This is a reference book which delivers what it says it will
If you're doing genealogy work in Nebraska then you'll find this book invaluable. There were so many settlements during pioneer days which no longer exist, or worse that have changed their names. This book will be a life-saver because it has it all! I keep thinking that I'll finally find some reference in a family history which the book won't have, but it hasn't happened yet! This is a reference book which so far has been 100% complete.

Permanent Flux

Authors: Laurie Anderson and Paul Garrin
Amazon base price: $30.00
Average review score:

Where did media art come from?
Four artists give their own perspective on the birth of media art. Permanent Flux contains collections of video and experimental film from the 20's that help you explore, and make your own opinion to the origin of media art. I have used this cd in my classes to show my students what a good work of multimedia should look like, and to explore the fields of media, film, and art. Rarely can you find a work of multimedia that works so well. You can navigate in many different ways, making this a useful tool that you won't get bored using. And sometimes its interesting to hear Laurie Anderson tell a tale or two. As it is so hard to find good material to support the history of multimedia art, this work is important to have while there still are copies, as DE balie is a small publishing group.

Person and Community: Selected Essays (Catholic Thought from Lublin, Vol 4)

Bridging the Gap...
In these lectures and essays, Pope John Paul bridges a gap between the metaphysical and the subjective. Here the Pope begins to develop a consistent treatment of the human person through upholding the objective and metaphysical foundations established in such philosophers as Thomas Aquinas while turning to the human person's subjectivity in experience as the irreducible foundation of examining the nature of man. The Pope uses the tools of phenemenology to complement and deepen the metaphyiscal foundations of human nature, ultimately revealing personhood.

I can't get enough!! Excellent for those interested in both Medieval philosophy and phenomenology. I literally have trouble putting this stuff down.

Serious christ-centered view of medical psychology
In the person reborn one finds the remarkably clear understanding of both the human psyche and soul that Paul Tournier has gained from a lifetime of experience as a practicing psychiatrist and disciple of Christ Jesus. A must read for Christians in the field and anyone who is fascinated by the gray area between religion, belief, and the mind.

Persuaders : influence peddling, lobbying, and political corruption in Canada

What we suspected is really true
Paul Malvern wrote this book 15 years age about the Canadian political scene and what really goes on. This topic is little known, as governments have no interest in washing dirty linen in public. He analyses the historical perspective, taking us back to the early days and Canada's corruption of the aboriginal population by traders, politicians and an ethically accomodating clergy. The story just 15 years ago was equally shocking. Corruption and graft seem the name of the game. Ordinary citizens have about zero influence on the decision making process. Mr. Malvern is especially critical of big business and the development industry and their supporters, whose only aims are pure greed. A lot of shots are taken at lobbyists, presssure group, bagmen and influence peddlars. He also criticises politicians at all levels who are anxious to improve their own lot and to be reelected at whatever cost. Political donations are perceived as almost akin to legalised bribery. Figures and tables are clearly presented to illustrate his points. Language is often colourful. I loved his phrase about not being able to buy a politician, but you can rent them!

I would love to see this book updated. He'd have even more material in Canada today, as things seem to be progressively more corrupt- great grist for Mr. Malvern's mill.

Peru: A Cultural History

"From Incas to Inca Cola"---an excellent cultural history
Peru makes few marks on the average person's mind outside Latin America. We may think of llamas, Andes, Pizarro and the conquistadores, Macchu Picchu, the pan pipes and armadillo-shell charangos played by street musicians all over North America, and maybe, in the last few years, violent Maoist guerrillas, drug gangs, and a notorious siege of the Japanese Embassy. Perhaps you have read Vargas Llosa's excellent novels. What else ? Do you recall Theodore Wilder's novel "The Bridge at San Luis Rey" ? What about Yma Sumac or von Hagen's book on the roads of the ancient Inca Empire ? I'm digging deeply now, right ? Unless you have studied a specialized version of history, or have gone in for Latin American anthropology, Peru remains on the fringe of our non-Latin American world. Perhaps you would like to know more. Perhaps you are beginning to study the area or the country. Perhaps you are just looking for a good book on a subject that has always interested you---but you didn't know where to start.

This is the place. It's always a pleasure to find a good basic book that gives you clear, well-written insights into a country or time you really knew only hazily before. That's why I was so glad to read PERU, by Dobyns and Doughty. Though I bought it back in 1983 in Australia, when the book was only seven years published, I didn't get around to reading it till just now. It is part of a series of Latin American Histories put out by Oxford University Press. The only other one I ever read, on Chile, by Brian Loveman, also stood out as excellent.

PERU gives an excellent overview of how that country's culture changed over time, from the ancient civilizations of the oases and highlands long before the Christian era, through the Inca Empire (that began just about a century before its collapse under the Spanish onslaught), to the colonial era and the end of European rule. Even though in the 19th century, the political confusion is reflected in a less Olympian overview from the authors, cultural change, as opposed to blow-by-blow political history, remains uppermost. It is always difficult to separate these culture and political history---one might quibble with the authors whether this or that was entirely necessary, but they provide a readable, interesting account (you can let some of the statistical paragraphs go unless you are collecting data). My edition of the book ends at 1975, before the return of democracy, the rise of Alan Garcia, Fujimori and Sendero Luminoso, and the subsequent fall of all three. There are many books on the Incas and the ancient Peruvian civilizations. Pizarro and the Conquest are also well-covered in literature. Overviews, to my knowledge, are scarce. Thus, while somewhat dated, PERU may be the best book in English on Peruvian cultural history as a whole. Inca Cola does not rate a mention, however, neither does Vargas Llosa.

Just what you were remembering
I began playing guitar in the early seventies, when the hippie generation had helped to bring folk music to the forefront of the popular music scene. The major forces behind the success of folk music at that time -- finally reaching all across America on the radio waves -- were Peter, Paul and Mary. They sang songs that they loved, and became part of our lives; these are the songs you will find in this book. The ones you remember, half-hummed snatches of tunes for every mood and moment. The book features both piano and guitar accompaniment. If I were to find fault with the book, it would be that there were still so many songs I wanted which were not included here, and that it did not have a spiral binding, and so my first copy split and finally needed to be replaced after many well-loved years. This book is the right place to start as you begin learning the best songs to know in the folk tradition.
