Introductory Probability and Statistical Applications
Published in Hardcover by Addison Wesley Publishing Company (January, 1970)
Authors: Paul L. Meyers and Paul L. Meyer
Amazon base price: $38.73
Average review score:

Excellent tutorial-like introduction to modern probability
This book is the best textbook for introduction to probability. Forget Chung, forget Ross, forget Feller. All these books assume that you know probability and that you are either revising or looking for advanced concepts. But the book in question assumes only some knowledge in calculus. The chapters are easy-paced and there are nemerous exercises to help you understand the concepts. Another factor that adds to the utility of the book, is the thoughtful addition of answers to most of the exercises. This makes the book suitable for self-study. I would heartily recommend the book to any person new to probability.

Invented Reality: How Do We Know What We Believe We Know?
Published in Hardcover by W W Norton & Company (March, 1984)
Authors: Paul Watzlawick and Paul Watzlawick
Amazon base price: $23.95

A Hidden Masterpiece
Finding honest philosophical work is as probable as finding an unsigned Picasso at a garage sale. It happens, but so seldom that its occurance is cause for a grand celebration. The difficulty lies not only in the relative scarcity of the unclaimed art, but in our powers of perception as well. I don't have a good enough eye to distinguish a cubist-period Picasso from a Braque or Duchamp, or even, perhaps, a Picasso from a cheap knockoff, but I do know honest philosophy when I read it, and Watzlawick's book is a gallery of rare masterpieces. With the same keen observation that he demonstrates in "How Real Is Real," he collates and develops essays by pioneers in biology, psychology and philosophy, whose work all points to a challenging hypothesis: that our biological makeup, in tandem with our linguistic codes, give rise to the very world we come to know. Far from representing a world with fixed categories of things, we construct our world through our unique perception (and expression) of it. We humans, he argues, travel a path between the intuited world of idealism and the logical one of traditional realism. He is not alone in this assertion, and in his own essays uncovers the philosophical history of this trail (now known as constructivism) as well as sketching out promising avenues yet to be taken. The author has spent over thirty years as a clinical psychotherapist, well over a dozen at the famous Mental Research Institute at Palo Alto, and has worked or collaborated with some of the (other) legends in the field, including Gregory Bateson, R.D. Lang and Alan Watts. And like them, Watzlawick has come to appreciate the intricasies of human and animal communication. If you are looking for a book that helps fill in the philosophical underpinnings of the double-bind, game theory, and disinformation, acquire this book. If you simply want to read a collection of essays by various legendary iconoclasts, including the now world-famous Francisco Varela, get a hold of this rare collection. In intellectual currency, it has the value of a garage full of Picassos.

Invertebrate Zoology

A great book for the home or campus
As a biology major in college, this was one of my favorite books, and is probably the main reason for my overall enjoyment of the course. The author has organized the book in a logical, easy to follow manner that takes the reader from the very simple, single-celled invertebrates all the way through to the more complex species, including giant squid, octopi, and jellyfish. While most books of this type are specific to either the laboratory or the lecture room, this book is useful for both, and can help to tie the two together in a meaningful way. It is profusely illustrated, with both excellent diagrams and photographs of the creatures it explores. I'd very much like to find an original copy of this book, just for the pleasure of having it.

Investigating Communication: An Introduction to Research Methods

Investigating Communication Offers Excellent Overview
I highly recommend this book to those seeking an introduction to communication research methods. This book is creative and well organized. Concepts are explicated with "real studies" and the concepts' definitions are clearly conveyed. The numerous examples highlight the breadth and depth of research in the field of communication studies while helping the reader to answer the "so what" questions about research methods. I enjoy using this book with my undergraduate research methods classes and my students speak favorably about their experience using it.

Great intro book
This book is great for anyone that finds the science of epidemiology or diseases interesting, or for someone that is thinking of going into a related field. Easy to understand, but not too simple. It provides thorough information and many specific examples in all fields of epidemiology, including infectious disease, cardiovascular, cancer, and work-related diseases. All in all, a great read and very informative.

Very honest and personal... GREAT!!!
I haven't finished the book yet, but even half way through it, it really is a great book. The author shares his life very honestly and openly and shares great insight from his years of leading. I think there is a lot of struggle in being an Asian American leader and this book helps to verbalize and bring to light those struggles. Thanks Paul!

IP Solutions for Windows 2000
Published in Paperback by Prentice Hall PTR (28 February, 2001)
Authors: Paul T. Ammann and Paul Ammann
Amazon base price: $49.99
Average review score:

For implementation, support, administration... the best
Compared to the author's Cisco book, this is by far his best book. Beautifully written, easy to understand and nicely illustrated, you will learn an a lot about Microsoft's implementation of the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) in the Windows 2000 environment.

Seven hundred pages provide an overview the TCP/IP architecture and Internet standards, then guides you through TCP/IP installation and configuration. Additional lessons cover IP addressing and routing, subnetting, and the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). Explains the Windows Internet Name Service (WINS), domain functions, name resolution and implementation of the Domain Name System (DNS). Discusses connectivity issues in heterogeneous environments. Reviews guidelines and introduces IP network troubleshooting.

The author really did his homework in comparing normal TCP/IP functionality versus what Microsoft's think TCP/IP should function as. Throughout the book, you will find "Author's Note" pointing out these differences.
