Friday's Laws: How to become normal when you're not and how to stay normal when you are
Published in Hardcover by Bradley Oak Publications (03 April, 1999)
Author: Paul J. Friday
Amazon base price: $21.95

Gain balance in one sitting. Full of humor and insight.
Friday's Laws not only lends stability and comfort, but shows how easy it is to make oneself stable and comfortable. Dr. Friday catches and fries the fish for us, but also give us the line and teaches us how to use it ourselves. The conversation-like prose enables participation by using humor, and the book includes some revealing self-exams and memorable laws to live by. I recommend this book for anybody who craves some stability in life. Thank you, Dr. Friday.

Fringe

Very interesting book
I used to have all the issues of Fringe. I loved this comic book and was a bit disappointed when I was expecting Father Nietzsche to appear in it, and didn't, and I'm surprised that the comic just ended where it did. There was more to this than where it ends, and I wonder why Paul Tobin didn't put the rest in. Otherwise, this is a great book and it's what got me into reading comic books in the first place. I love it and I wish the best to Paul Tobin and Phil Hester.

From the Mouths of Babes : The Criminal Trial of a Sunday School Teacher

Author: Paul Grey

Used price: $8.99

This could happen to you, too...
As the book explains, Dr. Grey was accused of sexually abusing a little girl in Sunday School. The basis of the allegation was a nightmare reported by the girl's mother, endorsed by the pastor, and left unquestioned by the congregation. During the trial, prosecution witnesses couldn't get their individual stories straight, much less their corporate story. Unfortunately for Dr. Grey, the careless actions of a handful of people were allowed to wreak havoc on his life.

The author faced 30 years in jail. He had a standing plea offer throughout the trial by which he could have avoided any jail time. Yet he and his wife chose to pay the price of a trial--both psychological and financial--in a effort to clear his name.

This book is not so much a self defense as it is a hindsight-enabled reconstruction of what went wrong in the author's case and why. You'll learn what could happen to you, too, if three bad things converge:

1) some untrusting person accuses you of an unspeakable crime,
2) an authority figure is too quick to take your accuser?s side, and
3) "good people" do nothing.

This 240 page book can be divided into equal thirds as follows:

1. Pre-trial. The author provides detail about himself. This establishes his credibility, but also helps us see things from the state's perspective and from the perspective of his accusers. There?s also enlightening info about polygraph exams, police roles, choosing a lawyer, and courtroom strategy.

2. Trial. The middle third is mainly a reprint of court transcripts. Key testimonies are those of the alleged victim, her mother, and the pastor. As the transcripts represent, the one person who should have been able to shed light evenhandedly--the pastor--wasn?t up to the task. It was as if his church were on trial, and he conciously chose to sacrifice one innocent man to save his life?s work.

3. Post-trial. First the author speculates about what he could have / should have done differently, with an eye toward helping others who may face similar crises. Then he takes a broader look at the state of the American judicial system on the specific issue of "presumed innocence" in light of allegations of sexual misconduct.

The author has a PhD in physics, so his writing is quite organized and readable. Yet, since he's not a psychologist or a lawyer, he treats the subject in a most practical way. Further, Dr. Grey has done a commendable job of showing understanding toward his accusers and being objective about his own shortcomings.

I wish I could give this book 5 stars, but it's just not the kind of thing you want to keep on your coffee table. Yet if I were the head of any organization involved with child care--esp. a pastor with a nursery / sunday school ministry--I would make this book required reading for all associated personnel.

Quick & Concise for on-the-go traveling
This book proved itself very useful for out weekend drive up the coast. Naturally, there are many places to stay or dine, but you can't list them all (in this "portable" book). However, we did need to purchase a Maine Highway Map for better directions. I wish I'd gotten the book BEFORE I made Hotel reservations!

What's the Deal With Joy?
Joy. It's a great fruit of the spirit. Unfortunately, many people mistake happiness for joy and thereby have no understanding of what joy really is. This small book contains various quotations and scripture passage that enliven, explain, and illuminate what joy is. An excellent book to give to someone as a gift.

Fantastic fashion
There are six pre-cut, easy-to-use stencils in this little book, printed on sturdy cardstock. Each page depicts a traditional dragon in a different style, including Italian, Swiss, Chinese, French, and Bhutanese. The dragons are beautiful and elaborate, without being too detailed. My favorite is the lithe Bhutanese dragon, which I've used to make a t-shirt, but the others are all great, and I put them all on a bookcase (along with the Mythical Creatures stencils from the same series).

Cool!
There are six sturdy pre-cut stencils in this little book from Dover. The dinosaurs are clearly labeled, and the perfect size for lots of projects. They're handy for painting dinosaurs on bookcases or cupboards, for making posters and feltboards, for decorating t-shirts and mirrors. The dinosaurs in this book include a great stegosaurus, a neat dimetrodon, and a stylish triceratops, as well as a tyrannosaurus, a flying rhamphorynchus, and a stately diplodocus.
