A superbly presented biography of an influential American
Frank Brady's The Publisher is the life story of Paul Block who was a newspaper mogul, advertising executive, and political apologist. The core of this comprehensive and meticulous biography is Block's involvement in the history of newspaper publishing and national advertising -- and his influence on the politics of his day which spanned the Gay Nineties, the Jazz age, and the years of the Great Depression. Biographer Frank Brady places Bock within the vivid and dramatic settings of his time as he re-creates the story of Block as a friend, advisor, or opponent of such men as Calvin Coolidge, Herbert Hoover, Alfred E. Smith, Jimmy Walker, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Here also is the personal side of Paul Block's childhood as the son of an immigrant ragpicker who eventually came to live in an opulent suite at the Waldorf Towers and a mansion in Greenwich, Connecticut. The Publisher is a superbly presented biography of an influential American who lived through "interesting times".

Pulling Punches

Very Entertaining!
This British book covers the author's year-long, day-per-week introduction to traditional horse farming in the English countryside. Equally about horses, self-discovery, and cultural differences, this entertaining and self-deprecating author takes you from his introduction to mucking out the stable yard with the taciturn farm help to his wonderful descriptions of his successes and satisfaction in finally handling the horses and equipment competently on his own, gaining some measure of amused respect from the farm's owners (Roger and Cheryl Clarke) along the way. The author is warm and descriptive. This is a very satisfying book. There are also two companion videos available, "First Steps to the Furrow," and "Harnessed to the Plough" which are very worthwhile. Interestingly, I didn't experience the slightest sense of disjointedness between the book and the reality as shown by the videos. That says a lot about the author's power of description.

Pure War

Prophet of speed
I think Virilio is one of the century's genuine original thinkers. More specifically, his thesis about speed and chrono-politics is a key explanation of the basic transformation of society under pressure from technology. Of course he is all over the place and hardly rigorous, but his shere intelligence makes him a 'must read' in my view. His ideas inspire more than educate, but he is worth paying attention to in a world of charlatans passing themselves off as intellectuals. Read, think and understand.

One of the few great running books
This is one of the big "three" in fictional running books. (The other two are "Once a Runner" and "The Long Road to Boston".) What makes this a most unique experience is that it tells a double story - about a New Zealand woman marathoner who looks to break her cycle of "not quite good enough finishes" in the marathon and a mystery man who is world class but has a disfigured face and is embarrassed by it. The workouts run by the mystery man are jaw dropping to say the least. Even with today's super athletes in the distance specialties from African nations would have trouble keeping up with this guy. But it is all compelling and the climax is both the New Zealand woman and the mystery man running in the London Marathon. The whole tale by the way, takes place around London. Having competed at a high level in the past I can honestly say the woman's tale is even more believable than the mystery man (his time in the marathon is much better than the current world record). Still, it is enjoyable reading for any runner.

The Pursuit of Spiritual Wisdom
Published in Hardcover by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Pr (August, 1998)
Authors: Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, and Naomi E. Pursuit of Spiritual Knowledge Maurer
Amazon base price: $65.00
Average review score:

great reference book
Maurer has provided all van Gogh and Gauguin scholars a wonderful book to aid them in their studies. It provides fabulous photos of works and she does an excellent job of comparing them. She even has a few paintings that have up until now not been photographed in color. A good study of these great artists and their struggles for original expression and spirituality. Recommended for any scholar.

A Classic Work in Pyrotechnics
This book is doubtless destined to become a must-have for any serious library of pyrotechnic literature. The scope of the coverage is similar to Ellern's classic "Military and Civilian Pyrotechnics" but the content is much greater and more updated. There is a major section covering civilian fireworks, which covers material lamentably absent in Ellern. While the professional in military or commercial pyrotechnics will find this an invaluable reference, it will also be appreciated by practitioners of civilian fireworks as well. Kudos to Pyrotechnica Publications on a job well done.

if you love kayaks
this book is a must have for any kayaker.I found it at the library and was amazed by the amount of info about traditional kayak design and techniques.I guess it was the accompanying text for an exhibition by the Alaska Division of State Museums. It was making the rounds in the mid-eighties and featured kayaks from all around the Arctic circle, such as siberia, greenland, baffin, etc. Too cool! If youre sick of 60# lugboats and are looking at lighter designs you have to check out this book.

Long Overdue
Psychological research has veered away from qualitative design, often because the methodologies have been misunderstood. Dr. Camic and his colleagues offer us a great deal in this book. Chapters talk about both attitude and strategies. Some are familiar methods, others are newer. It is an essential book for students and researchers, and I hope it will bring more psychologists back to qualitative work.

Interesting and instructive
This book is recommended to anyone who is interested in quantum mechanical system composed of finite interacting particles. Although authors are inclined to nuclear physics, each subject is interesting and description is comprehensible to a quantum chemist like me. I agree to the authors' opinion that there are too few books on finite systems and they seem to succeed to improving this situation.
