Wonderful Eskimo stories from Northwest Alaska

This terrific little book tells a mix of traditional folktales and the author's own experiences as an Inupiat Eskimo of Northwest Alaska. Paul Green lived from the end time of the traditional Eskimo culture ca. 1900 into the 1970s and seems to have been cheerfully comfortable and confident in both. A plus: the book is written in Village English, the curious and charming dialect spoken by older Alaska Natives all over the state, even today. Another plus: sketches by George Ahgupuk, a famous Eskimo pen-and-ink artist.

A book you shouldn't miss!

Lavina is a ten-year-old girl who lives at the Bosque Ranch in the Arizona territory in the early 1900's. Her mother died, and her father is sending her to live in California with her aunt. When she arrives, she steps into a whole different world. Sometimes her Aunt Agnes reminds her of her father. Her aunt has a daughter named Maude, and Maude has a daughter, Aggie, who is eight. It's hard to get along with Aggie, but Lavina makes friends at school. Lavina has a fight with her aunt one night, and she plans to run away in the morning, but something big happens before she gets the chance. This is a well-written book.

So few humorists these days, esp. golf humorists, are able to come up with a new, fresh, inventive approach to their subject. On this point, deVere scores a perfect ten! Like all the books in this series, this book is just poking fun at the university identified in the "303 reasons why I hate xxx" title. Don't take it too seriously, I don't.

A Family Curse

I really enjoyed this book. It was very cool to read. I was glad it was a Christian based book because my mom doesn't allow me to read the Harry Potter books. Parts of the book were kinda spooky. It was a great book to read on the airplane. It made the time go by fast and kept me entertained.
