Constructivist but not overly so.
This book really agrees with the way I like to teach chemistry. It's quantitative but not overly so. The balance of rigor with playful inquiry is perfect for tenth or eleventh grade chemistry class.

I strongly feel that high school science should be exploratory in nature, carefully sustaining whatever spark of wonder a kid has retained into adolesence and then parlaying that into an aptitude and appetite for the science they will encounter when they get to the university level.

Chevrolet=racing...?
Paul Van Valkenburg was a research engineer at Chevrolet in the 60's and writes with an engineer's eye. Bunkie Knudsen, General Manager of Chev. and V.P. of G.M. writes the foreward. How do you think Chevy won all those titles after the "no racing" agreement in 1957? The '''sucker" CanAm car, the Penske/Donohue TransAm cars, the Smokey Yunick cheater Nascar cars, the mystery engines, Duntov and the Corvette, it's all here in a no BS style. Very authoratative with diagrams and graphs. A good read for the serious enthusiast.

Good furniture book
The plans are described and drawn well. The style tends to lean more towards country or crafts, but the designs are well done. You could easily change the wood from pine to cherry, maple, oak or mahogany and get a different look. The important thing is that the furniture in this book is designed well.

A Mission-driven Church for the 21st Century
In 1998, Paul McKaughan, executive director of the Evangelical Fellowship of Mission Agencies (EFMA) with former missionaries William and Dellanna O'Brien published the results of an extensive research project "Choosing a Future for U.S. Missions." They brought mission agency executives, denominational leaders, pastors and theologians to a workshop and a series of focus groups around the premise that missions as now known is at a crossroads and needs to change if it is to be faithful to the Great Commission.

In this study an appeal is made for mission agencies and churches to recognize how 21st Century missions is changing. Among other things, local congregations are increasingly dissatisfied with simply being passive partners in fund raising appeals to send missionaries to other world areas where, in some instances, Christianity is now growing faster than in their own neighborhoods.

McKaughan and the O'Briens question whether the "missionary-drivenness" that characterized 19th and 20th century missions "will produce real missions" for the future. They suggest, "Real mission drivenness will help us escape the prison of dollars and finances, but a missionary approach may never do so." Missionaries as "professional Christians" are no substitute for the witness of mission driven local congregations. "The role of the mission agency has changed from being the 'door' of missions to being the 'facilitator' of local churches."

The authors offer an agenda for organizational and spiritual renewal that they believe has the possibility of joining congregations everywhere in a mission-driven church for the 21th century. A must read for those concerned about future mission efforts and the local church's chaning role in global missions!

Painfully insightful book by an author with CFIDS
As a newly diagnosed person, this is one of the first books that I read. The explanation of CFIDS and general treatments available is well written. Author sites his specific symptoms and how it has affected his life, which at times is painful to read. My favorite chapters included the one on dealing with family and friends and the interview with the doctor from Massachusetts. This interview lends credibility to the disease and was concise. Happy reading!

Excellent supplementary book
This book is an ideal companion to other histories of the Civil War. Its title, however, is a bit misleading. It is a book about ships, not about navies. It gives the vital statistics and brief service records for all the Union and Confederate ships but contains little else. Its real value is that it "puts a face" to the ship names in most civil war histories.

comments
this book presents a theory of control systems clearly and lucidly and presents the matlab simulation of control systems in a way which is most needed for brush-up in the eleventh hour. the author has taken keen interest in presenting the subject right from the grassroot level and a gradual development of the concepts is presented in the easy-to-use tool like way. i firmly believe that this should be in the bag of all engineers working on simulation of control systems.
