great and easy read of history
best history of golden to modern comics...great references...awsome for autographs

More than a history lesson!
At first glance, this appears to be nothing more than a history of comic books. While it certainly is that, it also adds a number of things that really sets it apart from other similar books. First, it includes people and events beyond America's borders. (Most comic history books I've read focus only on U.S. comic books.) It also includes an excellent index of comic creators, publishers, and an exhaustive list of titles (with publication dates, print runs and other noteworthy points of interest). There are also sections specifically on collecting and grading comics. Well-written, enlightening, and a little more refreshing than most comic histories.

The Commercial Mediator's Handbook: A Practical, Systems-Based Approach
Published in Paperback by CMA Press (August, 2001)
Authors: Paul L. Warren and Melissa W. Scoggins
Amazon base price: $49.95
Average review score:

What the Academics Are Saying . . .
This is the first book that approaches mediation of commercial conflicts in a systematic, theory-based way, yet it is easy-to-read and functional. Applying systems theory to resolution of business disputes in effect gives the mediator a new set of tools. The section on identifying interests instead of taking positions is the best I've read since Getting to Yes. Every educator should use this book, and every mediator should read it.

Arthur E. Warner, Ph.D.
Former dean, University of Tennessee, College of Business Administration

A Godsend to the Business, Legal and Mediation Communities
Paul Warren has given us a real gift! This concise handbook is destined to become required reading not only for commercial mediators but for all forward-thinking businesspersons, attorneys and students who want to understand - and practice - the future of resolving conflict in the marketplace. Everything needed to effectively resolve conflict without litigation is here: context, practical steps for mediation, trouble shooting difficulties and difficult people, ethics, checklists and even sample forms to guide the process.

The author's solid background and experience in business, mediation and litigation is clear. This is what makes this book so practical. As a mediator and attorney, this book is invaluable to me as a guide and a useful reference. Mr. Warren's seminar using this text was among the best mediation, business or continuing legal education courses I've had in nearly two decades of experience.

Bravo, Paul! Thanks for sharing your experience.

Lovely reading
This is a wonderful, wonderful book--and one that appealed to me for many reasons, some personal and some not. First, if you love reading about writers and writing (as I do), you'll love this book. Good writers and brilliant poets open their hearts in their essays and write frankly about the tough times they have gone through--e.g., the times they hated their work, the times they weren't producing anything. And also they write about the troubles and joys of being young, and what it is like to have brilliant and flawed mentors in a very special, challenging academic situation.

At first, I thought the book was meant to be an unabashed hagiography of Paul Engle. Nope. Midway through the book arrive the essays from former workshoppers who, like W.D. Snodgrass, were NOT Engle's favored proteges; those essays give you even more insight into the workshop and Engle himself.

More personally, the book brought me home to Iowa City, where I lived for over 12 happy years. Although most of the book's recollections center on the 1950s and 1960s, some of the places and businesses the writers describe in their essays thrive today.

I had a lovely time reading this book, and I think others will, too.

Fascinating Behind-the-Scenes Look at Iowa Writer's Workshop
This is one of the most entertaining collections of essays that I have ever read. It gives a true behind-the-scenes look at the world-renowned Iowa Writer's Workshop. Many of the essays are tremendously funny. This book appeals to a far wider audience than just M.F.A. students. Anyone who is interested in writers and writing will find this book tremendously entertaining, informative and thought-provoking. (However, if you've ever attended an M.F.A. program, you will find this book particularly insightful.) The essays read like little stories of their own. Read this book--you won't regret it!!

I used this book and loved it
My husband and I were traveling by motorhome through the Southwest this winter. I bought this guide and it made our trip to New Mexico so much more meaningful. It provides exactly the kind of cultural and historical context I like to have in a very user friendly format. I have used other guides including Insight, Smithsonian, Mobil, etc. If the others in the series are as well done, this will be my guide of choice. It also has beautiful photos and helpful maps.

There's a much newer edition!
Hey amazon! There's a new edition of this book (actually there have been 2.....) The newest comes out in February, with completely updated info and pictures. You should order it!

This is a wonderful book!
I love this book,it is so informative and has lots of rare photos of Dusty.I like reading about all of her songs that she recorded, whether it be studio, live or songs that she meant to record, but for one reason or another, didn't get around to them.Lots of nice quotes by Dusty,as well.A must for the Dusty fan.

The true book for the true Dusty fan. Dusty would be proud!
After many failed attempts by other authors to mine Dusty Springfield's troubled personal life for a few ducats, finally a respectable book that focuses on the musical and artistic influence of the White Queen of Soul and gives us intense detail about what went on in her recording studio and not in her bedroom.

A work of intense dedication and love, this compendium contains information on the more than 288 songs that Dusty recorded throughout her 40 year singing career. Includes hard to find information about never released (or yet to be released) tracks, as well as info on albums, live concert line-ups and song lists. Plus, it is full of wonderful photos (many rare, previously unseen) of the Lady herself in various environments and outfits.

A true gift for the true Dusty Springfield fan. I've been waiting for years for a book like this, and finally, Paul Howes has delivered the goods!

Charlesworth Does It Again
Chris Charlesworth has written a similar volume for the Who which was one of the best ever written about their music. This succeeds as well providing a great deal of information about Paul Simon and his songs (each track is discussed). However, I felt that Art Garfunkel got the short end of the stick because his solo career doesn't get the same treatment and receives only brief allusions. Now the the Old Friends box set has been released, maybe a revised version could include Garfunkel's solo work, too.

Great Overview Of Simon & Garfunkel
Best book of its kind about the duo. Great review of their career and music in a compact format.

Complete Idiot's Guide to Child Safety
Parents receive so much information about possible dangers to their children and what they can do to protect them that they find it difficult to know where to draw the line. What safety measures should they insist their child and other caregivers observe? Which ones are less important? This book helps them focus on what is most important. As manager of Texas Children's Center for Childhood Injury Prevention and the local Safe Kids coordinator, I hear many stories from parents about what problems might have been prevented if they had only known . . . Since we can expect each year for one child in four to be injured badly enough to need medical care, this is a most needed reference for parents.

Keep Your Kids Safe!
Keeping kids safe sounds scary, but this book offers some simple solutions. The authors not only educate readers about safety at home and school, in the car and on the bike, they also tackle safety and sports, pools, and even farms.

Did you know that falls from shopping carts are a major reason why kids visit emergency rooms? The authors explain how to keep your kid secure in the cart. Do you when your child is old enough to cross the street alone? The answer surprised me. Do you when your child is mature enough to be home alone? They offer a quiz to help you decide when your child -- and you -- are ready for that big step.

I recommend this book for anyone who watches kids between infancy and age 14. After all, keeping our kids safe and secure is just as important as letting them know they are loved.

Big things come in small packages
It's amazing how much information is in this rather small book. You could keep it in your pocket as you built your own functional yurt. The writing is to the point and very informative. I've checked out many books on building yurts and this is the best. High points of this book for me: clear patterns, listing of materials and tools needed, time estimates for building, vocabulary of yurt parts, basic history of the people who use yurts, their various regions, and yurt variations. Get this book if you really want to build a yurt and do it right.

A do-it-yourself education in the art of yurt-building
The Complete Yurt Handbook by professional yurt builder Paul King is a solid history of the yurt, a simple dwelling used throughout central Asia for hundreds of years. It is also a "user friendly" how-to instruction book for building several different types of yurt. Exhaustively researched and steeped in Mongolian history and culture, The Complete Yurt Handbook illustrates its meticulous instructions with photographs and diagrams, presenting a thorough do-it-yourself education in the art of yurt-building. The Complete Yurt Handbook is a fascinating, unique, and highly recommended book presenting just about everything there is to know about the yurt.

I have answers for what-why-how after reading it...
I bought it just looking at the table of contents at ... website, and I got exactly what I was looking for !! A complete book on image processing/interpretation for remote-sensing imageries. There is even a concise introduction on remote-sensing principles. The book is concisely detailed and have clear how-to-do theoretical/mathematical explanations(often lacking in others) on every topic. And the best point, every section/method is referred to key publicatons for anyone interested in in-depth study of a topic !!!

Excellent book with CD tools as well
I checked the book out from my library to read for my thesis, but the book is so good that I want to add it to my own collection. I have used it so much, that I'll need my own copy! The CD that comes with the book is also very good. The programs run very quickly on today's fast PC's. It's a great tool.
