Excellent book for children
Set in England, the story starts with Patrick not really enjoying homelife or his school teacher. He would like his family, his teacher, even his dog to change. He meets an oriental gentleman who invented the reversing peppermint.

The book is very well written, like most good books, with humour for adults to enjoy as well as the children. I have read the story to a class room of 4th Grade children who have sat listening intently - not the norm!

An insightful look at the REAL history of Native Americans.
Paul A. W. Wallace offers us an unbiased account of the history of the Native American people of Pennsylvania. Each chapter made me want to learn more about the individual tribe that was represented in its pages and inspired me to continue reading. Mr. Wallace does not ever compare the European settlers with the Indians and say that one was more savage than the other. He merely points out that the Native American people were more intelligent than what the history books would have us believe. Paul Wallace introduces us to an innocent culture and guides us through the necessary metamorphosis of a land besieged by "conquerors." If you're interested in the plight of Native Americans, or in the history of Pennsylvania, this book should become the keystone of your library!

Indigenous People's Rights in Australia, Canada & New Zealand

Indigenous Peoples' Rights
If you are concerned to understand Indigenous Peoples' Rights from a perpsective that distinguishes an historical, cultural and legal issues and developments, buy this book. It is a carefully edited and well organised collection in which the 20 contributors explore commonalities of experiences under colonialism and social and legal moves towards self-determination in countries with a similar legal and constitutional history. However the collection does not gloss over differences in indenous peoples' experiences within these jurisdictions, and this aspect not only provides stark and thoughtful contrasts, it exposes ongoing problems for governance and social relations.

Paul Havemann provides several chapters that comprise an historical and thematic framework for the close analysis in the six sections that cover: Public International Law; Sovereignty, Self-Determination, and Coexistence; the impact of colonial settlement in the Anglo-Commonwealth; Indigenous Peoples' Rights Claims; the relationships between criminalisation of indigenous peoplss and colonisation; administering citizenship and self-determination and constitutional issues arising from indigenous rights claims. In each of these sections, well known writers including Ranginui Walker, Marcia Langton, Alan Ward and Paul Chartrand analyse the specificities of the experiences of indigenous peoples in their national contexts.

What is especially satisfying (and challenging) about this collection is its attention to detailed analysis, lack of generality and avoidance of stereotyping and puffery. Although there is not an exhaustive coverage of the heterogeneity of indigenous viewpoints, the collection avoids caricature of key differences and demands the reader pay attention to historical complexity in both indigenous narratives as well as the contested nature of law as it's developed in each context. The collection requires time and thought to fully digest, since its multi-dimensional methodology has the reader aware throughout of many further research possibilities opened up by the questions raised. It is an exciting and intelligent contribution to debates about 'rights', 'indigeniety', 'self-determination' and international law.

A must for knowledge workers!
This book should be 'the bible' for everyone involved in knowledge management processes. Holland, as one of the complexity theory founders, decribes the essentials of how complex adaptive rules, in relation to the variability of the environment, determine knowledge dynamics and learning capabilities.

Key message of the book is the way that processes of induction, both cognitive and subcognitive, determine rule making, rule adaptation and environment modeling.

With this work Holland (et al.) was the first to close the gap between cognition, complex adaptive systems and knowledge processing. He also provides a sound computational base for the theories presented, opening possibilities for implementation of 'the induction theory' in real world applications.

Another "must buy" for the Indy Racing League fan !
The 1998 Indy Review is a nice follow-up to the 1997 version. This book contains photos, highlights and statistics to every race in the 1998 IRL season. I felt the statistics sections were not as complete as the 1997 version, but it was not enough to take away a star. Another great book for Indy fans !

Complex causality: why people are really at risk for disease
Finally Dr. Farmer couples his lucid historical, political and economic analyses of the conditions that put the poor at risk for bad health outcomes, with a plainly indignant calling out of healthcare professionals and healthcare organizations to make honest efforts to understand and remedy conditions which would never be tolerated among the well off in Western nations. In his goundbreaking, earlier books, "AIDS and Accusations," and "The Uses of Haiti," Dr. Farmer matter of factly discusses the global and local structural conditions and misrepresentations which led to the spread of disease and persistent, dismal health conditions in Haiti. In "Infections and Inequality," Dr. Farmer adds moral overtones to incisive, sociopolitical analysis and his characteristic accounts of individuals suffering from disease. The book consequently provides a powerful reflection from a man who has worked in some of the world's poorest regions on what the benefits of medical technology mean for people who have not traditionally had access to them. A powerful, informative read that clearly reflects the years of experience of a physician who has wrestled with the global responsibility of caring for the those who are worst off. An obligatory read for anyone even thinking of working for the impoverished of the world.

Inflections of the Pen: Dash and Voice in Emily Dickinson

Elegant and intelligent writing match Dickinson's own voice
Inflections of the Pen, although a scholarly work, makes fascinating reading even for those of us not particularly schooled in the mystical work of Emily Dickinson. Crumbley combines masterfully poetic detective work with his own elegance of language to create a piece of work that both honors its subject and offers a first-ever look inside the mind of an ever-elusive writer. Even those untrained in the academics of poetry will find entrancement here. Additionally, I found it inspired me to look at other poets' work with a refreshed and inquiring eye. Thank you,Dr. Crumbley, for this remarkable tome.

Informal Reading Inventory Review
I have been using the Burns and Roe Reading Inventory for 6 years. As a Primary Reading teacher, I find it a very useful tool for classroom teachers to use for providing instruction at a child's point of need. I also use the assessments as benchmarks, to show growth in reading skills at various points in the year. This inventory is easy to use, and is very accurate.
