Stained glass panels, without the glass
Paul Kennedy's STAINED GLASS WINDOWS COLORING BOOK has sixteen panels adapted from medieval windows. What makes this collection really neat is that the illustrations are on translucent paper -- you can color one side or both (with the same colors or different colors, depending on the effect you want) and hang them in the window to allow them to be illuminated like the real thing. The bold drawings and dark backgrounds also make for excellent photocopies if you slide a piece of blank white paper behind the transparent page before you copy.

This is an easy read full of WOW! I gotta try this stuff!
I have personally adopted a number of suggestions Paul has made in his book, and let me tell you, it works. This guy has it all in one bag!

One of the quickest and easiest changes to make is that of "volunteering". As a result of my volunteering for everything that came sailing by, I got a 25% raise and it happened in the first 30 days of new employment! And I didn't have to work all that hard to get it!

Another item Paul illuminates is thinking about how to get "it" done. Being willing to stick my neck out a little and vocalize the problem and offer workable solutions has the "Boss" sitting back in his chair and saying, "Go for it. Sounds like you know what you are talking about." Paul calls this making yourself 'useful' and what it really means is ultimately being useful to yourself!

This is an easy read full of 'Wow', 'Aha' and 'I'll be darned'! 'I gotta try this stuff!'

I believe that if anyone is serious about a rewarding and enjoyable career, no matter what it is, this book is a must read. Paul Bauck puts it down in writing and makes it understandable, useable and rewardable.

This is information that is fun to learn!

Great hands-on philosophy!
This book creates an immediate intimacy with the author, Anthony Damiani. "Standing In Your Own Way" is the clearest book on the ego that I have ever seen. Damiani uses philosophy and psychology to define the ego and presents a very practical approach on how to deal with it. Philosophy becomes alives through the clear thinking and helpful examples Damiani gives. A real killer for the ego!

_The _ classic on the origins of the State
The State, Oppenheimer persuasively argues, is always born in the conquest of one group by another. The conquerors then set themselves up as the government and extract tribute in the form of taxes from the conquered. This is the work that influenced another classic -- Albert Jay Nock's _Our Enemy, the State__ and also the great Austrian economist Murray Rothbard. It is indeed an eye-opener. After you read it, you'll never look at the government the same.

Excellent for engineering students
After desperately searching for a good book in statistical estimation theory in the library I found this book to be an excellent resource and worth buying. It has easy explanations and the examples help one better understand the material. It covers both estimation and detection theory. This book is probably best for the engineering student that is more concern with applying the concepts than deriving theorems.

Steps Towards Life: A Perspective on Evolution
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (June, 1996)
Authors: Manfred Eigen, Ruthild Winkler-Oswatitsch, and Paul Woolley
Amazon base price: $26.00
Average review score:

Origin of life: how simple molecules started to replicate
This is a short book, but full of facts and insights. Eigen presents his ideas about the origin of life, i.e. how "inorganic" molecules started to replicate and fill the earth. The book is full of ingenious new concepts, backed in almost every case by biochemical experimental results (this is something Stuart Kauffman seldoms does: At Home in the Universe is about the same chemical/biochemical processes, but only about consepts, no data to back the ideas). Eigen's book is concise, even too terse. Some knowledge of (bio)chemistry is absolutely required, as the arguments in the book are not just hand waving but show equations and sequences (for those with more verbal approach to evolution, Claus Emmeche book "The Garden in the Machine" gives a good discussion on the relationship between the real life and the artificial model systems used to study it.)

Steve Yzerman : The Quiet Captain (Sport Snaps)

A Must Read
This book is a must read for all hockey fans, not just Red Wings or Yzerman fans. It follows one of the NHL's greatest captain throughout his NHL career, from the beginning to his 16 years as a Red Wing to his back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships in 1997 and 1998. It's not just filled with stories to put a smile on your face, though. There's amazing full-colour photos of Steve at his best and quotes from many NHL players and coaches about Steve. I think the most interesting part of the book is Steve's game-day routine . I've always wondered what a player like Steve does on game-day, now I know! Paul Harris has put together a great book that all hockey fans can enjoy. I recommend it to everyone who likes hockey. From little kids to adults, anyone can enjoy this book.

Still to Be Born
Published in Paperback by Perinatal Loss (June, 1986)
Authors: Pat Schwiebert and Paul Kirk
Amazon base price: $6.00
Used price: $4.95
Average review score:

Excellent book for considering pregnancy after loss.
Of the books I read on coping with grief resulting from a stillbirth, Still to be Born was the only one that addressed the emotional issues of a second pregnancy after losing a baby late in a pregnancy. It tells stories of other women who have lost their children and gone on to have more. Still to be Born realistically describes the grief process and the issues surrounding a new pregnancy. It addressed all my concerns and made me more confident about getting pregnant again while still making me aware of the emotional difficulties ahead.
