The Spiritual Intelligence Handbook

Practical Spiritual Intelligence
Wow! For twenty-two chapters, Fr. Paul Edwards simply explains that "We must discover what we are looking for inside not outside of ourselves." Practical and down to earth, the book is divided into four sections: Who are you?, Marriage and Family, Relationships and Theory of Spirituality. I especially found the 'Spiritual Intelligence Inventory' that begins almost every chapter fun and enlightening. It is very apparent as you work through the book that Fr. Paul has years of experience helping people in a variety of situations. I have read the entire book and then have come back to the individual chapters as I encounter things in my own life. An excellent book with practical advice for living with Spiritual Intelligence!

Strong Spiritual Medicine!
The Spiritual Intelligence Handbook is easy to read and understand, but full of radical new truths! It demystifies spirituality, and makes living in "the Peace" simple to achieve. This is not the place to look for complex explanations and cerebral theology. Instead, look here for highly distilled wisdom that will change your understanding of spirituality, and change your life!

Answers to Finding Inner Peace
Peace is just a thought away. The world is looking for the peace this author states is to be found by looking inward to access God given spiritual intelligence. This practical handbook provides answers to often asked questions regarding life's challenges and problems. The format of the handbook allows the reader to search out answers to their particular area of concern: self-discovery, questions regarding marriage and family, relationships and spirituality. In an age searching for happiness in the outside world, this book suggests looking within for the presence of God who loves us and gives us peace.

The Splendor of Truth: Encyclical Letter of John Paul II

A Worthy Defense of TRUTH & Freedom
Pope John Paul II's THE SPLENDOR OF TRUTH is a clear and unpretentious dissertation on the nature of TRUTH as a subsistent reality upon which human freedom, and concommitant dignity, derive their subsequent claims and integrity. Axiom: Subsistent Truth is precedent to Human freedom. That is: Truth prescribes freedom; freedom does NOT define Truth...or disavow its absolute claim on finite man. In the Christian tradition TRUTH is identified with THE LOGOS. ( In Greek traditon "Logos" is the principle of intelligibility which allows reality to be analyzed and validated) In Christian traditon THE LOGOS is an actualizing principle of the Nature of God, and the sustaining principle of Reality and Truth. This belief is a metaphysical act of FAITH. Pope John Paul II asserts this axiom over against Post-Modern Relativism that posits Man's Freedom as ultimate arbiter of Truth. The latter belief is a meta-ethical assertion of Will-to- Power. Articles 84, 86, 99, 101 and 105 are key explications provided in this Encyclical that forcefully defend what has been a traditional definition and exlanation of Truth in the West for more than 2000 years as well as rebuking the radical efforts of Post-Modernists (beginning with Schopenhauer, Nietzsche and particularly Martin Heidegger)to reverse not only THE ORDER OF KNOWING (ontological epistemology or simply "science")but THE ORDER OF BEING (the etiology of right conduct, or simply ethics). THE SPLENDOR OF TRUTH is an important document in the history of ideas and philosophy. Not because it is highly original, but on the contrary, because it adresses perhaps the most crucial issue humanity must contend with. Is man humble enough to accept limits as a creature blessed with (created/given)Freedom to conform himself...as best he can...to the Image and Likeness of the Creator who made him? Or shall he launch himself into (what Heiddeger called Das Ereignis) NOTHINGNESS, attempting to devise an "Image" worthy of self-homage to aspire to and celebrate? John Paul is not "preaching to the choir" in this effort. Nor is this a catechism for convinced (or would-be)Catholics. This is a well-reasoned philosophical essay that presents arguments, counters; consequences and probable outcomes in a battle against what C. S. Lewis called THE ABOLITION OF MAN. Pope John Paul II wrote a supporting encyclical, FIDES ET RATIO...On the Relationship between Faith & Reason. This is also recommended to readers who are encouraged by THE SPLENDOR OF TRUTH. For those who are not, or for those who have been beguiled by the headiness of the apparent approach of (self-)Apotheosis, I propose to you a quip from St. Augustine, a man who certainly knew how to abuse both Truth & Freedom by "wandering in self-willed error" (The Confessions: XV): DO NOT GO LOOKING FOR A LIBERATION WHICH WILL LEAD YOU FAR FROM THE HOUSE OF YOUR LIBERATOR!" (Commentaries on the Psalms,St. Augustine AD 1397). If I said to to you, Truth is Truth when it participates in THE LOGOS which is...among other qualities...SUBSISTENT TRUTH, you might well retort: So what? Pope John Paul II's essay of expert opinion and HIGHER AUTHORITY may be worthy enough to convince you of the necessity of knowing and defending Truth if we are to remain free and human...Amen?

Comments from a Graduate Student in Literature..
The combination of the 'Catechism' and The Spendor of Truth are, perhaps, the most necessary tools for any and all Catholic thinkers/scholars; as well as anyone interested in discovering the authentic teachings of the Church - minus the broad-stroked misinformation of the mass media.

A very deep book full of truth about life
Pope John Paul is a brillian writer who brings us an excellent summary of truth as it has been discerned over the last 2000 years of Christianity. This book is true to Scripture, the tradition of the early Church Fathers and Catholic Doctrine. It speaks strongly against modern tendencies to deny the concept of absolute truth found in moral relativism. This is a must reading for all who are seeking the truth revealed to us by Christianity.

New insights on early christianity
Michael Goulder is the most insightful voice I have encountered in the study of early Christianity. His hypothosis of two Christian churches, one headed by Peter and James in Jeruselum and the other headed by Paul during his travels is nothing short of genius. He draws almost exclusively on biblical texts to paint a picture of early Christianity struggling to remain true to its Jewish past (the Petrines) while drawing an ever-growing number of gentile followers (the Paulines). The tension in Goulder's dichotomy sheds a fascinating light on many of the more troubling passages in Acts and Paul's letters, making them instantly come into focus. This is a book which will have you wondering why you never made these connections in the first place. It will also cause you to rethink the traditional views that Paul was writing to oppose the influences of traditional Jews, gnostics, or some other faction. Goulder's insights are simply breathtaking.

A Fascinating Look into the First Century, C. E.
Michael Goulder is an outstanding biblical scholar, who usually writes for a scholarly audience, but this book was written for the general reader interested in the history of the Bible and of Christianity. Goulder is no Isaac Asimov, but he does manage to write a book the interested layman can understand. It requires more effort on the reader's part than it would if Asimov had written it, but the effort is still not excessive, and is well worth it.

Paul, a Jew who had been strongly opposed to the "Followers of the Way" (the proto-Christian movement within Judaism) experienced something on the road to Damascus which converted him from an opponent of the Jesus movement to an ardent supporter. Paul was convinced that Jesus' message was not just for Jews, but for all humanity. He took his mission out of Israel, where most of the people were Jews, to Turkey and elsewhere where there were few Jews. He wisely realized that few Gentiles would accept circumcision and the strict Kosher (food) laws of Judaism as a condition of joining the churches Paul was founding, so he downplayed these tough requirements, and did not seek to enforce them. Peter and Jesus' brother James, meanwhile, remained in Jerusalem and kept the Jewish Law entirely. They sent out pairs of missionaries to the churches Paul had established, and these missionaries tried to bring the far-flung churches into line with Jewish law, which Peter and James saw as essential, but which Paul saw as superseded by Jesus.

It will likely never be possible to determine which position the historical Jesus would have taken in this controversy (quite possibly somewhere between Peter and Paul), but it is clear that the Pauline position won out; it has even been suggested that Paul, rather than Jesus, was the founder of Christianity, and in a sense he surely was.

This book is a must read for anyone who wants to know and understand the beginnings of Christianity. Read it and make up your own mind!

Paul's won, and Jesus' lost.
Goulder shows how, by appealing to the gentiles, Paul usurped authority from Peter, ending the mission set in motion by Jesus. After reading "St. Paul versus St. Peter," you may agree with A. N. Wilson, who says at the conclusion of his book, "Paul: the Mind of the Apostle," that "Paul, and not Jesus, was...the 'Founder of Christianity.'" Goulder, a professor of Biblical Studies at the U. of Birmingham, U.K., is a gifted writer, making some fairly complex ideas very easy to understand. His book is in need of a bibliography and an index, and this is frustrating if you wish to further explore his ideas, but it is well worth the buy.

A touching story
When I read the book for the first time I thought that it was a wonderful book because of how all the charcters expressed their feelings throught the book. Brooke didn't want to be a dance but she also wanted her mother to be proud of her and what she chose to do with her life. It was sad when her mother had died but I was happy for the whole family when Brooke was on TV doing her dance. She also had a lot of guts to do that and try out for all those auditions and get turned down.It does take a lot of guts to do that and I think that everyone who wants to do something that big should read this book and learn what Brooke Hillary did.

This novel warmed my heart and put tears in my eyes!
Ten minutes ago i put this novel down. Reading Level 5? Who are you kidding, i would read this novel at age 20! Bonnie and Paul Zindel paired up well to write a fantastic duet story that was both passionate and foreboding. A Star For the Latecomer tells a wonderful story of a girl pressured by her dieing mom to be a champion dancer. Brooke Hillary, the star of the novel, must make up for all that her mother had lost in her own childhood, and therefore, Brooke loses her childhood as well. This powerful novel, depicts what we all feel at some time or another, to make someone proud. Brooke's character has an international appeal that every one can relate to. She shares the emotions of the world. Brooke wants to be loved, she wants to give love, she wants to live, she wants to feel complete, and at times she feels that all is lost. I personally have read almost every single title out by Paul Zindel (he is my favorite author), and let me say that this novel was no disapointment to me. At the climatic ending, i dont think i took a breath. Then at Brooke's epiphany, i symphathized with her, and felt as though she was truley real. It takes a good author, or should i say authors, to perform such an act. Kudos to both of you, Bonnie and Paul. Please write more novels like this one, it has almost become a secretive therapy of mine reading your novels!

This book brought me to tears!
I believe that this book will emotionally change your life. The part that was the most gut-wrenching was when I read the few last chapters. I loved this book with all my heart. As I was reading through this marveleous book I grew to know the troubles Brooke was going through and you had this certain familiarity with her life as you would read along. I was sobbing throughout this book, and for me that is not a bad thing. You , after you read this book, will know that you have grown with this experience. I think anyone that cares enough about any kind of book should read this, and experience the emotions I felt when I read this book. I would proudly reccomend this book to anyone!

THIS STORY MADE ME CRY AS A CHILD
A little boy had a set of tin soldiers that were made from a melted spoon. One soldier was missing a leg because there was not enough metal left over from the melted spoon.

Tossed aside by the boy, the one-legged soldier sees a paper cut out figure of a ballerina. She is poised on one leg and he feels an instant bond. He has found another one-legged toy and believes this to be love.

The steadfast tin soldier has a series of mishaps. He falls off the window sill into a stream. From there, he is transported to a rat infested sewer. He is swallowed by a fish and through an unlikely stroke of luck, winds up back in the boy's playroom with the other toys and the ballerina.

The ending is what gets to me every single time. A gust of wind lifts the paper ballerina up and she flutters into the fire place, winding up a charred heap of ashes. Devastated, the tin soldier joins her. The remaining metal that was once the tin soldier is a charred piece of heart shaped metal.

I still think this is a very sad story. The photographs really emphasize the feeling this story evokes.

great book!
I taught 1st grade for 4 years and all of the teachers in my grade passed this book around at Christmas to read to our class. I cried everytime I read it. It has a wonderful message and my kids in my classroom always loved it! I have now (finally) purchased my own copy of this book to read to my little girl. It is a classic and I know she will love it as much as I do. Every home should have this book to read at Christmastime.

Brilliant! Improves on the original version.
This is a really good book. It has all the characteristic's that made the original a cherished and remembered fairy tale. It is a great gift for any young child, and can be enjoyed by adults too. It maintains the feel of the original tale, but is more like a poem. The art work on each page is beautiful, and the pictures are totally devine. I would recomend buying this for a different and fully enjoyable version of the original.

GARGOYLES Defenders of the Night
This is a great book about the hit TV Disney series "Gargoyles". It's not the usual Disney tone which makes it more unique and fascinating. They are defenders of the night waking up in Manhattan after being in stone sleep for a millenium. You definitely should read this book.

Gargoyles' survival
From medievel Scotland to modern-day America a clan of Gargoyles learns a new way of life, one that is completely different from the one they left and hard to comprehend. With the help of their human friend, Eliza Masa, they learn to adapt. The book is faithful to the tv cartoon series, as are the illustrations depicting the Gargoyle clan.

GREAT PLAYER! SERIOUS OMISSION!
From the years 1968-1976, I was working, playing acoustic bass, under the name of Richard Youngstein. In Paul's very hip, very open book, he refers to playing a cool gig in Boston at the (long defunct) Jazz Workshop for one week with his long time drummer, Barry Altschul (whom I went to high school with in the Bronx) and "some bass player." Obviously Paul didn't remember my name, even though I recorded half an album with him on Polydor, called "The Paul Bley Synthesizer Show," produced by Orin Keepnews, and another album with his ex-wife, Annette Peacock, for French Polydor, that I heard had two titles, "Blood," and "Revenge." If anyone has a copy of either LP PLEASE let me know -I never got one & never heard it! Anyway, I also recorded under that name with Carla Bley & JCOA on "Escalator Over The Hill." I was very active in those years, playing w/Ros Rudd, Bill Dixon, Robin Kenyetta, Karl Berger, etc. I moved to LA late in 1976 and switched careers kind of, and names. I got my doctorate and license in psychology(like my late mentor, the great bassist David Izenzon)and have been in the healing field ever since. I had a trio/quartet "Erotic Zone," for some years and played periodically. Anyway, I am the same person, whether the old Richard Youngstein or the more recent Dr. Noah Young. Just thought I'd give a name to "some bass player" on the Jazz Workshop gig with mssrs. Bley and Altschul. And....Paul's book is awesome. Truly one of the giants of jazz and a priviledge to have made music with.(Write me at: Noazarc22@aol.com)

Great stuff from a great player
Although Paul Bley isn't given anywhere near the recognition he deserves in America, his influence on contemporary players is deep and profound, going from Chick Corea and Keith Jarrett through to nearly any younger jazz piano player today who is worthwhile. His lasting contribution is his demostration of what can be done with total freedom now that all the rules have been broken. You don't have to stay inside or outside with tonality or rhythm, being free means being able to go to either direction or any place in between.

This highly entertaining book tells his complete story from gigging in Canada to the present day. Some of the most compelling stories come from the exciting days of the October Revolution of 1964 and the formation of the the Jazz Composers Guild. There's also some great stuff on his involvement in the birth of performance synthesizers. But there's lots of great little stories including how Lucille Ball saved his life!

get it
bley is as brilliantly understated in words as he is in music, and anyone familiar with his music or the many musicians he has played with (or anyone at all into jazz) will find a lot of stories in this book -- candid, funny, and illuminating. he never stays in one place for long, but always seems to end up somewhere interesting, which is why it's impossible to stop reading. not to mention the incredible photographs. the book may be too short by half, but you get the picture...

Heart stopping book that you wont want to put down!!
This was a great ending to a terrific series by Mark Berent. I found myself unable to put this book down. Wold Lochert, Court Bannister and Toby Parker were amazing characters and were so life like I was sad to see the series end. I definately recommend reading not only this book but this great series.

Fitting conclusion to a Fabulous series.
Following the exploits of Court Bannister, Wolf Lochert, Toby Parker and the gang showed me believable action; let me observe the transition of young hotshots into responsible adults through experiences with war and life; taught me history, the real thing I didn't get from the media in the 1960s; focused me on geography, with which I'm getting better. Not so very different from the young people I see at our USO where I volunteer each week. Most of all, it let me come to some resolution and peace in my own mind about VietNam. Those young men I knew in the 1960s who willingly went to serve were right in their intent, despite an Administration and press who failed to support them. Those who didn't come back did not die in vain, and are remembered fondly. My only regret is that it's the last of the series. I hope Mark Berent is not finished writing! More! More! Another series! Something!

One of the best Viet Nam novels.
Having finished the final volume in Mark Berent's exciting series of Viet Nam ficton based on fact books, I'm moved to write the following. Looking back on how politicians and peaceniks played into the hands of the communists, I think I know how America's fighting men felt when they where sent to a war by a country that didn't really want to win. Mark Berent gets you into the heads of his protaganists, and you're left shaking your head at the lies that were fed to us while our boys were fighting and dying. A great, exciting set of tales. My thanks to him for making me remember the sacrifice given by so many.
