Tanzania: Portrait of a Nation
I highly recommend this book for those who wish to see Tanzania, from the perspectives of tourism and natural beauty, as well as the people and many ways of living. The photographer and his partner have traveled extensively through the country and have captured Tanzanian people and scenes that are unusual, beautiful, as well as interestingly mundane. As one who has lived in Tanzania I think that it portrays a well-balanced spectrum of the facets of the country, via beautiful photographs and informative and well-written descriptions and history/background. I most highly recommend this book and I hope that others will enjoy it as I have.

More Books like this Please!
I enjoyed this book very much. The Colombe d'Or comes up again and again in guide books covering the Provencal/Cote d'Azur regions. This book takes an in depth look at the history of this restaurant/hotel, including historical photos of loyal patrons like Picasso, Yves Montand, and Francois Truffaut.

The book is printed in France, the the paper quality is very good. The focus of the book is on the visual rather than the written word, containing mostly photographs (black and white as well as color).

The book also includes photographs of artwork owned by the Colombe d'Or. As well as being a top notch restaurant and hotel, this establishment could also be counted as a museum.

My only complaint is that there were not more photos of the hotel itself, or the surrounding town. The focus seems to be on the social life of this establishemnt.

This would make a beautiful gift for a Provence-ophile, cook, or art lover.

Western philosophy in 101 pages
This book describes itself as something between a dictionary and a philosophy textbook. In a textbook, the definitions would go on and on for pages. In a dictionary, there are often only one or two sentences. In this format, every term, person etc.. gets one page, which comes out to roughly 300 - 400 words each. In the definitions, there is often a definition a paragraph in length, then arguments for the concept and then criticisms that have been offered against the concept. Often, there is an illustration of the theory, which may be of assistance to people who are new to the subject. This is a useful ready reference book for someone wondering what some of the major ideas have been in the past 2500 years of Western philosophy.

Some of the different concepts and persons covered are:

Empiricism

Ethics

Karl Jaspers

Continental Philosophy

Argument ad hominem

Absolutism

Materialism

Philosophy of Education

Rationalism

Rene Déscartes

John Locke

Pantheism

Meaning

Existentialism

Naturalism

Free Will

Deduction

Egoism

Metaphysics

Objectivism

My criticism of the book is that if occasionally explains a term via an analogy or scenario but then fails to provide a clear definition of the term itself. However, only a handful of the entries are like this.

In ethics, I think I would affirm Absolutism and Objectivism which are defined as: Absolutism: "This is the general philosophical view that there are fundamental truths about the world which are independent of the opinions of individual people or of different societies... Ethical absolutism is the view that there are moral principles which are true in all cultures and societies, and at all times in history, irrespective of whether human beings do in fact adhere to them." (page 2)

Objectivism: "This is the contention in ethics that there are certain moral principles which are true and which are quite independent of the beliefs of individual human beings." (page 69)

Some of the other frankly illogical and dangerous ideas are emotive theory ("... the view that moral judgments are fundamentally an articulation of feelings..." page 32) or relativism ("Relativism takes the view there are no fixed or absolute standards in relation to knowledge about the world, moral behaviour, social organization, or any other aspect of human life." page 84). Emotive theory is apparently a representative of the non-cognitivist school of ethics.

The series, as far as I know, is British. Both this series (101 key ideas) and the other "Teach Yourself," books are British. Their style is somewhat different from American or Canadian writing but as this is a ready-reference work, that is not really an issue.

The end of the book is a one page long, "Further Reading," section.

Two excellent Christian books that cover some of these ideas and provide a Christian response are:

The Baker Encyclopedia of Christian Apologetics by Norman Geisler

Relativism: Feet Firmly Planted in Mid-Air by Francis J. Beckwith and Gregory Koukl

All-encompassing
This book is all-encompassing guide for teachers and technology. It is about both technology-what is in a computer, and teaching-what works and why. Computer topics are covered separately in "primer" chapters (6) that are inserted at various points throughout the book. The first few primer chapters are extremely basic, covering such things as how to use a mouse, progressing later to setting up a network and how ASCII codes work. The teaching chapters focus on showing how teaching methods can be enhanced with technology.

One of the drawbacks of this book is that it tries to be something for everyone, and I was nearly turned off by the first few chapters, which were far too basic for my needs (eg. what can a word processor do?). However, as I got deeper into the book, I found many useful ideas and concepts. Application programs and computer-based instruction are examined in detail in separate chapters, as well as choosing software, classroom management, and administrative concerns.

As a textbook, the book is very well designed. The language of the book, while academic, is readily accessible by undergraduate students. Each of the regular chapters starts with a list of objectives and ends with a short summary and review. Each chapter also includes a list of suggested activities of varying difficulty, as well as recommended software and Web links. The book includes an index and list of references, but no glossary.

The author is a kind and gentle soul
I probably cannot think of another person who could write a book like this. Paul Edward Napora has travelled many mystic miles and deserves more attention from the reading public. He will some day be known possibly as a man of vision and casts his role as writer in a most appropriate fashion, bringing ideas and wisdom together and an insight that can only be gained by reading this incredible book. Come on a journey...

An overlooked masterpiece
This is a wonderful novel about Vietnam, the Kennedy assassination and other modern fascinations. "The Tears of Autumn" is an early McCarry work that shows the seeds of his later greatness. Anyone who is nominally interested in historical fiction or spy novels will love this book.

Good starting point to refresh your math skills...
This is a general mathematics text specifically written at the junior college level. The book begins with the number system and surveys the whole gamut from Algebra to Trig to Matrices to Calculus. I use this text to refresh my skills AFTER reading a standard college textbook (ex. Stewart's Calculus). There are numerous worked problems. A great feature are the boxed segments that show formulae and special rules. The layout of the text is very good with wide margins and a good font size. I highly recommend this text as a good review tool and to brush up on your math skills.

Philosophy Review
Philosophy in general is a necessary tool to understand life and the purpose of it. This book takes a collection of the works that most greatly aid in this purpose to form a concauction of ideas that allow for greater understanding of philosophers and how they can and will relate to every person's life. The preface by Wolff is excellent and allows readers with a less comprehensive understanding of philosophy to still recieve valuble information, or readers with a thorough understanding to see another interpretation of these amazing works of literature.
