Surprisingly rich and readable for such a thing book
Java books nowadays tend to be mammoths. You nearly break your arm lifting them off the shelf. But Paul Wang's rather slender book still packs a wallop and delivers excellent content in tons of very readable examples. You'll learn about neat, arcane topics like using Java to write CGI server programs and all sorts of things about network sockets. There are very few errors and the typefonts are especially large and readable. The only detraction, which isn't Dr. Wang's fault, is that the cover is too thin and flexible. This wonderful book deserves a hardcover!

Jean Lee : the last woman hanged in Australia

Gruesome and Great
I came across this book in the crime section of my library and, havingnever heard of the case before - since the events occured long beforemy birth- I was soon captivated. What attracted me to the book was that it was not written as a dry historical piece. Rather what makes it fascinating is how the writers (Paul Wilson co-wrote with Don Treble and Robyn Lincoln) include imagined conversations, to try to fill in the dots, where only the criminals themselves would have known the truth. These conversations appealed to the playwright in me. Jean Lee was the last woman hanged in my country, but not the last person, since at least one other man has been hanged, to my knowledge since. Jean's accomplices' Robert Clayton and Norman Andrews were also hanged at the same time Jean was. The writers make the claim that the hangings occured out of expedience for the resident state government, when doubts still remained concerning the case. It was never clear what part Jean Lee played in the murder, and the police interrogation procedures of the accused three was later found to be highly questionable. The writers also believe that an example was made of Jean, because of her sex and working-class origins, as a warning to other women of conservative post-war Melbourne of the consequences of deviating from the socially approved path of feminity. This latter claim is one I have a bit of trouble with, because to my mind, the writers have made it clear Jean intended to swindle Pop Kent, the murder victim. The fact the he was killed as a result of being robbed does not diminish her responsibilty for her actions. The book is meticulously researched, and includes photographs of all the people involved. I particularly liked seeing the gallows where the hangings took place and the "punishment" hood which features on the cover, creating a medieval and creepy image.

Jean Paul Sartres No Exit and the Flies
Published in Paperback by Hungry Minds, Inc (December, 1989)
Authors: Jean Paul Sartres, Leslie A. Juhasz, and Jean-Paul Sartre
Amazon base price: $3.95

An incredible piece
Sartre's "No Exit" not only provides a version of Hell that is the complete polar opposite of Dante's vision but he succeeds in making it seem scarier...and funnier. The fact that these three strangers start attacking each other like small children causes the reader (and viewer if watching a produced version) to secretly chuckle. One always wonders though as to whether they would fall into the same trap that these three do were they in the same predicament.

A brief but interesting look at the world of Gaultier
As with the other books in the Universe of Fashion series, the Gaultier edition is mainly a photo look-book into the world of the designer. There is a short introduction about Gaultier, as well as a timeline of major events and collections in Gaultier's career. The photos used in the book are a good representation of Gaultier's clothing from his entire career, highlighting key pieces, and often showing them in interesting ways (a women's velvet cone bra dress is worn by male model Tanel in one photo for example). A great book for any Gaultier or fashion afficionado.

The Blending of Culture and Modern Mysticism
THE JERICHO HOUSE is a seven act play that explores the human spirit as the author attempts to ask the perplexing questions that pertain to every day life. Take for example the character SAINT SHAMROCK FINN and how the author uses Shamrock like that of a ancient mystic or modern day sage in the form of a mentor who aids Jericho along the endless journey seeking the answers that will one day define his life, or how Jericho at the "WELL OF THE SOUL" finally comes upon his true love from within another character simply named Jeshurun. The play is full of imagination for both a child or any adult. A world full of magical sea shells with hidden keys kept away and secretly hidden inside along with a Sea Torn Scroll that might just resemble that of a modern-day Time Travelers Map of the universe and beyond. The author uses his imagination in his attempt to reveal and answer the differences between good and evil. The play reads like a book that will one day speak for itself.

Approaching Jesus With Fresh Eyes
This is an inciteful collection of sermon-like writings that will give you a fresh view of the well known figure Jesus. We all come to Christ with a variety of prejudices. This book is remarkable at "dropping the scales from our eyes" regarding Jesus. Highly recommend for everyone from ministers to people interested in finding out what this Jesus thing is all about.

Jesus and Paul: Signs of Contradiction
Published in Paperback by Liturgical Press (July, 1991)
Author: Wilfrid J. Harrington

True Paul
Harrington is one of the most accessible writers of scripture who is also a true historical-critical biblical scholar. The Jesus of Mark's Gospel and the real Paul and his understanding of Jesus are revealed to the reader with clarity and verve. He also presents a cogent argument that Paul was not anti-woman at all, but was very much in line with the acceptance of women that Jesus held.

I have use this text for years in theology classes, with much success.

I wish it were still in print.

Jesus and the Logic of History (New Studies in Biblical Theology)
Published in Paperback by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Co. (January, 1998)
Authors: Paul Barnett and Apul Barnett

Taking on the Spongs
Paul Barnett is also known as Bishop Paul Barnett of the diocese of Sydney, Australia. Apart from his theological qualifications, he has a doctrate in Ancient History and lectures at Macquarie University and Moore Theological College. Barnett has addressed the views of John Spong (and others) in specific and general ways in this book (and others). His thesis is that the life, death and resurrection of Jesus is not only historically defensible - and that conversely other views (such that it is all a myth etc), are indefensible and do not come to grips with the phenomenon of early Christianity attested to both in Biblical sources and extra biblical sources. Bishop Barnett's careful scholarship takes on the selective and naive historical analysis of Spong, Theiring and the Jesus Seminar. Barnett shows that the historical Christian explanation for the events of the New Testament are water tight. You would use this book if you wanted to seriously investigate the claims of the Bible, devoid of modern gnosticism (Spong), reductionist emoiricism (Jesus Seminar) or pure speculation (Theiring). This is a book for the serious sercher of the facts of the matter.

Insights into Paul's Christology from Epistolary Structure
Sinclair has provided good insights into Paul's Christology as derived from structural analysis of Paul's undisputed epistles. By unveiling the pastoral intent of those epistles, the author also provides fodder for present day application with textual authority.
