Globalization in Question: The International Economy and the Possibilities of Governance

Antidote for the globalist myth
The authors make this "Globalization In Question" a great antidote for people (especially in the Business and Administration area) that can't stop repeating that "the world is globalized, the world is globalized" like parrots. It's very pleasing to have some kind of skepticism about this whole discussion. In countries of the Third World, this talk about globalization is particularly dangerous since glued to it comes the neoliberal talk. And don't be scared by all the "economics". After reading this one, I can garantee that you will pay more attention to the books you're buying about the "global world".

Comprehensive discussion of Globalization
The signal to noise ratio in the discussion of Globalization makes it hard to sort out what is really going on. Much of the discussion comes from anecdotal evidence or from a particular point of view. Of course, it is impossible to be completely objective about anything, but since the mission of the World Bank, the publishers of this study, is "a world free of poverty" it's point of view at least attempts to not view globalization from the perspective of any particular nation or group and to represent different views.

The result is a strongly documented case for the beneficial effects of our increasingly globalized world. This books is a good reference books with facts about the distribution of income, poverty rates throughout the world, changes in GDP over time and other things that are frequently misrepresented by anti-globalization folks.

The book covers many things that are in books like The Lexus and the Olive Tree, A Future Perfect and so on about how the legal and social structure affect investment and growth. This book references the original studies and is a good starting point for research.

It also points out that the forces towards globalization, better communication, transportation and financial markets can easily be stopped in their tracks by trade wars as happened in the 1930's so educating oneself about the benefits of an integrated world economy can help make sure we do not have a repeat of the Great Depression.

Zimbabwe
This is an exceptionally well written tour guide book for Zimbabwe. I really enjoyed the photographs and the maps of the regions of Zimbabwe. The maps are very detailed depending on which area you plan to visit. It talks about the people, the climate, the language, and the way of life. I especially enjoyed the historical background of the country. It brings you up to date with what is happening now in the country. It tells the specifics for traveling by air, rail, and car. Each section is divided up by a specific part of the country. Listed are accomodations, tours and excursions, where to eat, health hazards and annual events and useful telephone numbers.I highly recommend this as a take along for your trip to Zimbabwe. Enjoy the book before you travel.

Glory, God, and Gold: A Narrative History.

When is a history book not a history book?
Paul Wellman's "God, Glory and Gold", the three reasons why the Spaniards came to the New World, is a marvelous history book that should be read by anyone who lives in the Southwest or the West. Besides being historically accurate in even minor details, Mr. Wellman is the only author of history who makes it read like a fast-paced novel. His love for the Southwest and the West is evident! Read it - you won't be disappointed - and, you'll have a new appreciation for the "growing pains" of the United States west of the Mississippi.

An Astounding book
This is a superb collection of poems by one of the world's truly great poets. This is one of the better translations I've read with the authors doing an admirable job of turning Celan's German into a very readable English that still manages to capture Celan's haunting style.

Enhanced with additional technical illustrations and photos
An outstanding addition to Kalmbach's acclaimed "Classic Trains" series, GM's Geeps: The General Purpose Diesels is a beautiful, highly recommended photographic tribute to the first generation of bidirectional, accessible, all-purpose diesel locomotives as they plied North American rails from the end of World War II down through the early 1960s. An informative text is enhanced with additional technical illustrations and photos that will enable the dedicated railroad buff to spot the subtle differences between various production models of GP (for General Purpose) engines manufactured from 1949 to late 1963.

Kingsland's "Gnosis" ahead of its time
Having studied approximately 30 volumes on gnosticism and early Christianity (all of the others having been written since publication of the Nag Hammadi texts), I was astounded to find that a British theosophist, writing in 1936, had reached conclusions concerning human spirituality that contemporary writers are only beginning to approach.

Using meticulous, literal translations of scripture from ancient Hebrew and Aramaic, Kingsland demonstrates that the Bible did not reveal a new theology, but merely brought the teachings of the ancient Egyptians and wisdom of the Upanishads to a Hebrew audience.

Kingsland shows that Judaism and Christianity did not break new ground in monotheism, and that the term itself is a misnomer. (A literal translation of Genesis, for instance, refers to {"him, the gods" -- a deliberate ambiguity demonstrating that the divine is neither singular nor plural, but infinite and beyond definition.) He was also a fervent believer in the "power to move mountains." And, while giving no evidence that he had (or had not!) achieved mastery of the physical realm through his own spiritual development, he leaves the reader convinced that the powers attributed to Jesus are within the reach of anyone.

A must read for any seeker of the higher spiritual truths! If you read only one book on "gnosis," start here!

Cute little book for girls
This tiny, fun book is filled with catchy chants and cheers for young girls. Some of them are old and familiar while some are quite original. For girls wanting to boost the spirits of their team, family, or friends, this cute book works! It also comes with team tattoos, a keychain, and name tag.
