Frisky fun for singles--and couples!
My review copy of this one has more dog ears than the local kennel, and even though I'm married I'll be using the romantic tips I've bookmarked to keep my husband guessing...and smiling. Great fun mixed with romantic tips and seductive seductions means you can't go wrong with this light, romantic reading. Give it to, or read it for, someone you love right now!

C. G. Jung--the haunted prophet

Penetrating portrait confronts Jung's moral dark side.
Most Jung biographers rightfully extol the man's creative genius while paying scant attention to his moral deficiencies. Stern's portrait is more balanced, also chronicling events such as Jung's decision to accept the position as head of the German Psychoanalytic Society under the Hitler regime, after the prior Jewish head had been removed. Not the only Jung bio one should read, but an important complement to others.

Fair effort
This is a fair effort by one of Ireland's preeminant Marxist historians. A concise history which covers the generalities, but errs in the minor details. Bew swallows hook, line and sinker the oft-repeated, but now discredited story about Parnell forcing Isaac Butt from the leadership of the HRCGB

Calculus warm-ups and lesson-starters.
This book contains 87 "explorations" which are organized by topic. Each exploration page consists of about 7 problems and the pages are organized by topic. There is an exploration for almost every topic covered in a standard calculus class. The solutions are concisely and thoroughly written. Overall, I think the authors have done an excellent job writing this book.

Gold Rush visited
A wondeful read if one likes the California Gold Rush as a time period. Like the other WW books, its an engaging read. My quabbles with the book is its time frame; how much time passes in this book is beyond me. A few months? 4 years? I also do not like how Elisabeta had such an ignoble end. Still, this is the novel to read for inspiration on the Gold Rush.

Pithy and Precise
Calvin was a Calvinist as Paul Helm shows by his response to R. T. Kendall's work, "Calvin and English Calvinism to 1649". The only drawback I see with this fine little volume is that one would first need to be familiar with Kendall's work. Otherwise the reader would be lost. I first purchased Helm's book thinking it was a primer on Calvinism. While it may well serve this purpose, I discovered the need to obtain Kendall's book(no simple task) and then read Helm's response. Helm adroitly disabuses Kendall's notion that Calvin believed in a universal atonement, demonstrating that the English Calvinists were indeed his heirs and not merely those of Theodore Beza. While the discussion may be a bit out-of-date, it is not uncommon to find many with a propensity for the doctrines of grace who reject the concept of limited atonement. Hence Helm's book is still a valuble resource.

Nice story
"Cambios para Josefina" is just as good as it's English counterpart. Josefina and her sisters are planning a fandango. It'll be the first time Josefina plays the piano during a fandango, and she's looking forward to it. While she plays the song, Josefina's father asks Tia Dolores to dance. The next day, Tia Dolores announces that she wants to leave the rancho and go to Santa Fe to live with her parents. Josefina and her sisters are determined to find a way to get Tia Dolores to stay. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the American Girls Collection and can read Josefina's stories in Spanish as well.

An excellent introduction to a vast subject
Although my shelves are loaded with histories of the Broadway musical, there is always room for one more. So I really looked forward to reading "The Cambridge Companion to The Musical" (Cambridge University Press, 2002). When I saw there were only 265 pages of text (not counting bibliography and index), I doubted that they could adequately cover the field. Soon I began to realize that the "field" included American and British musicals, film musicals and film versions of stage musicals, and even recordings; and I just settled down to enjoy what amounts to a series of essays covering all these fields, none of them adequately but all of them interestingly.

There are fourteen chapters by various writers, organized into three parts. The first deals with "Adaptations and transformations before 1940" and includes essays on the early days of the American musical theatre in general, then in New York, operetta on both sides of the Atlantic, the Afro-American as depicted on stage, and the American musicals of the 1920s and 1930s. Part II covers the years from 1940 to 1970 and discusses the British theatre, Rodgers and Hammerstein, their successors, and Weill and Bernstein. Part III picks up the story with a disproportionately long chapter on Sondheim, the fully integrated musical, the film musical, rock, and the megamusical--which brings us into the present century with a lot of questions yet to be answered by way of projection.

In short, there are plenty of ideas packed into this short book and each one can lead you in several directions if you wish to follow up this or that idea. There are one or two piddling errors, such as calling "Yip Yip Yaphank" an "all-sailor vaudeville"; but in general what is said here is trustworthy, the opinions (mostly positive) about certain works and composers are informed opinions, the organization is very good. The few pictures, however, are not very helpful.

Yes, I would recommend this highly for those who want to begin to understand the complex evolution of the musical play by way of enough examples to form a solid basis before going on to books that deal with each of these topics in more detailed and expanded way.
