I'm a software developer, and spent some time looking at beginner's HTML books recently because my dad asked for a recommendation. This book was my favorite of the ones I looked at.

This book is perfect for newcomers to HTML. The author focuses on all the right things, drawing special attention to common areas of confusion, such as: pairing of HTML begin/end tags; resizing images; alignment of text around images; and so on.

The book starts with super-simple samples. Note: unfortunately, there's a serious mistake in the very first HTML sample! Near the top of p. 28, where the sample has one line which says, "", cross out the "<>", so that it just says, "Hi, my name is Paul Meyers". But don't let this mistake worry you; it's the only one I saw in the book.

The author has a breezy, joking style which I think will work well for beginners, preventing them from being intimidated. But he knows what he's talking about.

This book does not talk at all about fancier stuff like Javascript, ActiveX, and so on. And I think that's a good thing. Those are deep subjects which shouldn't be discussed in a beginning book.

One other problem: The book frequently refers the reader to an accompanying web site, however, that web site is empty! As of this writing, the site says, "Under Construction." Hopefully they'll fix this soon.

The perspective of the author emphasizes contributions of French anthropologists at the expense of scientists from other countires, and the author's placement of the earliest modern humans in the Middle East will be controversial. All in all however this is an excellent complement to other introductory material about human origins, and the illustrations alone are worth the reasonable price

This is a beautiful book --- especially for the beginner. Easy to read, lavishly illustrated, and small enough not to be heavy, it introduces the reader to various ideas we have had about our origins, Darwin's theory of evolution, and the discoveries of various fossil humans. The introductory illustrations are especially striking because they illustrate the way our species has evolved from ape-like beginnings. These illustrations also graphically show the way culture has evolved along with our bodies. I feel this book is invaluable for a student of biology or anthropology, or anyone who wants an comprehensible introduction to a fascinating but complex subject

We just received a dog from the humane society a week ago. A few days prior to getting the dog I bought this book and read about the first half. I found it incredibly helpful and informative. Most resources you read mostly have information regarding bringing home puppies from breeders, with very little about shelters. Not only did this book help calm my nerves about getting the dog, but I refer to it constantly to answer my questions that come up.

I bought this book because I am a fan of the writing ability of its author, Marion Lane. Over the years, she has written many articles and columns about various aspects of choosing, raising, and living well with a pet. I like her perspective on the importance of the human-animal bond, and I like the down-to-earth, often humorous, always wise way she talks to her readers. I am not a "dog person" myself, but many of my friends, coworkers, and neighbors are. I've lent out the book to a friend considering getting a new dog after being dogless for many years. She found Marion's section on factors to consider in choosing a dog very helpful. I took the book to the office when two of my coworkers had to decide how to handle end-of-life matters for their beloved pets. Marion's sensitive handling of the deep feelings involved brought Cheryl and Gisela to tears, but those were tears they needed to cry to loosen the tight knot of feelings that weren't being fully expressed. They found Marion's ideas comforting. I'm glad to have this book as a resource to lend out to my friends and acquaintances who have benefitted from reading relevant sections. I wish that prospective dog owners would read a book like this before getting a dog, so that they would know what they are undertaking, and could make a better decision about whether they and a particular dog are likely to make a good match.

Marion Lane and the HSUS have given dog lovers an excellent book that covers the range of subjects from selecting the right dog to facing the inevitable decline and death of our beloved pets. The book is not just for the "doggy set." It is written in language that everyone can understand and should be a valuable resource for those wanting to better understand and care for that most important family member. The author's knowledge about and love of dogs comes through on every page. It really is a book that belongs in every dog owner's library - even if it is the only "dog care" book.

Bowles immersion into the culture of North Africa has produced some of the most interesting literature. This scant collection of four stories is an attractive little book of inconsequential but readable tales. Just as Bowles studied and collected Moroccan music as a key into the North African mindset so here he studies kif as another kind of key, one that gives him direct access into the North African subconscious. Bowles sets forth in the introduction that these tales are put together making use of associations made while he was under the kif influence. ....the best parts to my ears are the hermetic sayings overheard by kif smokers. "The eye wants to sleep but the head is no mattress", "The earth trembles and the sky is afraid, and the two eyes are not brothers", "A pipe of kif before breakfast gives a man the strength of one hundred camels in the courtyard".
The folk simplicity of these tales is very appealing. Later Bowles will cover this terrain again when he works with Mohammed Mrabet transcripting that Moroccans oral tales. An excellent book by Mrabet/Bowles is M'Hashish(which means full of hashish). Happy happy reading.

There are two things that set this collection of short stories apart from other Beat movement literature. First, everyone of these stories, regardless of actual plot, includes the use of kif (marijuana). Secondly, this is one of the few true Beat works that is set outside of the American continent. In fact, it is more a collection of folk tales inspired by a merge of Jewish, Moslem, and European cultures. It was not unknown for the Beats to travel to such exotic places as Morocco. William Burroughs did a stint over there. But, the tales told here could have been written by a native, rather than an outsider who was merely visiting. Well worth the read!

"A pipe of kif before breakfast gives a man the strength of a hundred camels in the courtyard." The proverb which opens this collection of stories lets us know where Bowles is coming from. Four short tales of Moroccan kif smokers open doors into worlds distant in time, space, and spiritual reality from millennial America. Bowles' style is distantly reminiscent of Hemingway in its bare simplicity, but also evocative of the South American magical realists in its exploration of the miraculous.

Each of his heroes is a kif smoker, and each finds it to be a useful and integral part of his life. Whether dealing with difficult neighbors in "A Friend of the World" or avoiding the cops in "He of the Assembly," smokers have a definite edge in Bowles' Morocco. But this is no simple paean--the stupid everyday troubles that also spring from kif are presented vividly and humorously (the soldier who loses his gun in "The Wind at Beni Midar" perfectly captures the zenith and nadir of chronic use). Short but satisfying, "A Hundred Camels in the Courtyard" makes an excellent introduction to Paul Bowles' work.

This is one entralling book! I knew there were meat eating plants, but I never thought of them as "passive" and "active". The book is broken up in cute sections, "Gulp!" and "Slurp!" being my favorite, but the entire book keeps your interest. The drawings are quite excellent and you learn a lot just by looking at the pictures. I really enjoyed it and my little brother just loves it. A hit.

Great subject, and wonderfully presented with interesting scientific facts and beautiful illustrations. This book made learning about insect eating plants a treat.

This is a book for young readers to test their skills but it isa book for all readers to enjoy - fascinating science about insecteating plants, a subject about which we generally know little. No matter what your age, you'll love it and great illustrations, too.

I think this book is great it was written so neatly and i think you should all call the publisher and tell them to bring it back.

Simply, there are three main reasons to read this book One, it provides the reader with an inside look at the lifestyle of Major League Baseball Players. This is especially interesting because the Krukker is not the stereotypical mold for a baseball player, physically, or as you will know when you finish the book, he has a more humble attitude then baseball players are given credit for. It really makes you wish you could live your life playing baseball Two, it is hysterical, especially the second or third time you read it (I have read it at least 5 times) Three, even non-baseball fans can appreciate this down to earth look at life generally.

John Kruk was not known in Philly for his neatness therefore you cannot expect his book to be neat either ! Instead the book is everything that embodied Krukker,and the rest of his team mates during that wonderful season 1993. He is honest, open and caring. He is straight forward where criticism is needed and gentle and kind where emotions ran high. His story about his bout with cancer was touching and human. I ain't an athlete lady, maybe not but you are a heck of a human being. Thanks for a terrific experience. This book makes us all part of the 93 Phillies. Welcome to Macho Row !

Oh yes, we can relate to this wonderful tale! It is
so "right on" for those of us who have these royal ladies in our families!

Carol Diggory Shields has hit paydirt with the excellent "I Am Really a Princess." This rollicking tale begins with the irresistible line, "I am really a princess. And when my true parents, the king and queen, find out how I've been treated around here, they are going to be very upset."

From this beginning, we are launched into a list of how our heroine will be living her life differently once the enormous injustice of her current situation is understood. She'll have no chores, no homework, no pet-feeding duties. The king and queen will spoil her rotten!

Paul Meisel's illustrations are colorful and cartoony in a cheerful way. They complement the text beautifully (check out his reverse version of a damsel-in-distress scene!). Lots of fun for any little girl who's secretly convinced that she's a member of royalty!

In this story, a little girl describes how her life SHOULD be, since she is really a princess, and not a little girl! Of course, she is royalty only in her mind, but that only makes this story more funny! A great book for that precocious little girl in your life.

I don't know why or how but when I read out loud any 5-10 names of God, I feel God's presence. May be it was just me I thought. So I let my friend borrow it and told him to read it out loud during his devotion and he felt the presence of God as well.

It is a simple book, on one page it has a name of God such as "I am the friend of sinners" and one bible quote to back up the name, yet so powerful. I must be invoking something spiritual when I verbalize the names of God. I don't get it, but who cares, I simply delight in the presence of God.

I was in Chicago last year, when I first heard John Paul Jackson read the names of God. The Presence of God pervaded the atmosphere. Hundreds of people were deeply moved by the Presence of the Holy Spirit. I could do nothing other than fall to my knees and weep. I will never forget it.

When I learned that the book was available, I could hardly wait to read it. I regularly walk through my home, reading the names of God. As I do, I am aware that He comes to fill the spaces of my daily life as personally and powerfully as He did that Saturday night in Chicago.

I love to meditate on the names of God, because I am aware that as I do so, He is smiling and keeping a record of it. It is such a simple way to bring joy to the heart of my Heavenly Father. For me, it brings an immense awareness of His love, strength to my spirit, focus for my mind, and an increase of faith.

The author has identified 365 names of God and suggests that the reader meditate on a different one each day. When I pick up the book and begin to read, I cannot stop with just one. I usually do not put the book down, until I have read them all.

Five stars seem too few to rate how highly I esteem this author and I AM.

The content of this book brings to life the very nature of who God is. It is as simple as a few words a day and yet it is as deep & insightful as you allow it to be in your life. The choice is yours. God always meets you where you are. This book visually reflects the excellency of who God is, making it a joy to pick this book up daily.

This is personal account from Paul Wein of 9.11 . But what makes this book so special - is combination of his thouts and pictures . He picked up his best friend and dropped him by WTC THAT morning ... few hours later ... he watched the WTS going down . This book dedicated to his best friend , Douglas Farnum... He was killed on 9.11...
The pictures not perfect , but this is give us a real story of New Yorkers at this day . Than , as NY official , he works at the sight ... so sad ...

I must say that Paul Wein is the one of the best writers I ever seen. I love his writing!!

I have read I've Seen The Lights Go Out On Broadway several times since receiving it, and I have to say that it is one of the most powerful, moving tomes I have EVER read. Compiled from a series of articles written for his column, A Penny For My Thoughts, Paul Wein's book shows the thoughts and emotions of one who was there when the Twin Towers fell on 9/11, and I have to say that he does it very well. Without reservation or prejudice, I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to see a personal account of the tragedy that happened on 9/11.
