This easy to use book is graphically attractive with a good layout, photography, and maps. The text is easy to read and informative. It gives you the information you need to visit these gardens and helps you choose which ones are best. A definite "buy" for anyone interested in visiting gardens in the Midwest.

A lot of people find Greek and Latin literature boring as hell. If they refer to their school books I cannot blame them. But lets keep in mind that Sappho wrote poetry 'as refreshing as a morning breeze' and that Euripides sometimes wrote horror as if he was an early incarnation of Stephen King.Homer is often humorous for instance when he describes Zeus who's afraid that his wife Hera will be mad at him if he should change the course of the Trojan war. In 'A garden of Greek verse' are poems and excerpts of poems from about sixteen authors, a lot of it no more than two or three lines. To name a few of less known authors: Anacreon, Alcman, Callimachus, Menander, Palladas. 'A Garden of Greek Verse' proofs to us that Greek literature is a very intresting place to travel with a large variety of landscapes. I should say: read this little book of 80 pages, enjoy the beautiful illustrations and forget all about your school books.

Ok, I admit I am only an amature, and a week-end one at that, but gardening is my passion. All winter long I drool over gardening books until the weather warms up enough to go out and dig in the dirt. Laying in bed at night, my mind is moving perennials and planting annuals. I have been known to call into work with mysterious aliments on bright sunny days where the cure unfailingly is digging up a new flower bed. Well, these are my qualifications for making a review of The Gardner's Handbook. I have found it to be extremely through, well thought out and easy to interpret. It is my very favorite gardening book. There are others that are certainly more detailed, but no one has covered as much ground in so small a volume as Mr. Buczacki. And the nice handy size of the book is also a plus! This is a good housewarming gift to folks who are first-time yard owners, as well. Happy gardening.

This book, with its hauntingly fantastical narrative, and the style of flashing backwards and forwards in time, telling stories from the past to expound upon the mystery of the city makes the reader feel as if Biegel is writing something which they had dreamed. It's an incredible book, and I have not been able to find a copy since I was a child!

It is the most comprehensive and detailed book on gas turbine performance one could find in public domain. One debatable feature of the book is to have all equations in FORTRAN/BASIC format together in the end of each chapter. This makes the equation lengthy and sometimes difficult to follow its physical meaning. Nevertheless, it is a very excellent reference book.

Quite simply, read this book. It turns the subject of "ethnoecology" (sounds dull, doesn't it?!) into a poetic duet of plants and the relationship native peoples developed with them. Nabhan, in this book, profiles several individual species (found in his beloved Sonoran desert) as intimately as a biographer would profile an admired personage. The illustrations are delicate and so accurate you could go out and identify each species at first sight. I became enchanted, and wistful, at Nabhan's accounts of ingenious interactions of Southwest Amerinds and useful plants that allowed both to survive and thrive in such a harsh region. Wistful, because many of these vital prehistoric resources, such as panic grass and sandfood, are unknown to modern peoples, and virtually extinct. And with them, human ability to survive such harsh landscapes without radically modifying them is going extinct as well.
From Nabhan's perspective (in all his books), native peoples of a region are not interlopers, but another component of a balanced local ecology; the ecological diversity & resource potentials lost when the First World imposes foreign ecologies on regions is a subtext of all Nabhan's writings.
Each chapter of "Gathering the Desert" stands by itself; but together they lead to a conclusion of incomparable adaptation to what Euro-Americans see as a cactus "wasteland". I assign readings from this book, and the entire book, to my college classes in Southwest Indians and ecological anthropology. However, it has much wider appeal, and to call it "highly readable" is an understatement. I respect Nabhan's careful academic research and his commitment to actually going into the field to experience the peoples and the natural environment directly. I admire even more his ability to make what is very commonly a dull reporting of "what people ate" into a literary symphony. All his books are excellent; this is the best of the best.

This book is a complete history of the Gatling gun and NO book published since has held a candle to it.

Paul Gauguin was at the heart of the Post-Impressionist movement with his lush, colorful artworks revolutionizing modern painting a the turn of the 19th Century. Largely self-taught in a diversity of media including oil painting, printmaking, and ceramics, Gauguin came to his career as a Parisian artist relatively late in life, and went on to paint subjects drawn from where he would live ranging from Brittany and Martinique, to Tahiti, and the Marquesas islands. In Gauguin, art expert Britt Salvesen drew from research developed by Douglas W. Druick and Peter Kort Zegers, enhanced with 79 superbly presented illustrations of which 52 are in color and 27 are duotone. Gauguin is a very highly recommended addition to personal, academic, and community library art history reading lists and reference collections in general, as well as being strongly commended to students of the life and work of Paul Gauguin in particular.

Finnell's entry in the Great American Long Poem Contest is unlike any other I can think of. The individual sections skitter and swoop over great realms of aesthetic, personal, and historical territory, and the tone ranges from hilarity to wistfulness. In the guise of a meditation on Gauguin's strange allegorical painting, Finnell offers an indescribable mixture of family history, dream vision, artistic rumination, and slanted autobiography--all turning on and returning to the questions posed by Gauguin's title: "Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?" These huge questions fairly beg for solemnity and bardic posturing, but Finnell addresses them with consummately sly and strange offhandedness. Overall, his imagination is so odd, his sensibility so charming, his diction so fresh and capacious that it's easy to get lost in this book-and even easier to enjoy it.
