2 extremely powerful parables of the human spirit
These two great stories are written in that harsh realistic style so charateristic of Solzhenitsyn's works. Both stories are important on two fronts: They are both allow for primary-source insight into what many Westerners have a skewed perception of (the poverty and oppression in Stalanist Russia), and secondly, both stories present severe criticsm of human nature in such grand metaphoric form as to allow them to penetrate the reader's own soul. The phrase "thought provoking," does these stories no justice, the parables are better described as painfully applicable.

Excellent!
This book covers the main weapons used by the Waffen SS during World war 2. It`s very well illustrated with photos and drawings of the weapons. It`s not a book that studies the subject in depth so you don't have to be an expert to appreciate it. It will be a fine complement to my other books about the Waffen SS and their equipment.

Beyond Basics
This is a well rounded book to help anyone learn the basics of html to the more advanced tools available. This is the second book I have purchased by Paul H. Zimmerman and both have been very useful. Each section contains a discussion of the topic/process, good design tips and a step by step guide to walk you through the mechanics of the process. This books provides a good foundation so that you have the confidence to explore other parts of FrontPage 2000. In addition, it serves as a good reference guide when working on html pages (including frames).

Lots of great literature all in one place
This is a good collection of literature from the Enlightenment to the early 20th century. Some of the choices were wuite interesting such as Wuthering Heights as the example of the Victorian novel, (I, myself, would have chosen Jane Eyre), but all in all this is a well put-together collection. The biographical information before each author is also interesting and puts the works into context. This is amust-have for English majors and literature fanatics alike.

Wetlands: The Web of Life
Published in Hardcover by Sierra Club Books (October, 1996)
Authors: Paul Rezendes, Paulette Roy, and Bill McKibben
Amazon base price: $40.00
Used price: $191.96
Average review score:

A winning combination!
Finally a great book on an oft-ignored subject...! The other books I found on wetland are usually too academic or too focused on photos. Rezendes/Roy's book combines fantastic photographs (about 30% of them cover one-and-a-half page) with in-depth (but not dry) essays that capture my imagination and educate me on wetland environments. Most of us would most probably visit one or two famous wetlands in our lives such as the Everglades, and that's about it unless you are fortunate enough to live near one. This book gives you the opportunity to experience in technicolor the marshes of Massachusetts and Georgia; prairie potholes of North Dakota and Canada; shorelines of New England and Maine; and many more. It is not a book about dead tree-stumps and saw grass as you would have thought; it covers the human impact, the environmental care that should be given, and the importance of preserving these wetlands. Get this book, ogle at the photos and discover/understand (and perhaps help to care for) these fragile ecosystems.... You will be amazed at the biodiversity of the wetlands and you will understand why "The Web of Life" is given as the subtitle.

What Is Pastoral?
Published in Paperback by University of Chicago Press (May, 1997)
Author: Paul Alpers
Amazon base price: $16.00
Used price: $15.88
Average review score:

What, indeed....?
Paul Alpers approaches one of the most complex questions in literary criticism. The text is a theoretical consideration of the epistemology of pastoral text as mode and genre. The study is highly rooted in traditional conceptions of pastoral, and his historical perspective of genre evolution is a bit myopic at times. Nevertheless Alpers is an excellent scholar of pastoral and his study is one of the best in the criticism. The student will learn a lot of what pastoral really IS from Alpers, drawing primarily from representative anecdotes of antique pastoral.

Unfortunately he never really comes close to actually answering his question ("What is pastoral?") in a definitive or convincing way. Furthermore his prose, while urbane, is at times perplexing; which is to say, sometimes it's hard to tell what he's really talking about. I had to read this book twice and it's a long one; furthermore I really think I should read it a third time. For the student who wants a quick and easier study, I would recommend Gifford's "Pastoral." This text is definately interesting for academic audiences in literary criticism, but probably not the general reading public.
