Liturgy: the study of Christian worship, doctrine and life
Study Liturgy?
The late Dean of St. Paul's, was dining at a high table in Oxford and was asked by his neighbor, a distinguished liturgist, whether he was interested in liturgy.'No,' said the Dean, Neither do I collect postage stamps'; quoted from : Couratin ,Introduction to Liturgy, the Pelican Guide to Modern Theology, Vol. 2. But, even though he criticized Dr. Inge's estimate of liturgical study - a trivial branch of archaeology - his study was part of volume 2 : Historical Theology.

What is liturgy?
Liturgy is neither 'historical' nor a collection of prescribed forms for public worship as per webster's student dictionary. Liturgy is the work of the laity and ministry for their life in the spirit, a real participation in the mystical body of Christ. This is what the outstanding editors of this masterly book reflect in this revision: the last two decades of intense liturgical productivity, ecumenical openness among not only scholars but also ecclesiastical corpus.

Lex Orandi, Lex Credendi
When you browse through this book you will find out about Will Durant's "Mansions" of liturgy, after you read some chapters you will realize the "pleasures of Liturgy". Ecumenical character of this monumental work is maintained by a panel of 25 contributors who seem to believe in what they write, practicing scholars.

The Editors and contributers:
G. Wainwright (Doxology) was my guarantee to the first edition , P. Bradshaw (Daily prayer in the early Church) enhanced my decision to buy an additional revised edition.
Just read the last chapter "Pastoral orientation" to find out how D.Tripp ingeniously sammerizes the real impact of liturgy on the people of the Lord. You may as well start with E.Yarnold's:
"The liturgy of the Faithful",I challenge you to stop reading!
I would love to find K. Ware and G. Bebawi , both of Oxford U. within the future contributers of the next edition, since liturgy is only whole with eastern orthodox authenticity.

At last, the Book: The Study of Liturgy:
I learned from this book more than what I learned in fourty years about the liturgy of the One Holy Universal Apostolic Church. Brought up in the ancient Church of Alexandria as didaskalos (teaching deacon, a tradition of the Alexandrine Megalopolis that started with Origen), I hope you appreciate what liturgy and its study can do for your enlightment, spiritual revival may also be a fruit, but for sure ecumenical fellowship in the Corpus Christi, the ever living.
Look at the table of contents and make your decision, because when you read this book, it will invite you to a new life, an ancient tradition of the real Church that will never be old.
If you have only one book on liturgy it should be this work, but it will be the first love, others will follow , some of those mentioned in the preface.

A fine Compilation of Essays on The Liturgy
The Liturgy has endured for around 2000 years as the primary means of worship for most Christians. We even have an early Eucharist Liturgy in the Didache, the 2nd century early Church manual. Due to the importance of the liturgy, every scholar and church leader needs to engage its development. This book will help in this task (at least for the scholar or priest/pastor. It's a bit academic to keep the interest of the average person in the pew).

This collection is grouped into three main sections: Theology and Rite, Development of the Liturgy, and Pastoral Orientation. Within the Development of Liturgy section there are seven sub-sections: General Intro, Initiation, Eucharist, Ordination, the Divine Office, the Calendar, and the Setting of the Liturgy. There are 65 essays total including, 'A Theology of Worship,' '(Initiation in the) the Modern Period,' 'The Anglican Eucharist,' 'The History of the Christian Year,' and the ever-elusive 'Methodism (and the Eucharist).' The essays cover a wide range of topics, interpretations, and time periods. Both Catholic and Protestant thought are represented nicely, in order to provide a truly useful survey. Also included are numerous glossy black-and-white photos of churches, liturgical manuscripts, and old church manuals.

I highly recommend this book for the liturgical scholar, the early or later Church historian, priests, pastors, and the interested layperson. The scholars are all top-notch, and the book is illuminating and will answer most questions about the Liturgy. The only drawback is that this book is priced rather high, since it is considered a textbook.

The Reasons Why We Do What We Do
The Study of Liturgy provides an easily readible and comprehensive history of the development of Liturgy. This study shows how such things as seasonal colors, vestments,Church calenders, and specific prayers came to be part of liturgical worship. What makes this book so useful is it's quality writing. Here, both students of Liturgy and interested laypersons can find facenating answers to their questions concerning liturgical function and ritual. How does the wearing of vestments impact worship? Why do the participants do what they do and when? What is Lent? What's up with all the bowing and hand gestures? Liturgical worship can be an awesome and majestic expierence. This wonderful book will demystify this type of worship for liturgical church goers and those of more reformed traditions alike. The authors have produced a quality work that can be read by non-technical persons and thoroughly enjoyed.

Divine Power Made Perfect in Weakness!
As someone working on a theology of the cross where the "power of God is perfected in weakness," I look for others writing on the same topic. This small, extremely readable book put so much together in such a small package that it is hard to rate the book highly enough. There really is nothing absolutely new here, but McGill has prayed through things to the center, and as a result, his writing reflects a really new coherence, brilliance, and perspective. You've heard it all before, but then again, it is all new --- and it is all incredibly compelling! One thing which is particularly helpful is his comparison of the Gods of Arius and Athansius. Two entirely different paradigms of God's power are at work here. It is a wonderful way to approach the debates involved. Also, McGill's understanding of the demonic will resonate with modern readers. Above all, however, McGill provides a theology which makes real sense of suffering, and introduces the God of Paul and John, et al, in a way which contrasts sharply with the absolutely powerful God so many espouse by mere reflex. A really great (and fast!) read.

Simple, clear and effective
This is a book that can completely change the way you think about life. McGill takes you slowly through an argument that makes the most difficult problem of our time seem simple. There is nothing wild or speculative here and nothing that hasn't been around for the last two millennia. It's the way McGill puts it that make the difference. I would put this book on my top five list for the last decade.

Revelatory
There are many books that recieve five stars; there are few books that are truly important. This book, a mere 130 pp. ranks right up there with The Brothers Karamatzov as a book that changed my life. As the title of the book suggests the topic is suffering --pain, sickness and violence. McGill ties in such disparate elements as modern jounalism, the parable of the good Samaritan, and a fourth century theological conflict to answer the question "What kind of God is there?" The answer is surprising.

The Surfing Corpse
For every person who likes a little twist and a mystery, The Surfing Corpse is a book that you should read. The Surfing Corpse is a book about two best friends named Mackenzie and P.C. (Peter Christopher).Their junior class trip turns into a disaster when classmate Timmy Warner plunges down a 300-foot waterfall. Soon after his funeral, Mrs. Warner's strange behaviors send P.C. and Mackenzie to Los Angeles, where they follow a twisting trail of clues involving a mysterious surfer, a murderous ghost, and some good actors. My opinion of this book is that this is a great book that will keep turning the pages until the book is finished! I could not put this book down for a second. And when Timmy Warner plunged down the waterfall, I thought for sure that he'd survive and that he jumped himself. There were a lot of times where I thought I figured out the mystery and I didn't. If you read this book it will probably happen to you to. To figure out this mystery you must read this book. If you are going to try and figure out the mystery your self, good luck trying! Therefore, this is a great book. And I think that you should read it. So. Read it!

A Guaranteed Read-Aloud Hit
I am reading this title aloud to my 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students. They moan and beg for just a little more everytime I tell them that we are out of time and they will have to come back next week to find out what happens in the next chapter. They love the snappy dialogue and are now borrowing every Paul Zindel book we own or can borrow from other libraries.

The thrilling second book in the series.
P.C. and Mackenzie, along with the rest of their class, saw Timmy Warner fall to his death over a three hundred foot waterfall. But unlike the others, they don't accept it as a simple accident. When they suspect his angry mother may be involved, they follow her all the way across the country to L.A., where they meet Timmy's sister and discover that his mother is trying to use the supernatural to contact her dead son. Then one day at the beach, they see a shocking site. The dyed hair doesn't fool P.C. and Mackenzie. The surfer they saw is Timmy. At first they think the death was staged in order to collect insurance money. But the real reason will truly shock them. Fans of the first book about P.C. and Mackenzie won't want to miss this one.

great
I bought this book based on comments from other buyers and the book is great. In fact my teacher also purchased this book and it's so much better than our school text book. I like how in depth this book goes and the variety of surgical procedures it has.

Excellent Book
This is an excellent book if you are a surgical technology student. I bought this book in addition to my required book for school becuase it was so much better than the required book. It is very descriptive and has lots of helpful pictures. The AST has done a wondeful job with this text book.

A book of information for the Surgical Technologist student
This book is full of information that is helpful. I am in my second term of taking a Surgical Technology course. We just start the real meat of the course... from patient position, drapes, and starting in a couple of weeks gi surgery. This book has it all and the instruments used in the major and minor tray. We have now the Alexander's which is good for the breakdown of different surgerical procedures but when it comes to the Surgical Tech's role there is not much. I'm glad that the AST has finally written a book. It will come handy now and throughout my career as a Surgical Tech. Kudos to AST...well done!

Tales from Annapolis

A great book!
I am a fan of the U.S. Navy and especially the Academy. For anyone who wants a glimpse of what life is like there for the Midshipmen, this book is for you. The stories are funny, some sad. You really get a idea of the dedication it takes to make it through a service academy. In one sense, you are a college student - but really you are on active duty already! My hats off to all Annapolis Alumni!

Midshipman Follies
_Tales from Annapolis: A Ring-Knockers' Bedside Companion_ (Omega Resources) by Rich Zino ('67) and Paul Laric ('49) is an amiable collection written by former midshipmen about the antics (and some of the antics are more serious than others) of student life at the Naval Academy. The contents will be best enjoyed by former midshipmen, but those who know little about Academy life will get to learn something of what the middies put up with. This is especially true of descriptions of fourth class (freshman) or "Plebe" year, which seem to be disproportionately represented here. My own memory (I am '72) of that year is really rather miserable and not much fun at all. The accounts here are generally upbeat, brightened, I suppose, by many years of chipping away by selective memories. There is a useful glossary which includes some of the tortures upperclassmen used to put us through, like "Shoving out: Positioning one's self in a sitting position without the aid of a chair; also referred to as sitting on infinity." (...)

The most surprising thing about this volume is how similar the tales from fifty years back are to my own memories or to the more recent classes. Mids were always, it seems, crawling down the steam pipe alleys underneath Tecumseh, zipping back just under the wire at curfew, and thinking up get rich quick schemes. The great difference in stories, those with no precedent, are those that involve female midshipmen or officers. Just a hint of sexual scandal is included in these pages.

However, an episode like rolling a bowling ball into the Rotunda through the ranks of the Watch Squad while it was in formation is a unique and classic prank for which a member of the class of '63 takes credit (for a "mystery bowler," of course). This tale was a legend even when I was there, and long may it and the other jolly stories in this book be retold and grow in the telling.

A treasure box of Memories...
This book is something a little different from what you might ordinarily read. It tells the tales of men who served our country in the Navy, from none other than the very people who lived them. It gives a more personal look at the accademy, and paints a warm picture of what happens "behind the scenes" at the accademy.

I would certainly recomend this book of memories to any other retierd officers or alumni. I can assure you that it will bring a smile to your face, and bring you back to those golden days of Annapolis.

Spiritual and humorous art
Paul Palnik is a unique artist, whose work is both spiritual and comic. He has a genius for capturing the small absurdities of life and casting them in a new light with his illustrations. This book shines with his humor, and I strongly recommend it.

Oy ! Did I laugh !
This book gives the non-Jewish reader a rare, humorous, glimpse into the old world of European Jewry. Non stop good humor with charming illustrations. Light hearted yet making a clear statement about the sensibility of the modern approach to religion. If you love language, you will be highly entertained deciphering the Yiddish terminology..It was a machia to read!

Shmendricks Galore
A delightful romp filled with happy spiritual mayhem. A smorgasboard of shnooks, shlubs, shmendricks and shlamazels. Souls that fly to God with borsht in there beards. The Chutzper Rebbe is a holy man for all ages and stories, transcendent humor, a whacky delight.

Warning; The Chutzper Rebbe does not like those who take themselves too seriously or the piously arrogant.

I recomend this book to those who desire a soul deep laugh and a bagel with a small pickle and some seltzer.

How to be at peace while awash in information age technology
The author has unusual credentials. A Ph.D., he teaches Technology Assessment at the University of Alaska in Juneau, and directs the University's Educational Technology Program. He is an original thinker with fresh views on how to be at peace while awash in Information Age: technology." He provides a thinking process that helps make it serve you rather than rule you. The impression one gets from the media often leaves a disturbing, hopeless feeling of being controlled by a technology. "Technology" though, is just a new way of labeling something that's been around forever; its called "change." Remember the old rag about change: "If you don't bend, you break." We must be in control and not allow technology to break us. Ohler has figured out many of the questions we need to ask about technology. He has put them down in a way you can understand and use, but he doesn't presume to know all the answers. This book deals with the grassroots problems of change. Uncertainty, unpredictability, uncontrollability. A sampling of the questions we must ask to maintain control of a technology. Three basics: (1) what is unique about it? (2) what is the real ultimate goal (any manipulation)? (3) how does it impact environment, the individual, institutions? Is it a tool or a machine? Tools are controlled by the user; machines force us to adapt ourselves to them which is a loss of control. Is the technology an information machine, or a work-producing machine? Ohler points out that tools and machines extend our senses, physical capabilities, our intelligence, and emotional experiences. In the wrong hands, they can be dangerous; properly used, they can improe our lives. Example: A microwave oven reduces the time spent cooking, increases the amount of time to do something else, but reduces family participation and interaction. Why it's important to ask questions about a technology. If you think about it, advertisers and lawyers don't particularly seek truth. They earn their keep trying to get others to adopt a particular point of view, using the tools of truth, as do their intentions, but we need to be aware of "presentation," versus "content." This is scary because of the persuasive power of information technology. Instead of "convince me" the operative words should be "inform me." This is a book with an important message for our times. We can expect that the pace of change will only increase and it's up to us to understand whether the changes are for the better or may destroy us. Ohler has set out a roadmap to enable us to evaluate the opportunities of anew technologies. Not an easy read, but this little book (141 pages) deserves a place on any thinking person's bookshelf.

Who Would Have Thought It
I've known and learned from Jason for years and I appreciate him taking all of his brilliantly simple, yet practical suggestions and advice, and accumulating them into one good read. If you aren't fortunate enough to drink coffee with Jason and pick at all the wealth in his brain, this book is an excellent substitute. END

Seeing for the first time...and evaluating
I have just finished Jason Ohler's book, Taming the Beast Choice and Control in the Electronic Jungle. It captured my interest immediately;I read it in three sittings. I found this book compelling. I am not a computer savvy techno. I work in the field of mental health. Personally, I have been wandering somewhat unconsciously through issues of relationship, community, culture, and technology and with Ohler's book it was as if I had been handed a map of the terrain. Ohler takes issues and ideas we "know" and presents them anew. Jason Ohler does what Robert Pirsig, author of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintence, refers to in commenting on James P. Carse's book, Finite and Infinite Games, that is, "add new patterns to existing facts...things you've known for years suddenly stand up in a whole new dimension." Upon reading Jason Ohler's book I have contemplated my microwave oven for the first time. Through my use of the questions that Ohler proposes for a Science and Technology Agent, a fictitious FDA adptation, I recognize a greater sense of the trade offs, the choices, the impacts inherent in living with technology. My sense of being overwhelmed by the technology of the postmodern world has lifted some, as I apply the aspects of technological literacy Ohler puts forth. In the midst of all the proclamations of "good" and "bad" technology and what it will reap for us, it is important to become what Ohler refers to as, fourth stage literate. Fourth stage literacy is being skilled at seeing and evaluating. It is then that we realize our choice and control. I am reading this book again and proposing it be added to the cirriculum of high schools and university education departments.

Biblically parenting finally explained!
This book answered so many questions for me. Having read "Shepherding a Child's Heart", I understood the concept of how to parent biblically by looking at heart issues instead of behavior and using scripture to do so, but I didn't know what scriptures to use or exactly how to implement this plan. "Teach Them Diligently" gives the detailed explanation, along with categorized scriptures of how to convict, rebuke, teach, and train your children with God's Word. A must-have for any parent who desires to bring up children to be spiritually equipped to handle life. It makes your life a whole lot easier. My 4 year-old son already has four such scriptures hidden in his heart only two weeks after my husband and I implemented these parenting principles. Thanks Lou!

Required Reading for Christian Parents
Priolo is AMAZING - he does what no other author I know has been able to do....Take the Bible and make it real in a way that transcends the bounds of its paper medium. I started by reading the Heart of Anger and then bought The Complete Husband (Both excellent books). Teaching them Diligently is THE how to guide for biblical parenting. It is cover to cover practical step by step advice on how to use scripture to raise your children the way God meant for them to be raised. The topical appendix in the back is simply priceless. This book has helped me with scripture memorization because it has encouraged and empowered me to access and apply scripture like never before. If you are a Christian Parent - or simply a parent who cares about raising children with character and integrity - your next click should be "add to cart"!!! ENJOY!

Practical and Biblical!
It has been the desire of my husband and I to raise our three children in a truly God-centered home. We knew that meant more than daily devotions and bedtime prayers, but were not sure how to incorporate the Bible into every day living. The principles in "Teach Them Diligently" changed our parenting and our own lives as well! God has clearly set forth in the Bible a process for change. We want our children to trust in Christ for their salvation and grow to be like Him. I found this book to be practical, logical, and most of all Biblical!

Awesome
I was at first reluctant to write a review about this book, it is wiser not to let your opposition know what you know, and easier to pretend that the performance of your team is the product of your own coaching greatness. However, to say nothing about this book does the author a great injustice, I have not read any other author who has dared to put so much information in a book about youth baseball as he has. After two seasons of implementing his techniques I can honestly say it works.

After a dismal first season as coach I was hell bent on improving my own performance as a coach. I read many books on coaching kids baseball before this book found me, it's funny how sometimes the cheapest and most unattractive book turns out to be the one you most cherish.
How many coaching books, for example, teach you great batting basics, and I am not talking about the old "see the ball hit the ball" coaching mantra. This book is full of proper baseball techniques, like how to grip the bat, how to swing the bat, where the hands should be at the start, where the hands should be at the end. This book covers all the basics of the game. It provides you with the tools to create a very solid base from which you can easily build a strong and effective team (or player). More than anything else this is where our team improved the most. From a team full of nothing, to kids who believed in their ability, simply because they knew how to do the little things correctly. The book has great chapters on fielding, base running, and throwing. It also covers the battery, a topic conveniently omitted by other books. The book is full of great verbal anchors and is written in an energetic style.
My advice, read the book, apply the proper techniques, then work on your teams own style and let the kids express their own individual talents. 'nough said.

Just what I needed
My wife bought this book several years ago at a homeschooling convention. My sons have not had an interest in baseball until recently. I blew the dust off the book, read it cover to cover, then "coached" two of my sons, ages 9 and 12. With just a few practices, they have gone from knowing zippo to looking like they have played for years. I refer to the book frequently for techniques and drills.

I am giving copies of it as a gift to the coaches of their baseball league.

A Must Read for New Coaches and Old
I bought "Bean's About Baseball" because I had heard it mentioned on an infosports.net discussion board.

I have coached highschool, Little League, and adult baseball so I beleive that I know something about the game but I also know there is always something to learn. I read the book hoping to learn something I did not know and with the thought that I would get another coach's perspective on the game.

If one reads this book, it must be done the first time from cover to cover. If you "skim" the book, you may very well come away thinking it is terse and sexist. However, early on the author explains why the book was written in this way and those aspects drft into the background.

The book is full of tips and drills while it helps identify and explain common mistakes made by young players. From my perspective in having some knowledge of the game, the book was a great review. I even took away some new thoughts and ideas for my practices and certain players. That is the wonderful thing about this game, like Earl Weaver used to say: "It's what you learn after you know it all that really counts".

Bean's About Baseball covers only the basics. Basics that managers and players have to go back and reveiw through their entire "careers". If you are expereinced, the book will be valuable as a review and you may learn a little something new. Another coach's perspective can often be valuable.

If you are a new coach, this book is an excellent starting point. Take an evening to read the book (about 120 pages) and go back to it as you need it. After you read it, you will know the basics of hitting, pitching, and fielding. When you know the "how to" basics, you have to convey that to your players and this book helps there also. Good coaches know the game and can teach it. This book will get you closer to being a good coach.

I have given my copy to one of the first year managers in my league that sought me out to ask about practices and drills for young players. I do not expect to see that copy again. Like many books on youth baseball, readers of this book will need to make value judgements on certain aspects as they relate to the local league rules and philosophies.

I will be recomending to our local board of directors that this book be given to each manager as part of their packet for next spring. I will further recommend that a companion sheet accompany the book to elimnate conflicts between it and our local rules and philosophies.

Like many lagues, ours has many well meaning coaching volunteers that do not really know youth baseball and how to teach it to kids. If my proposal is adopted, "Bean's About Baseball" will be a primer to next year's coaching clinic.

I would strongly recommend it for new coaches and old.

Just my thoughts, Splitter
