Like taking flight in an open cockpit plane on the journey
This is a concise and clear image of the kind of reception and response given and taken on Paul's missionary journeys. A good first place to start and to prepare oneself before taking a pilgrimage today.

This is the best book I've ever seen about probability.
I've never seen better explanations of how probabilities should be calculated. And the book is fascinating -- especially what the authors describe about the results of surveys designed to reveal the most common mistakes people make when estimating probabilities.

Extraordinary exotically erotic!
Jungle Fever is a dazzling excursion through the international underworld of beauty, humor and eroticism. Grace Jones on the cover, naked inside a tiger's cage is breathtaking. Also featured are Kellie the Evangelist Stripper, Sabu, Gene Kelly, Zouzou et many more. French artist Goude is a painter, photographer, dancer, couturier and more, an artist who uses the best means to get a point across. This book is out of print but search for a copy, it is the most original book I have ever come across.

An insightful view of a vanished judgment system.
Living among the Tiv, Professor Bohannon provides us with a complete and well-documented view of their society. The culture, which is now lost, is explained as it existed before it was assimilated. The complex social interactions were a result of a rich oral history, collected by Bohannon directly from the elders of the tribe. Illustrated.

Justice in the Church: Gender and Participation (Michael J. McGivney Lectures of the John Paul II Institute for Studies on mArriage and Family, 1992)

Excellent study of the role of women and men in the Church!
Fr.Ashley has produced a well-documented and thoughtful book on the roles of men and women in the church, discussing what true justice is, what participation in the life and happenings of the Church really means, and defenses for the prohibition of women to the sacrament of Holy Orders. Clearly, he has taken this issue very seriously and has done considerbale research in the area. The bibliography alone is amazing. While the work presents the reader with familiar issues, he explores a few new dimensions and contributes what I feel to be a significant aspect of gender and participation in the Church, namely the subject of what it means to be an active, "participating" member of the Church as a man or woman and the necessity of maintaining fidelity and "justice" to God's plan for the Church. Very interesting and worthwhile!

Justice Stephen Field: Shaping Liberty from the Gold Rush to the Gilded Age
Published in Hardcover by Univ Pr of Kansas (April, 1997)
Author: Paul Kens

Used price: $36.77

Fascinating biography deserves a wide readership
Paul Kens has written a lively, entertaining, and scholarly intellectual biography of one of the most fascinating justices of the U.S. Supreme Court, Stephen J. Field. Kens traces Field's career from his days as a young attorney just landed in gold-rush-crazed San Francisco in 1849, to his appointment to the U.S. Supreme Court less than fourteen years later, and on to the end of the century. Along the way, Kens discusses the political and economic events that shaped the thinking of Field and those with whom he did intellectual battle. Throughout, the book deals with an issue central to law in the economic realm: Does the economic power with which society might legitimately be concerned stem from government alone, or do other, private sources of power warrant a governmental response? Field clearly answered this question in one way, whereas for much of their history Americans have answered it in another. It may be a question that, every generation or so, Americans must answer anew....

Kens provides a balanced view. It would be easy to characterize Field as an apologist for the wealthy establishment--and he was so characterized by contemporary critics. But that characterization was not correct. Field's logic led him to take politically unpopular stands, especially with respect to issues of race, immigration, and corporate power. His concern about the potential abuse of government caused him to defend a strong role for federal judicial oversight of state legislation--recognizing that state legislatures might be even more likely than Congress to adopt special-interest legislation.

A fascinating story with fabulous illustrations!
This book captures the true story of a young Alaska native girl growing up in a family devoted to the old Tlingit customs but still adapting (if often reluctantly) to the ways of the whites increasingly dominating their world. More a set of stories than a single narrative, it includes retellings of several folk tales, historical details of how the Tlingit lived, and a lot of beautiful drawings I spent many childhood afternoons trying to copy.

My grandmother gave me an earlier edition of this book when I was nine, and by the time I turned thirteen I'd read it so many times it literally fell apart. I still have it and enjoy rereading it.

Kant and the Experience of Freedom : Essays on Aesthetics and Morality

Found it helpful in writing my Philosophy thesis
I found this extremely helpful in writing my thesis on the moral worth of actions done out of mixed motives in Kant's moral theory. I remember this book providing keen insight into how freedom is possible in Kant's theory and how that links up to the possibility of actions having moral worth even when the will is somehow influenced by nonmoral concerns.
