Contacts-Langue et culture françaises
I was very excited to find this 7th edition, 2001 of Contacts. It is a perfect level for adults and/or college students. It includes nuances of modern life in France and has a great section on internet vocabulary. The dialogues are modern and relevant. The cassettes have beautiful French speakers. The workbook fits well with each chapter. I would suggest it for French I or for an adult teaching themselves at home. I shall use this book for a long time.

Like "Aftermath" or "I Learned About Flying From That"
This is Volume 8 in a multi-volume series, all with the same format. That format is to take NTSB accident reports and NASA ASRS (Aviation Safety Reporting System) forms and use them to illustrate proper (and often improper) technique. The result is similar to the "Aftermath" and "I Learned About Flying From That" columns in aviation magazines, and is quite effective. This volume covers situational awareness, and is replete with examples of busting airspace, traffic conflicts, runway incursions, running out of fuel, getting lost and flying into adverse weather. The book uses the text of the NTSB report (for serious accidents) and then analyzes what went wrong in more detail, discussing both what went wrong and what should have been done. Numerous ASRS reports are analyzed in the same way, and it is easy to see how some of them could have become NTSB reports without some "luck" on the part of the pilots involved. Some of the incidents mentioned are ones I've never even thought of before, like what happens when the airport name changes but the change hasn't made it into the Airport/Facility directory yet? Yes, this situation has caused near midairs, and is well described by the pilot filing the ASRS! The only issue I have with the book is that the organization of the material is a little haphazard. Otherwise, this book (and the series in general) is an excellent example of how to use NASA's ASRS to advance aviation safety. And the price of the books is quite reasonable as well. Highly recommended.

Gives even the real Bowles fan interesting new insights
Caponi's collection of interviews, spanning several decades up to the early 1990's is a must for all real fans of Paul Bowles work, and an intriguing introduction to his life, work and influences for those who know little about him. As with any such collection of interviews, there is bound to be much repetition - different interviewers ask often essentially the same questions, while Bowles gives (more or less) the same answers. However, even for someone like myself, who thinks they know quite a bit about the man and his work (and maintains one of the Paul Bowles pages on the Web -

Many of the interviews touch on many of the other literary figures Bowles has known - Tennessee Williams is a frequent topic of conversation, as are William Burroughs and the other beat writers, and their time spent in Tangiers. It becomes very evident from the few interviews that dwell on the subject that Bowles is not going to talk much about his late wife, Jane. His hatred for the biography 'An invisible spectator' comes through clearly in several places, but I found it intriguing that his preferred biographer (if he had to make a reluctant choice) would be Millicent Dillon, author of the biography of Jane Bowles.

Altogether a very worthwhile read for anyone with any interest in Paul Bowles.

Fitting epitaph to an exemplary life
Sidney Hook was an outstanding philosopher who tried to fashion a synthesis of Marxism and Dewey's pragmatism. But his most important work was as a defender of the values of a free society against totalitarian ideologies.

This posthumous collection of essays contains Hook's reflections on a range of public policy questions, from an essay on euthanasia (which, while I do not agree with his conclusion, is a most moving account of his closeness to death) to a characteristically robust defence of the western enlightenment tradition against the educational obscurantists who would misunderstand it as 'eurocentric' and 'imperialist'. What shines through the book - especially in a gem of an essay in which he patiently explains to the pseudo-historian Howard Zinn why an imperfect liberal democracy has immeasurably great merits that are worth defending - is Hook's belief in the power of human reason applied to human affairs, tempered by his insistence on the necessity of constitutional government to protect us from the arbitrary power of totalitarian ideologies. A fine testament to a great man.

Without a doubt, the definitive work on the subject
Yes, it's probably too expensive for most of us to buy. But if you consult only one treatise on copyright, this is the one it should be. This is the bible.

Original, provocative and readable
This is an exciting and brilliantly conceived work that ties together literary criticism and legal theory with great assurance. Indispensable for scholars of James Joyce in particular, but should be of interest to anybody thinking about the status of law and literature in the twentieth century.

Great review of general concepts
I used this book to study for the Here's to Your Health DANTE exam. It was an excellent study guide and hit on each and every subject on the test. The practice tests in the back of the book were very helpful. I would recommend this text to anyone studying for a proficiency exam.
