A much more satisfying read than "Red Diapers", Mr. Mishler takes a personal, yet non-subjective view in his writing, lending a nice flow to the research compiled by various other historians. The bibliography alone is worth the purchase.

Reason & Violence is a compendium of three of Sartre's works published betw. 1950 & 1960. Saint Genet was the 1952 bio. in which Sartre mused that playwright-pervert-pickpocket Jean Genet had achieved something approximating a psychoanalytic cure by becoming what others said he was & producing similar fictional characters. Laing & Cooper also reduced to a few pages Search for a Method & Critique of Dialectical Reason, writings which shaped in part Sartre's philosophy during his last 30 years.
The intro noted that they were dealing with key ideas here; moreover, none of these works had been translated into English at the time L&C tackled them. Despite brevity (compared with the originals), this is often difficult material to wade thru. The editing leaves much to be desired, & the language is frequently awkward & stilted. But it remains an original & a highly literate work of first magnitude.
After all, who could write this today? The dung heap of pop culturalists all want to write fiction with a message. They want to write Moby Dick while they lecture Ahab on his political incorrectitude. They want to put Holden Caulfield in a 12-step program & scold his parents. But they lack any sense of drama or character development, so they write Winning thru Intimidation, The Se7en Habits, Cultural Literacy, & The End of History: metaphorical accounts of modern society. And if they're not writing for mass market, then it's for each other & more govt. grants to research, say, prison conditions for Mary, Queen of Scots.
Marshall McLuhan supposedly wrote that schizophrenia was a necessary consequence of literacy. If that's true, our pop commentators are safely sane.
Not so Laing & Cooper. Reason & Violence is maddening in its content. In a foreward, Sartre himself praises them for seeking an existentialist explanation to the mentally sick. And we shall not soon see its (or their) like again.
therefore you should read this book for sure.

I would suggest a rewrite that would include more countries, and would treat all countries with greater objectivity.

Ever since early 1999 it seems like more and more Christians, especially leaders, have been falling sexually. This book provides a comprehensive look at the process of nurturing, comforting, and bringing Christians back into wholeness. The major strength in this book is that it was written by people who experienced it. There are 6 authors. 1 sexually fell, 1 was their spouse, and the other 4 were part of the "restoration team". This book was written by people who have experience in this area. This is basically a detailed explanation of what they did and what worked for them.
This kind of information is a must for all those in Christian leadership and for those who minister to others. This book is very practical and easy to understand. The author's openness and transparency brings this real topic closer to the heart of the reader.

The biggest plus, it was short (211 pages) and to the point. Not filled with mindless babble about every little personal detail of the man's life, like you see some biographers write.
The book also shows, in Thelen's opinion, how La Follette was really out to be get re-elected, in the earliest years of his political life, rather than become the insurgent leader of the people. According to Thelen that came later, not from the onset.
The biggest minuses were that it focused way to much on the progressive insurgence movement. While this was a major part of La Follette's life it was not everything! Some of Thelen's views are also very controvesal and subject for much debate.
If your looking for a quick overview of progressivism, insurgency, and Robert La Follette then this is the book for you. If you are looking for details you will be disappointed.

Unfortunately, despite the incredible subject, MESSIAH is not an in-depth portrait of the man. What it is, is a blow-by-blow account of his horrific actions as a self-professed 'Moses', who ruled his followers in Quebec with sickening brutality.
Theriault and his 'family' of assorted followers, set up a camp in Quebec, believing his rants about the Second coming and the end of the world. While they may have envisioned an idyllic life in the woods, what resulted from their isolation was Theriault's increasingly bizarre and harmful state-of-mind. He took his disciples' wives as his own, forbidding the men to ever touch them. He fathered many children with all of them. He forbid them to eat, while he grew quite large. In drunken rages, he would mutilate them, performing 'operations' without anesthetic. He amputated one woman's arm. Another woman died as a result of his 'surgery'. He kept pieces of her in a jar. And this is not nearly as bad as it got. There is a two page 'list' of various other punishments he bestowed upon his disciples that is the most sickening thing I have ever read.
MESSIAH never becomes a tabloid-style report, which is to its credit. There's nothing sensationalistic about the presentation. And you would be hard pressed to make a boring book out of the subject matter. But it is simply reporting the facts. It never really succeeds in making the reader understand either Roch or his followers. Why would they put up with his insane ways? This went on for YEARS.
SAVAGE MESSIAH is still worth reading. I have no doubt that Roch Theriault (now in prison, although I believe he's up for parole soon) is one of the most evil people to ever walk the face of the Earth. But the book offers little insight into why he acted in this way, or more importantly, why anyone would believe him. Read it for the knowledge that true evil does exist. Don't read it if you're looking for an explanation why.
