Muldoon's best
Lordy, it would be ANYBODY'S best. Paul Muldoon's work has always been great but *The Annals of Chile* is a breakthrough. "Cows" and "Twice" are pitch- and picture-perfect and the intricacies and expansiveness of "Yarrow" could keep me occupied and entertained for months, but more than anything else it is the unforgettable "Incantata" that makes this book a treasure. Who knew that poets like this still existed? (Only in Ireland, I suppose -- and by the way, if you like Muldoon make sure to check out conationals like Michael Longley and Ciaran Carson. A good time is guaranteed to be had by all.)

Anne Tyler : A Critical Companion

Great Resource About a Great Author
Anne Tyler is a perceptive writer with an original, slightly off-kilter style. This book includes a chapter of biographical material on Anne Tyler, as well as another chapter discussing the major influences on her--other Southern writers and women writers. There is an extensive discussion of several of her best novels, from the beginning of her career through 1998. Each novel gets a whole chapter devoted to it. Stylistic peculiarities, construction of the novels, character development and theme are covered, with unique insights into how each novel reflects themes in Anne Tyler's life. Tyler shunned publicity and gave very few interviews, but did consent to an interview with the author of this book in order to clarify some fine points. Well researched and well written, this is a treasure for anyone who appreciates Tyler's work.

the twenties
This is a wonderful book about a tough period in our history, the 20's. It shows many hardships that the people went through, even though it was a "golden" age. I am a history teacher that thought he knew everything about the 20's. This book offered me insights that I had never known about. It was a great book and I would recommend it to anyone.

This is an outstanding book on photographic technique.
John Schaefer is a fine photographer who works in black and white and color. In "Basic Techniques of Photography" John Schaefer has created a wonderful "how to" on the basic and intermediate aspects of photography. The book is filled with helpful information, and beautifully illustrated with the work of notable photographers, with many images due to Ansel Adams. Here are summarized and illustrated many of the ideas from the famous Ansel Adams series of books which include "The Negative" and "The Print". A strength of the book is a clear exposition on the value and use of the zone system. Other strengths include sidebars which provide detailed comments about individual images, and sequential images which show the result of some of the darkroom techniques, or exposure information discussed in the book. This is a fine book, one which any active photographer will benefit from.

GREAT CHOOSE
Schaefer has taken on a major task in reworking the material to reflect changes in equipment and materials while maintaining the thoroughness, attention to detail, and spirit of the Adams' series. I feel that he has succeeded nicely.

While a lot has been borrowed directly from the previous work there is also much new material and the format itself has been changed substantially. The book now opens with a thoroughly enjoyable, albeit brief, history of photography before getting down to business...Although targeted at a bit different readership than its predecessor, An Ansel Adams Guide: Basic Techniques of Photography, Book I is a good read and destined to become as much a classic as the original.

Hilarious tales of Merry Prankster Paul Foster.
Ex-Merry Prankster Paul Foster has written a crafty and penetrating tale of his life in the Sixties counter-culture alongside his friends and cohorts Ken Kesey, Jerry Garcia Wavy Gravy and others. Mr. Foster has also illustrated this fascinating book with his inimitable "speed freak" drawings, seen previously in the Ken Kesey book "Garage Sale". The stories related here are at once illuminating and cautionary, and those times viewed with good humor and a clear and penetrating eye for detail. Kudos for a job well done and a plea added for a second volume.

The Anthropology of Iceland
This book must be read by everyone interested in learning more about the nuances of Icelandic culture. The various authors do well in researching their subjects. Their love of Iceland shines through their scholarly research. This book is one of my favorite books on Iceland because it reminds me of what a great anthropological study Iceland is.

Anti-Sartre, with an essay on Camus
Published in Unknown Binding by Borgo Press ()
Author: Colin Wilson
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

Unusually Clever
The book is only 50 pages long. Its more a phamlet than a book. The effort here is a little lazy. Wilson himself says, in the book, that he had originally planned to write something larger, but had not bothered since another philosopher was in the process of so doing. Hearing that, I was dissappointed. I wanted him to elaborate his criticisms of Sartre to something of 400 pages.

As any event, the book should not have been called "Anti-Sartre." That title is, very simply, sensationalism. It was written in 81, a year after Sartre's death. A kind of low blow.

Wilson's own points on Sartre are clever. He dismisses Sartre's account of the emotions, consciousness, freedom, and the world at large. At the same time, he respects and admires Sartre.

Buy this book if for no other reason than the originality I promise it has. Not too many books denounce Sartre outright as in this case.

An inside look at a great figure.
Paul Polansky has done a first-rate job. "Antonin Dvorak, My Father" gives insights into Dvorak's life that can only come from somebody who was so close to the man himself. Polansky is a seasoned researcher, and the quality of his scholarship shines through the whole book.
