Dr. Smith's close association with the six persons presented in the book has also led to support of their families and friends on their journey to death. His observations during the dying process will lend a means for our learning about our own death. All of the six people led productive lives; they acquired the tools to continue this progress into the next world. Dr. Smith states that ones attitude toward death is largely determined by the way one looks at life. The question is raised---'Is death the worst thing that can happen?" Black slaves knew death was not the worst thing that could happen and expressed this in their songs, which capture the spirit of the question.
Dr. Smith's book should be read by all ages, especially the youth. The book would help them understand that the purpose of their being on this earth is one of preparation (growth and development) for entrance into the spiritual world.

If you like science fiction (or even if you don't), or mysteries, or love stories, you'll like this. The author's unique writing style perfectly sets the mood for this memorable and haunting book. Two warnings are in order: 1)this is aimed at an adult audience, and 2) this is not your typical "light" read - this book demands your attention, but the effort will be well rewarded. In fact, it's worth reading a second time just to make sure you didn't miss anything.
It's a wild ride that will leave you wondering about the nature of reality, but not wondering at all about the talent of this promising new author. Highly recommended.

Assertive communication is the first line of defense. Offenders are motivated to control their victims. Its your job to prevent them from gaining this control. Strategies include: passive resistence, assertive strategies, manipulation and negotiation, and physical resistence.
After nine years of MA study three fundamental stand out: palm strikes, elbow strike, and eye gouges are devastating. Controlling the offender to the ground puts him in the most vulnerable position possible because he can be stomped to death or permanently maimed. Chokes and submission techniques are effective, but stomps are deadly. Danylewich demostrate a series of physical resistence techniques: basic stances, palm strikes, palm heel, finger claws to the face, eye gouges, groin grab, forearm groin strike, and frontal and back elbow strikes. Groin kicks can sometimes make the opponent madder, instead kick the knee cap. Longer distance weapons are explored, such as, front snap kick, side kick, and back kick. The author effectively illustrates and describes techniques against front and back grabs, chokes, and hugs.

This is Medieval Iceland in the 13th century, when this and all the other great sagas were written. The EYRBYGGJA is one of the best of the sagas -- provided that you can handle all the genealogies. (Virtually all the people in the saga were real people; and many of today's Icelanders can trace their families back almost 1,000 years.)
If there is any hero in the EYRBYGGJA, it is Snorri the Priest. He manages to maintain his power despite several threats that unfold during the several generations of this story. At times, as in the case of the feud with Arnkel, Snorri seems to be in the wrong. But he is consistently faithful to his friends and therefore has no problem raising the forces to back up his position. His life bridges the conversion to Christianity in the year 1000: Snorri proves his adaptability by going from a priest of Thor to an advocate of the new religion. In all the Icelandic sagas I've read, most of the characters do not seem to be wholeheartedly committed to either the old or the new religion; but all are superstitious about the restless dead, which brings me to one of the most fascinating aspects of this saga: the ghost episodes that seem to proliferate. I particularly like Thorolf Twist-Foot, a disagreeable old man who keeps coming back from the dead and causing trouble -- which Snorri deals with in most inimitable fashion by holding an ancient legal proceeding called a "door court" to expel them.
My only criticism: This book needed a good set of maps for following the action. The lone map provided is inadequate.
I re-read the introduction after finishing the book and was satisfied that I had the full story (and history).
I agree with Sir Walter Scott's assessment that "Of all the various records of Icelandic history and literature, there is none more interesting than Eyrbyggja Saga."
