Reason & violence: a decade of Sartre's philosophy, 1950-1960
Published in Unknown Binding by Tavistock Publications ()
Author: R. D. Laing
Amazon base price: $
Used price: $5.99
Average review score:

This book should be edited & republished
In 1964, antipsychiatrists Ronald Laing & David Cooper produced this distillation of 3 works by Sartre that were influential on them: two sections of Sartre's 1960 opus, "Critique of Dialectical Reason," and his 1952 biography, "Saint Genet." But "Reason and Violence" is an almost impossible read; it is badly edited (with British-style punctuation, which may confuse Americans) & lacks any real format: 3 reviews, 3 sections, but with the earliest, "Saint Genet," sandwiched between the 1957 & 1960 works. This needs to be re-edited & published for a new generation.

The Remnants of Divorce

Been there before...
Having survived divorce with 2 young daughters myself, it was interesting to hear the childrens thoughts on their parents and their divorce. Sometimes the way we adults remember things are not quite the same as what our children remember and it was nice to see that the writer included the letters from his daughters even when their memories cast some shadows on his own perspective.

You are not alone.
I thought that this book can help others go through depression. This book was written for those going through depression, and it is to let others know that they are not alone. They can get plenty of help. I believe that the only there is for those going through depression is to talk to someone about their problems.

Not very detailed
Often confusing, and leaving important details for later, this book got confusing enough that I had to eventually put it down. It does assume that you do have some programming experience in another language and thusly does not go into the basic programming theories which programmers already know.

Comment
In the preface, the author admits that the main body of this book is the fourth of its five chapters, entitled "Rice Transformation", an area in which the author is an undisputed expert. This topic is preceded with Chapter 1 which summarizes the worldwide importance and general botany of rice, and chapters 2 and 3 which present a historical overview of tissue culture in rice. The author rounds out this book on rice biotechnology with Chapter 5 which addresses the introduction of rice genes into other crops via genetic engineering. With this book, the author strove to present a comprehensive and up-to-date review of rice biotechnology. Some new and significant accomplishments are herein presented. The portion of the book dedicated to the author's specific expertise was laced with several interesting comments from the author's own experience, but was somewhat difficult to read due to intentional repetition as well as some unintentional errors. The sections on rice transformation, as the "meat" of this book, could be said to be "plentiful and tasty but a bit gristly". However, the "top slice of bread" on the "sandwich", Chapters 1, 2, and 3, was "stale" and had some holes. This book contains much important information, but I would suggest that readers supplement its reading with the following sources: (1) Khush, G.S., and G.H. Toenniessen, eds. 1991. Rice Biotechnology. CAB International, Wallingford. (2) Ayres, N.N. and W.D. Park. 1994. Genetic transformation of rice. Crit. Rev. in Plant Sci. 13:219-239.

Interesting
This is an interesting collection of assumptions that Mr. G has written. Some ideas are quite far-fetched. Nevertheless, it's a cool book to read if you like Bach.

Ridley Who???
Ridley Who?...Ridley Scott nonetheless!...this guy has to be one of my all time favorite directors. Alien, a masterpiece...Blade Runner yet another...Legend (Legend?) I am just discovering. Paul Sammon writes in a detached manner typical of this type of material, he doesn't come close to exploring what is behind Mr. Scotts imagination and his drive to make the perfect picture...that's a shame considering his being able to get one-on-one interviews. What is prevalent are the small details about these films that make them so endearing...the chapter on Legend stands out as a must read. It is apparent that there are alot more interesting facts about these movies on the internet than in print, a fact Mr. Sammon seems to have overlooked with just one web reference throughout the entire book. Not nearly as good and comprehensive as his other book "The Making of Blade Runner", but still an enjoyable read for the aficionado. Hopefully the "Making of Aliens" will be some what better, and worth the wait (seems like two ice-ages have passed since it was announced!). Some typos throughout, marks for originality 7 out of 10, cover colour scheme -1 out of 10.

Robustness with Low Order of Accuracy
This book deals with numerical methods for boundary-value problems in ordinary and partial differential equations (mainly linear ones) whose solutions have boundary layers due to a small positive perturbation parameter multiplying the highest derivatives. The proposed methods are robust in the sense that they effecively resolve boundary layers and preserve uniformity in the perturbation parameter both in terms of accuracy and time/memory requirements. A novice will probably find the book more useful and interesting than a specialist, as the book represents a good introduction to the field. A specialist mathematician may be disappointed by the lack of detailed proofs for most of the more complicated PDE problems. Some of those proofs exist in the not easily accessable works of one of the co-authors (Shishkin), but still remain unknown to wider public. On the other hand, detailed proofs are given for linear ODE problems everything is known about. An engineer will certainly appreciate that the book describes all possible difficulties that may be encountered when solving these complicated problems numerically. (S)he will find the robustness of the methods attractive but will be disappointed by their low accuracy (the order of accuracy is most often less than one). It is very likely that engineers will continue using the existing higher order methods, even though the requirements of those methods may be nonuniform in the perturbation parameter.

Your Run-of-the-Mill Romans
William Hendriksen writes from a self-consciously and unapologetically Reformed perspective. In and of itself that fact recommends his book(s). For those new to the Reformed faith Hendriksen is a decent place to go to reinforce one's Reformed affirmations. Building off of Calvin and Luther Hendriksen underscores the apostle's doctrine of justification by faith throughout. Though at times showing hints of breaking free of the dogmatic tradition, Hendriksen fails to move beyond where the tradition has taken him. And the epistle of Romans, if any, is a text which ought to do just that. Hendriksen shows little sensitivity to the redemptive-historical movement and eschatological character of Paul's thought, and for that reason, he fails to plumb the depths of the richness of the gospel of God expounded by Paul. At times Hendriksen's language moves into the devotional mode--not necessarily wrong, but certainly out-of-place in a scholarly commentary. All in all, Hendriksen's Romans is a good review of standard ordo-salutis approach with minor variations/improvements, but it is diluted by devotional mush and the lack of a thoroughgoing eschatological outlook. If you are looking for a more solid Reformed commentary on Romans, John Murray's is still the best available.
