A marvelous read, especially for a hiking guide
Over the past 25 years I've bought dozens of Pacific Northwest hiking guides and this is just about the most enjoyable one I've ever owned. It is about the only hiking guide I've ever sat down and systematically read from cover to cover, simply because it was such a joy to read and because it contained so many treasures. The author isn't merely interested in telling you how to get there and how not to miss a turn in the trail, but he shows a genuine love for each of these hikes, pointing out what is amazing about each of them, often giving a little history about the trail or other anecdotes associated with a hike, including personal experiences which are genuinely amusing or informative. I especially enjoy his appreciation of trails through old growth forests, something you don't often see in hiking guides. Most hiking guides seem to get worked up only by big, expansive views, but this author sees beauty and magnificence on all scales. Although I was familiar with at least half of these hikes, I learned about a lot of new ones that I've already started exploring. For example, check out the old growth noble firs along the PCT from Barlow Pass to the overlooks at White River Canyon. These trees are absolutely mind-boggling, not because they're big around but because they grow so amazingly tall and straight. It stimulated me to read more about these trees and I learned that they can soar into such heights with so little girth because the wood is hard and light. No Douglas Fir could get this tall without putting six feet of girth on themselves. Here you see flawless, branchless trunks as straight as nature can make them, no more than three to four feet in diameter with no perceptible taper rising two hundred feet like the pillars in a cathedral before finally displaying a puff of foliage at the top no more than 15 feet wide and 30 feet tall. And then the emerald forest of moss-infested silver firs and mountain hemlocks that follow closer to timberline have the head shaking in wonder over such stunning beauty. Thanks to this author, I discovered this incredibly beautiful section of trail after hiking all over Mt. Hood for 25 years without having discovered it. There are lots of other new possibilities of this magnitude for me that I am eager to try out, thanks to the enthusiasm and attention to detail of this author.

Well written and well researched
An excellent guide for day trips around Portland. The author is an acqaintance of mine and on several occasions I witnessed the care with which he took in making book an accurate guide to Portland-area hiking. Gerald is a great writer and he not only gives you the details of the hike (like clear directions on how to get there, an art all too often lost in Portland hiking books), but puts the hike in a brief desciptive context of history, forestry and asthetics that is rare in a hiking book. The book helps the hiker know more about Oregon and its natural treasures.

An excellent Hiking Guide for NW Oregon and SW Washington
60 Hikes Within 60 Miles : Portland (60 Hikes Within 60 Miles)
by Paul Gerald is incredibly well written and includes great maps and a rating system that is very useful. I just love my copy and strongly recomend this book to those looking to get out into the great outdoors.

602 Laughs!
This book is great! Paul is truly a comic genius! I found myself laughing out loud alot while reading this, sometimes even hours after reading the book! I would definately recommend this book to anyone who has ever been annoyed with or by anything.

Cosmopolitan Laughter!
WoW! This gem is a must for the ever conscious consumer who wants to know that they are not alone in this crazy technology world. Simple and notorious examples of how life has gotten more difficult from the days of our grandparents. When the day has got you down, reach for the book and let your mind wander with laughter.

602 reasons to be pissed off, by paul nardizzi
Paul's humor is second to none. In order for one to receive the full affect, I highly recommend everyone should see him live on stage. He will keep you laughing the entire show. The book displays his unique dry sense of humor however, the actual presentation is well worth a trip to one of his shows. And I guarantee after you've seen one, you will go time and time again. You will want to take all your friends and family to share the experience.

Great resource for nervous First Time Parents
This book was a great resource for us as first time parents. We were both nervous about the many procedures that are preformed during the course of pre-natal care. This book helped to answer the questions that our OB/GYN left kind of hazy, like the AFP Testing & Sonogram. All the procedures were explained in terms you could understand easily & helped ease our minds at each step. We were able to be more comfortable during the procedures & confident we were making the right choices for our baby.

A valuable resource for lay persons
In our society today educated and well-intentioned people have put forth and encouraged the belief that religion and science are as incompatible as oil and water. This is not so. I have had the unique opportunity to participate actively in both disciplines: religion and science. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Denver and a Master of Arts in Theology from Wartburg Theological Seminary. I read Keith and Laurie Wexler's book while researching prenatal diagnosis issues in preparation for a bio-ethics presentation; and, again, as I wrote my Master's Integrative Project paper. In addition to being designed in an easily accessible manner, I found this book to be a valuable resource for anyone, whether in the healthcare field or not, who wishes to receive the best care afforded by today's changing technology and highly-trained specialists. As a guide for pregnancy testing and issues it was reassuring to have a quick reference for important questions during my wife's pregnancy, ultrasound and amniocentesis. The author was careful to present information in a non-biased perspective to avoid offending the reader's own political and religious sensitivities. This is no small matter as there are many books on this subject which are slanted in one direction or another making their use unpalatable regardless of their pertinence to the subject matter. Most importantly, this book helps dispel one regrettable myth held particularly in the religious community, that prenatal diagnosis and testing are useful only in the eventual termination of the unborn child. As a person of business and a theologian, I recommend The ABC's of Prenatal Diagnosis: A Guide to Pregnancy Testing and Issues to anyone preparing for a pregnancy or seeking answers to important questions during pregnancy.

Informative and invaluable to expecting parents.
This authoratative guide to pre-natal diagnostic testing is a must for all expecting mothers (and fathers) who want to better understand the choices presented to them by their doctors when it comes to prenatal testing. Finally, an easy to read book on things like:

a. What is an AFP and is high or low a good thing?

b. What are the risks involved with an "Amnio" (short for Amniocentesis)?

c. What is a CVS?

d. What are my options with ectopic pregancies?

e. What should I expect from my insurance companies?

This very informative book helps provide the context for a more effective discussion of options with any OB/GYN, and helps provide insights into the inner workings of the medical industry. Use this guide to help make the best decisions for you and your child.

The BEST of Information I've found in one book!!!!!!
The author tells us what we need to know as parents and how to guide the educational system. THIS SHOULD BE REQUIRED READING FOR EDUCATORS!!!!!

new hope for me
I am an ADHD female and I found this book very helpfull.I can now pay attention better and curve my impusivity. The strategies were very helpfull and I am now an A student without medicine.I am also not ashamed of having ADHD anymore.

A well-written, compehensive look at ADHD in Teens. A gem!
Ms. Alexander-Roberts' second book on the topic carries on where her first book, "The ADHD Parenting Handbook", leaves off. She has written an excellent, well-researched book that provides in-depth information on living with the teenager with ADHD. She covers the most important concerns well. These include: parenting strategies that work; the use of medication; and the positive aspects of having ADHD. She also discusses helping your teen say "no" to drugs; other co-existing disorders that may be present, but often go undiagnosed and untreated; and many other topics important to parents of ADHD teens. Highly recommended

I hate to compare them, but it's as fun as Narnia or Tolkien
The second in the Passages series by Paul McCusker, this book chronicles how the young boy Wade accidentally entered into the world of Marus while in the fit of a fever. He finds himself in the shelter of a man named Arin. After being cared for by Arin and his family, Arin tells Wade that it has been revealed to him by the Unseen One (Who is known in our world as God) that there would be a great judgment because of the wickedness of the Marusians. Arin doesn't know what it will be, but the final sign before the disaster would be the appearance of a blond-haired boy. Blond hair doesn't exist in Marus. Wade goes against Arin's warning, and ventures out into the danger of Marus beyond Arin's compound walls. He finds himself captured, and taken before a man who wishes to further the sciences of Marus - no matter what the cost. Soon Wade finds himself in the middle of political controversy, and a tyrant's rule, all the while trying to escape...Arin's Judgment.

I really enjoyed Paul McCusker's Passages series...there's some sort of part of the human brain that relishes stories of other worlds, be it Narnia or Middle-Earth. This, added with the wonderful re-telling of the story of Noah make this book a cool read.

For the parents: I'm only a teenager myself, so I figure I should let any parents know whether or not their kids would want to read this. Of course, there's some graphic stuff that happens...there's some description of the plague that hits Marus, a palace is blown up, a man is killed by the flaming shards (and implied that several more are), a boy has a dream of skeletal figures attacking him...some stuff like this might make some people sensitive to that kind of thing hesitant, but I thought they were pretty cool myself...and it's only as violent as your imagination lets you think of.

A great book
I loved this book. It's set in times parallel to bible times. This book is intense at times, so I wouldn't recomend it for kids much younger than 10. If your child loves to read, or you're looking for a book ot teach him about God, this one is perfect. I hope this has helped you, and thank you for your time.

Impressive
An old story in a new world. Many of us dream of going to parallel world's and visiting alein's. But what if we did go to a different world and visit not alein's but real people just like you and me?Then to top it off you don't even know that you're not on your planet anymore. The only way your realize it is all of the people of the people of Marus(a town)have never heard of Odyssey or The United States of America. A book of twists and turns that will leave you dazzled and dazed. WONDERFUL

I'm a teenager, and I LOVE these books
A cool new way to learn the story of David ("Darien") from the Old Testament, while also touching the "Other Worlds" lobe that makes things like this, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Lord of the Rings books so cool.

Kyle and Anna accidentally stumble into the world of Marus while exploring an old shack in the woods. Each is quickly caught up in the action from different sides, while trying to figure out what in the world happened. They soon discover they're under the protection of the Unseen One, known in our world as God.

I began reading this book, and I honestly couldn't put it down; fortunately, it was on a weekend! It's pretty awesome, because instead of a slingshot, Darien uses a pocket knife. Instead of a sword, Darien uses a pistol and a saber. Marus is in a Western type of time frame for this story, and that is one thing that helps this book to work so well.

I'm already a fan of Focus on the Family's Adventures in Odyssey, and this book contains some elements of the series, but it can function on its own, for sure.

If you like this one (and I can almost promise you will), you'll want to check out the other five titles.

Passages; Darien's Rise
Have you ever wondered how people think of God in another world? In the book Passages; Darein's Rise by Paul McCuster, two yuong children, Kyle and Anna were venturing through an old abandoned huose when they found themselves in a diffrent world. Kyle ends up in a castle and Anna ends up in King Lawrence's closet. Both are surprised, they didn't know where they were. Soon they find out they were in Marus. Marus is on a world that has two moons, one was white and the other was a light orange. Marus is also a country that stroungly beleives in the Unseen One. Thruogh out the story the King goes mad and looses his faith in the Unseen One, which causes him to want to kill his best general. Kyle and Anna were sent by the Unseen One as a protector and a vioce. kyle is the protector and Anna is the vioce. Kyle keeps getting these weird feelings and Anna keeps having these wierd dreams. Eyes of two colors in Marus means you were sent by the Unseen One as a vioce. Will Kyle and Anna ever make it home? Does the King succeed in his plot to kill the general? To find out I invite you to read Passages; Darein's Rise by Paul McCuster.

Darien's Rise
I thought this book was a great re-telling of the King Saul and David story.I can't wait to read the next one! I think Darien's a great charactor. I'm 11 years old and I loved this book.

A scholar's triumph, too.
The texts of many Eighteenth Century books are full of interpolations by printers and may contain thousands of edits by the author, too. What Dr. Brack has done is to identify and evaluate EVERY variant to assemble a DEFINITIVE TEXT. He's spent a lifetime tracking down what Smollett actually wrote. If you want to know what Smollet wrote, and not his printer, read an edition that Dr. Brack has collated. These volumes are triumphs of scholarship as well as a service to readers.

A Baby In A Silk Hat Playing With Dynomite.
I read this book for the first time over 20 years ago, and I must admit it shaped my life. When I have kids (twin boys preferably) I will see to it that Machiavelli's Prince, and Smollet's Fathom are mandatory reading.

Fathom-the penultimate candy stealer!
As you are lead through the life and adventures of FCF, you realize just how villanous a handsone dandy can be. Whistling as he makes love to your daughter so as not to let on that he is picking the lock on your safe with a toothpick between his toes definately displays a sense of arrogance that one must admire!

Algebra

a book not to be missed
Mathematicians and lovers of algebra: this is it. This has been the best algebra book I have seen since the mid 1980s. The explanations and proofs are clear and easy to follow. One could only wish that other authors could write like prof. Cohn does. it is extremely unfortunate that the publisher (Wiley & Sons) has kept this book, and the other two (Algebra vol.2 and vol.3) out of stock and/or out of print for so long. Maybe one day these three books will once again be more accessible in the US.

Superb!
I entirely agree with the reviewer from Tokyo. The book is comprehensive, and at the same time the presentation is very humane. It's time to assign every other textbook to the flames and start using this one in every respectable algebra course. I envy those English students who have had the course from the author himself.

Both elegant and lucid. Highly recommended.
One of the best textbooks on algebra (together with Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 that cover more advanced topics.) Far more accessible than the textbook by Serge Lang.

This book is a treasure!
As a parent and teacher of young girls, I found this book to be an inspiration. My 8 year old daughter enjoyed all of the poems and reading them together sparked several discussions about some of the heroines, especially the lesser known women. The illustrations are beautiful. What a great gift for a young girl!

All by Herself: 14 Girls Who Made a Difference
Story of 14 young women, who are heros, some famous, some not. Poems are wonderful, and explain just why each girl is a hero. Illustrations are beautiful and in color. This is an excellent biography book and I would recommend it for students from the 4th grade up, and to the teachers and parents, alike.

Wish my girls had this inspiration when they were children!
The best book I have ever read for making the link between wonderful acts of imagination and/or courage in childhood and the larger than life heros these women became. This has got to be a christmas or birthday book for reading to or by girls from 5 to 10.
