Harry and Hortense at Hormone High
I read Harry and Hortense at Hormone High by Paul Zindel. I have read other book by him such as Loch, The Doom Stone, and raptor. I gave it a 3 because it was a little slow, with our much suspense. Most parts are very well described and tell a lot about future events. I recommend this book for people who like a book without a lot of characters and a simple plot.

Pretty Good Book
I am a faithful Zindel reader and enjoyed reading this book. Although it is not my favorite book of his, it still is a touching story. Harry and Hortense will leave you smiling as you read this book...

Harry Hooper: An American Baseball Life (Sport and Society)

The book is as boring as Hooper was.
I suppose that when your subject was notoriously known for being boring and bland, it would be a monumental effort to write without getting caught in the web. Sadly, and despite Paul Zingg's best efforts, This book only solidifies the obvious...Harry Hooper, although a very good ballplayer, was also a very boring ballplayer. This was a difficult read because interest was so sporadic. Lets face it, Hooper is boring and so is the book. No fault of the author, moreso it is the subject.

Harry Hooper
Very informative and very interesting account of the life of Harry Hooper (my great-grandfather). This book helps put into perspective just how significant Harry's life was for the development of baseball in America. It was full of lots of facts that brought to life the greatest baseball players in the early 20th century. It is more than just baseball, but an account of one man's life. I would recommend this book for anyone who is a baseball fan.

Interesting, but full of errors.
Who wants to use old heroes in his/her own campaign? Some characters might be usable as Major NPCs (as a rulers). I hope that for the next update, writers should READ the novels and AD&D rules before making something. Who have ever heard Drizzt using his ranger spells, even though he cartainly has level and wisdom for that. Drizzt also knows Dragon lore - profiency. Druids cannot be any other alignment than TN, even in Moonsheas. Why has Flight Arrow been marked as a weapon profiency? Etc, Etc... thats why only 3 stars.

Sweet water and light laughter!

Show me better pics
This little book was very good, just like most other guidebooks put out by TSR, but one major irritant never failed to irk me: those often ugly sketches of the npc. They may have actually chosen the worst ones I could envision. I'm mainly speaking of R.A. Salvatore's own cast: Drizzt, Catti-brie, etc. If they would ever do an expanded or revised version, my only request would be to get only the very best images available, or to simply create new ones, because when I see something that totally disagrees with what I'm reading, it can be . . . unpleasant

The History of the Church in the Carpathian Rus'

Oddly centered account.
The Carpatho-Russians were Orthodox from their conversion to Christianity as a result of the missionary efforts of the Eastern Roman missionary brothers Sts. Cyril and Methodius c. A.D. 800 until the creation of the Eastern European Unia in the Early Modern period through the military aggression of Poland-Lithuania (at the beck and call of the Roman Papacy). However, there now are a considerable number of them who have made their way back to the One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic Church -- the Orthodox Church. For one who wants the perspective of the Uniates, this book is a good one; for people who want the story of the miraculous return of some Carpatho-Russians to Holy Orthodoxy, try _Good Victory - Metropolitan Orestes Chornock & the American Carpatho - Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Diocese_ (1985) by Lawrence Barriger. This volume, on the other hand, is written by an apologist for the Unia -- the Eastern European version of the Spaniards' mistreatment of the natives of Latin America.

The Shadow People
Fr. Pekar gives a stunning and vibrant view of a turbulent history of a people who have been up till now relegated to the shadows of both European and Catholic history. He traces the story of the Carpatho-Rus as both an historian and as a theologian, carefully sorting and placing together those forces that helped to shape their identity as well as their survival against numerous odds.I highly recommend this book for those who wish to know the struggles of these people as well as for those who seek to understand the true universality of the Catholic Church.

Homoaffectionalism: Male Bonding from Gilgamesh to the Present

Homosexuality under another name and not true male bonding
My Objective view of the book is that it is well written and well researched. Hardman, the author, sites many examples throughout time which are relevant and which elaborate on his view of homoaffection. The term homoaffectionalism is described as such in the preface of his book: Same-sex relationships which do not necessarily involve homosexual sex acts, but do involve strong emotional bonding, which may or may not include sexual conduct. The emphasis is on affection and bonding regardless of any carnal involvement. As defined, it recognizes the phenomemon on mutual altruism between individuals of the same gender and recognizes the basis of mutual support, loyalty, and cooperation needed (in our view) to allow civilization to develop.

My personal view of this book is that it was disappointing. I was looking for a purely fraternal, non-homosexual friendship centered work. I hoped that it might attempt to explain why men in fraternities, and men in the sports world without reserve sometimes: slap each other on the butt, think its fun to go streaking (run naked)in the streets and why we dare yank each others pants down to their ankles to embarrass them. This book is not a 'how to book on ways to bond' but more an illustration throughout the ages of various societies and their tolerance quotient for homosexuality. It does not attempt to explain what a healthy bond is or talk about the father/son dynamic. However it gives the reaction to homosexality through the eyes of: The Ancient Greeks, The Romans, The Hebrews, The Egyptians, and its influence in the military.

very recommendable book
This is a very interesting book to read for everybody including young students. However, I wonder why the author didn't comment Japanese traditional male-love, since after the Ancient Greek only Japanese had enhanced the value of male/male eroticism much higher than the heterosexuality and admired the male bonding as the way of samurai so called "BIDO=the beautiful way" or "SHUDO/WAKASHUDO=the way of the male-youths". I recommend two books "MALE COLOR" by Gary P. Leupp and "The Love of The Samurai" by T. Watanabe & J. Iwata.

Nice book, but needs a little more depth to it
A good basic book to keep with you if your travel with out much planning. My only complaint about the book is that, after spending the night at several locations mention in the book, I got the feeling that not every location write up included a night's stay by the author. Just my two pennies

Hostels France & Italy
This hosteling guide is well-organized with accurate descriptions of each hostel. It includes ratings on noise, cleanliness, safety and available facilities of each hostel. It is excellent for both first time hostellers and experienced travellers alike.

Human Materialism: A Model for Sociocultural Systems and a Strategy for Analysis

Why didn't he just call this book Material Culturalism?
Oh I get it, the author thought we would think he'd come up with a "new" anthropological theory if only he changed the name a little and then went on at great lenghts in the text to discuss differences between his new theory, and the old theory he is replacing. Yeah, that ought to do it. Right? No problemo, I'm sure no one will pick up on this.

Another View
Amazon's only other review of this book is written so as to make me wonder whether the "reader" actually read the book or not. Human Materialism is not Material Culturalism (Whatever that is.) It is also not Cultural Materialism, the paradigm developed by anthropologist Marvin Harris. I presume that the "reader" was referring to cultural materialism when he or she made the misleading reference. Although HM bears some resemblance to Harris' model it is significantly different.

Magnarella observed that the causal explanations of certain cultural phenomenon by reference to purely material factors without regard for the effects of key human actors was wanting in explanatory power. Magnarella, without falling into the old "great man" trap profers that key persons in positions of political and economic power can have a profound effect on the precise outcomes of specific socio-cultural events. Magnarella places these key individuals directly into the infra-structural component of his model.

The "reader" also makes poor reference to HM being proposed as a "new anthropological" theory. HM is a model for anthropological research to be used in the development of explanatory theories. The model is not the theory itself although it is founded upon material theory. The "reader" also makes reference to Magnarella's going to great lengths to discuss the difference between HM and (presumably) CM. Exactly! This is precisely what Magnarella should do. He is exhibiting willingness for his model to be compared with and to compete against other causal models of current use in anthropology. The "reader" does not exhibit any understanding of the goals and processes of anthropological research. Further, the general tenor of the "reader's" comments border on ad hominem. This is unacceptable in academic practice.

I encourage further readers to ignore the earlier review and make their minds up for themselves. HM is a welcome addition to the body of literature in anthropology and should be an essential read for anyone interested in anthropological history, method and theory.

Doesn't reflect contemporary teaching
Understand that TAN books has two primary markets: Those who are interested in texts of historical significance and those who believe that the church should not change its approach to the world as the world changes. This book is aimed at the second group. The central premise of this book is that the primary purpose of marriage is procreation and the raising of children, a view that the church developed in the 1920s when it first attempted to formulate a theology of marriage and had shed by the 1970s.

Short, clear and precise...
Having been recently engaged, I've been searching for many books to cover at least the fundamental principals and attitudes of marriage. 'Husband and Wife' provides both.
If you are seeking selfish gains in marriage, you will find that this book will leave you disturbed and most likely questioning your own aims.
If you truly seek the truth of what marriage is about, yours and your spouse's place, mind, attitudes, duties, what's right and wrong, this book will provide all the answers clearly and to the point. Not one to beat around the bush, you'll get all your answer from only 90 pages. A classic.

Interresting and thought provoking
Many controversial modern parenting issues explored in an honest and sometimes humerous way. The many chapters are like a collection of short articles on various topics of concern to parents. I agreed with some things, disagreed with others but overall found it a worthwhile read.

My affirmation made easy!
This book is so wonderful and has really helped me. I often forget to remember that I am the parent and my child is the child. How often do we find ourselves engaging is "childish" behavior with our children!? I didn't really read this book all that closely, but I find it really helpful to just leave it out on the coffee table as a silent, albiet wordy, reminder: I am the parent and you (well, my child) is the child.
