A must for any would be visitor to Uganda
Having lived in Uganda and also know Paul and was there when he compiled the book, I can say that it is a very reasonable account of the diverse lives of the people of Uganda. He has managed to include most parts of Uganda - the problem being that you will wish to visit them all!

This is the experience of Uganda in one location!
This book gives a complete, beautiful look at "the pearl of Africa." If you are thinking of visiting Uganda and want to know what to expect or if you have been to the country and want to savor the experience, this book is a must! Paul Joynson-Hicks photographs a little of everything and the photography is beautiful. There is also a great overview of Uganda's history. I can't say enough....get this book and it will take you to Uganda again and again!!

Bravo! A job well done!
This was an amazing book! The short stories are really wonderful and I know I would be visibly enlightened if I knew where Paul Jennings gets his inspiration. I really loved at the very very end about him and how he used to roll a ball of yarn under his bed to check if there were any monsters or such creatures, where on earth could he dream up such a fantastic idea and at such a young age! This book is truly stunning and if you love laughing, you'll love "Uncanny!"

Cool cool cool!!
This is a wicked book! Heaps of short stories, its sooo funny! Each has a funny and suprising, sometimes even scary, twist at the end. I would read it if I were you.

Outstanding book from one of the best people I've ever known
I had the privilege of being one of Dr. Saltman's students in 1998 and 1999 at the University of California, San Diego. After taking his courses in metabolic biochemistry and nutrition, and after reading this EXCELLENT book from cover to cover at least five times, I can tell you that Dr. Saltman's methods are rock-solid. Rather than focusing on any type of "fad diet", Dr. Saltman lays out the scientific basis - the what, when, and why of nutrition- in an easy-to-follow regimen. He helps deconstruct the myths of unsound diets and dietary techniques, and instead guides the reader to the understanding of WHAT we need and WHY we need it. I took his course in nutrition at UCSD (a 10 week course) and lost 45 pounds in the process. And never once did I feel hungry, tired or "cheated" out of favorite foods.

Dr. Saltman was not only one of the most motivational instructors I've ever had in my life, but also one of the best mentors I have ever had. He was the biggest student advocate I have ever known, and I am honored to have been one of his students. He is sorely missed and loved here in the scientific community at UCSD (and everywhere else, for that matter), but his sound beliefs and wisdom live on in this book. Do yourself a favor and go buy a copy. It will forever change the way you look at food, exercise, nutrition and weight management.

An unbiased, sensible, and readable guide to nutrition
In this book, Paul Saltman approachs nutrition from the point of view of "What does the human body need to be healthy?". That makes this book a refreshing change from the typical approach, which is to dream up an unusual, usually misguided, diet regimen, then concentrate on selling as many books about it as possible.

He starts with the idea of TPN, total parenteral nutrition, which is how people who have had their gastro-intestinal tract removed are kept alive and healthy. TPN is administered intravenously, and so delivers nutrients directly into the blood. Over the years, physicians have identified 44 nutrients (water, sugars, minerals, vitamins, etc) that must be in the bag in order for people on TPN to stay alive and healthy. Guess how much Vitamin C goes into the bag? Answer: the recommended daily allowance. Duh!

Saltman returns to the idea of TPN often, as a starting point for his very readable discussions of all of the nutrients, starting with water. Along the way, he debunks a lot of ridiculous diets, and what a relief that is (yes! I can eat some fat! I can eat some sugar!). He has no axe to grind, no magic protein drink to sell, no line of sportswear, just this excellent book.

I keep the book handy, as a reference. I plan to buy copies for all the people that I care for.

Unfortunately, Dr. Saltman died on August 27, 1999.

Solid Gold Classic
Here is a book full of wisdom from one who has lived his life to the fullest! One of those wonderful true accounts of a self made man living justly, loving mercy and walking humbly with God. In addition to buying a copy for my family, I bought this book for my college nephew as I believe this book has all the necessary elements for encouraging a young person to set goals and strive for success without compromising personal integrity and devotion to the Lord. Don't miss the great thought provoking review questions in the back of the book! Mr. Meyer is in the same genre as Zig Ziglar, Norman Vincent Peale and Dale Carnegie. This is an incredible value...!! You've got to read this book!

Success is not a dirty word
Starting my own business has been very difficult. I have tried to find books that not only provide some hope or knowledge but also keep my focus on what matters (ie. family and God). This book explains how to obtain your goals whatever they may be(more time with the kids, increase income, or better life with spouse). For me this book represents one important truth, which is you don't have to be poor to be a Christian. Great Book!!

Ventriloquism Made Easy: How to Talk to Your Hand Without Looking Stupid!

One of my favorite and FUNNIEST how to do "vent" books!
As someone who got interested in ventriloquism (and eventually dumped a 20 year newspaper career to work with WOODEN dummies) I was often frustrated reading how-to-do-ventriloquism books. Most were either amazingly boring, unknowingly pompous, or filled with cutsey-comments that seemingly padded an explanation of what I believe is actually a relatively easy "art" (if you are nutty enough to practice in front of a mirror until you perfect the "hard" letters). This is one of my FAVORITE now to do ventriloquism books -- and to this day it remains the funniest. I still do a routine in my show based on the structure of one of Paul Stadelman's classic bits (I have long since replaced the actual jokes). The late Paul Stadelman was a "classic" and I believe underrated vent who performed, taught and was on television for many years. And this book is worth it's price just for the zippy routines with Stadelman and his dummy Windy Higgins. These don't go on and on with long set-ups but are punchy, quick pay-off bits (and if Stadelman used a pun it was seldom groan-inducing). Stadelman was clearly more influenced by vaudeville and comedy teams than by other ventriloquists (which I think is GOOD). At the least these routines help readers understand routine construction and setup-joke structure. The late, wonderful Col. Bill Boley (another performer who deserved a higher national profile since there are zillions of ventriloquists running around doing bits of his published work and others who painstakingly "emulate" his original routines) was the only other ventriloquist whose published routines came CLOSE to doing this. And to TEACH you vent? This book has it all. It gives you the substitute letters (to say for the hard letters) and words to practice to perfect them. It also tells you how to make a puppet out of your hand, gives you performing tips, has some great ventriloquism-related photos, and and list of suppliers and organizations (some of this is outdated now). If someone was interested in "vent" and had this book, George Schindler's Ventriloquism: Magic With Your Voice and the in-its-own-class Maher Studios correspondence course they'd have it all. Plus, if they have this book they're going to also have some BIG laughs while reading it. Paul Stadelman is truly ventriloquism's unsung hero!

A must for budding Ventriloquists!
Learn how to throw your voice! Make your hand talk, your shoe sing, and your mother-in-law shut up! Everyone will be tongue-tied when you start talking to the lamp shade -- and it talks back!

Paul Stadelman, a professional ventriloquist who starred on his own television show for many years, shares with you the secrets that have made him a hilarious success.

Ventriloquism, as taught in this book, is easy to learn. If you follow a few simple rules, anybody can do it. And it's so fun that once you start, you'll be talking to yourself for hours.

This book explains how to use standard puppets as well as novelty figures such as balloon animals and gym socks. Includes 22 complete comedy dialogues to get you started. All outrageously funny.

An Invaluable Resource
In brief, a "Mimir's Well" if you will about all things norse. These well organized and documented volumes are excellent as a general summary, as well as a starting point for how to read the Sagas themselves. Very little is left out, and many facts and details of norse life are included that one might never thought documented (in particular norse entertainments, games, sports, and the Idrott--war skills all warriors were expected to learn).

simply a "bible" for all viking history fans
This book contains almost all there is to know about the mighty vikings,,, its many quotes, from Sagas and other "ouvrages" about vikings, uplights every subject treated in it. Very well written, understandable to all ( even for those who are not familiar with viking history ). I think it gives a new way of view on vikings; different from the "Hollywoodian view". I really enjoyed reading it and I would recommand it to everyone who is interested in the subject,,,Truly a great learning experience!!!

Beyond the Purple Gang
This is a great successor and companion to Kavieff's previous volume, The Purple Gang, and an even better book than its predecessor. Covers the Mafia factions who succeeded the Purples as masters of Detroit's underworld and various independent mobs, some unheralded since their last appearances in 1930's vintage detective magazines, such as "Legs" Laman's kidnapping gang, or the "Flatheads" gang headed by Paul Jaworski who committed the nation's first armored car robbery. Violent crimes have soared in volume over the years but for sheer audacity "crime in the streets" pales in comparison to the 1920's and The Violent Years captures this spirit better than any book I've seen in a long while.

Pulls no punches
In The Violent Years: Prohibition And The Detroit Mobs, author Paul Kavieff draws upon his many years of meticulous research to provide an accurate, harsh, brutal look at the tremendous wealth and unspeakable savagery of organized crime in Prohibition-era Detroit. Turning an unflinching spotlight upon the gangster's worst excesses, The Violent Years pulls no punches in its sordid, factual, carefully researched account. Also highly recommended for students of organized crime in twentieth century American history is Paul Kavieff's companion volume The Purple Gang: Organized Crime In Detroit 1910-1945 (1569801479, $...).

Read "Wake Up America" we need a strong military again.
America defense forces has become weak. We cannot put our troups in Iraq and Korea at the same time. We have cut our defenses back to far. There are so many potential hot spots in the Middle East and Central Asia in the next decade that we must return to strength. A must to read. Lets Wake Up America!

An incredible true story of WW-II with a lesson for today.
The book keeps you going and you will find that you will not lay it down. A side to WW-II I have never read before. There is a lesson in the book as to why America should wake up and keep our military strong.
