Psychology, 5th Edition
This book was one of the worst psychology books I've read. It has a very...Ameri-centric view of psychology, and the author tells horrible anecdotes and even has his baby pictures in the book. Have fun with this one in class, kids.

Informative text encorages independent learning
This textbook is a broad introduction to the various lines of research and theory comprising the modern field of psychology. Besides being readable, the novel approach to study exercises, such as "Interactivities," (Exercises relating to the Internet) make the text a valuable resource.

Man the pumps, it's too thin to shovel
It's quite true that the authors' knowledge of Hollywood film history is encyclopedic, and this alone makes the book an indispensable reference to the stories behind the stories of innumerable great and less-than-great films. Described elsewhere as "the Abbott and Costello of film studies," these two spew forth gallons of embarrassingly wrongheaded and outmoded leftie humbug; nevertheless this is exactly what makes their work so useful. Yes, all those "paranoid" right-wingers were right all along about the real motives and agendas in Hollywood "back then." And not much has changed...it's still "Fantasyland" in more ways than one, which ought to be an important clue to the etiology of leftism. My only real objection to this work is that being so thoroughly deluded by their own political fantasies as they are, the authors attempt to claim almost everyone in Hollywood as a real, potential, or lapsed leftie, whether or not there was ever much actual evidence of it...a kind of triple-reverse McCarthyism. One final tip: buy this book second-hand. I'd hate to think I'd given one red cent (no pun intended) to either of these authors or their publisher.

Encyclopedic
This is a good look at the often ignored early radicals of hollywood. It gives a good history of the time leading up to and the aftermath of the Blacklist and it's antisemitic tendencies. Paul Buhle, et al seem to have an encyclopedic knowledge of the subject but I found their method of sharing the information a little overwhelming and pedantic. Every page is dotted with references to very obscure films, many with alternative titles, that are impossible to find. It's difficult to envision many of the situations and influential aspects of the films when you can find no more information on them much less see them. Taking all of the authors information on faith is not the usual film studies method. In contrast to many books about hollywood this one dosn't have many salacious details about harlets and moguls. I would recommend this book to serious film/hollywood history buffs only.

The word processor did it.
"Raising Reds" must be read to help us understand how the new left evolved from the old left. The Communist Children's Movement was required to counterbalance conservative public schools and powerful conservative after school activities like the Boy Scouts. But it is a difficult book to read because the editing was obviously done by someone with a limited public school education. It is hard to believe a university press, Columbia University no less, would put this product on the street. I cannot imagine what kind of grade I would have received if I had turned in a term paper with this many errors. Parts of this book are almost incoherent. Those associates and the "anonymous reviewers" identified in the Acknowledgments that said they read and reviewed the book should be given lie detector tests.

Raising Reds, by Paul Mishler
The emphasis in this book is not as much a discussion of the various summmer camps run by left-wing organizations, but how their various political differences were expressed in their philosophy about raising children, especially in the first third of the 20th century. The author weaves the differences in their approaches with the current politics of the times, creating an interesting and unique analysis. Unfortunately, McCarthyism destroyed most of the camps, and this is about where he ends.

A much more satisfying read than "Red Diapers", Mr. Mishler takes a personal, yet non-subjective view in his writing, lending a nice flow to the research compiled by various other historians. The bibliography alone is worth the purchase.

Who could write this today?
Sartre & two British psychiatrists might seem like strange bedfellows. But Laing & Cooper took Sartre's theory of practical groups to heart & produced the still-controversial social movement called antipsychiatry.

Reason & Violence is a compendium of three of Sartre's works published betw. 1950 & 1960. Saint Genet was the 1952 bio. in which Sartre mused that playwright-pervert-pickpocket Jean Genet had achieved something approximating a psychoanalytic cure by becoming what others said he was & producing similar fictional characters. Laing & Cooper also reduced to a few pages Search for a Method & Critique of Dialectical Reason, writings which shaped in part Sartre's philosophy during his last 30 years.

The intro noted that they were dealing with key ideas here; moreover, none of these works had been translated into English at the time L&C tackled them. Despite brevity (compared with the originals), this is often difficult material to wade thru. The editing leaves much to be desired, & the language is frequently awkward & stilted. But it remains an original & a highly literate work of first magnitude.

After all, who could write this today? The dung heap of pop culturalists all want to write fiction with a message. They want to write Moby Dick while they lecture Ahab on his political incorrectitude. They want to put Holden Caulfield in a 12-step program & scold his parents. But they lack any sense of drama or character development, so they write Winning thru Intimidation, The Se7en Habits, Cultural Literacy, & The End of History: metaphorical accounts of modern society. And if they're not writing for mass market, then it's for each other & more govt. grants to research, say, prison conditions for Mary, Queen of Scots.

Marshall McLuhan supposedly wrote that schizophrenia was a necessary consequence of literacy. If that's true, our pop commentators are safely sane.

Not so Laing & Cooper. Reason & Violence is maddening in its content. In a foreward, Sartre himself praises them for seeking an existentialist explanation to the mentally sick. And we shall not soon see its (or their) like again.

Very good book
this book is a very good and philosophical book. i enjoyed it alot. anyone who is interested in Philosophy should read this book. it has many aspects that startle as you are reading it. every single paragraph has something to make you go really?

therefore you should read this book for sure.

Very incomplete book
I do not rate this book highly because it is incomplete and lacking in objectivity. For example, it does not have any information on the status of religious freedom in such countries as Canada and Australia. When discussing freedom in the USA, the author does not mention major ocurrances of religious hatred and discrimination such as the suppression of Native American spirituality, mob murder of Mormons in the early years of the LDS church, anti-Catholic riots of the 19th century, and present-day lynching, firebombing and threats which victimize Wiccans and other Neopagans.

I would suggest a rewrite that would include more countries, and would treat all countries with greater objectivity.

Best handy reference on global religious persecution
Though this book covers only roughly 80 countries and 90% of the world's population, it is an excellent reference guide for understanding religious persecution for everyone from beginners to academics. The ranking system is critical in being able to compare drastically different countries in respect to their attitudes toward religious freedom. I hope the second edition includes more countries and more essays as those included are very insightful and many of the points raised have become reality in the recent year.

The Best in Help, Hope, and Healing!
As a former fallen pastor, I wish this book would have been available a decade ago. After doing years of research and helping other religious "restorees," I believe "Restoring the Fallen" is the most comprehensive and insightful book on the market. The writers (multiple authors) convey workable truths obtained from practical experience. Every "nook and cranny" of restoration is dealt with in an easy-to-read and understandable style. These authors believe that there is life after a fall - and for religious leaders hurt by sin, it is needed help, hope and healing.

A Thorough Look at Restoring Fallen Christians
This book gives a tremendously extensive look at the process of restoring Christians that have fallen because of sexual sin.

Ever since early 1999 it seems like more and more Christians, especially leaders, have been falling sexually. This book provides a comprehensive look at the process of nurturing, comforting, and bringing Christians back into wholeness. The major strength in this book is that it was written by people who experienced it. There are 6 authors. 1 sexually fell, 1 was their spouse, and the other 4 were part of the "restoration team". This book was written by people who have experience in this area. This is basically a detailed explanation of what they did and what worked for them.

This kind of information is a must for all those in Christian leadership and for those who minister to others. This book is very practical and easy to understand. The author's openness and transparency brings this real topic closer to the heart of the reader.

Not the best biography of Robert La Follette
The are pluses and minuses to Davis Thelen's biography on Wisconsin's "Fighting Bob" La Follette.

The biggest plus, it was short (211 pages) and to the point. Not filled with mindless babble about every little personal detail of the man's life, like you see some biographers write.

The book also shows, in Thelen's opinion, how La Follette was really out to be get re-elected, in the earliest years of his political life, rather than become the insurgent leader of the people. According to Thelen that came later, not from the onset.

The biggest minuses were that it focused way to much on the progressive insurgence movement. While this was a major part of La Follette's life it was not everything! Some of Thelen's views are also very controvesal and subject for much debate.

If your looking for a quick overview of progressivism, insurgency, and Robert La Follette then this is the book for you. If you are looking for details you will be disappointed.

Rewarding and informative, well written
I found this book to be an easily readable, rewarding biography of Wisconsin Senator Robert LaFollette. This book focuses on his political beginnings as a mainstream politician and then on his shift to the left and his leadership role in the rapidly growing progressive movement from the 1890s to the 1920s. The book is fast-moving and doesn't get bogged down in the details, yet it does give the reader an extensive look at his political career and influence. The section on LaFollette's opposition to World War I and the attempt to expel him from the Senate because of that is food for thought, and that dark period in U.S. history is well worth further study (see also the cases of the IWW and Eugene Debs, and James J. Martin's book "An American Adventure in Bookburning"). LaFollette was joined in this opposition by only a tiny handful of other elected officials, such as Senator George Norris of Nebraska, and he was probably the only one who stuck to his principles and continued to criticize the war even as it was being waged. Robert LaFollette's influence in politics can still be felt today, especially in his native Wisconsin. Overall this should be a fascinating book to anybody who is interested in the history of American populist and progressive politics.

COMPARED TO HIS OTHER WORKS THIS WAS PASSIVE
This story was about a young girl that was in an orphange and had to deal with a lot at a young age. She felt deserted by her parents and found love with her roommate. Then felt abandonment after she ran away and then died. After being adopted he found security and hope and even love. Again after her adopted parents died she again felt abandoned, threatened and alone. Slowly but surely finding her way into adulthood, she found her way into a world of sex and violence. And then in the end she found a man to fall in love with her. Her name was...ELDA

One the dark side ....
Although it's not my kind of book Paul Little does some justice to those gentle lesbian feelings and devlopment in a young girl ...

There is a story to the young ELDA our heroine that seems very real life The sex is interesting and to some extent erotic in a very very gentle way ....

I guess if you like the Harlequin type romance novel with lesbian sex youll love this book ....

Rough Guide to Thailand
Fed up with the traditional Lonely Planet I turned to the Rough Guide for an alternative view. While this guide gives detailed historical/background knowledge it severely lacks in the essentials, notably transport prices and detailed maps.@There were just too many times when this book became a more of a frustration than a help. This book is best read before you go and left at home.

outstanding and thoughtful thailand guidebook
This is the first rough guide that I have used. I found it to be easy to use and very thorough in all regards. I would say that this book is a must for all visitors to Thailand.

An interesting but hardly insightful view of an evil man
I have an odd perspective when it comes to SAVAGE MESSIAH. Several years ago, I was cast in the lead role of cult leader Roch Theriault in a proposed movie adaptation of his reign of horror. The movie never got made (for reasons upon reasons), but as a result, I spent a fair amount of time doing research on cult figures. It was to my good fortune to come across SAVAGE MESSIAH in a used bookstore.

Unfortunately, despite the incredible subject, MESSIAH is not an in-depth portrait of the man. What it is, is a blow-by-blow account of his horrific actions as a self-professed 'Moses', who ruled his followers in Quebec with sickening brutality.

Theriault and his 'family' of assorted followers, set up a camp in Quebec, believing his rants about the Second coming and the end of the world. While they may have envisioned an idyllic life in the woods, what resulted from their isolation was Theriault's increasingly bizarre and harmful state-of-mind. He took his disciples' wives as his own, forbidding the men to ever touch them. He fathered many children with all of them. He forbid them to eat, while he grew quite large. In drunken rages, he would mutilate them, performing 'operations' without anesthetic. He amputated one woman's arm. Another woman died as a result of his 'surgery'. He kept pieces of her in a jar. And this is not nearly as bad as it got. There is a two page 'list' of various other punishments he bestowed upon his disciples that is the most sickening thing I have ever read.

MESSIAH never becomes a tabloid-style report, which is to its credit. There's nothing sensationalistic about the presentation. And you would be hard pressed to make a boring book out of the subject matter. But it is simply reporting the facts. It never really succeeds in making the reader understand either Roch or his followers. Why would they put up with his insane ways? This went on for YEARS.

SAVAGE MESSIAH is still worth reading. I have no doubt that Roch Theriault (now in prison, although I believe he's up for parole soon) is one of the most evil people to ever walk the face of the Earth. But the book offers little insight into why he acted in this way, or more importantly, why anyone would believe him. Read it for the knowledge that true evil does exist. Don't read it if you're looking for an explanation why.

Savage Messiah, a true account of a hypnotic man
This book was absolutely involving. It took me less than 24 hours to read, I could not put it down. The book is about Rock Theriault, and how he managed to use religion to attract and maintain a "family" commune style relationship with several women and men. It describes the abuse and torture the "family members" willingly accepted because of their belief that Rock Theriault was being used by God. It covers polygamy, alcoholism, religion (in a bizare sense) and the deep devotion his followers had for him. I enjoyed the book tremendously and strongly suggest it to anyone interested in cults or weird religious groups.
