Graphics / Black & White fans MUST BUY
Another beautiful collection from Walker Evans, showing his greatest photos of billboards, movie posters, newspaper headlines, theater marquees, graffiti, street signs, hand-painted shop frotns, covering 1920-1975. You will discover variety of ways to interpret the different layers of meanings from his photos with striking impression. It provides an excellent documentary about American culture. Walker Evans also collected and exhibited signs, sometimes next to his photographs, which brings his work into another level. From letters to graphics, from graphics to signs, sometimes people is becoming helpless under the mass media. Highly recommended for graphics / black and white fans.

Just Beautiful!
Walker Evans SIGNS are unique and wonderful. These images glow in there black and white surroundings. Some of the images are simple and delicate and other are busy and loud...a great mixure.Codrescu's essays give you a delightful walk through of Evans life.Andrei has an original insight... description of these signs from our past. There is excitment in these essays...energy in which Evans must have had as he photographed these images. As you read on you will see Evans attraction to signs. I also enjoyed the layout of the book. The images have room to breath and the text is perfect. I was very happy to add this book with my collection of photography books.

The best book I have read in a long time
This is an awesome book!!! I loved it, I am not usually into the whole Sci-fi reading, but this book seems like it really could be happening. I hightly recomend it!

Hardcore New World
Back in the early '80s, probably 1982, my friend Paul Knorr handed me a novel and said something like, "Read this. You'll like it." I perused the cover, emblazoned with some fairly typical sci-fi soldier, and, humoring him, asked what it was about.

"It's about soldiers," he said. "They fight, then they have sex, then they do drugs, then they fight some more." Encouraging. Nonetheless, I accepted the book and read it. In short, War Games, by Karl Hansen and Kenneth Paul Rogers, is one of the most lurid, powerful works of science fiction I have ever read, a mutant cross between Aldous Huxley's Brave New World and Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers, with a solid dose of S&M and narcotics abuse thrown in for good measure.

The 1981 novel was followed four years later by Dream Games, which was written by Hansen alone. War Games is far superior to Dream Games as a military science fiction novel. However, the latter book explores the workings of Hansen's universe in greater depth and provides answers to questions posed in the earlier work. Dream Games ends with a separatist invasion armada ringing Earth and preparing to launch a crushing attack -- bleak yes, but also inviting a sequel. A sequel that to date has not been forthcoming.

From a gaming point of view, especially that of role-playing, Hansen's books are ideal in that throughout them they describe a broad variety of weapons, armor, equipment, augmentations, and genetically manufactured races, and clearly delineate the socio-political and military environments his protagonists inhabit. Of course, the books are damned from a role-playing point of view, in that many parents would undoubtedly become upset if they knew just what sort of books their kid's new game was based on. Nonetheless, those of us who have both read Hansen and played TSR's Star Frontiers cannot fail to notice uncanny similarities between the arsenals of the books and the game.

Since reading War Games and Dream Games, I have continued to search for other works by Karl Hansen, but from what I can tell he only wrote those two. I have always wondered what happened to him, and sometimes entertain the notion that the righteous citizens of whatever town he lived in decided that burning him in effigy just wouldn't be good enough ... To my knowledge, the only other thing Kenneth Paul Rogers has written is some true crime book (which I have not read) about a convicted rapist-murderer. Maybe that would shed some light on the whole Hansen-Rogers disappearing act. And maybe I don't want to know.

A lucid and comprehensive account of the war in Bosnia
I have read many books in which the authors attempt to account for the causes of the Bosnian conflict. The problem with these books is that the authors provide an oversimplified and shallow description of the war in Bosnia. This book however manages to give a thorough and in-depth analysis of the causes of the Bosnian conflict. In my opinion, the authors have managed to explain which political and social factors gave rise to the war in Bosnia. Giving a detailed historical background of the conflict, the authors allow the reader to gain an important insight into historical events that may have contributed to the enormous disparities among Muslims, Croats and Serbs. In addition, the involvement of Serbia and Croatia in the Bosnian war is thoroughly examined. There is ample evidence that Serbia and Croatia provided Bosnian Serbs and Croats with arms. Furthermore it is well known that Serbian forces committed a large majority of the war crimes in Bosnia. In conclusion, this book will help you gain a richer understanding of the Bosnian conflict. Strongly recommended.

The definitive work on Bosnia
Burg and Shoup's book will stand for some years as the definitive work on the Bosnian war and the missteps of international intervention there. It is a must read by anyone interested in what happened in that mountainous Balkan country.

This book is rather detailed and is not meant to be a 'quick read' for the casual reader. Instead, it uses a vast array of sources from the region as well as the Western press and interviews to make its case about the goals of the three sides as well as the desire of the 'West' to stay out of the conflict. Furthermore, it provides a much-needed and accessible overview of the various peace plans and maps which aimed at stopping the carnage in Bosnia.

It is an excellent book which sets a new standard for research on ethnic conflicts and international policy.

A must-read for physical chemists
For example, read the FM Tao chapter for an excellent discussion on the solvent effect of individual water molecules, which paradoxically can cause gas-to-solid conversions in the atmosphere, resulting in aerosol (fine particle) pollution, which is an invisible human health threat worldwide, but especially in the US.

The chapter by Tao
The chapter by FM Tao is very good. It examines a number of interesting phenomena that occur with only a few water molecules, including remarkable gas - to - dissolved solid transitions that occur in the atmosphere, and are a key element in aerosol formation in the atmosphere, which has been implicated as a major factor in fine particle pollution. Fine particles are very toxic and have been estimated as causing as much premature mortality in the USA as traffic accidents do!

So, there is a connection here between understanding the first events in aerosol formation, and a major public health problem in this country!

A wonderful, laugh-out-loud book!
I recently read this book as a part of a children's literature class for education students and it was fantastic. For anyone who hasn't read any of Christopher Paul Curtis' books, this one would be a great to start with. The books tells the story of the Watson family and their visit to Grandma's house in Alabama. A family of three children and their parents go through the funny and familiar routines of school, work, friends and the "wool pooh". It has many moments where the reader can completely relate to the characters and it also gives a side to younger readers about the time era in whic the story takes place. I do agree with other reviews that this book could definately be used in an elementary school setting and it gives children a different perspective on the lives of an African-American family in 1963. Also, being from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, I can really relate to the Watsons, since they lived in Flint, Michigan. I recommend this book to anyone, especially younger readers and teachers whom might use this in their classrooms. Also, if you like this book, you will also like another book by Curtis called "Bud, Not Buddy."

Outstanding! My students love it!
I am a 5th grade teacher and my students really enjoyed listening to me read this book! In their words, it is realistic and funny! They could really relate to the characters and couldn't wait to hear more!

A Bridge Between Indigenous People and Environmentalists
Enmeshed in the high-tech, hyperspeed, information-age economy, it's easy for most of us to forget that we simply cannot survive without clean air, clean water, clean soil. It's also easy to shrug off your concerns by thinking, "What can one person do?" Corbin Harney, a spiritual leader of the Western Shoshone tribe, demonstrates what one person with a vision can do. "The Way It Is" is a wake-up call. It lays out Harney's vision of the law of life, the law that native peoples have always understood--that we have only one planet to take care of.

Since 1985, Harney and other Western Shoshone people have been fighting against nuclear weapons testing in Nevada. (The Nevada Test Site occupies land that the federal government illegally seized from the tribe in the 1940s to use for weapons testing.) The elderly Harney has totally dedicated himself to healing people, healing the land, and--most important--sharing his vision about the damage that nuclear pollution and other environmental abuses are doing to the land, air, and water. In down-to-earth, direct language, Mr. Harney lays out his beliefs and speaks directly to your heart.

His vision about water is alarming: "One time...when I was praying for the water, the water said to me, 'I'm going to look like water, but pretty soon nobody's going to use me.' Now, wherever I go, the people talk about their water being contaminated, and they can't use it."

Harney leads ceremonies and healing rituals on tribal land in Nevada and travels the Earth to talk to whomever will listen, telling them to pray for the Earth.

Over the years, he has achieved the stature of a moral authority for the Earth. He says, "I pray in the mornings for the sun, the air, the water, plants, the animals, the rocks. Those prayers have been passed on down from way back for thousands of years, but we haven't been doing enough of these things, of taking care of things, and now we have to come back to it. We are going to have to start taking care of things again."

Voices of the Voiceless
I have toured the USA with a production of BRUNDIBAR, the children's opera from Theresienstadt, for two years and I served on the Alabama Holocaust Commission. To truly understand Theresienstadt (Terezin) and the Holocaust this is a MUST read. Here, in their own words are relfections, poetry, and day to day recollections of Hitler's "model camp" known as Theresienstadt through the eyes of the boys from L417 who were between 12-14 years old. The book details the beginnings of the "Republic of Shkid" and using photographs, poetry, and authentic works of art, the book gives the reader a truly rare and inspiring glimpse into concentration camp life. If you really dare to begin to understand anything about the Holocaust then begin with this book! Vedem - "In the Lead" will forever lead me!

emotional ride into the odyssey of the terror of the Terezin
As the daughter of one of the authors I have heard all the stories of the holocaust and how the boys of room L417 found refuge in "Vedem" without their parents. I believe strongly that had the boys survived they would have shared a lot with the world. By simply reading a few lines of Petr Ginz's poems, art and stories you realise that he would have excelled had he had the chance which unfortunetely was cruelly torn from him. Even worse is the fact that he was not alone. Most readers do not realise that they were little boys who were taken out of their homes and away from all that they knew before the age 15 and some as young as 10.This book relates to children because it does not describe in detail the horrors but more so the small "joys" of the camp. Adults can relate because the work and articles emit the feelings of the citizens in hell. Therefore this book is truly a wonderful piece of work. For those who are interested: the book will be published in paperback soon.

Impartial review?
Chris Yeh is Mr. Kuegler's partner at his consulting firm.

I would question the objectivity of the previous review.

Please also place no credence in my rating of five stars, I have yet to receive my copy.

A clear and practical guide to an often-confusing industry.
The web advertising and marketing is extremely confusing. Almost everything I've ever been told has been a lie. In sharp contrast, Kuegler's book tells hard truths, backed up with very specific examples. He focuses on companies and techniques that have flown below the mainstream radar screen, and delivers information that any marketer or entrepreneur can use.

Just right
This is an extremely thorough, well-written book that covers web services from the ground up. Not tied to any one company's philosophy or implementation of web services standards, this book approaches the subject at a high level yet full of detail. Unlike most technical books, this books reads like a novel. I give it my highest recommendation for those of you that want to understand the underlying web services standards and framework.

Outstanding book --- Comprehensive and Example- rich book.
I have been functioning in this web services world for the past one plus years. I go through various articles, engaged in real time web services projects etc. This book provides the reader all the in-sight into web services. Web Services is a buzzing word around the software world as a next generation of distributing computing. This well organized book covers all the realistic topics starts with what are web services, need and different business models including B2B, B2C scenarios. It also states how web services are different and advantageous from present technologies and the core web services technologies (XML, SOAP, WSDL and UDDI) the building blocks of web services. It discuss in detail about the implementation of web services in both .NET and Java.
Absolutely, Web Services transfigure the software world, but it has yet to ripe out to use it in enterprise systems. Still web services are maturing. At present, web services are excellent for plain message transaction from one program/application to other. That is Web Services can be used in non-critical applications where security, reliability are not significant. One of the major concerns, we take notice of in Web Services is security. If there's one thing that has slowed the widespread acceptance and implementation of Web Services, it's their lack of security standards, reliability issues and Transaction Processing etc.
I take pleasure in reading the Web services Security chapter. It explores all the security issues such as Basic security issues, SSL, XML Signature, XML Encryption, XKMS, SAML, XACML and WS-Security in a comprehensive manner. Appendices contain VisualBasic.NET and Java Live-code implementation of web services based applications.

Microsoft and IBM have produced a road map outlining the additional Web Services security specifications along with WS-security. This book explained Microsoft's GXA, a series of specifications, which address the various problems faced by the web services in depth along with .NET MyServices, and Mappoint.NET. The two things, I enjoy very much in this book are the employing of abundant case studies and the vast Internet and Web Resources. All the case studies provide the reader a realistic knowledge. The chapters of this book walk around a wide range of recommended reading lists. All these resources help one for further reading.

Written for IT managers, software developers and business professionals alike, this guide explains the business and technology of Web services.

"This Outstanding book arrived at the exact period, which provides all the details about the Web Services in Comprehensive, realistic and practical manner."
