No MATLAB syntax
If you're looking for a book to learn how to model differential equations with MATLAB, don't buy this book. No examples in MATLAB are given, only references to what commands in 'DELAB' (The author's MATLAB interface) can be used to solve problems. I purchased and returned this book.

great explainations
this book has very little illustrations and graphics to show what the mathmatical models are doing, yet it's still a great learning tool. in some instances, the book can give you an example and jump right to a conclusion, which can be confusing, so you will need someone to explain the middle ground to you unless you are very very fluent in algebra and calculus. however, most of the time, the explainations and instructions are very clearly written (in comparison with most math texts). I'm not using MATLAB, so i don't know how well the book teaches and utilizes the software.

VERY DISAPPOINTING
At some point Focal Press thought it would be good to put out a title on digital cinematography. It is very unfortunate that they seem to have put this book together so hastily just to fill in a market niche. The book reads almost like a glossary. Although it has close to 200 pages, almost half of these are simply Sony DVW menus copied out or explained! This is a lot of filler. Do you own a DVW camera? Neither do I. These are extremely expensive, big-company cameras, which sort of defeats the purpose since many people interested in digital cinematography are trying to escape such high costs. The information that applies to digital filmmaking at large is way too general. At other times the book delves on worn-out subjects such as the title chapter: "Why digital photography?" The author goes on: "it is wrong these days to think of tape as an inferior medium..." (don't we all know this...?!) The book remains shallow most of the time. Paul Wheeler is wrong to think this subject needs a lot of filler to yield a book. Many subjects could have been better explained. The small number of illustrations shows how poorly the author faced his task. Yes, Paul Wheeler has a lot of experience, but it seems to have worked against him: the book is either too specific (i.e. on the Sony cameras) or too shallow. It is a bad choice for professional or beginner alike. I should have paid more attention before buying it.

A GREAT HELP
To counter the VERY DISAPPOINTING review, I found this book to be of great use. I happen to work at an institute that only uses Sony Equipment. This book was the best source of knowledge I've found dealing with Sony cameras. The sections dealing with the menus have by far been a lifesaver. So should you happen to use, or maybe even own a Sony DVCam, DigiBeta, or HDCam this book is a wonderful reference guide.

Keep out of reach of children
This is a book that was written, in my opinion, to scare the living daylights out of kids to keep them from doing drugs. I am however, against the book being located in a 3rd through 5th grade school library. This book is absurb, and very risque for the era of books that it is up against now. I would strongly recommend that all people strongly reconsider the choice to purchase and read this book. It should be banned from libraries, not Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. This is absolutely outrageous and totally unappropriate for a book of its kind to be put into the hands of an 9 or 10 year to read. STOP THE PRINTING OF THIS BOOK!!!

Dope Deal
This book is about a man selling dope and got caught.
He was sleeping one day and police broke in his house.
He got raided. He went to jail but his dad bailed him out.
I like this book because this book is intresting.

Portugal is Missing in the Picture
Any book about East Timor should dedicate a chapter to the Portuguese foreign policy about this issue. It was the East Timorese and the Portuguese who kept this question alive when nobody wanted to know. Therefore, explaining and understanding East Timor in the last 25 years must include Portugal. Unfortunately, this is not the case. On the other hand, with one or two exceptions, the chapters do not bring any relevant new information. If you have an average knowledge about this issue, this book will not bring you much insight. Definitely, this is not a must.

Portugal is Missing in the Picture
Any book about East Timor has to dedicate a chapter to the Portuguese foreign policy about this issue. As far as everybody knows, Portugal was the former colonial power wasn't it? Otherwise, explaining and understanding East Timor in the last 25 years will be missing an important actor. Unfortunately, this is the case. On the other hand, with one or two exceptions, the chapters do not bring any relevant new information. Definitely, this is not a must.

A compendium of Keynesian superstitions
Put together 5 or 10 past editions of this widely-used textbook, and you'll have a documentary history of Keynesian backtracking as history keeps proving Samuelson and company wrong. My favorite howler: "It is a vulgar mistake to think that most people in Eastern Europe are miserable." -- Samuelson, _Economics_, the 1981 edition.

Another howler: last time I checked, _Economics_ still held to the validity of the Phillips Curve -- the idea that inflation and unemployment are inversely related. Samuelson and Nordhaus evidently slept through the stagflation of the 1970s -- editions of the textbooks going into the 1990s didn't even discuss stagflation in the context of the Phillips Curve theory, much less acknowledge that the mere existence of stagflation demonstrates the absurdity of Phillips' theory.

If you want to learn the reality of economics, read Henry Hazlitt's _Economics in One Lesson_, Milton Friedman's _Free to Choose_, George Gilder's _Wealth and Poverty_, and Friedrich Hayek's _Road to Serfdom_ for starters.

Great Book
First of all if this was not a great book, it wouldn't be taught in hundreds of countries worldwide. I read this book 4 years back in Pakistan. I loved the book and wanted to come to USA and meet this great man in Boston (Which I finally did). Only weakness of this book is it's high level content. In this book some very simple contents have been potrayed as very complicated.

Uninspiring
This book was uninspired at best. The authors attempt to draw the reader in was weak due to the underdeveloped characters. Being a service member with experience in dealing with international tension at the lowest level, I can say sicerely that this story was plausable but again underdeveloped.

My greatest hope in writing this review is that I will steer the average reader who is not in the military away from this writer in order to prevent any misconceptions about the U.S. Army. I also would like to prevent other readers from the sense of bewilderment at the conclusion of the story.

Excellent action, not Dickens, but not corny.
Excellent action, not Dickens, but not corny. This book is filled with lots of action sequences and different incidences. The equivalent of watching the movie Navy SEALs (Charlie Sheen) or Saving Private Ryan (insomuch as the frequent action and so on) I really liked it a lot and highly recommend it. Its easy to get into.

Not what I had hoped for
This book was very samll (116 pages) and was not what I had hoped for. I am a new cichlid owner and this is not the first book I bought. I already had my tank and my starter fish. I wanted some information that was not in your average "dummies book" which I had already read. What I got was some new information, but for the most part, it was just a review book.
Also, I wanted an idea for some more fish to buy. This book has profiles of 40 cichlids, which sounds like a lot. However, when you take into account the size you want (in my case 4 or 5 inches) and the disposition of the fish (a lot of reviewed fish would not do well in a community species tank), you end up with just a small number of fish you would even want.
In conclusion, it was an informative introductory book, but I wish I would have spent a few more dollars and gotten a more complete species guide.

Fishkeepers Guide to African Cichlids
This was good book for someone buying their first Cichlid (Like me). However I very quickly wanted to know more! The book is great for setting up the tank and gives nice reviews of some species. I think it is a good first book, I found it very helpful, but it is not for experienced cichlid breeders.

Flat Lands

Not the Classic Sci Fi book
Flat Lands by Paul Hadella is NOT the famous book about life in a two-dimensional world. Instead it is a bunch of self-important modern poetry, if that isn't redundant. If one set out to write a parody of bad modern poetry, you could not do better than this book.

I recommend it for the unintended humor factor alone. But it isn't the classic "Flatland"; buyer beware.

Flat Land
This book gives you an inside look on other dimensions or worlds. This book can be kind of confusing to those who don't like to think big. I really like this book, but you might have to read more than once to kind of get grasp of what is is really saying. This book is for those who like trying to figure out things and those who really have time on their hands. I'd recommend this book to anyone, only if they really want to take time and think what they are reading.

Weakly written; limited in scope and content.
'Hermann Goring, Hitler Paladin or Puppet' by Wolfgang Paul is very weakly written. Covering the life of one of history's most fascinating individuals, the author, Wolfgang Paul fails miserably to deliver an interesting, well written book. Supposedly covering the life of the Reichmarshall from birth until death, this book lacks different and varied source material for quotes and does not even include a bibliography. Poorly written when compared to some of the classic works on World War II, such as Toland's work on Adolph Hitler, this book is better left on the shelf in the bookstore. One is forced to wonder if the author even bothered to do adequate research on his subject. A BIG disappointment from the first page until the last.

Exceedingly well researched; exceedingly tediously written.
This book suffers only from its lifeless and tedious style. I suspect that the translation is partly to blame. It is not an easy read, but it is a very well researched and highly detailed factual study of the Reichsmarschall--the only prominent Nazi to come from a "good" family: he was a descendant, on his father's side, of the high nobility and most of the reigning houses of the Middle Ages. The author's knowledge of, and recitation of, collateral factual details is amazing, if not slightly pretentious. Did you know, for example that the Reichsmarschall kept one of his three glass vials of hydrocyanic acid in a jar of Nivea? The book is a tour de force of Teutonic trivia and a delight for any serious student of the Third Reich. The style in which the book is written is problematic, off-putting and a bit irritating, but the quality of the research content is definitely worth the effort. A four page bibliography is present.

Brilliant idea for a plot, thriller it's not.
Two programmers invent a cunning process to develop the world's first biological computer that is capable of independent learning & problem solving. It reads like a snail lost at sea and is about as suspenseful as waiting for the kettle to boil. It doesn't even have a plot until you're 3/4s of the way through. I actually loved the concept, but was gravely disappointed by the way it limped through each chapter. Sure, technical garb is fine - but after a while you begin to wonder if something is gonna HAPPEN...

3.5 stars - science fiction with style
This is quite a good book. Basically a young computer bloke gets working with a company called Compugen (I think) and works on their newest computer which uses bioelectronics and stuff, so the computer 'grows' to the task at hand (complete with sloppy disks). With a fair bit of science fiction, genetic engineering and computer stuff in there it may be hard going for some, but it is pretty rivetting with Adrian and Toby tailoring a virus to their needs with ... well, some unexpected results. A dash of humour and some neat twists make this a pretty good read.
