If you've never been to the sites listed in Adventure Kayaking, Jenner gives the info a kayaker wants to know to make an informed selection: Clear accurate directions to the put-in sites . Comments on winds, tides. Suggested paddle routes. Maps. Notes on the presence or absence of power-boats and picnickers. Where to camp. What a joy to read a guide book, go to a place and experience no major surprises!

Jeneid's writes beautifully of natural features and wildlife encountered. Clearly he has a love for birding. If you are a kayaker and a birder, then I highly recommend this book before you plan your next outing.

I checked this book out at the local library and thought it was so valuable that I bought my own copy. My only complaint is that I wish the book could of been bigger so more trips could be included. I had already done some of the trips in the book and I found the book to give not only a fair representation of the area, but I learned a few new things.

Draven's Defiance. The story of a young man named Scott who found himself in the world you probably already know a little about, since you're looking up this book: Marus.

Confused and bewildered, he joins company with Draven, an individual who bears the mark of one chosen by the Unseen One as His servant: eyes of two different colors.

Scott eventually learns from Draven that, by the power of the Unseen One, judgment has been handed out on Marus in the form of time standing still. It is Perpetually Autumn, grass does not grow, people do not age. It is judgment against the apostate leader, Mobeck, and his wicked queen Skalaw. Scott finds himself headed, along with Draven, for a showdown with the corrupt leaders to vie for the hearts of the peoples of Marus. Will Scott join with Draven's Defiance?

Another very enjoyable tale about the fictional world of Marus, weaved by Adventures in Odyssey's Paul McCusker. It tells the Biblical story of Elijah in a refreshing way, a new environment that makes the story come to life anew. There's a few new spins on this story (Draven escapes with Scott on a motorcycle, and the judgment handed out is different from the God's No-Rain judgment in the Bible. A famine, however is a consequence of time standing still)

Another great read by the same great author, and I consider it worth the money. My only regret is that there are only six in this series.

This is a great retelling of the story of elijah and Elisha. Icant wait to read the next one.

I absolutely love Paul McCusker's Passages books. I've been a fan of the Adventures in Odyssey program for years, and this book can function with or without prior Odyssey experience.

Young James finds himself in another world, and soon rescuing a young boy from his brothers. No sooner does he rescue him than the brothers return, and sell them both as slaves! James and Glennal soon discover they've been given a unique ability...together they can have visions of future events, by the power of the Unseen One. (God) They attempt to use their gift to help, but soon much more than their freedom depends on them!!

Like I've said before, the Passages series grabs the brain lobe that loves the fantasy adventures of journeys to other worlds much like Narnia, or Middle-Earth. Lots of fun, and lots of learning too.

For the parents: Glennal and James encounter rough treatment in slavery, and one man dies a violent death in a labor camp. Another is implied executed (with a graphic vision about it beforehand)

Paul McCusker writes the i've ever read.I loved this book about a different world full of unexpected twists and tunrns that will leave you dazzled,dazed,and writing emails to Paul McCusker and asking him to write more books of the same.

There was a point at which some critics contended that "Prometheus Bound" was not actually written by Aeschylus, arguing that someone else, perhaps his son Euphorion, who was also a dramatist, was the actual author. The argument hinged on the portrait of Zeus in the play, which is highly critical of the king of the Gods and at odds with the wise and just Zeus Aeschylus presents in the "Orestia." Since we have only a half-dozen complete plays of the ninety Aeschylus is believed to have written, it is difficult to make a judgment regarding his entire body of work. However, we do have fragments from the other plays in the trilogy, "Prometheus Unbound" and "Prometheus the Fire-Carrier," which suggest that what happens in this first play sets the stage for an evolving Zeus, who eventually finds his better nature when he achieves a reconciliation with the rebel Titan. Given the dramatic scope of the "Orestia," with its evolving notion of justice, it seems to me reasonable enough that Aeschylus was attempting something similar with this trilogy.

"Prometheus Bound" finds the titan, who defied Zeus and gave humanity the saving gift of fire (among other sins), bound on a remote mountain peak with iron spikes driven through his flesh by the unwilling Hephaestus and his assistants Might and Violence, allegorical figures who define the source of Zeus's power. The scenes of the play consist of a series of dialogues between Prometheus and the ancient god Oceanus (the chorus consists of the daughters of Oceanus), Io, a woman turned into a cow because of Zeus's attentions, and Hermes, who wants to know the secret held by Prometheus that threatens the power of Zeus. Prometheus (whose name means "foresight") refuses and is then cast into the underworld to be punished further. At the heart of the play is the conflict between the immovable will of Prometheus and the irresistible force of the power of Zeus.

Clearly this tragedy speaks to an archetypal human condition, wherein physical power seeks to break the mind of an individual to its will. The audience is caught in a dilemma, for on one side is the king of the gods and on the other is the savior of humanity, for without the gift of fire early man was doomed. Indeed, that was clearly the intent of Zeus. Consequently, like Prometheus, the audience is caught between their own rock and a hard place. Fortunately, by the end of the trilogy Aeschylus gives his audience an out, for the Zeus who is represented in this play is transformed into a more acceptable deity in the end. Even without those plays and knowing the innovative brilliance of Aeschylus as a tragic dramatist, we can certainly appreciate the overall story arc that begins with this play. For teachers who do not want to contend with the entire "Orestia" or have to contend with editing it down for students, "Prometheus Bound" represents a single work by Aeschylus that is equally as pivotal to our understanding of classical mythology.

The Titan Prometheus has stolen fire from heaven and given it to Earth's mortal inhabitants. He is punished for his presumption by being bound to a rock on Mount Caucasus and tortured. Prometheus, who can foretell the future, refuses to tell Zeus the secret of Zeus' downfall. This is a play of the conflict between force and injustice on one side and intelligence, justice, and altruism on the other. The play greatly influenced a wide spectrum of later writers. It should be required reading in all universities.

Can we trust our courts to apply the law to the facts in controversial cases involving race and to rule on the law, putting persnal feelings and political agendas aside? Mr. Walkowski says such innocent trust is misplaced, and in this, his latest book on how our courts work, tells a tale of deceit, manipulation, congressional betrayal and corruption of judicial intellect on a scale that is unimaginable to the average American. Yet it is all true. Walkowski shows how the meaning of words had to be changed to make a case of discrimination where none existed. In clear, concise and devastating detail, the reader is given a glimpse how, in pursuit of diversity, the United States Supreme Court suspended the Fourteenth Amendment guarantee of equal protection under law in order to go about the business of racially balancing America's workforce. The price americans have paid for this judicial social engineering, Walkowski, says, has had the opposite effect of what was intended. Race relations have soured, not improved. Worse, blacks and Hispanics have been led to believe that preferential programs aimed at them are remedial, and that opposition to those efforts is fueled by bigotry. Affirmative Action/Affirmative Discrimination is not going to sit well with those who support managed diversity.

Paul Walkowski has done it again. This time, in another outstanding book on how the federal courts fabricated discriination in employment cases back in the early 70's, and how those findings affect us today. I read his earlier work on the courts, "From Trial Court to the United States Supreme Court", and believe that Walkowski is the most precise critic of our courts in years. Walkowski, in 147-pages, gives us a clear, concise and devastating look at how the federal courts fabricated a case of racial discrimination in the Boston police and fire departments, and how the liberal Burger Supreme Court remained silent while the lower courts went about restructuring society to obtain judicial diversity. This book is an excellent account of the dangers of managed racial diversity, and should be required reading in political science and law classes. More than that, every American who is concerned about the way our courts became tools of the progressives in congress, and how those branches betrayed the promise of the Fourteenth Amendment, will find this fast reading book a primer on the corruption of thought that has swept our nation on this very important issue. I strongly recommend this book.

Pushkin is to Russian speakers what Shakespeare is to English speakers. His influence on the prose and poetry of the language is second to no one and writing influences Russian literature to this day. Amazingly Pushkin only lived until the age of 38. Even now you can visit his gravesite (as I did) and still see teenage girls weeping and putting flowers on his grave.

This edition of the complete prose of Pushkin is truly excellent. The Queen of Spades and the Captain's Daughter are included are and are worth the price alone.

The translators, Arndt and Debreczeny, do a fine job in translating Pushkin's prose, while the stories are set up in chronological order so the reader can see Pushkin's growth as a prose writer. In fact this was the volume of Pushkin writings in English I took with me while living in Russia for a short while.

Very readable and a worthwhile introduction to the greatest of Russian writers.

What makes this book so beautiful is that word "Complete". In one handy reference you can enjoy all of Pushkin's prose. Mr. Debreczeny's translation of Pushkin's work is hearty. I believe it's nearly as close as we can come to feeling the work outside of really knowing Russian.

That would be amazing for me: to know Russian and read Pushkin in the language that he raised high in the face of the patrician encroachment of French that had relegated Russian to servant status. Each language must have a unique and valuable propriety in it's innermost meanings, and in reading this work (plus knowing something of Russian culture), I believe you can feel that unique Russian "thing" even through this translation.

You have about fifteen pieces plus Pushkin's own pre-work/research and some fragments. Mr. Debreczeny has arranged them such that you walk through the development of Pushkin as a prose writer. Early on, he did have quite a disdain for prose in comparison to poetry. To paraphrase Debreczeny, Pushkin's first serious writing treated prose as a necessary evil, writing with technical correctness but approaching parody of itself with strict adherence to the concept of prose as a sterile, low medium for expression.

I the later works, you will see the layering of complex themes and characters into prose that for me felt like driving a standard shift with power-assisted steering -- You get just enough resistance to feel the road and keep you engaged and thinking. Also, you just plain enjoy the ride.

Mr. Debreczeny is an excellent guide in his commentary and in his translation.

This book is a spectacular visual text to some of the American National Parks. The size of the photos, and their photographic quality, are just excellent. The photos are right up there with National Geographic-type quality. In addition, the accompaning text gives ecological insights to where and why this part of the United States was designated and saved as a National Park. The book gives short but insightful accompanying text for each of the Parks that are presented to the reader. The only problem is, unfortunately, the organization of the chapters, and a very skimpy table of contents, and the reader can get easily annoyed with these two problems. It is hard to understand why the publisher made such errors, as the problems are very obvious, and the whole book suffers as a result. It is a beautiful book covering many of the National Parks, with super photos and very good college level text, and if you can put up with the problems of a missing table of contents, this book is a great collection of art, ecology, and the National Parks of the USA. A 5-star for the photos and accompanying text, and a 3 for a useless table of contents. Sorry, but the publisher made major mistakes in putting this otherwise spectacular book together. But I will still give the book a 5-star anyway. The photos and text are just too good to give this book anything less than a 5-star.

This book contains some of the most amazing photographs I've ever seen of America. From pictures of dripstone formations adorning New Mexico's Carlsbad Cavern in New Mexico to Lush Ecosystems shrouded in Fog in the National Park in Washington, these pictures help to vividly describe each park. I remember once having an argument with someone over the fact that there were rainforests near where I lived in Washington and no one would believe me. Well, here is proof!

I was also especially interested in looking up the Painted Desert we visited once on a trip across America after college. At the time, I didn't actually realize I was in the Petrified Forest national Park in Arizona because technically, we were just driving right through and I wasn't paying attention.

This book has helped to bring a new awareness to my own life and also encourages a desire for more exploration. Now I definitely want to see Mount McKinley in person.

Voyageurs National Park looks like a fascinating place to paddle around lonely islands. However, they do say never to skimp on insect repellent. A third of the park is water.
