentary seeks to unpack what the inspired 21 verses present.

Helpful was his explanation of the literary use of apostrophe, making the case for this book's real purpose: "simply unfolding and unpacking what Yahweh's future role will mean for Edom, the nations, Zion and Israel."

Knowing Dr. Raabe's theology, surprised to see absence of theological application. However, possibly editorial constraints prevent their inclusion.

For the serious Bible student.

Of Men and Marshes
Published in Paperback by Iowa State Univ Pr (Trd) (June, 1957)
Authors: Paul I. Errington and Paul L. Errington
Amazon base price: $9.45
Used price: $35.35
Collectible price: $6.78
Average review score:

A little-known gem of nature and environment writing
Paul Errington grew up tramping prairie pothole marshes,
then became one of Aldo Leopold's early students, at a time
when traditions of nature observation and waterfowl hunting
were contributing to the growth of ecological science.

This book is a set of connected thoughtful chapters on
the seasons and years of pothole marshes - "Of Marshes
and Winter", "Of Marshes and Spring", etc., concluding with
"Of Marshes and Time" and "Of Marshes and Man".

Marsh environments change greatly from year to year;
vivid paragraphs of here-and-now description alternate
with meditations on past years and the ebb and flow of
life. Muskrats, hawks, mink, ducks and geese, shore birds,
owls, foxes, fish: Errington watched and tracked and
recorded their lives, and their deaths.

Errington's clean spare style is a pleasure, and Hochbaum's
pen-and-ink illustrations beautifully complement the text;
I particularly love one with a few flocks sharing a dawn sky
with the morning star.

Highly recommended to anyone who has read and enjoyed
Aldo Leopold, Sigurd Olson, David Rains Wallace, or
Barry Lopez, and to waterfowl hunters, bird watchers --

Fun
Worthwhile use of the "World's Finest" title for this first animated meeting between the Bat and the Big Blue Cheese. (For many years, "World's FInest"'s lead story every month was a Batman/Superman team-up, in an era when hero's team-ups were not common)

Excellent adaptation of the original; however, not a slavish one -- plays the rivalry between Batman/Bruce and Superman/Clark for Lois Lane's affections a little more broadly (the visual differences between the animated and the comic versions of the scene in which Clark calls at Lois's apartment and Bruce is already there are Significant).

Harley Quinn's running feud with Luthor's bodyguard/chauffeur, Mercy, is one of the high points.

While it doesn't bring much new, it's a good counterpoint to the film it adapts in giving alternate, slightly more "adult" views on some things -- if you have one, you really need the other.

Runner, Marine, Inspiration
Paul Reese continues to confound the laws of nature. While most of his peers are confined to nursing homes or, worse, no longer with us, Lt. Col. Paul Reese, USMC Retired, keeps on running. Reese's books inspire me to get out the door for my daily run, no matter how bad the weather or ill tempered I may feel that day. He provides the reader with not one ounce of advice other than "If I can accomplish this task at my age, you surely can too." This book serves the runner as another fine ispiration from a wonder of nature. Highly recommended.
