THE LIVING and the dead
This book offers a great perspective on how Robert McNamara's decisions affected the lives of five ordinary people who consequently find themselves in unordinary situations. I think these stories, in conjunction with other historical texts, masterfully articulate some of the features of the clouded tapestry that we call Vietnam.

The reality of being a romany person in the Czech Republic.
I have lived in the Czech Republic for several years: however, it is still very hard to understand what it really means to be a gypsy here.

Paul Polansky's poems bring alive both the horror of the Lety camp (which he was responsible for exposing to the world) and the reality of life for romany people in modern Czech society.

Excellent resource for an intriguing small group Bible study
Our small group Sunday School class (about 12 adults ranging from about 25-55) used this resource for a 12 week study. There are six lessons, but as we tend to be chatty, we lengthened our time on each. Not only did we find the material intriguing and the theme unusual, but it also inspired us as a group to take a families trip to a nearby aquarium at the end of our study. This is not an overly preachy Bible study, but it does provide sound scriptural resource for looking at a natural and spiritual resource in a new and refreshing way.

Mays Makes Sense of Ultra Complex, Often Mismanaged System
Dr. Mays has brilliantly tackled an extremely complex subject about an often mismanaged system in a complete, easily understood work that should be read by anybody even remotely concerned with health care. Lessons learned from the painstaking research Mays completed during his tenure at University of North Carolina, offers solutions that if applied by comminities will save taxpayers millions of dollars and offer low income patients better, more humane and more efficient medical care. Dr. Mays' groundbreaking research shows how so many public health care systems provide overlapping services that carelessly waste money and ultimatly do not serve the people who so desperately need care. Read this book, and you will both be horrified at how medical services are sometimes provided and understand how the future of health care could be so much brighter.

A terrific intro to substantive due process
As a junior political science major at UNC, I have had to read a lot of books similar to Kens's. These books focus on a particular case, be it the Skokie trial, the Tinker armband case, the Chadha legislative veto case or the Bakke affirmative action case. Anthony Lewis's Gideon's Trumpet book seems to be the first of this kind.

Kens' book is by far the best of its type that I have read. The other books of this genre I've read in this genre deal too much with the proceedings of a case. For instance, Mr. Chadha had this legal problem, he got this lawyer, they went through this legal proceeding, they had to refine their arguments, they went to the next appellate court, blah blah blah. Frankly these kinds of details are boring, and give little if any insight into the importance of a given case.

Kens's has a different approach. Instead of going into great detail about why Mr. Lochner picked a given lawyer, Kens goes into great detail of the impetuses for the passage of the law that Mr. Lochner was challenging. He talks about the social and political climate of the times, tying in influential theories of the day like Social Darwinism and laissez-faire economics. Kens clearly places the case of Lochner v. New York in its historical framework. This, it seems, is a superior method for studying an important case like this one.

I would strongly urge this book to any professor teaching a constitional law/history class. I would also strongly recommend it to a student looking for a good introduction to the study of substantive due process.

Great resourse!
This was the text book used in a logic class I took. The book covers truth functions, truth tables, conditional proofs, indirect proofs, predicate logic, truth trees, syllogistic logic, inductive logic, axiomatic systems and a few other lesser used logical systems. Each section is explained clearly and with great attention to detail. As it is a text-book, every chapter ends with several problems for the reader to solve. There are lots and lots of examples that help to hammer the concept home if the reader has become stuck on some of the more difficult passages. This book is a great teacher and is an excellent resource for anyone who is interested in logic.

Note: The book has a URL where one can find information about errors, corrections and updates. The first error listed on the web-page is a typographical error in the URL that's written in the book. If I did not know better, I'd swear that the authors were trying to demonstrate circular logic.

A great find for anyone interested in Madagascar
Not many guidebooks venture into both Madagascar AND the Comoros, and I was glad to find one that did - and was even happier to find a "Lonely Planet" guide. Always complete, easy to read, and helpful, this guide is no exception to their standards. Although I haven't travelled to Madagascar yet, this book seems to give quite an honest assesment of travel conditions (not always the best/unpredictible) which I really appreciated. For the 4th largest island, Madagascar doesn't have enough information about it out there - I was glad to find this book, and am secure that it is a reliable source.
