A contemporary intellectual reads the New Testament
A friend suggested that I read this book because it dealt with the problem of how to regard the New Testament as a book one reads. We respect it, but we have to read it as we read any other book. Hence, the title. I have not sat down to read or study the New Testament in almost thirty years because it came with too much baggage: respect for authority, accept but do not evaluate, revere but do not question. What Beeching does is to apply all the modes of contemporay critical reading plus exceptional knowledge of biblical analysis to make one feel comfortable with this important book. I was fascinated to be invited to see the places where things do not fit together, where things do not work out, to discover that certain passages were addressed to political situations in the first century and have to be read that way. I also appreciated his sensitivity to the historical consequences of the New Testament's treatment of Jews. The result is that I am now re-reading the New Testament and am feeling free study it as I study other books. I wish that I had been taught to read it this way years ago. By approaching it as Beeching suggests, I can appreciate it better. Beeching has enriched my life, and I am grateful to him for doing so.

terse
i am a first year medical student in philadelphia and i have been looking through various microbiology texts. the singleton books is interesting reading and the greatest strength it has exists in its condensed writing. it's short and sweet, but it is about as detailed as a piece of cardboard. good for general bacteriology- even for students who dont know much about biology in general. not a medical text in any way.

The Bakke Case : Quotas in College Admissions
I'm using this book for a term paper in school. It gives a lot of information on Affirmative Action and ties in the Bakke Case. Not only did it begin with the Civil Rights Period, but it went back very far historically to the beginning of Slavery. It is written in a very chronilogial order, which is very helpful for notes and understanding the judicial process behind this case. The information on Bakke and the other people involved in very good. Arguments are made both for and against Affirmative Action. There is no bias. It is written very clearly and it is really not possilbe to get caught up in all the legal terms. I would recommend this book to anyone studying or interested in Affirmative Action and/or the Bakke Case, although it may be a little young for some.

Superb photos of bamboo. Could use more of Crouzet's text.
The photos are excellent. They are the way collectors view bamboo. There is a close examination of the details that make bamboos lovely horticultural subjects. Crouzet's text is fine and offers much practical quidance and advice on the choice and culture of bamboo. The person new to bamboo will need a bit more.

World Premiere of Bandanna on 2/25/99 at UT Austin
The world premiere of Bandanna at the University of Texas Opera Theatre (Robert DeSimone, Diretor) combined the music of Daron Aric Hagen and words of Paul Muldoon into a two-act opera that reveals the "basic tension between characters who can accept that love is earned or is temporary, and those who demand that love be absolute." The music was wonderful, the scoring/orchestration magnificent. The performance a pleasure. The topic relevent. I hope this text stimulates further performances of the opera.

Hail to the Chiefs Hailing Baseball
For those who have wondered about the tradition of our nation's leader throwing out the first pitch of the season, here is your answer.

Authors Mead and Dickson have compiled this entertaining look at how each president, beginning with one of the most UNathletic chief executives, William Howard Taft, has related to the national pastime. For example, while rough- and-ready Teddy Roosevelt was not much of a fan, Franklin Roosevelt was instrumental in keeping baseball going during the dark years of World War II.

Dwight D. Eisenhower was a pretty fair ballhand, a minor leaguer who found greener pastures in military and political pursuits. And Richard Nixon was considered by some to be an astute student of the game.

The President's Game is well-illustrated with seldom-seen photos and would be a welcome addition to both the baseball and the political science fan's libary.

BASEX : a simple language and compiler for 8080 systems

Basex
The book explains how to set up Basex on a z80 or 8080 processor. It is actually a very good language, an inline interpreted compiler!. It works by converting commands into calls to a list of subroutines stored at the beginning of the language.

This program is fast, at least 3 times faster than most compiled basics but then it does have some restrictions. One nice feature is that whilst any program is stored at the bottom of memory upwards, a library of variables and their values as well as the location of labelled program subroutines builds down from memory, these can be examined after program execution, handy for debugging.

All in all the book is very well written and includes a complete listing of the Basex language ( the compiler was written in Basex). A hex listing is included (which is how I typed it manually into my system), also included is a bar-code page for those lucky enough to be able to read it. All in all a good effort with my only criticism being that the section that deals with the library structure is a little hard to follow and not explained too well.

A very good language that would appeal to a anyone building a small memory system or perhaps who wants to write fast programs (this language can deep up with video speed).

A decent student text, although dated some.
Overall gives a good run down on biotechnology. I do find some of the topics over simplified and I do find the general material somewhat dated. Still, not a bad addition to your library.

A good presentation of basic classical controls
This book is a good introduction to control systems, suitable for the undergraduate level. It covers everything from LaPlace transforms of physical systems to state feedback and PLC. It also contains several chapters on nonlinear phenomena and their analysis tools. Presentation of the material is very understandable with many formulas and equations. Examples abound, and many practical applications are presented. Basic Matlab coding for control systems is integrated, and several problems refer to Matlab. The major drawback is that this book does not cover digital control. Overall this book is a good introductory reference for classical control.
