Chapters focus in depth upon Debussy's individual songs
Images: The Piano Music Of Claude Debussy Paul Roberts (professor of piano, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London) is a meaningful, superbly presented, in-depth analysis of the French piano music of artist and visionary Claude Debussy. Chapters focus in depth upon Debussy's individual songs and go into minute, deconstructive and comparative analysis, observing common threads in Debussy's work and that of other masters such as Chopin. A scholarly book deftly written at the college-graduate level, Images is highly recommended as the perfect companion book for a true connoisseur of Debussy's music. Two music CD's of Debussy's work, performed by Images author Paul Roberts, are intended as companions to Images but are sold separately.

A great book for pianists and listeners.
I would be able to write a more erudite review of this book if I had my copy beside me, citing examples of wonderful writing, interesting anecdotes and illuminating images. Unfortunately, I loaned it to my piano teacher, and she won't give it back! She has fallen in love with it. I think I may have to give her a copy as a gift if I ever want to see my copy again. Paul Roberts was here in Portland last June for the first Piano Festival Northwest. He gave a lecture, a master class and a piano recital. His abilities in all three areas are distilled into this book. He has studied Debussy and the cultural "stew" of Paris during Debussy's life. He has studied Debussy's piano works and performs them sensitively. And finally he can explain all of this in a most entertaining manner, in person and in his writing. The book is not easy to read in a summertime-beachy way, but it is certainly not academic or pedantic. It is lively but thorough, engaging and thought provoking. It also contains many examples and musical excerpts which can be studied with a view toward performance of the pieces. As an amatuer pianist, I can appreciate these sections without being able to perform the works, and my teacher takes the examples as points of departure or new interpretive ideas for works which she has performed in the past, but can now see in new ways. Of course, if you've never heard of Debussy, I suppose you might have no use for this book. Otherwise, buy it. (I have no connection, family or business, with Paul Roberts.)

Excellent book, well worth reading
This book is interesting and well-written. It answers one of the most difficult questions facing managers today - How does one manage creativity? I first saw this book at the British Council Library in Bangalore, India, and have been trying to buy it ever since. Thank you, Amazon Books, for helping me locate it.

Provides great structure for creativity and problem solving.
The authors provide a wonderful context in which to understand both creating and problem solving in business. The book provides an excellent review of some of the best cutting edge creativity technologies, as well as many useful new tools that I have used sucessfully in my own creativity practice. I highly recommend the book to newcomers to the growing field of business innovation and creativity, as well as seasoned veterans. I'm imagining the authors' British roots are partially responsible for their fresh slant that adds to the body of knowledge provided by American authors. A great read, lots of fun, and packed with helpful tips and resources

The best single-volume chest radiology book.
If you've seen the second edition, this edition is a big improvement, with much better coverage of CT and MR. It's an excellent book both for radiology residents and practicing radiologists, who are looking for a single-volume text which is both readable, and sufficiently comprehensive to use as a reference. Top-notch.

Brilliant Book on Chest Imaging
Most comprehensive and manageable text on chest imaging. Covers all aspects from plain film to newer modalities. A Must for any busy department.

A good overview of philosophical approaches to the topic
This text works well in college classes and for general readers interested in the range of views (pro and con) on the issue of life after death.

http://www.infidels.org/infidels/products/books/
"_Immortality_ is a compilation of numerous authors, ancient and modern, who address the question of whether or not there is a life after death. Edwards provides an excellent seventy page introduction which guides the reader through other relevant philosophical issues, such as the nature of the vehicles' for survival of bodily death, the mind-body problem, the traditional Christian concept of bodily resurrection, the evidence and arguments for and against reincarnation, and the relationship between belief in God and belief in survival of bodily death--where Edwards stresses an often overlooked fact that one can believe in either without believing in both (Voltaire, for example, was a deist who believed that the universe had a Creator because he accepted the argument from design, but rejected belief in life after death; and many modern-day parapsychologists who believe they have evidence for survival are also atheists). Edwards also emphasizes that mind-brain dependence does not entail the truth of a strict materialism that contends that mental states are identical to brain states; thus arguments against reductionist materialism are irrelevant to the factuality of the dependence of consciousness on the brain. _Immortality_ includes essays on life after death from such prominent historical thinkers as Plato, Lucretius, Tertullian, Descartes, Hume, Voltaire, and Kant to contemporary philosophers, parapsychologists, and theologians. _Immortality_ is clearly written and well-structured, allowing both a historical survey of differing opinions on the issue and an evaluation of the state of the evidence and arguments today from authors with opposing viewpoints."

In Search of Paradise: The Nordhoff-Hall Story

An excellent portrayal of south seas life in the 1920's
This is a must for anyone who enjoyed Mutiny on the Bounty, or ever wished to just escape the ins and outs of every day life. This book portrays the real life events of the two adventerous authors. It begins with their experiences as WWI pilots all the way through to their wish to escape the modern world and settle in the south seas. A great book for the adventure minded! TF

worthy companion of "bounty trilogy."
I came upon this biography in a roundabout manner. After rereading the marvelous "Bounty Trilogy" yet again, I hungered to know more of its authors, and was led to this literary banquet by Paul L. Briand, Jr. Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall, who co-wrote "Bounty", were weary veterans of World War One, discouraged and disillusioned by the inhumanity of that bloody theater, yet they themselves led lives as adventurous and exotic as those of the lost souls they came to write about.

Mr. Briand carries us along as they seek escape and solace in the South Pacific. We grow faint from the heady perfumes, we sway in the tropical breeze, and we come to know and respect the native people who befriended them. Here in paradise they hid and healed and wrote their masterpiece. Here we experience the South Pacific that now exists only in song, fable, and memory.

Mutual Publishing Company, of Hawaii, has republished many forgotten but worthwhile tales of the South Pacific. "In Search of Paradise" is one of the best.

Step into "In Search of Paradise" and you will leave a bit of yourself in that mythical land, and you will return again and again.

"In Search of Paradise" is a companion book to "Bounty Trilogy", a must-read, and must-own for anyone who would escape, if for just a moment, into the misty romance of the South Pacific

Extraordinary
Paul Deslauriers has written an extraordinary book that speaks clearly to the energetic exchanges that occur in relationships of all types. Through his sharing he provides clues for readers regarding the exchanges that are being experienced in daily interactions, thus pointing the way toward a cleaner, healthier, less stressful approach. If you are a trainer in an organization or just an individual who wishes to further your understanding of your interactions with others - this is an excellent read.

Extraordinary
A mutual friend told me about this book when she was previewing it and it was her enthusiasm and recommendation that led me to purchase the book. I read the first half of the book in the first day (I couldn't put it down!) and then ordered additional copies to share with friends. For anyone who sees the world energetically - who takes in information about their surroundings in this manner - who translates experience by reading and feeling the energy of others and their surroundings - this book is an incredible confirmation. Paul Deslauriers shares - openly - his from his personal experience and talks in plain terms about the energetics of those experiences and how that information plays out in his life. Additionally, there is wonderful organizational information - and I, as a person who has done Organizational Training and Development, felt such a sense of upliftment to read experiences and beliefs which mirror my own in this realm. For me this book underlines that which I have believed to be true about the world, organizations, relationships. Whether you are in an organizational or personal relationship that finds you questioning its essence or parts, or you are ready for a dynamic read, you will love this book. It is a gift to read words that resonate so deeply. B.J.R.

Where we came from, where we're headed in the e-world
While this book is quite dated (1985 publication date, which makes it virtually 20 years old from time of its writing) it is a valuable book about business and the role of information in the lives of office workers.

Author Strassman equates "white collar work" with "information work." We used to say "I'm in advertising" or "I'm in manufacturing" but what the majority of people like you and I do daily, hourly is gather, process and distribute information.

Strassman also touches on measuring productivity in these terms. A great quote on optimizing organizational effectiveness:
" Effective work is enlarge in scope, variable in procedure...and subject to instant feedback."

Such wisdom can provide the business manager with insight on how to better organize his or her team in terms of information flow and action. This is a really fundamental book that is worth reading again and again, despite the fact it is a two decades old. Highly recommended.

One of Five "Must Read" Books on Information Age
Paul, former Chief Information Officer for Xerox and later Director of Defense Information, used this book to address the basic issues of employee productivity in relation to information technology. This is one of a very few books, including those by Carkhuff, Cleveland, Kelly, and Toffler, that I regard as fundamental-required reading for anyone with any authority over anything.

Information Productivity: Assessing Information Management Costs of U. S. Corporations

Report Card for CIOs: D- InfoTech is NOT Profit-Maker
Paul documents the fact that "a very large share of U.S. industrial firms are not productive in terms that apply to the information age." He evaluates and ranks 1,586 firms, and the results are both surprising and valuable.

Clearly well researched, relevant & absorbingly interesting.
Very readable, holds attention from front to back. Excellent content, thought provoking, clearly well researched and obviously considerable original intellectual input.

This is, however, a statisticians dream. This is like a highly refined diagnostic tool for a disease for which the cure appears elusive. The text even implies that no obvious cures are on the horizon. The author humbly provides the diagnostic tools but leaves the reader to take the steps in finding the appropriate medicine. But this is not a fundamental flaw.

We know that the quantitative view of information productivity is vital for clarity and repeatability of subsequent activities. However, the best part of the quantitative approach through information productivity is its ability to compare performance from company to company, and from time to time. It puts a very effective 'stake in the ground'. Its inability to assist in identifying all the causes will require some creative activity.

Even in its slightly imperfect form (from my perspective) it impresses. I believe this is a seminal work. It contains much research that will provide valuable input into corporate improvement.

Much ground has been covered that will not need re-covering; many conclusions have be drawn that will not need re-drawing; many blind-alley's have been identified that won't waste people's time in future. I am sure many decisions will be made from this that won't need tiresome re-making.
