A great review of the Evangelical movement in South America
This book is a must read for anyone interested in doing missionary work in Latin America. It describes the changes that have been occuring over the past few decades. It is an excellent source of history of the Christian Church and their involvement in Latin America. As a person who has lived a large percentage of my life in Latin America, I feel this book represents the life of Latin Americans in a positive but truthful manner. If you are interested in the changes of the church in Latin America, I believe "The Gospel People" is a must read.

How to integrate Gospel spirituality with Liturgy?
I received a copy of this book as a Christmas gift from the archbishop and at the next opportunity I thanked him in person. He encouraged me again to read it, saying, "The chapter on preaching is particularly inspiring." In order to fulfil my promise to him I sat down with the book. In spite of the short sentences, small paragraphs and the everyday language, it was not that easy a reading.

The book successfully brings out the need for our spirituality to be nourished and sustained regularly by the celebration of the Liturgy. One needs to be present at the Eucharist with one's receptivity and in touch with one's own brokenness. Liturgy is a golden event in which imagination has to play a vital role but the experience of the believer is indeed real. This book is helpful to the faithful to internalize the Gospel spirituality celebrated in the Eucharist. It would provide assistance to the presider-homilist as well as to the men and women in the pew.

A Good Locator of Paul
Ben Witherington makes a strong contribution to the field of scholarship on Galatians. Witherington shows two main strengths in this commentary. First, he makes a strong case for an early dating of Galatians, placing this polemical book solidly before the Jerusalem council. Second, he brings his rhetorical skill to the text, and creates a first-rate rhetorical framework for the letter in a remarkably readable effort. There is room to disagree with Witherington on his conclusions, especially on his early dating of Galatians, and the amount of historicity he places with Acts. Yet, one appreciates the strength of his argument, and the flow of his presentation.

Keeping Spirituality Simple
This book has done for spiritual guidance what few others have done -- keep the pathway simple. Having read many books dealing with the inherent but too often untapped power that dwells within every human being, I credit author Ferrini with the ability to bring that power into understanding. Usually I'm hesitant to use the word "surrender" as readily as he does, but in the context presented it makes complete sense and I find it accceptable. Persons familiar with the complext "Course in Miracles" -- that mainstay of many New Thought religious studies -- will find Grace Unfolding an easier approach to some of the Miracles concepts. Although the book is short and can be a quick read, its chapters should be absorbed slowly and thoughtfully -- there's much more savor and understanding than first meets the eye and mind!

Get real!
Get real! Read a realistic book. The book Grand Avenue is as real as it could get. It is a book that contains many stories that are linked together. These stories all have many different characters and take place in many different settings. They are so real that a variety of people could relate to them. It is full of anger, lust, personality, and distruction. The anger of one child leads to destruction when she burns down a barn because she couldn't save one horse. Another girl's relationship ended when she made a bad choice. It ends with plenty of life-long lessons that will capture the reader's heart. One reason that Grand Avenue is so easy to connect to is that the time period is so close to ours. The setting takes place in many different areas. Even though they aren't described well there are so many that the reader has to be able to connect to one. By connect , I mean if it sounds recognizable the reader can experience it more. Setting may not be described well, but it is still an important and large part of the book. The main themes are anger, lust, and destruction. The theme creates a world of suspense that is drowning in dangers. The dangers are not just imaginary. These dangers are ones that people have been victims of in the real world, too. One girl is determined to save a horse that she loves dearly. She can't save it so out of anger she burns down the barn that the horse had once been kept in. Another girl knows she's in love, but by making a bad choice her relationship ends. The characters in Grand Avenue have to learn important lessons the hard way. One can avoid the pain the characters go through and still learn life-long lessons, while reading Grand Avenue. Think about your relationships and problems. Do you want some help fixing them or making them better? Let my friends from Grand Avenue help. They'll do the dirty work for you. Make your life a little easier and have fun reading Grand Avenue.

eerie picture book
Grandad's gifts is a picture book for primary-school aged kids (especially if they like Gary Crew's scarey picture books). Peter Goldthorpe's illustrations are amazing.

There's a secret cupboard, a creepy voice, and an incredibly weird fox. Shane discovers Grandad's gifts, but I had some trouble following exactly what was going on.

Reliving The Great Galveston Disaster
Galveston Island, Texas - A massive hurricane strikes the Island on a Saturday afternoon in September 1900. Paul Lester, along with an introduction by Richard Spillane, Editor "Galveston Tribune" and Associated Press Correspondent who survived the storm in Galveston, give eyewitness accounts of the death and destruction that surround this natural disaster. Written in 1900, immediately after the storm passes, and with the sensational overtones so prevalent of newspapers then, this book engrosses the reader and enables one to experience along with victims, their overpowering sufferance. Many lives were lost, many families torn apart, many children left orphaned. Paul Lester gives the thrilling accounts of heroism, and what life was really like immediately following such a life-altering event. It is amazing to read these stories, which take the reader back in time, when the Gulf Coast of Texas was a growing and thriving area of the South. The survivors must overcome their grief of losing loves ones, their shock of seeing such massive amounts of dead bodies everywhere, to clean up the remnants of a city that was completely destroyed in one night. Each chapter gives eyewitness accounts by many different Galvestonians, visitors and tourist that were there on that fateful Saturday. The stories by outsiders and various government agencies that had to overcome washed out wagon bridges, and railroad bridges to bring the island city much needed food, water, medical supplies, disinfectants and manpower. The tales of having thousands of bodies that were dumped at sea only to wash back up on the beaches the next day. The loss of everything these people owned and their survival is indeed thrilling and fascinating. The spirited stories and accounts of the destruction that tore through the state of Texas as told back in 1900 makes one shudder. There are old pictures that show the actual unbelievable devastation and ruin of this thriving island city. The gross and unimaginable stench of death, visions of total desolation and ruin are all described in this captivating book.

The Great Getty: The Life and Loves of J. Paul Getty--Richest Man in the World

The Great Getty is a Great Read
Robert Lenzer does an excellent job of showing every side of a very multi-faceted man. J. Paul Getty may be described as a horrible father, an unsurpassed lover, a great business man or a paranoid eccentric. Lenzer finds a way to portray all these descriptions and more in just 235 pages. Lenzer does not drag down the conversational tone with technical business terms. Although business was of central importance to Getty and, as such, of central importance to the book, Lenzer throws in pieces about Getty's personal life to keep the reader entertained.
My sole complaint is that sometimes Lenzer appears to be stretching to make the book longer. Many times Lenzer goes off on tangents, describing a particular favorite beach of Getty's, or giving the history of some of Getty Oil Company's rivals. It seems that Lenzer does not feel he has enough primary source material about Getty alone, so he makes the most of the sources he does have.
Despite the stretching, The Great Getty provides a few hours of entertainment (and often shock) as Lenzer shows us just what it might be like to walk in the shoes of the richest man in the world.
