A disappointment
I saw the other reviews of this book, and I have to wonder if the reviewers really read this abridged version of the play. This is one of our family's favorite plays, and I bought this book to allow us to do a living room performance of it in one evening. I was disappointed. First, the copy has many errors in it that make performing it confusing. For instance, in Act I, Scene 1, when Egeus brings Hermia and Demetrius and Lysander before Theseus, there is a stage direction that says "Demetrius exit and Helena follow." although Helena has not appeared (in this or any other version of the play) until later in the scene. Second, every person who has to make cuts in this play does it differently, but Cass Foster has cut some parts that I really miss, especially Bottom's playing the "tyrant" in Act I, Scene 2, and the rest of Thisby's death speech in Act V. Those scenes seem wooden and hurried without those lines. If I had known what this book was like, I would have ordered a different book with the full text and cut out lines myself. It would be easier than going through this text and correcting typos and adding lines that I feel need to be there.

A letter from a customer in Baku, Azerbaijan
March 5, 1999

Dear friends at Five Star Pub.,

We have a small school on the other side of the planet from you in a country called Azerbaijan. It's kind of a home school coop. Two years ago we performed your version of Romeo and Juliet and last year, A Midsummer Night's Dream. We really enjoy your versions because of the suggestions for staging (we're all rookies) and your notes of explanation on difficult phrases. I have to admit that the kids liked the Romeo and Juliet notes the best because there were more of them but we also like the new layout of Midsummer. It's easier to use.

Thanks for your help,

Cindi Wagner Baku, Azerbaijan

The Snow Goose and Other Stories

Not the original!
Important... Please note that this book has been rewritten for a very young audience by Christine Rose. This is not the book as it originally appeared!

Great for young adults
This book is incorrectly listed as a book for babies. It is written for adults (young adults, and not so young!).

I LOVED The Snow Goose as a teenage girl. My son does not like to read, so I'm buying it for him because I think he will enjoy it. The Snow Goose is touching and inspirational, but it has enough war stuff to keep boys interested. I gave it 4 stars rather than 5 because I haven't yet read the other stories. I'm anxious to read them, and to re-read the classic Snow Goose myself.

It's difficult to find good books for boys who would rather not read, so I'm pleased to find this book available!

Great for a beginner (but not "Complete")
This book covers all the relevant topics for a beginning Solaris SA, clearly and well organized (vs. other P.Waters books).
For the more advanced topics, his Sol 9 Complete book looks good.
Unfortunately, in this job market, I don't see much need for a "beginner Unix SA", because Sr. SA's (with lots of other exp.) are already a "dime a dozen".

Good exam/beginner's guide
I bought this book last week because I am just a beginner at the whole Solaris thing, coming from a Linux background. The book covers a lot of really good timely topics - LDAP, role based access control etc. - and is written real good. It's like an exam guide which is funny - there are loads of review questions in each chapter and little projects to try out. All in all, it's a very comprehensive book for a beginner. And maybe useful for exam study too (are there certs for Solaris 9 yet?).

Soul murder: persecution in the family

Soul Murder: Persecucution in the Family
Excellent book, not completely for American child abuse related problems.
An extreme case of "well intentioned" child abuse. Gives an insight to many questio about European child rearing. The methods described here are of limited aplicability towards understanding child abuse because it describes gadgets not used in this country where parents are more likely to be blamed for over indulgence and children are more often neglected than disciplined.
This is a book about abuse through over-discipline, which is still prevalent in some circles in northen Europe, mainly Germany, Austria, The Netherlands, Luxemburg, Flemish Belgium, and German Switzerland.
However, it gives a clear idea of what happens when a child is deprived of his/her own personality and not allowed to express him/herself, whatever the method used to get complete control over his spirit. It is a case of extreme autoritarian parenting. Discipline taken to the extreme

Essential reading on trauma, inexplicably out of print
Briefly, this book is amazing. It is inexplicable (or, perhaps, telling) that it is out of print. The concept of images and transforms is penetrating and valuable, and the book is a fascinating read for both specialists and interested laypeople. Until this book returns to print, students of trauma should either obtain the book used or take a copy out of the library (and photocopy it!). It is essential reading on trauma.

Fresh Rain
"Soul of the Sky" is fresh rain amidst the usual smorgasbord of weather textbooks and technical guides. Exploring the personal side of the weather, "Soul of the Sky" is a compilation of well written stories of human interaction with the weather. As a stormchaser myself, I particularly enjoyed "Only a Storm", an essay by Robert Henson about life under the moody skies of Tornado Alley.

Soul of the Sky
The stories in this book will bring back memories of storms you have weathered throughout your life. And if you've never experienced some of nature's harshest weather, you'll get a real feel for it after reading this book. It was quite a fascinating read.

Puffed Out with Air
This book has some interesting things to say about how the practice of silent reading and the practice of putting spaces between written words are mutually reinforcing. Correspondingly, in cultures where reading is primarily reading aloud, written languages tend not to have spaces between words. But most of what the book has to say could have been said in a couple of articles. It is very repetitive and the author has a remarkable ability to use a lot of words to say very little.

An unexpected pearl
Browsed onto this book in a leftovers store. It is an academic research on the history of "silent" reading that the author relates to the transition from the "continuous" print to book-printing method that we all are familiar with, take for granted, and believe it's always been that way--with space-separated words. Perhaps I'm abnormally curious, but the book immediately grabbed my attention and, even though I am not qualified to judge its scientific importance, reading this unexpected find satisfied my appetite for all things historical in the highest degree. It truly pays to aimlessly browse sometimes--from the title alone I wouldn't never imagine this book can possibly be of any interest to a layman.

And besides, it is not academically dry at all, on the contrary, the book is rather well written--quite a page turner. Also, it isn't as big as it appears to be, because about a third of it is dedicated to an extensive and wonderfully detailed bibliography. Highly recommended.

Not as good as they say...
I took an advanced Spanish class at the University level this semester. This was the book required for that class...The only good thing in this book was the vocabulary after each chapter. It lists different words and it's synonyms. But the grammatical lessons in this book were truly worthless. The exercises provided here were not too good. Even my professor said that they weren't good. Since there was a change in professor after the second week of school...she couldn't go back and ask us to buy new books when we had already bought this one. So she instead wrote up exercises on her own and we practiced this way. If it's required to have this book...I suggest to buy a spanish grammar review book to complement this book. Something like the ultimate Spanish Review for intermediate and advanced learners. Otherwise...I'd go for a better book.

Great for more advanced study
I just found this book on my high school Spanish teacher's shelves. It really must be a classic as the reviews say because her copy is from 1968. The book is great if you want to reach native ability, especially in reading. After each selection, there are notes about specific words which often compare and contrast synonyms and give guidelines on useage which I really like.

A heartfelt recollection of Steinberg's life in the camps.
I haven't heard of Paul Steinberg before I read this book. The book is a gem and recollects the life of a camp inmate trying to survive the war. Steinberg was one of those people who helped
the inmate leadership run the killing camps. He was a chemist in one of the IB Farben complexes. His short but powerful story shows how stronger people were consumed, while a flexible youngster survived the camps by doing what he had to do to stay alive.
This should be required reading for those people who deny that the Holocaust happened. It is also a reminder that the general population should always remember these events. Steinberg found this book hard to write, but it was easy to read and conveyed a powerful perspective.

A Great Example of Holocaust Literarture
I just finished reading this great first-hand account of living through the Holocaust in Nazi death camps, by Paul Steinberg. What separates this text is that it seems less caught up with providing the reader with every single detail of daily life and more focused with the author's personal struggle, the friendships gained and forgotten, the death camp's social hieracrchies, and of course, his incredible task of survival. Paul Steinberg admits that he was an atypical Jew, uninvolved with Jewish ways and traditions, and he wonders why he survived and others perished; Jews that were more religious, possessed more wisdom, strength, etc. Truly, Steinberg's ordeal is almost unbelievable. He was able to do what he had to in order to survive. This book is great if you want to gain a good understanding of these historical events, a different time period in life, and the human struggle, all through the eyes of this remarkable man. He is honest and sincere, and holds nothing back.

nice
I have bought the special edition using autocad2000 to help me with a course I am taking at college. I had my teacher take a gander and he said that it was a good book but thought that it could elaborate a little more. The idea of spending some time explaining about drafting was a very nice touch though. philiperochon@aol.com

A must-have for long-time AutoCAD users!
A must-have for long-time AutoCAD users who want to quickly implement AutoCAD 2000- and 2000i-based products. The beauty of this book is its focus on effectively using AutoCAD to solve business problems. A great supplement to the out-of-box documentation from Autodesk.

This Rat Has Teeth!
What a relief to read The Stainless Steel Rat Wants You after the disappointing Stainless Steel Rat in Hell! What a difference fifteen years can make!

This Stainless Steel Rat is the Rat we all fell in love with - biting sarcasm, acerbic wit, the lapses in attention that land him in trouble, the daring escapes from that trouble, and a plot that moves briskly at all times, always staying a half step ahead of the reader. Just under 150 pages, it is just the right length; short enough to be read in one sitting, but long enough to draw the reader in.

The only downside to this one is the packaging. Contrary to the title and cover propaganda, the Rat does no recruiting (beyond his lovely yet dangerous wife and the twins). A better title would have been, The Stainless Steel Rat: Bug-eyed Alien Sex Goddess. Read the book and you'll see what I mean.

The best SSR book yet
I have read & enjoyed a number of Harry Harrison's Stainless Steel Rat books, but this has got to be the best one yet. The book is loaded with the same slap-dash sense of humour and spontaneous action as found in the other SSR books, but this book's clever, well thought out plot puts it far above them. Slippery Jim's final solution for dealing with the slimy alien problem-makers is ingenious and satisfying, as is his surprising insight to the behaviour of the galaxy's sadistic grey men.
